If this is true, this sucks tremendously. Guess, people are going to have to get the international version.
Our man Chris Davies wrote earlier this week that the carriers might kill the Galaxy Tab 7.7 thanks to the fact that the tablet has voice calling capability. Davies reckons that the carriers in the US won’t appreciate that voice calling feature because it might make some users cancel that smartphone plan rather than having both smartphone and tablet plans. I would be willing to bet that Samsung shopped the Tab 7.7 and the Note around to carriers in the US and found no takers.

Sucks that no US carrier decided to pick it up. Guess, its the GT7 BS all over again in that they don't want their customers to use voice/data on the same plan.

While this does discourage carries they might just do the same thing they did with the original galaxy tab and just lock it out......
Its still not announced officially.

Well, this was an international event, and they didn't announce availability in any country yet, so I don't think they're ready to announce availability. I don't think that Samsung is dumb enough to pass on one of its biggest markets for this, and I think this was just a misunderstanding.
Also, the guy in this video seems to have been told that the "IR" port on the side is for the "American" model of the Galaxy Tab 7.7, and that the models on display were Wi-Fi only, so hopefully the Wi-Fi model will launch alongside the 3G model, unlike the original 7 inch Galaxy Tab...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejG-wM2dS_k
Also for what it's worth, these PR guys really don't know what they're talking about most of the time, the girl in this video even said that the camera was 5mp, when it's actually 3mp.
They did this for all the previous devices. That just means they don't have a plan in place for US yet. It doesn't mean they won't release in US.

Actually injunctions granted from Germany impacts the rest of the EU doesn't it?
Also the reason why germany is chosen over other EU countries is the fact that Germany will grant preliminary injunction based on Community design and community design grants do not have a review process before being granted

The preliminary injunction doesnt effect other countries in EU at the moment. At first it did, but some days after it was issued the court sayd they are not sure if they can ban it in all EU countries.
I'm not sure if the final decision will effect the EU or only Germany.
Who holds the patents on OLED technology and which manufacturers are licensed to produce them? If amoled is not a samsung exclusive, would you switch products?
(Yes toshiba has a 7.7 SAMOLED+ tablet, has anybody switched?)
Reading this now:

I'm looking for the root of this technology IP tree.
Enjoy!
Good God, these poor mac guys are WHACK! We're totally civil --like a bunch of old church ladies on quilting night--- compared to these guys.
Any ideas on how this plays out?
Okay. Maybe I can help.... then again maybe I can't. Anyway, techonogy development these days is a lot less like starting with an idea and building on it; and a lot more like taking existing ideas and building on them. In Samsung's case, they are NOT the pioneering entity behind OLED technology. If they were the poineering entity behind OLED technology, they would be the sole patent holders of everything OLED. If they were the sole patent holders of everything OLED, then competing manufacturers(especially competing manufacturers using a competing platform) wouldn't stand a chance in hell of licensing this technology for use in their own products. However, as Samsung cannot lay sole claim to everything OLED, LG & Nokia are able to license this tech and develop competing display technologies using it; hense LG OLED & Nokia ClearBLACK AMOLED.
However, just because Samsung didn't invent OLED technology, it doesn't mean that they didn't perfect it. On top of being one of the only companies physically capable of producing OLED panels, they can do it well and inexpensively. Furthermore, they have demonstrated an uncanny ability to squeeze an ungodly number of pixels into a very small space.
So, conclude what you will, but I didn't buy a Galaxy Note (GT-N7000), a Galaxy Tab 7.7 (GT-P6810), and a Galaxy S III (GT-I9300) for nothing.

Awesome. Yes... it's incredible. So sAMOLED+ if samsung's, then how are toshiba and motorola able to produce the Thrive and the Razr? Licensing from samsung? Or licensing from Universal Display?
Toshiba most likely buys the panels from Samsung similar to how Meizu bought the Exynos 4412 for their quadcore phone. Although Samsung is pretty well rounded and have expanded since, they are first and foremost a manufacturer. Meaning, they make most of their dough selling ram, displays, and CPU chip solutions to people like Apple and Toshiba. Don't quote me on it but I am pretty sure the Toshiba 7.7 screen is the exact same one in the Tab 7.7.
Sony makes their own OLED technology but they prefer to use white LEDs in theirs. LG I have no idea what they do.
loved the forum thread, makes me want to eat buttered pop corn while reading. PED vs TZMN lol
at least, it's samsung's strive for innovation, in a way that they did the AM to the OLED.

Ha i wouldn't give them high praise because some of their points are right but some are totally, completely wrong. They seem to be arguing for the sake of arguing, trying to force others to knee in vain. You are right, it's like church ladies on quilting night. XD
For example, they are oversimplifying patents, IP, trademarks and copyrights related stuffs and sometime confused with them altogether. Ped said AMOLED is just a brand name which is obviously wrong, though he made many valid points, but not enough to satisfy all questions raised.
In fact, there isn't unversially single patent for everything in OLED, and UD doesn't own them all, because unfortunately many of them were invalidated by other OLED manufacturers some time ago. So i would be worrying the large sum of UD stocks ped is stilling holding.
To OP: Samsung might not own all the patents in SAMOLED+ but those who buys SAMOLED+ panels might only care about the cost and the indeminty clauses (indeminty against future patents/licenses disputes) come with the procurement. As long as Samsung sells cheaper SAMOLED+ panel with all the indeminty, other manufacturers are happy.
Tarz was actually starting the thread with the assertion that Samsung and Apple suing each other because they want to increase their bargaining power over IP disputes. He is partially right as the whole thing began with Apple tried to use the court to deferring some of the Samsung's products entering certain markets, while Samsung retributes in hope to force Apple settles.
In my personal opinions Apple is playing very cheap in this, as they are not seeking damages compensation, but rather attempting to defer competitors' launching of new products on time, which would eventually hurt the customers in these regions under injunction order. Customers in the other regions suffer too, because the price would be inevitably raised. Thats all lost one win situation regardless of the legal outcome, where Apple is the only winner because they have huge amount of money on disposal.
Of course, i wouldn't say that in a forum surrounded by mac fans. XD

so do you think apple was partially to blame for the 7.7's flop?

Apple has finally realized that Android is unstoppable and closing the gap in the market, they are going against Samsung because they are the only company that is coming out with top of the line devices, both phones and tablets. There is rumors of Apple coming out with a 7" tab, why because 7" tabs are the way to go and Samsung are leading the pack.

I agree price was an issue but also what hurt them is US carriers not allowing a device with both 3g+wifi. Verizon came out with 7.7" but I am sure it has not sold as many as they would have hoped because it is only a wifi model and expensive even with a contract. It was a stretch for to for $600+ for he P6800 but I am happy with my purchase because it has what I wanted, 3g+wifi and unlocked. Carries need to learn to adopt or have the manufacturers sell them directly to the customers and forgo carriers all together.

Be glad it was even offered in your country, I had to import mine, and opt for the wifi since the 3G was ridiculously expensive. But this is what one pays for such tech, still I doubt the manufacturing price is that high even, for the wifi version.
Personally I am a big supporter of OLED tech, first oled device was the sony X series walkman, then the S2 and now the 7.7. I await the day of an OLED laptop, but I feel that is at least 2-3 years off.

You might want to check your facts there bud. The Verizon Tab 7.7 is not only a 3G/WiFi device, but it's also an LTE device. The only thing holding the Verizon Tab 7.7 back is software and carrier subsidy bull****. As far as hardware and build quality go though, the Verizon Tab 7.7 is the best of the three. In addition to the added LTE radio, the Verizon Tab 7.7 also retained the IR emitter that was seen on early engineering samples of the Tab 7.7. I have no idea why Samsung pulled the IR emitter from the GT-P6800 and GT-P6810, but left it in the SCH-I815; but it definitely adds value to the I815.
Anyway, I personally went with the GT-P6810 because I always have a tethering-enabled handset on me and Verizon's pricing/contract for the SCH-I815 was ridiculous. So with an internet connection always in my pocket, buying a tablet with built-in 3G/4G/LTE would only make sense if it were the same price as the WiFi-only model. In my case, at the time of purchase, my GT-P6810 was (U.S.) $439. The GT-P6800 was $549 and the SCH-I815 was $500 w/2 yr. contract or $800 off-contract; a ridiculous price in my opinion. However, in the spirit of honesty and fairness, it is my understanding that the off-contract price of the SCH-I815 has been reduced to a much more reasonable $549, and now has monthly data plans available for it. Nevertheless, the SCH-I815 is definitely the most drool-worthy of the Tab 7.7's.

I had to import my P6810 too. Even though Verizon's Tab 7.7 was very appealing, it was still far less expensive to import a P6810 than to buy an I815 on or off contract. However, if the I815 had the same level of development interest as the P68*0, I probably could have justified the extra expense. That IR emitter is really useful for when you're on your Tab 7.7 in the living room; and Verizon's LTE is blazing fast. The I815 is a hell of a device.

as far as I remember, our 7.7was originally intended to compete against the iPad 2, it was like September of that year. iPad was the talk of the town but our tab. a new comer boasting the legendary SAMOLED+ screen, with the dual, 1.4ghz procee couple with the thinnest waistline during those days and packing a 5100 mah batt. it's too much for Apple and will surely hurt their iPad 2 sales. hence, the temporary injunction, delaying the launch by 3 months or so. Wherein people waiting for our 7.7 just bought its little brother. the 7.0 plus
I'm one of those who lose hope when the 7.7 was banned and just pick up a p1000 instead jut to satisfy my tablet hunger

It's really a bummer when carriers need to limit such a wonderful device to earn more. yest they can do this if you love iPad and iPhone, 2 separate entities. but for the Samsung galaxy tab 7 series with complete function, it's ridiculous. Apple is pursuing patent road blocks in the US International Trade Commission as well as federal courts. Engadget is reporting that the judge in the case before the International Trade Commission is recommending an import ban on Samsung phones and tablets, which will require work around to remedy patent infringements. The next big market with brewing patent issues for Samsung is the EU. 2013 is definitely looking like a year of escalated patent wars, which is not good news foe consumer.http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/29/itc-document-recommends-samsung-post-88-percent-value-bond/

It's rarely that simple. There are big business deals and contractual obligations in play.
Not to mention the money Samsung makes from selling to Apple.
And if it weren't for potential income from future litigation, Apple's market share value might well drop even further. Possibly into realistic ranges! Other than making smaller versions of established products and the "retina display".....not much else truly innovative has come from Cupertino. IMHO.

The good news for Samsung is that Apple's suffered several recent setbacks on key patents--the US Patent OFfice has invalidated their pinch-to-zoom and rubberband patents and a jury in Delaware held that 3 other Apple patents violate prior patents held by a consortium that includes Nokia. Apple clearly will appeal these decisions, but the fact that some patents at issue in both litigation and administrative action is beneficial for Samsung. Samsung is also trying to improve its political influence by expanding its manufacturing facility in Texas. I do believe that the Wall Street Journal is right about patent wars heating up even more in 2013. Samsung' s next big patent skirmish will be with EU regulators who began regulatory proceedings against them for refusing to license patented technology at favorable terms to EU companies.

This has nothing to do with current devices such as the Galaxy Note 10.1, the Note 2 or the Galaxy SIII. Only devices around 2 years old. See the posts from BarryH and myself two days ago in a different thread :

The bans are for devices that are a generation old and the SGS3, N2, and Note 10.1 weren't even considered. And the ITC has said s/w work-arounds are an acceptable alternative to prevent them from being banned. All of the featutres in the Note 10.1 are also included in the N2 (and then some). None of these phones afaik have been sold in the USA for maybe two years! Apple has been trying to tag on a catch-all listing nearly every device that Samsung makes - probably including Air Conditioners and Refigerators! None of these additional devices are covered.
Even these extremely limited recommendations, from a single Judge, also must be first approved by the six-member ITC Commission and then go to presidential approval.
In the meantime one of the four Apple patents covered by the ruling has already been invalidated by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and they are re-examining several other Apple patents.
And you think that this will affect anything for years and years - if ever!

I came upon this article about samsung's profit estimates for Q3 and one part caught my eye (it would be fantastic if it was true)
http://www.businessweek.com/news/20...beats-estimates-on-cheaper-galaxy-smartphones
Galaxy Gear
Samsung may have sold 3 million of its Note 3 devices since the Sept. 25 release. The device, with a 5.7-inch screen, is a combination phone and tablet computer that touts improved software and performance compared with the previous model.
“The mobile rivalry will only intensify in the fourth quarter from the third, when Samsung had no strong competitor to fight against,” Byun said. “Depending on how well the Note 3 device will sell, that would determine not only its smartphone but its chip earnings in the fourth quarter as well.”
On the same day, the South Korean company also started selling the Galaxy Gear, a wristwatch device that can make phone calls, check e-mails and take photos. The smartwatch, priced at $299, competes with a similar device from Sony Corp. as electronics makers race to carve a share of the market for wearable technology.
That is not bad considering its a different target market and they didn't launch in as many countries on the 25th as say another company.
