Hi,
I'm going to send my Streak for repair and I wanted to ask what files are usually stored in the internal sd? Are there any personal/sensistive datas, photos, thumbnails...or anything related to the owner's privacy/security datas in there?
Thanks!
The innerSD contains the /data and /cache partitions, whatever's on there is whatever's on there.
If you're paranoid make a nandroid dump and fac reset it then restore it afterwards.
Sending back to Dell means he needs to flash stock recovery and stock rom (if on custom) as well.
- flash streakmod if not already flashed.
- do full nandroid.
- flash stock recovery of your ROM.
- do factory reset from Dell recovery menu.

I have flashed many a Rom in my day, but the Nexus 7 is a unique beast. How do you flash a ROM and how do you go about erasing the internal storage without losing all the data on the device. I.e. what you are flashing the TWP back ups and the Titanium back ups.
IF THIS HAD BEEN POSTED BEFORE I AM SORRY I AM ON MY NEXUS I DON'T HAVE A WAY TO SEE OLD POSTS.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Unlock the bootloader. (THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING - PERFORMS A FACTORY RESET).
(So perform a backup first using either adb pull or Carbon (available on PlayStore)).
Fastboot flash a custom recovery, (CWM or TWRP).
Reboot into that recovery...
Flash the ROM of your choice.

No no I already did that. Like on my S3 I need to wipe cache/delvik factory reset. Doing the factory reset erases the internal storage, since that is where the ROM is being flashed from and where the twp back ups are those could get erased. Which can brick a device. So what do I do to flash a ROM cleanly. Every time I flash a ROM it bootloops.

factory reset on the nexus devices, DO NOT WIPE /data/media which is where your 'sdcard' data is.....

I'm a little vague about what you're asking here...
Haven't used CWM for a while (I forget the details), but in TWRP, having pressed WIPE...
...you can then select (In the wipe menu) CACHE, DALVIK CACHE, FACTORY RESET all with relative impunity... even SYSTEM ('Wipe System? This will wipe your ROM') can be wiped, if you have NANDROID BACKUPS or flashable ROMs to fall back on in internal storage.
The options to wipe EXTERNAL STORAGE, INTERNAL STORAGE and FORMAT DATA, however should be treated with EXTREME CAUTION... as you may be left only with a custom recovery (if you have wiped SYSTEM beforehand)... and then you'll have either have to adb push a NANDROID (or flashable ROM) from your computer or fastboot flash back to stock.
(As an aside by the way, you aren't really 'bricked'... you just have no usable ROM on your system; but that really isn't a problem if you know how to use adb or fastboot).
------
FACTORY RESET in TWRP doesn't wipe the internal storage... if that is what you're alluding to...

That is exactly what I was wonder thank you for both your answers
Hi all,
I have a nexus 7 running Android 4.1.2 stock w/ root. Some months ago, I disabled the OTA update notification - but I can't seem to remember how!
I want to now re-enable OTA updates so that I can update to the latest android version, and not lose my installed apps.
I've searched the device for FOTAKill.apk inside /system/app, and its not found
I've also searched for frozen / hidden apps using Titanium Backup Pro... nothing
When I enter Settings -> About Tablet -> System Updates... it says I'm up to date... but I'm not, considering I'm running 4.1.2.
Any help or pointers in re-enabling OTA is appreciated!!
- make a full nandroid backup.
- using fastboot, flash the system.img file from the 4.2.2 factory image to the system partition.
- using your custom recovery, reflash a SuperSU root kit bundle.
- using the custom recovery, wipe cache and dalvik-cache.
If you don't like the result, restore the nandroid backup and proceed in a different fashion. It will probably break things like stickmount and any other changes that you caused in /system.
Note the above method is for use by lazy and sloppy users. A better approach is to make TiBu backups of only your market apps, bite the bullet, and start from scratch with a flash & (new) configuration of a pure stock ROM. In any case, every conceivable procedure should start with making a full nandroid backup and getting it copied to a safe place off the tablet.
I will also say that unless odd problems crop up, the portions of the factory install procedure (using fastboot) that deal with erasure or flashing of the userdata partition should be skipped, as these steps completely wipe your /data storage - including your /sdcard area in /data/media/0 and any CWM/TWRP nandroid backups!
It's not really clear why these steps would be needed unless the /data ext4 filesystem in the userdata partition got corrupted somehow. A more sly approach would be to use the custom recovery's "factory reset" procedure to clean up /data - either before or after flashing the factory ROM - and completely skip anything that touches the userdata partition in the factory install instructions.
good luck
Hey Guys,
After doing some reading about Folder & partition structure of Android, I am totally confused & in worse condition.
My question is simple;
Flashing a new ROM does not reset/delete the folder in the internal SD card. Since I have capacity problem, I would like to delete those folders and make fresh start. How can I do this? Is is safe to delete /android/data folder?
Under setting/storage, the sum of all folders is around 5.2 GB, while it shows the total as 8.8 GB. Where is the rest of my space?
Best Regards
I have a GT-I9500, running Arrow ROM 11.0 (android 4.3)
Philz recovery has an option to format the device internal memory.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
9505 has 9.13gb
in recovery before flashing a rom you have to wipe data, system, cache, dalvkit cache, etc
i wist phyl recovery sayd wike internal memory, but there is no option like that, only wipe sdcard1 (external)
Okay this is what you need to do.
First download official firmware through SamMobile, then flash the .tar file through Odin, the boot into recovery, factory reset, the flash the same .tar file again. This will wipe out ALL your data on internal storage and give you a true fresh start. Of course after that if you're not happy you can always flash a custom recovery and flash a ROM.
Thanks for the replies. Going back to original firmware, seems like a tough route.
When I connect my device to windows, it simply allows me to format the SD card. What would happen IF I just do that? Would I brick the phone or loose an irrecoverable important data? (I don't care, If some bloatware does not work or loose its data)

I'm pretty sure if you format the internal card from a Terminal prompt, you will brick your phone.
we already told you you have to WIPE though recovery

No. wiping through philz does not erase your efs directory.
However, you can always backup your efs to be totally safe
I have searched online, and there is no definative reliable content on what portions of memory I can delete safely without loosing the nandroid backup. What I mean is, I have TWRP on my handset. Aside from the factory reset option, what else can I wipe? I am asking because I built a Cyanogenmod unofficial image, and flashed my handset with it. The phone booted ok; I got an error about NFC service stopping. So I restored the phone back to a previous nandroid image. I then, tried to install my image again. This time the phone goes into download mode. I think I saw something online about how doing advanced clean would fix this. So when I log into TWRP I have the following options:
Davlic Cache, System, Data, Internal Storage, Cache, and Micro SDcard. How can I know where my nandroid backups reside so I can avoid clearing that portion?

By default nandroid backup is on internal storage but you can choose to save it on sd card as well. Tap on the top box/menu after you enter restore menu. If you choose sd card and twrp shows no backup then the backup is on internal storage. Explore a bit mate.
Or use file explorer check twrp folder in both storage. There should be subfolder of 'backup' in it.
You don't need factory reset. And just choose wipe cache/dalvik/system/data to install new rom/restore nandroid backup
After rooting my Nexus 7 wifi 2012 tablet and trying several back ups and restores I started to notice the size of memory has gone from 13gig to 6gig.
I have done a factory reset from boot up recovery mode using TWRP. I also tried other options in TWRP wipe option, clearing internal cache, many other options to mention, not sure what most did, tinkering
I have also restored to a factory image using Nexus root toolkit option flash stock + unroot (forced flash mode) and restored from a downloaded image.
I thought restoring to factory image was suppose to put everythng back as it was! where has all the memory gone! 13gig before rooting and now 6 gig :crying:
EDIT
Well, I got the size to show back correctly with the factory image restored (13.36gb). I booted to recovery and selected "wipe data/factory reset" and also did the "wipe cache partition" just to be sure.
Why none of this work when I was doing the same from TWRP recovery mode rooted? I have to root again now, bet the same thing will happen and left with lower memory and no way to fix? time............................
Usually, it's TWRP I've always had partition formatting issues with it. Use the CWM recovery meant for your device instead.

RealPariah,
Thanks for the reply.
Have it sorted now. Turns out NRK buggy. Would not put nandroid backup to destination on hard drive. Not even with a reboot. Hence memory on Nexus tablet shrinking. I should have clocked on earlier. will check out CWM.
I was thinking of keeping NRK. Just read about CWM. Would it be o.k to download CWM from Googleplay and run it or would that interfere with NRK?
I've got the same issue. This weekend I just sideloaded 5.1.1 on mine (it's a 2012 model), and I'm looking at 6Gb only now (it's a 16GB N7).
I also have TWRP on it.
I used the Wugnet Nexus Root Toolkit for everything, which also supports CWM.. but why is that the one "meant" for the device? It's a custom recovery. Or is it more closely based on the stock recovery than TWRP is?
What's NRK?
I did a wipe on the cache partition already, so that clearly didn't work. I guess I could wipe data and start all over again.
PS. Using ES File explorer, I've found a number of what appears to be actual copies of my emulated sdcard data, not just symlinks:
1) /sdcard -symlink (to /storage/emulated/0 I think?)
2) /storage/emulated/0 (not a symlink)
3) /storage/emulated/legacy (not a symlink, but data is in there too.. a copy?)
4)/storage/sdcard0 (symlink)
5) /mnt/sdcard (symlink)
6) /data/media/0 (not a symlink, another copy?) Also, weirdly, the only directory I could change permissions on if I wanted to..
I'd have thought that would have been /Storage/emulated/0 .
I think /storage/emulated/0 is the main actual repository, and I get that there are symlinks, but /storage/emulated/legacy and /data/media/0 look like full on duplications to me.
Found the answer - I've got my space back.
1) Restore stock recovery,
2) boot into it and
3) do a factory reset from there.
