I'm running beta1 of onecosmic and crew version, and I must agree : ICS on SGS is just plain great, and probably for most users usable as a daily rom, depending on your exact needs.
The look and feeel is really awesome, but many older apps feel clunky now !
Now if only Samsung could get there act together and offer to all SGS owner an official port .....

give ICS a try! running for a few days in my i9000B with minor issues only. You should have some experiencie with flashing before even consider to try

ICS is quite astonishing, however its port for SGS is still in early BETA development stage so newbies should wait for the final release as it naturally suffers from some bugs. Devs are doing a great job and hopefully ICS project on SGS will be finished quickly... maybe it's going to be a Christmas present
Yeah, it is quite awesome. I think I can't go back I use gingerbread anymore.

'The what? Who's Samsung? :S'
I tried the ICS port for about 3 days, it running pretty smooth for a BETA, but... I came back to CM7.
I don't really see any advantages of the ICS compared to GB. The menus looks a bit fancier than GB, but I can't see any other advantages. Some apps don't work because they are not optimized for ICS, like facebook sync and some other apps. It still lags more than CM7 (for now). And I really like the toggles on the status bar on CM7, I cannot have them on the ICS port.
What do you guys like so much about ICS that you can't have on CM7??

ICS is the bigest android makeover so far and to say is not that different than GB is big understatement . I've been using android since Cupcake and ICS is the bigest change so far. And I,m loving it.

I love ICS as well, but there are many features of touchwiz that I find necessary, like the toggles in the notification bar.
I've been resisting it, but all the good things I keep reading about these ICS ports, I think I might have a go!
lol thats what I am worried about, so I am going to take everyone positive comments in for now.
then when ICS is close to being perfect (like official release version) i will make the switcharoooooo.
I have tried alpha6 version but i was missing FM radio so I switched back to official rom. I am seriously missing smart dialing in ICS. Is it possible to port it to ICS??
Many thanks to devs

kinda sucks that Motorola Droid users are getting dropped.
But I imagined it was only a matter of time...
The hardware is starting to get limited.
But I wonder if a dual core phone will be the last phone I will ever buy?
It would take quite some time for the OS to exceed the power of a dual core phone.
I think there's a pretty good chance the G2 will be one of the first devices, based on this update.

Hope they got the graphical and camera driver developed better than the current ported/AOSP based ICS.
I posted this the other day in the CM7 thread in the dev forum :
Update on CM9 from Cyanogen (Steve Kondik) himself :
We've been seeing some alpha builds of CM9 for a few devices. Where are things at right now?
We’re working on adding a lot of new features ... the theme engine needs to be totally rebuilt. Overall things are going to be a lot cleaner. The CM settings will all be integrated into the stock control panel. Everything in it's place, where it should be. The hardeset thing about CM9 is that Google has changed so much internally with ICS. Issues with graphics drivers are an issue. We can’t even write a transition layer to use. We’re just waiting on Google at this point. I’ve ported CM9 to the galaxy tab 10.1, but with no hardware acceleration... well, it just sucks. A lot of things don't work. We're not going to release something at this stage of development.

I think I may try this one Monday. I had a replacement phone sent to me last week because of a display issue (turning shades of green and sometimes not waking up). The replacement they sent me is now going into a boot cycle when I try and turn on the WiFi, and it doesn't find any networks. Plus, I updated the stock Froyo to Gingerbread, and it looks like a pain somewhat to downgrade.
So maybe when I get the new one in Monday it will have stock Froyo and I can root and install the Virtuous Quattro ROM then.
Maybe you guys can answer a question since I am thinking about it now, if I do root it and everything with stock Froyo, do I just make a backup with ClockworkMod to keep the stock image?
my ics experience: virtuous quattro RC2, Andromadus Alpha 8, ICS Slim 1.2
I tried all three ICS ROMs on my G2 this weekend. Kudos to the devs -- they are all worthy projects. I am back to CM7, though while waiting for CM9 or a more stable version of the other three. Here is my feedback:
Virtuous Quattro RC2:
This is an impressive ROM, but definitely not RC -- the launcher display glitch is a showstopper if only for aesthetic reasons. I'm glad that the camera hack exists (progress!), but it's not yet usable, or at least not reliable. It often crashes, doesn't show preview until the second picture, and often corrupts part of the photo. Also, no wifi-calling which is a must have for many T-Mobile G2 users.
Andromadus Alpha 8:
This ROM is more stable than Virtuous Quattro in terms of visual glitches, but it lacks camera and wifi-calling. I missed some of the settings and features built into Quattro.
ICS Slim 1.2
This ROM performs quite nicely and is definitely slim. I missed the stock Email app, but it was easy to add back in by unzipping an ICS Gapps file. Wifi-calling is installed but not working for me. I was able to launch the app, and get the icon in the notification bar, but wasn't able to actually place or receive calls. Incoming calls were ignored, and outgoing calls would spin on dialing for about 20 seconds, and then end with a beep.

For once I am happy that Samsung is not releasing ICS! This means I get a vanilla OS from the wonderful community here!
I don't seem to be using TouchWiz for that many things! And if at there are things that I use, I am sure to find alternatives for all of those in the Market!
So I get the ICS "new look" and all the goodies with it - without the old UI!!! It's amazing!

I have disabled all the music hub, games hub, social hub and readers hub as I never used them.
along with the news and weather app and kobo and yahoo finance

ICS has a loyal following of idiots .

ICS is windows 7
GB is Windows Vista, if you understand what I mean.
BUT, ATM, there are few bugs in ICS that need polishing. It's not yet as stable as it should e.g.
-Black screen of death. Screen just goes black for no reason and the only way out is to reboot.
-Wifi at times does not switch on. It turns pale green to indicate it is initiating 'turning on' but hangs there. Solution is to reboot out wait a long while.
-WiFi direct crashes when you are connected for to long e.g. sending large files.
-Wifi direct experiences pairing problems.
But all the positive overshadow the negative. It's to much to be said. With every new ICS release comes the polishing of bugs, just as was with GB

More like XP reliable and works but not as something that ICS will eventually have .
The bugs in ICS following on from GB should not be in the build or they learnt nothing .
So far ICS has no improvement over my current GB set up and that's after trying 50 odd ICS builds .

gb seems more polished, because it had 12 months to fully develop, till it was "finished" with version 2.3.7.
the first few samsung stock roms with 2.3.3 were terribly buggy and had a horrible battery life. it took 8 months since the first release for the GB roms to get as good as they are now.
then come the noobs that think that ics will magically work from the first day on with samsung stock roms and all the customizations they put into it. and now that the hype is over, people start realizing that ics with touchwiz is not really better than GB, especially since there are still bugs but given enough time, it will eventually become better than GB.
aosp ics is way better than gingerbread, for every single reason listed in the link on the first page. there are dozens of features i use every day that i would miss if i ever went back to GB. face unlock, the search bar on each home screen (w/o taking away space for widgets or icons), new and better widgets, chrome...
but everybody is entitled to their own opinion and since everybody knows the differences or can look them up in the link on the first page, this thread is redundant and reported.
is it fast than GB?

I'm betting that AOSP ROMs should be able to be ported with just an ICS kernel, much of 4.1 is UI improvements rather than deep changes like 4.0.

4.0 and 4.1 is totally different from 2.3 to 4.0 so you're completely wrong here.
The answer is. It is possible but someone needs to do it and most developers have moved on.

we will have an official fully working ICS in a few weeks, and I think the AOSP ICS roms are good enough for daily use, so its just the right time to start working on JB!
It says here ........http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s3-jelly-bean-update-details-samsung-ram-98158/ ......that JB will be rolled out to 3 year old devices, some by July, and one of these is the Nexus S. So if the Nexus S will be capable of running JB we might even be lucky enough to see an official release for our DHD's by the end of the year maybe!!?? Atleast should get a decent port!! Looks more promising to see some Jelly Bean goodness than I first thought anyway!!

remember. ICS was released mid october, and we still dont have official yet :/
True, but ICS was a major change to Gingerbread whereas JB is supposed to be an incremental upgrade, so maybe if we do get it officially it will be a bit quicker getting to us than ICS!!?? Can always hope
LC said he is waiting for source, and then he will build a rom.
he also said JB is a small update to the source, so it wont be a problem to build a working rom. (or at least this is how I read it XD)
Our DHDs are due an official ICS rom in the coming weeks. Once this happens, surely it won't take long to get the camera fully working in ICS and JB update should merely be incremental. I'm not a dev though, so could be wrong.
