s-pen improvement - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

i have been doing quite alot of drawing on my note and i find that they could have improvement the spen much more than they have done.. i few things i find missing or just lacking
- no matter the app the pen if set for L/R handed only appears to support portrait drawing, by this i mean, i have the pen set to left handed and when i draw a line and turn the device around when in portrait the lines i draw are off set to the left of the tip of the style point by a few mm.. but as i switch my phone around to the left/upside down/right the lines are off set wrong so that u draw and the drawing is not lined with the point of the styles.. why dint they offer a half way position to solve this?

Can you draw on the left side of the screen when holding the phone on portrait mode?? Few devices as I know can't draw on the side they picked on S Pen configuration for the hand they use. On my note on left side I can't draw near the edge of the screen about 2-3mm and on right side 0-2 mm depends from the position top or bottom. Have confirm that for 4-5 devices and Samsung dissent know aka didn't know till I mailed them they are searching if it is hard or software problem

It seems not to be working good indeed, but one thing that sorts the problem is to tilt the phone so the accelerometer detects the orientation of the screen and then draw the line, this way the tip caches the right place no matter if you draw in landscape or portrait, still its an extra step and I'm sure there must be a better solution driverwise.

Screen rotation only to the left?

Hello everyone.
I just got my X10 over the weekend and have started to play around with it. One thing I have noticed is that the screen will only rotate to landscape on one side (with the home buttons on the right in landscape mode). I've checked various videos on the net and they all seem to rotate in this direction, but don't show it going the other way. I checked my wife's Iphone and it rotates both ways. Can anyone let me know if this is an issue with the X10 in general, or just my phone. TIA.
Confirmed. the device only rotates on the left side. But i never thought about it before
-Bin4ry
Is there any reason why this would be a problem? must say I've not come across any occasion where I've thought that would be required.

It only rotates to the left, yeah. But I think it's great since I'm seriously annoyed with screen rotation at times. This way I can lie in my bed and write texts in portrait-mode with my phone on the side so to speak. And I don't want to turn it off completely since I use it when I look at pictures and browse the web. I just wish there was a way to disable screen rotation for different applications.
I believe this is the same for all droid phones. My buds Moto-DROID does the same thing and I do recal only being able to tilt the N1 in the same direction. On the DROID it makes sense to me, the physical keyboard only goes one way. However, my bud is left handed and he instinctively wanted to turn my x10 to the right so the hardware buttons are on the left and he coudltn. He immediately did not like the phone.
Thanks all,
this isn't really a problem for me, I just thought it was strange since I didn't really see a reason for it. This is my first Android phone, so I'm still getting used to the benefits and quirks of the system, and just thought it was odd. Well lets hope that we get an update to 2.1/2.2 or are able to root the heck out of this thing soon.
Cheers
The N1 use to do this too but in 2.2 it gained the ability to be rotated into landscape either way.
I reckon 1 way landscape rotation is the best thing ever... esp. with the reading lying down thing... I used to have to hold my Diamond on a weird 45 degree angle in those situations...
I bet you can think of a million reasons why it's great it only rotates one way, but I bet you'd struggle finding a decent reason why you'd need it to rotate both:
I have a problem and can only rotate my phone clockwise, this means I have to rotate it 270 degrees instead of 90, just to get it into landscape
I prefer to press the camera button with my thumb holding underneath the phone. Now I have to do it with my index finger like a normal person
I'm lefthanded - everything works backwards for me.

Touchscreen not sensitive enough?

Anyone feel the same with their GT10.1? I feel like sometimes I really need to press on an icon to make it launch or swipe really hard to get it to move.
Is there a way to increase the sensitivity? Anyone else notice this too?
It's not a huge problem just a minor annoyance. It just doesn't seem snappy.
I've noticed that about mine too. Nothing major but an annoyance nonetheless.

When I tried the Asus Transformer that's what I found, needed more pressure than I expected for it to register. My 10.1 seems fine, responds to very light touches nicely.
Is there a calibration setting somewhere?
I find myself hitting everything twice. First time it doesn't register, next time I push harder. My XOOM screen is more sensitive. Guess I'm too used to that. This effects swiping in the browser too. Its hard to push gently to move a page up and down. I have to push harder and then every once in a while the page ends up scrolling at high speed all the way to the top or bottom.
It seems to me that I just need to get used to using the larger capacitive touch screen. When first using a smaller touch screen everyone begins to realize what part of their finger is actually touching the screen. I don't know if the screen is any more or less sensitive but I've been getting better at using this larger screen and noticing which part of my finger actually making contact and where.
Ill tell you 1 thing for sure, this thumb keyboard is amazing! I think I might actually like it better than swype! You can really type quick and the auto correct works very Well!
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Here is some evidence that the sensitivity problems with the screen may be hardware/software related.
After a hard reset the screen appears to be very sensitive.
After an hour screen sensitivity seems to drop.
BUT there is something else going on - at the same time, after a hard reset my Targus capacitive stylus works normally on the Tabs screen.
At the time when the screen sensitivity seems to drop, the Targus stylus stops working. It can no longer be used to swipe the screen or scroll the browser. Finger swipe and scroll still works however.
Now why would the Targus stylus suddenly stop working, unless there is a real change in the capacitive sensitivity of the TAB 10.1 screen such that it falls below the threshold necessary to operate/detect the stylus?
The touchscreen on the Tab 10.1 definitely isn't as accurate or sensitive as the Xoom. I had both side by side for a few days before I returned my Xoom and you can definitely tell the difference.
However, I'll take the Galaxy's screen over the Xoom just from a contrast/color reproduction standpoint, so I guess there are pluses and minuses to everything.

Apparently Tegra 2 is not able to cope with all of the open tasks, live widgets, and have enough power left to make the immediate switch to a larger screem's touch commands.

I have a XOOM as well, and it handles multitasking just fine. There is no hesitation or lack of screen sensitivity at all. I pulled it out this morning and was amazed at how much smoother the user experience is. You tap once - the screen responds - on my GTAB 10.1 I have to conciously think about every click and half the time I still have to do it twice.

C'mon Samsung - need S-Pen calibration!

As a left-hander, the S-Pen SUCKS.
I've set the phone to left-handed, but that isn't the issue.
The phone expects the user to hold the pen at an angle away from the user, and that's where the screen registers.
However, many left handers hold their pens at an angle TOWARDS themselves, and the S-Pen is off by nearly HALF A CM!!

It's so irritating
are you sure you got it in left hand mode? i have mine set to my left hand and tried writing with my right. was off like you said (to the right). tried again with my left hand and it seemed fine.

I have it set to left handed.
When changing the settings to right-handed and using my right hand (I'm a little ambidextrous) it works fine. Nice and accurate. Mostly because with my right hand I hold the pen at a conventional angle.
However, many lefties don't hold their pens conventionally (habits picked up by the necessity of avoiding ring bindings, minimising smudging, etc). Look at how President Obama holds his pen:
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/images/200901/20090126ho_lefthandedobama_330.jpg
See how the nib of the pen is angled TOWARDS him? The Note thinks it's angled away and puts down a line in totally the wrong place.
Even with my slightly less unconventional left-handed pen hold, it's WAY out (no matter whether the unit is set to left or right hand use, though left is slightly less awful).
How hard can it be for Samsung to provide a calibration app?
Right now, the Note is a phone unsuitable for a President!
Do you find any difference when you change the screen orientation then back again?

None at all, unfortunately.
I find that no matter what I do with the pen it always seems to write half a cm above where I have contact on the screen

SPen uses autocalibration feature, which unfortunately goes off after some time. Which is a bug by itself but not the point..
Everyone complaining about pen being way off try this:
set it to whatever your hand preference. Please phone on flat surface like a table and reboot phone. Do not shake or touch it too much. Open SNote and try to draw around grid lines, you will see that pen works perfectly with tip being exactly as expected.
However more you use pen more it will deviate off until reboot is needed. It happens especially fast if you are using it walking, upside down etc.

Interesting (though it didn't help in my case)
But it the calibration goes off after time, then there is even more reason to add a calibration facility.
I reckon that only happens when you're using landscape orientation and then you turn off autorotation without first returning to portrait orientation. Try turning autorotation on, setting it to portrait and then turn it off. That should fix it.

Thanks, but it really is nothing to do with orientation in my case.
It's ALL about the angle at which you hold the S-pen.
It expects the nib to be angled away from you, whereas I hold a pen with the nib angled towards me.

Little one handed trick

Hey Everyone,
I do this every now and then, wondering if everyone else does.
Let's say I'm using the phone one handed, web browsing or something and I need to reach a button on the opposite bottom corner.
Rather than stretch across the screen, I just rotate the phone 90 degrees for a second. The screen rotates, and the button is now directly under my thumb. I click it, rotate back and move on.
Yes, the Note still sucks sometimes as a one handed phone, but this does help out every now and then.
- Frank
oh thanks nice idea
another way is to curl your finger around the back of the phone...I did try this, and looks really funny if you're watching from afar
I guess I just have big hands. The way I hold the phone, I can touch everything to the right of the blue line.
Ha.. same here. I've got big hands too. One overseas colleague once asked me if that is a S2 I'm holding.
If I'm holding the phone, you can only see 1/4 of it from the back. And only 1 cm separates my thumb to the closest finger when I hold it.
This is particularly useful if you're reading in landscape.

another trick for zooming during browsing with the stock samsung browser is to simulate 2 fingers. usually you can zoom in and out by putting them on the screen and overturn the phone.
so instead of using to fingers, just put your thumb on the left side of the screen, so that a small part of your palm touches the screen on the right, which simulates an input^^
i hope u understood what i mean
I never hold my phone 1 handed. I'm too afraid of dropping it. But I'll try your advice if I ever need to

Smart Rotate

Wondering if this is working for everyone? On my ALIE firmware the feature doesnt seem to function as described, i.e., my eyes/face rotating 45 degrees does not cause the screen to rotate at all.
keep the phone on a flat surface and rotate ur head it should work
press thanks if this helped

i wish it was that simple. Just doesnt work.
What are you trying to do?
Smart rotate is just for 90 degrees. Imho, it is for people lying down.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using XDA Premium HD app
Smart rotate doesn't check if your head rotated or not at random times, it only checks your heads/eyes position when the phone is rotated 90° (in other words, whenever the phone is supposed to rotate, it does an extra check before doing so)

Doesn't these face detection gimmicks like smart rotate and smart stay use gobs of battery power since the front camera is active e?

could be that your face is too ugly or disfigured for the feature to recognize it. sorry

It only checks every now and then.
In fact, I bet it only checks when the phone is rotated.
Regardless, the amount of power used by a quick camera check is minimal compared to the power needed to light the screen.
- Frank
Can confirm on mine, that this is to stop the screen rotating when you yourself rotate with the phone, for example when lying down.
It would seem it only checks when the screen attempts to rotate (you see an eye icon in the notification bar briefly). I do believe that this actually causes a slight delay when you do want to rotate the screen as it will need to do the check first.
i believe it needs to have a good clean shot of your face in portrait mode first, then it can detect your 2 eyes turning to landscape and thus do a rotate.
I need this feature when in bed at night (for reading mostly) but it doesnt work in the dark so its totally useless for me.
Samsung should have put in a small low power Infrared LED (which is a light source cameras can see but humans only see a dim red light) - this would have made the feature work in all situations or at least work in most situations.

Check the phone in complete darkness .. there is a very feint red light emitted from the sensor area!
Mine would rotate normally whether I enabled or disabled the option. When I rotate the phone, the eye icon would appear on the notification bar. It takes about 1 to 3 seconds, and then it rotate no matter where I'm pointing the front camera to. It would even rotate in the dark.

Yeah, I've noticed that too.
Is it some kind of IR-light?
This feature is a hit and a miss.. really annoying when watching an youtube video.. even before enabling this feature samsung warned about lag or slow screen rotation... probably they might be working on this feature and might release an update fix soon...
