I never had an Android tablet. Used the Hp touchpad for a while. I understand that Honeycomb does not support App2Sd. Taking this into consideration buying one with 8gb for a teenager would be wrong, no? I mean, of course he can store all his music on a microSD card but what happens to the apps an games?
On my Motorola Defy i have 2 GB internal + 8gb Card. I don't have to many big games installed, some music, navigation maps and i am almost out.I Usually games place content on the SD. So what happens with the tablet? Are 8gb+ 16/32GB SD enough?
For $229 how can you "not" buy it?
I run 16+32 on an a501. True, some of the games are honking big. But I'm not a huge game player. Yet I still have half the space internally free. That includes 5 dvd videos.
Besides, you'll probably root it and clear off most of the junk anyhow, and move most apps to the sd.
WOW... just bought an A100 for the wife on black Friday for 180 and now seeing this deal might have to re think. Looks like it will be priced that way for a while so ill let the wife decide.
just ordered the bestbuy a500
I'm getting one! 8g is more than enough for me. I have a 16gb card in my Nook and not even halfway with that.

If you root the a500, can you then move apps to SD?? I just downloaded the data for lets golf 3 and it was 819mb. I'm gonna run out of space fast this way. I picked up the 8gb thinking I would just stick in a big sdcard but I can't find an option to move apps to SD like froyo and gingerbread had. I do have titanium backup pro on my Evo 3d, once rooted will TB be able to move the apps?

The vast majority of games that I have seen are less than 10 megs. Yes there are a few that are honking big but if I recall correctly some of these games with huge data files ask you if you want to install the data onto an SD card no?
You will find that apps really don't take up that much space.
I have a Droid X that's over a year old with about 130 apps I've installed (the bloatware that came with it is still on too) and my internal 8GB of storage still has 5.6GB available. That's with ALL apps on the phone. Only data is on the SD card (movies, TV shows, music, PDF files, cache, etc.)
I think App2SD is a useless requirement for some people given the tiny size of most apps. Even the large ones that require 150MB or more of download to run (Need For Speed Shift, for example) did nothing to impact the 8GB.
130 apps in a bit over 2GB means I can still install roughly 360 more. I'll never use that many apps.

You must never have played any of the Gameloft games. The average size of their game data files are 400mb and like I said, the lets Golf 3 data files total 819mb, that's just shy of 1gb. I have only had my tablet for 3 days now and I can already see the memory is going to be a problem if I can't store the majority of the data on the sdcard. I am going to root it now and get rid of some of the bloatware but this may go back to Costco and I'll hunt down a 32gb version. Amazon has the 32gb for 419.

Actually, I downloaded the 3 free ones we get when you supply them with your serial number. Unfortunately, none of them were my cup of tea so I deleted them. I kept the Let's Golf one though it's a bit too kid-oriented for my tastes.
I know I've installed all the apps I have on my phone on the A500 so the memory usage is similar (I'm not home at them moment and can't tell you how much space is currently consumed). I got the 16GB A500 which is double the size of my Droid so I, for one, probably won't ever run out of space.
i actually have this same 8gb version. and for GAMELOFT games, i use "GL TO SD" app from the market to move the game files to EXTERNAL_SD. Gameloft is one of the very few HD game makers out there for android.
If anyones lookingfor an a500 I'm selling the one I just bought due to getting another tab for xmas, 16gb and 32gb sd card, rooted and thor rom. Just got it this week.

There is NO need for App2Sd in Honeycomb or higher as the main memory and the storage memory comes from one pool! App2sd is only necessary in Frodo. This is a GOOD thing. Therefore you have the whole memory to play with. All apps store on the built-in SD. (I don't know why anyone hasn't mentioned this before...

Didn't even know they were making them in 64gb. That's huge for only 399.99.
Expanded with a good mem card and you will never run out of space.
OP i've had my 8gb A500 loaded with stuff before and it never became a problem for internal storage. I just tend to put all my roms and music and movies and pictures on an external sd card.

I would also check Wal-mart... I purchased an A500 16mb for my wife before Christmas @ 249.99 (I have receipts for proof). not sure if it was a price mistake or what... but I bought a few of them and sold them on eBay.... one of the buyers changed their mind and I ended up with one also. Prices can vary from walmart to walmart
the only problem with the 8gb that I have is that once in a while I have to remember to move stuff I grab off the web as that's mostly stored internally. To get better space usage, grab "Disk Usage" on the market.

Hi,
We are able to unlock the bootloader ...
We got root ...
My question, is it possible to repartition the storage?
For example: Right now, there is only 1GB space for internal storage.
Is it possible to create 2GB?
And if it is possible, will it be a problem if Google have another OS update?
I meant, does Android OS update will check the "original" storage "layout"?
Thanks
excellent question.
I'd like to know as well, as i already have 1.5 GB of apps & games installed on my SGS that i plan to restore to the Nexus S when it arrives
meaning i'm already over the limit, and i've not even started yet
The answer is probably no. The same question was raised on the MT4G/G2 forums regarding their internal storage and it was determined that the eMMC/storage/whatever it's called chip can only be flashed one time. After that, it is physically impossible to change how it's partitioned in any way.
Now, granted, this is a Samsung device and, thus, they may use different chips. I find it unlikely, though, that it will be any different.
there might be a chance if Nexus S is indeed another breed of the Galaxy S family.
if it's fixed size and not changeable, then it's a good news for us, we will not see the corruption problems we found on many SGS when people repeatedly formatted their Internal SD to try different things
but on the other hand, it will kinda suck, as that will really limit the amount of Apps we can install in the device.
which will put a very heavy enphasis on using App2SD even more

You know, a gigabyte for apps goes a very long way. I had 130 apps on my i9000, lots of big ones like CoPilot and some games. I never even got over the 500mb mark on using up my app storage.
Never say never, of course, but I can't imagine worrying about app space on my phone. I'm sure I'll have a new one with much better specs by next summer, which, if apps start growing in size, will have more memory.
How do you have 1.5GB of apps? I have over 150 installed, and they're only like 300MB. Granted, I don't have a ton of games, but I still think it would be hard to get that many apps.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
Unless planning on only using as an ereader and web device, the less than seven gigs of total usable storage between apps and data/media storage kind of makes the device pointless.
Why bother? Especially people that dwell in these forums.
I dont know, I'm more of a "glass is half full" person. Considering the price point and Amazon's excellent return policy, I dont see the harm in getting it into your hands and deciding then.
I for one do not use a huge amount of storage space. I don't keep music or movies on my phone. But the SD card is still useful for backing up my apps and data. I'm mostly concerned about how the lack of an SD card is going to impact your ability to hack stuff.
As long as I can hack the thing to run stock Android, I don't care about the lack of an SD card.
I think it's best to think of the built-in storage as cache. Amazon is trying to everything on its cloud. Books, videos, music... all stored on their cloud. When you need it, it'll cache it locally.
Same goes for backup. No need to backup to a SD card because it'll automatically be backed up to their cloud.
Err..
I think there is a certain missed point here that the author felt was going to be picked up. (Correct me if I am wrong.)
First, you can only keep AMAZON purchases in the cloud.
Second, while the processor is impressive.. they ripped out a lot of "nice" things which would have been cool to have.. I mean if it didn't have dual core 1ghz processor.. it would just be another "value tablet" or hell it would be frowned upon more than that due to the lack of bells and whistles.
So, the problem we have.. Is if you plan on doing anything besides ereading you are out of luck.. (and lets be real here.. if this was only being looked at as an ereader, it wouldn't have a forum here.)
Since you can't load whatever you want to the cloud, your stuck with 8 gigs which might be "ok" if it was *ONLY* an ereader.. However, honestly.. by the time you root it.. install the latest version of Cyanogen and possibly load a few songs on there.. most of your space is done.
Aside from that, the fact that it has no optional SD card slots may complicate the rooting/unrooting process. I would buy a Nook Color for 50$ more, because I can run CM7 from an SD card and not void my warranty since I could dual boot it. Especially if the kindle fire ends up unable to go back to stock.

Except with new nook colors on the way, the original isn't going to cost more than the fire anymore. I can imagine new condition original NCs going for $150 or less over the holidays.
The fire is a sweet tab at a nice price and I've been eagerly awaiting details all summer, but for some folks the slot is going to be important. I boot my TP2 android build from the SD card, and I like the low risk nature of it. Not sure if with a NC I would go nand or sd, but I like having the option.
Honestly for 150$ i'd probably grab the Nook Color..
unless the lenovo A1 was priced the same and had equal dev support.
I'm definitely holding off on kindle to see what else comes out... I am wondering if others are going to try to beat kindle to the punch.. or if they are going to think it is worth it..
I mean it is hard to compete if amazon takes a loss on hardware in hopes of making it up in software.

Dwelling.......... Here.
sent from my Infuse at Tranquility Base.
Ive got a Viewsonic gTablet which has around 16GB of internal space
Ive run Cyanogen and it takes up maybe a half a gig of room, that would leave around 7GB of storage
most of the apps I use are installed on and stored on the internal parition which is around 2GB, so that leaves around 1.5GB of usable space of which my apps take up about 500MB
out of the 14GB I have on the second parition of the 16GB onboard SD card I have 9.3GB free, and its storing all my ROMs...
I use less than 5GB for storage, so 8GB seems like plenty to me for now
I wont be keeping terabytes of video and music on this tablet so it doesnt matter to me personally
even with my gtablet I use less than 8GB, I stream most everything I watch on it as well
wouldnt be any different for the Kindle Fire...
I would prefer some kind of external storage option, but thats ok, its not required
A SD slot would be nice but not that big of a deal. I already have my on
pre-order. Most Rooting and Roms can be done with out a removable SD
card, the Nexus S 4g doesn't have a removable SD. I have rooted and gone
back and forth from stock to custom works just fine.

Exactly.... Why would you want the ROM on the SD card? I guess its to keep stock on your phone? But I thought we were the ones that didn't care about stock and were pushing the envelope... Well I came in at Droid 1... We didnt have SD card option back then. You either voided your warranty or you did what Verizon told you too. So I ask you this... When you your own Admin on your own phone... can't you write your own Warranty?

Er.
I will push the envelope. I have CM7 on my captivate.. The issue is I can odin to stock.
There isn't always an easy way to go back to stock. And if I'm going to get a kindle fire I am going to use it as a full on tablet.
I already have over 8 gigs in play on my phone a lone :/
I have no problem flashing, rooting or anything else. If I completely break my device and it is my fault, I'm not going to make someone else pay for my mistakes.
On the other hand, I always want a way to go back, in case of faulty hardware which does happen time to time.
So even though it isn't dual core..if your going to flash anyway.. it makes the nook color a bit more appealing.. especially since it will probably get a price drop soon :/
Hey, to each his own. you know? We don't have to agree I hope the Nook works out for you brother. Personally, I am going with the fire I don't have a need to return faulty hardware and if I do I will figure it out when I do.

Where did you get this information from? I have been searching for an answer as to whether non Amazon content can be stored and I don't see any indication that it can't be. Currently you can store non Amazon content in their cloud. I hope that holds true for the fire.
A micro SD card slot would have been nice.
But for $199 I'm not going to complain. It has superior hardware compared to some of the tablets priced in that range.
Dropbox will give you another 2gb cloud storage for free and you can get tons more cheaply if you need it.
Since I stream everything, I don't get what the fuss is about no SD card.
Same as the people fussing over the lack of cameras, mic, bluetooth and 3g. I have a phone to take care of those things plus I'll just use my phone's 4g wifi hotspot to get online if I need to.
The KF will be just perfect for instant on email checking, light web browsing and some book reading. For $199 it's great value.
Would a micro usb flash drive do the same thing?
Amazon has their own storage service that they want to sell you a subscription to. Also, having no SD card makes a little more difficult to hack. No doubt Amazon watched the NC get hacked and not used to buy B&N products and want to ensure they get additional revenue for the subsidizing the cost of the Fire.

Err.. I think this is subject to debate. I may be sitting around christmas going "Man wish I'd have pre-ordered earlier!" However, the Lenovo A1 is also coming out, there are probably going to be even more tablets now and they are going to be even more competitive.
Really.. the Amazon Tab is lacking. I mean I hate to invoke the name, because it seems to grant instant flame wars.. However, We crucify another brand which is very popular among the general population for these kinds of tactics.
I mean I really feel like all people are reading is "IPS screen, Dual core, 199$" which is a very compelling device.. however, it is a pretty hard sale.

dropbox won't give you anything last I checked. It requires you to have however much space you want to use on the actual device.
To me 3g is a ripoff anyway I will admit. Camera's aren't something I require on every single device I buy.. and honestly.. blue tooth is cool but not a prerequisite.
I really just think expandable storage (especially on an 8GB device) would be highly beneficial. I mean If I am wrong and you can throw whatever you want on the cloud I may reconsider.
The other issue I have.. although not a deal breaker.. is it looks like no physical buttons.. I at least want a back, home and menu.. Admittedly I have that problem with nook too but, it's w/e.

Is it really? How much storage soace does the average person need? Not the person ripping in loss less, not the one ripping blue rays, but someone that rips 128 mp3s and just wants to bring them around? That is the group manufacturers need to cater to. I only had the 16gb original Note10.1, and I never had any problems with space, as I installed everything that wasnt an app onto a 64gb external SD Card.
And so I didnt think twice about getting the 16gb Note10.1(2014), cos I knew I'd end up using the same apps, and the same SD Card in fact lol.
By the way, if you're thinking of rooting, you might as well just get the 16gb one because:
1) You can install apps onto the external SD Card then anyway (least you can on other devices, I assume it would work on this one too)
and
2) At the moment the knox thing means you get no warranty, so you might as well go for the cheapest device just in case.
If you arent rooting (I'm not at the moment, until knox is sorted out) then it depends on how many apps you plan to install. I only use my tablet for drawing, writing, and reading, and browsing, and these apps dont take up huge amounts of space (the biggest space is taken up by my sketchbook pro picture files), everything else (books, comics, videos) are all on external storage.
Games are your only issue, but I only occasionally get a couple games on there, and I uninstall them when i finish with them.
Hope this has been vaguely helpful anyway!

Thats only for the LTE Snapdragon version, which as far as I know isnt even for sale over here yet, and is more expensive anyway (and a waste of money but anyway).
The normal WiFi version doesnt have a proper root yet. There was a pledge to get one done, but the person who took the money only gave a basic root which trips knox, so its pretty much worthless.
I dont think people are going to put up another pledge either, unfortunatly. Bit of a shame really, if it doesnt get sorted out then this device may die a slow developmental death.
Fingers crossed though, that something may get transferred over from another device someday.
Edit: I should say "Worthless to me", as I know some people were happy with losing their warranties. Not sure why, but to each their own.
I agree with everything @nirurin has said apart from " I didnt think twice about getting the 16gb"
I was stressing on getting the 32GB and like you my country isn't selling the 32GB so in the end I decided to just live with the 16GB and tbh its the best decision I made and saved loads of money. I have about 9GB free and this is after pretty much all my major apps have been installed. I have a few movies and TV shows which are all on my 64GB external SDcard but I have no games installed on my Note yet. But I'm positive that even with games I shall have plenty of space available.
But you have to bear in mind everyone uses their tablets completely differently some people on here have nearly filled their 32GB and some (Like me) will be more than happy with 16GB - Best of luck.
I also got the 16gb. I did consider getting the 32gb from Expansy (when it was only £450) but I figured a 2 year warranty was more important. I also came from the original galaxy note 10.1 tablet and that was also a 16gb. However, I felt it was a substantial amount for me as I had a 32gb micro sd card. I just store all my videos, etc onto there. I'm not fussed about rooting in all honesty although maybe I'll consider it in the future. For me though, I'm personally happy with the amount of storage. But I guess think realistically what you'd use your tablet for and how long it would take for roms to be made for this tablet.

We paid the developer for root, with or without tripping, he earned his money. And we all paid after it was done, so everybody knew about knox counter problem.
I paid $90 for 3rd party warranty for 3 or 4 years (I'm sure I won't keep this tablet that long) and they cover rooted devices too. Not worthless for many of us.
You need to be careful as in some apps like bbc iplayer and Skygo download internally and not to the sd card.
G'day
My question: is a 16GB tablet enough space?
(This I wrote so any reader can quickly see if he wants to read on or not, so: for reading comfort).
Casus:
- I am probably the last on earth who buys a tablet laugh
- I found a I think nice deal: new Xperia Z2, 16GB, with original power charge cradle, 350 EUR.
- The problem: 16GB.
- I also have a bloatware HTC One SV which refuses to take updates 'because of not enough space (and I can't uninstall any apps since it is all Google standard apps that can't be uninstalled). So that triggered my thinking:
So that makes me worry: is 16GB enough space for the OS and all the stuff apps will want to install on the internal 16GB, now and in the future?
Ellaboration:
- As is said in many threads on this forum, put in a SD card and store, music, docs etc on that. Sound thinking.
- But, as I am generally rather a noob on smartphones and apps (not on FreeBSD, 'though, so not a complete 'puternoob :angel, I have no clue which part of the storage I can't control. I mean, if every app only wants it data stored on the internal disk, and if the OS will grow from (I think 4 gig now?) to suddenly 15 gig in Android 5.0 (I understood that is comng to the Z2 too), then the external SD card will be rather useless - the apps and the OS won't use it.
Of course, I'd rather have the 32GB, but that comes in at 500 EUR, so I thought I'd try to save myself the 150 EUR and spend these on flowers for my wife instead :victory:
So, will the 16GB in all fairness be enough for the OS and all the stuff apps will want to store on it (so: data on the external SD, provided of course then the installed apps will want to 'see' the external SD for reading the stored docs/movies/music/pics)?
Thank you in advance very much for any help
Bye,
I have the 16gb one, it's enough space for me I have many large games and a bunch of apps on it and I think I don't even used up half the space. Although it depends on what you plan on using your tablet for.
One way of making sure you have enough space is to root and unlock the device that way you can install custom roms which typically are smaller than the stock one, or just uninstall the bloat that comes with stock.
I don't know where you heard that android 5 will be 15 gigs but I highly doubt that it will be that big.
For me it is not enough, i have the 16GB Xperia Z phone, and i was sick of the "Not enough space" warning, so i bought the 32GB Z2 Tablet and i couldn't be happier. I have lots of games, all the apps i need. i also enjoy emulators so i can have them plus gigs of roms, and all the media i need in a 32GB SD card.
I will never, ever, buy a 16GB device.
With sd card and root you have atleast 16 + 64 GB to use for data and also for apps. Haven't try 128 GB sd card but 64 GB works fine.
It's not much more money for double the space. Seems silly not to save up a bit longer and buy the 32gb version. You can never upgrade later and apps and operating systems get bigger and bigger.
Thank you all very much for your reply
Of course, I agree, it is better to buy 32GB when you can. But given the current price offer for the 16GB, buying the 32 GB makes 16GB more costs 150 EUR, 195 USD, more.
So 16GB for 195 USD/150 EUR; GB's, the new gold
So I didn't say Android 5.0 will be 12GB, but, I mean: I like to buy as a not 'throw away next year'-consumer; I tend to try and use my gear for 10 years (works fine for my FreeBSD servers, used to work fine with my old Nokia's as well, I have no idea how it will turn out with smartphones and tablets).
So, given that:
IF 16GB will be useless one or two years (or three, or four) down the road, I will be forced to pay 150 EUR/195 USD more now for the lousy 16GB extra.
So that is what I am trying to find out: provided I agree user data should be stored on an external card so you can leave the internal card for the OS and apps and their config and flux data, I still have no clue how many of the OS and apps will respect this rule as well. I mean: if media app X decided it can only read the media (books, audio, vids), if it resides on the internal HDD, I am forced to move media from the external SD card to the internal HDD.
Question comes up: is there some sort of mandatory Android programming rule that every app should be able to read user data from external SD cards? Or is it up to a perhaps sloppy programmer, who decides the app can only use user data when it is on the internal HDD? (Don't laugh: Windows 3.1 demanded all data on C:\ ...).
Also, I understood for some (stupid) reason Google seems to have decided apps are no longer allowed to be stored on the external SD card (?)
(Well, I do understand why Google wants this: it wants the world to use their cloud for storage and stuff: handy for subscriptions and for sales of data to governments; double the pleasure).
So I still don't know what to do :cyclops:
Thanks again for your comments; very much appreciated
I installed most of my apps and I have about 19GB free. However, I'm sure as time goes on other things will eat up that space, especially cache.
I know you can move some apps to SD, but preferably I like to keep everything on system ROM for speed. I was trying to avoid getting into the low memory dilemma with my next my phone (ran into that with my S5). I'm just not feeling Samsung's crystal ball/balloon screen vibes and I just wanted to get away from Samsung period. I'm very happy with the phone so far, but just wish they would've added the 64GB ROM or gave us the option to choose... Hopefully as Android matures, it won't become an issue for me.
I do. I would have preferred 64GB.

The 32gb was to keep the price of the phone down but you're right it would been nice to have a choice.Funny thing is I said wouldn't buy a phone without 64gb after have the s7 edge and the v20.But I really like this phone

I bought this to replace the iPhone I use as my desk/work phone. I would not buy it for my primary phone because of the 32 GB limit. My S7 Edge is always close to full even with pics going to the SD card. 64 GB should be table stakes to enter the "flagship" phone line in 2017.
The good news for you and others there are always other phone to buy.
I've got 16gb free on my 32gb phone (not a g6).
Not an issue for me, i hate lots of apps anyway.
That's not to say i was a little disappointed, but realistically i probably won't ever need more than 32gb, just would have been nice to have.
I can't even imagine filling up 32 GB with apps. All my music is on the SD card, photos go to Google photos and some apps that aren't speed dependent are on the SD card. I've got 18gb free and 4gb of the used space is my exchange email account.

It's not the apps to be concerned with as much as the OS will naturally gain size as updates are released/put out and naturally apps tend to increase as well (though that seems to have plateaued considerably). My last flagship phone was on the low end before and it felt like I got burnt for their oversight because I was really hurting for space before it was even paid off. I don't feel like I use a lot of apps. I don't even game on my phone. I trim/delete things regularly just to keep stuff organized.

Photos and music go to large SD so that's not the issue. I also have 1TB of cloud space. I don't game on my phone or anything. It's more about the fact a flagship phone that costs $650 is using the lower end of memory when idealistically they should be gunning for a 64GB ROM at this point to make space for larger ROMs, future changes to apps to future proof, etc. If that makes sense...
