Bad mic quality (with solution and pic guide) - Galaxy S II General

Lot's of my friends complained about dumb speech quality on my sgs2, currently on Cyanogen but with stock firmware too. With stock firmware i could disable noise reduction, which i had to do with every call, but it didn't make it really good.
Warning: The following will viod your warrenty and you can easily damage your phone! Just in case: i told you so and it's your responsibility, not mine...
Today i opened the phone (removed battery, sim, microsd), 6 or 7 small screws, with fingernail along all sides of the phone lifteing the two parts carefully apart, Being aware not to loose the plastic power and volume parts. I made the lower mic hole a little bit bigger, removed the rubber housing of the mic (lift it up a little bit and gently pulling away from phone) and made the hole a litte bit bigger (using a small flat screwdriver to access the inner part and a scalpel) , cutting away a little bit of the inside hole. After reassembling i used a paper clip to press the mic towards the display and the rubber piece to the bottom.
Now with picture guide, see page 2, thanks to speedys4 !
My friends asked me if i had a new phone after testing!
Finally this great piece of hardware does even phoning right!

It really doesnt.... it is just 7 screws and pushing a pin/small screw driver into the mic hole after you haver removed the mic guard and then refitting everything. (then making sure the mic guard is refitted properly once everything is back together by looking in the mic hole, you should see the entire hole of the mic guard and a little block inside which is the mic).
If your unsure how to do any of that, even after reading the simple instructions above, I recommend you dont take apart your £300 phone yourself...
Also this fix is posted on page 8 on this topic
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127103&page=8
along with other software fixes. But like you say. 5 minutes work and its even better! and you get to keep noise cancelation!

Just did the same thing - removed rubber from lower mic. Tested - now seems I can really use speakerphone =D

Many thanks!!!
You have helped make my phone so much more perfect!!! thank you so so much!! I had to use a stanley knife but hey ho it worked and only one scarred finger, but well worth it!!

I assume it also resolves the echo issue too? It's discussed in details here, disabling noise cancellation fix it as well.
I would really appreciate if someone does a step-by-step picture guide.
Edit: Anyone knows a ROM that lets you to disable Noise Reduction by default? I've already tried the fix in VillainTweaks but that didn't work for me.

i have the original samsung black soft rubber case, i had to make the charging hole bigger because even the small microusb connector wouldn't fit otherwise. so i made a bigger mic hole too.
i don't hear any echos.

You don't hear the echoes, but the people calling you hear their own echo unless you disable NR.

nope, calling works well for me, noone i'm phoning too complains. i'm on the offical cyanogen 7.1 with radio ki4 right now and there is no way to disable NR afaik...

I made It this modification last month, there is some photos, I removed rubber from first(main microphone) and enlarge the both holes.

All I did was enlarge the main mike to about 1,5mm and totally cover the noise cancellation mike.
Works like a charm,
G

I will get back rubers to microphones, and make bigger holes in both rubbers.
now its crystal clear sound

I had to do the same on mine: cutting rubber and enlarge the hole, now it sounds good.

Congrats on the DIY.
But can you also help me on increasing my Bluetooth Mic Volume levels?
I've tried the service mode option which is not a permanent fix and I don't find it good.
Thanks!

Turn your JAM to ultimate MP3 player

This is the first mod that I am doing to all my PocketPC Phone devices - modifying stereo headset. Original ones are Ok if you intend using them for 10 minutes or so, after that is just a plain torture. Well, at least for me.
Here is the result of my mod. Standard heads are replaced with SONY MDR EX51LP. Paired with this little addon for adjusting bass and treble it creates amazing result. In fact, it sounds better than any standalone mp3 player

Wwoo nice.. talking about torture. I used the ones that come with the PDA2K for 50 min straight now.. Jesus... it made me think the machine it self output garbage. The ones that come with the PDA2K are more suited for calls not music.. I wonder if there's anywhere to purchase something like you did. I don't have time myself for modifications.. I wouldn't mind the mic.. Maybe i'll just find a plug converter and plugin my sony's to the i-mate.. Good job you did.. looks professional
Thanks
It took me maybe 15 min to do
Of course, adapter will work, but them if someone calls you while you listen to the music you'll have to unplug headset and use the unit itself. In this case, just press a buttom
Another good solution is to buy the SE headset. It works just fine with the JAM including the mic. I may go for the one with the radio on it as well. And that makes the Compact/JAM really complete!!

I can't post step-by-step pictures since unit is already assembled. sorry. But it's really easy:
1. Take apart this middle thingy by inserting your nails or very thin plastic knife. Meake sure no ti brake 4 little plastic clips, 2 on each side.
2. Take off top part.
3. Gently push wire from headphones side in to give some freedom for the circut board.
4. Lift it up the cisrcuit board and expose soldering points
5. Write down existing coloring of the wires soldered.
5. Unsolder
6. Cut appropriate lenght from Sony or whatever you wanna use.
7. Prepare wires for soldering
8. Don't forget to twist the wire the same manner as the original was.
9. Test headphones with case open and make sure both channels are working
10. Gently close cover
Sorry, was typing this in the rush. Feel free to ask more
I'm with ya
could you post a close up picture of the soldering?

I think of attaching a 3.5mm female plug just above the accept/reject button on the headphones so i can plug any headphones + i won't loose my expensive shruce..
but i always face problems in baring the wires of headphones they are very thin and fragile and can be cut easily i don't know about xda II headphones but im afraid that i will end up loosing it..
ID64 what do you think is the most adequate method of baring the wires????

Dropped it: speaker dead

I dropped my HTC TYTN some days ago and since then my external speaker is dead...
so no ringing, TomTom directions or just any other sound.
vibration and calling works ok though.
Any ideas how to fix the sound?
Problems with both speakers have been dealt with before here's one thread:

To sum up:
Rear speaker - likely problem is that the push on connector has slipped off - relatively easy fix is remove back and re-seat the connector. It is seen here at the top of the photo (white block with red and black wire)

The front earpiece speaker has spring contacts which can become bent and loose contact with m/board - normally just need bending out a little. This speaker is more prone to faults though and might need replaced. Can be replaced with Motorola L6/L7 earpiece speaker (available here http://www.phatphones.com/mobile-phone-repairs-1.htm#speaker) as a close alternative to original. A more difficult fix as the motherboard must be removed:

LoL, yes that might well work for quite a few people, given that the cause is just a poor contact with the board. As far as giving folks advice though, I'm not sure that telling people to drop their PDA is advisable

I have not found a source for them yet!
The usual parts site does not have it unfortunately:
http://cnn.cn/shop/htc-tytn-c-277_279.html
If you have some basic electronic/electrical skills you could find a similar phone speaker from another model. So long as it is small enough to fit the balck plastic speaker housing. You would need to use the original connection block from the Tytn and wire it onto the equivalent speaker.

Head-in-a-bucket microphone

Can anything be done about the poor mic. sending HIAB signals to others? To me it is in a crazy place on the side exactly where you old the phone, so your fingers cover the mic. hole. there also seems to be a plastic shroud over the mic. once the back is off. Does this shroud do anything?
Thanks

I've also read that some users puzzled about that opening at the side before.
Atm, I'm not really sure what to do.
I'll take a closer look this evening.
I guess a Dremel can help us out of this situation
I'll be back later, as reallife takes too much time atm...
Thanks for that McK.
There is a plastic insert over the Mic. hole in the chassis, if that makes sense, reducing the actual orifice to a very small aperture.... so a dremel should not be required. I just wonder why they have sleeved it down with an extra piece of plastic and not included the moulding in the main case. You might know, having disassembled your phone!
Just did some investigation...
It seems to be really the mic underneath that little cover.
I don't know what the phone did wrong to be treated that bad by S///E.
I thought first that heavy fastened vibra engine is worst of all.
But a soldered mic?
WTF?
There isn't even a chance to switch the mic with a solder iron.
You had to give it a try with a hot air station.... or throw the phone to the basket (what I guess is intended by S///E).
But another thing:
I tested the mic from the test suit within the service menu.
Whatever I did, which hole I covered....
The recording volume remained similar at all time?
So maybe that whole "uuuh, I placed my finger to the hole of the mic and nobody hears me " might be false + placebo?
Could anybody else please give it a try?
My Ears aren't that good anymore
So its just a crap mic. or poor accoustic software then?.........................
You can easily point it out:
Use a Headset.
- If Mic quality is still bad; its the software.
- If Mic quality get better; the onboard mic sucks..
I'd say its that subminiature onboard mic
I can't say it after all.

Replacement of broken headphones with SENHEISER earbud

After 6 months of using headphones on my Samsung Galaxy Note, I noticed that the Samsung earbud snapped it self as you see in picture. for unknown reason, certainly not from me because I keep them safely in SENHEISER purse.
View attachment 1400252
So I decided to replace my handset with SENHEISER earbud (anyway, the sound was very bad).
During disassembly noticed that the handset is permanently glued, so that there is no other way but to break it open.If you try to open it, you would encounter this fact.

Right Earbud,
white wire is ground and red is right channel
Left Earbud, (sorry no picture) green ground wire is a blue left channel.
And after 20 minutes of work and soldering, here's how it looks.
For the sound I will not even talk (SENHEISER QUALITY:good, everything works fantastic.
nice job :good:
It would be nice if you added a female mini-jack so you could use the original Samsung cable and microphone and use any headphones you could like.
I made my custom fit earbuds using a Sugru substitute you can easily make at home.
http://www.instructables.com/id/How...stitute/step14/Comparison-of-Oogoo-and-Sugru/
To prepare the earbud, I remove the rubber cone and cut away the "bell" leaving only the "cylinder" portion which I replace on the shaft it came from.
I placed a single layer of Saran Wrap™ over my ear, then indented a portion into my ear canal - to provide a barrier to prevent any possible skin irritation from the acetic acid produced during curing.
I mixed the silicone caulk ( not GE II ) and cornstarch about 50/50, applied a portion to an earbud while it was still quite sticky (being careful not to plug up the hole in the cut off rubber cylinder), waited for it to set up a little so that it wasn't gooey (more formable), then shaped it a bit to a cone, then inserted it into the indent in the Saran Wrap™ in my ear and waited about 10 minutes for it to cure.
I love the sound so much I rarely take them out of my ears.
Here's a picture...
Good job ,but as someone said you should of used mini female . I love this -see pic as I can use my full size cans without degrading them with switches in the path when I want to use on other things . Plus I've a lot of cans so I'm not tied to my S 485s

Headphone jack borked... sound in one ear!

Anyone have suggestions of how to troubleshoot a potentially faulty headphone jack? Sound is only coming out of the right earbud and nothing on the left (even after twisting and bending a bit). I've tried using multiple sets of earbuds and they work in other devices properly so I know they aren't the problem. And yes, I've pushed as hard as possible and they were fully inserted.
Check your ear?
That happened to me a couple times. Just turn the volume up all the way while playing music for a couple seconds. Worked for me...

Make sure it's plugged all the way in, the headphone jack is pretty tight and you kind of have to jam it up in there.
Also make sure your not using a mono adapter or something.

It's definitely all the way in. Tried turning up the volume and no success. I've tried plugging in/out about 50 times to see if maybe a contact wasn't connecting internally. According to Wikipedia, the left sound comes from the tip of the plug whereas the right sound comes from the ring around the plug in between the two insulating rings. It would then sound to me that the tip of the plug isn't making contact as it should. Any thoughts?

Take the back cover off and see if you can notice any solder joints cracked.
This happened to me when I used earphones that had an inline microphone.

The one white - iPhone headset : only one side sound
The one black : to the speaker : same problem as the white.
But when i moved the jack around, sound came normal?!
I don't have any pairs with a microphone so that can't be the problem. I also took the back off and check the solder joints and everything looks good even when pushing and prodding a bit, no sound came out of the left side. Could possibly be a broken contact inside? Suggestions on how to fix a broken contact if that's the case?
I blew into the headphone jack and it started working perfectly lol. Odd... didn't know old school Nintendo game strategies still worked.

Same here....
headphone jack is jacked....sound only comes through right ear. Tried multiple headphones and they are all plugged all the way in. Going back to Office Depot tomorrow!
So what i did was take the back off and taped down the flex cable so it wont move... it messes up a bit time to time but until i buy a broken one and do the swap this works out for me
Solved it
Hi ,
I had the same issue , moving the jack inside a little bit made it work , but as soon as I let go it starts to lose audio from right cup
I opened up the nexus 7 back cover. there wasn't any noticeable crack in the soldering but this definitely felt like solder was not applied properly or it had cracked (notice that the audio jack can move quite a bit when plugged in)
here is what I did.
There are 3 connections soldered on the module and there is a wire strip.
my issue was in the right earphone so my problem was in the middle one (upper on on the left side)
First I just heated it with a solder Iron it worked fine for about 2 weeks. then the issue started to show up again.
This time I added a little more solder to the point and that got it working, been working fine since then.
If it still gives you issue, you can unscrew only this part and solder it from the bottom too. there are pad there too.
I hope this helps
I realize this is a very old thread but, I just encountered this issue on my old one m8 and I can say that blowing into the jack did fix the issue. Thank you!
