[Q] Recovery Mode Error Screen - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I just got a used MyTouch 4G which seems to work flawlessly with stock 2.2.1 and 2.3.4. I'm trying to root and flash it with a custom rom.
I've reverted back to 2.2.1 stock, visionary, done s=off, and have root access. I install CWM 5.0.2(?) but when I try and go into recovery mode either through ROM Manager or the choose recovery from the ROM Manager menu but then when I try to do something I get a black screen with the Hat and circle arrow and it just sits there.
I didn't have this problem with my Nook, am I missing something?
Thanks,
Lich

Hit the power button when you see the hat wearing arrow. The menu is hidden, power makes it visible. Use the trackpad click to make selections, not power. Volume rocker and trackpad can be used to move the highlight, but power shows/hides the menu.

Thanks guys!
I completely noobed it somehow, and thought it only vol. power would work. I accidentally hit the trackpad and was like "AHH! got it!"
All working now just trying to decide on the ROM!
Just a follow up question. Is there a reason why many of the ROMs seem to have been abandon? Are the chefs working on ICS or moved on to another phone?

[Q] Help please....

hello...could anybody help me please...i was updating my htc magic to [ROM][32b] Official AOSP 2.2 OTA...but after i copied the update to sd,and i rebooted at the recovery menu i couldn't scroll to select the update.zip..it takes very long n i decided to pull out the battery n restart it again..unfortunately it went wrong somewhere n the phne keep on restarting again and again...i've tried to hard reset and all...but it won't works...help pleasee...
no replies yet...that's very sad..
If you can get to the recovery screen try wiping and factory reset.and flash a different rom. If that doesn't work. You can always do the unroot method by using the smping.mbh file or something like that. Look up how to unroot in google and you should know what I mean. Hope this helps

thanks lucas..but,the problem is that i can't get the recovery...it's keep on restarting again and again..??any idea?
Well then you need to unroot your mytouch it basically puts it back in factory settings and you do it through fast boot. I'm guessing you have the original mytouch this how I did it

You don't need to get in recovery screen. Turn the phone off and hold the up volume button and the power button and fast boot the sapping.nbh file
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
What I did is:
Through fastboot I flashed SAPPIMG.nbh. It put my phone to the cupcake (1.5). Then I installed rooted HTC 1.6 update. After that I flashed any Rom I wanted.
Tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=586363
PS: This is the only working way I know since I am a noob too and finally got it going. Tried almost every rom in this section

You're very welcome. this method had saved my phone from being bricked like a hundred times.if the g2 had a fail safe like that I would of already rooted it. Glad I could help

yo lucas...sorry for the late reply..now the phone had the same problem again...i just tried to do recovery using ROM manager..but after it saves everything and reboot and the splash screen looping continuosly again..damn it..it's my 2n tiime now..grrrr!!i tried ur method n it didn't work...n seems there is alot of people with this same problem when i tried to search around..seems there is no better solutions yet for this "semi-brickd" problems..
So you can't put it back to stock? If you manage to get it back to stock by doing the same thing you did beforev you should try using a different recovery. aman-ra's recovery is the best for me. But I can't see how you can't get into the fastboot screen by pressing power and volume up,that's never failed for me. If its really impossible you should have tmobile replace it. I don't think they can tell you hacked it if they can't even get into fastboot.sorry if I took long to answer

Flashing stock recovery with cm7 ROM

Hi guys, sorry if it is a stupid question, but am I okay to flash the stock recovery while I'm running cm7?
My battery life is horrible so I just want to try the work around that involves charging while the phone is off and we know cwm recovery doesn't work like that right now.
I would flash back to cwm 3 afterwards.

Here's a link to one of TrueBlue_Drew's =bazillion= answers to this question. His method allows you to have two versions of CW Recovery available via the Rom Manager. Since the Rom Manager does not support CW Recovery 3.x, that version is stored as "2.5.1.4". With CW 3, ROM Manager is used only for going back and forth between CW 2 and 3.
Hope this helps.

I've actually talked to TrueBlue and I came up with the idea of making the oemrecovery and renaming it, recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.1. He is supposed to be updating his guide here shortly but I just spoke with him regarding this last night.
Basically, download the oemrecovery, go to the clockwork folder on your sdcard and go clockworkmod>download>koush.tandgaming.com>recoveries. Drop the oemrecovery into that spot on the sdcard and rename it EXACTLY recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.1. Once that's done you can now go into rommanager scroll down to all clockworkmod recoveries and choose 2.5.1.1. That is now your stock recovery. you can reboot into the stock recovery, and keep the phone off to charge it. Once done, reboot the phone, go back to rommanager and click 2.5.1.4 and that will give you cwm3.xxx back. If this helps you, please hit the thanks button!
Thanks. Sorry for posting in the wrong section.
I'm aware I can flash back to 2.5.1.2, but for some reason I recall that this also went into recovery when charged. I'm probably wrong about that though .
amac, that sounds like a very elegant solution. I'll have too give that a shot.
I was really mostly concerned that not having 3.x would somehow affect the cm7 installation. But im guessing it should not and only affects ability to flash the rom.
Thanks again all. And for bearing with my ignorance!
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Well i just checked, and 2.5.1.2 still turns on the phone when charging while powered off.
I've looked around but can't find it, is there a flashable stock recovery for the MT4G somewhere? I know there's an image posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843289 but this one isn't flashable. But i guess i could still manage if there isn't one out there.
Thanks again everyone.
use the oemrecovery file found on page 118 of the cm6 thread. It was posted by phateless. Sorry I would link it but the xda app doesn't let you do that.

[Q] Need help getting back to stock, please...

Hi everyone,
I have a friend who owns a mytouch 4g and he did root the device using instructions on the forum, visionary and then terminal emulator...
Everything was working great.
Then he did something stupid which is follow a youtube video on how to overclock but he ignored the fact that this procedure required running a custom rom on your phone.
This is the youtube link he followed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amEwtRSH5ZQ
Now when attempting to turn his phone on it shows Mytouch 4G splash screen then reboots and it keeps doing the same thing over and over
I have a Samsung Vibrant and if something goes wrong I can always use Odin and place the phone in Download mode to bring it back to stock...
Is there such a procedure for the mytouch 4g and can someone provide step by step or point me in the right direction please or is there any other way to get this phone to boot up normally, or revert back to stock?!
I tried searching the forum but it seems to me that everything required the phone being able to boot up normally...
Thank you.
Have you tried taking the battery out for 30 seconds, i have a htc hd2 and how i get back to factory settings on my phone i turn the phone off and it comes back to wnd 2.6. I hope this helps
Isn't hd2 windows mobile?!

Load the PD15IMG on the sdacard and boot into HBoot for a 100% stock restore. Links can be found in the development section. Or flash a new ROM that will replace the kernel. Did he do a nandroid backup?

After it was done it asked if I want to run the update, didn't know what to select so I hit yes, and it seemed to do the same thing all over again but this time after the initial progress bar it actually said updating unzipping and whatever not in like 7 or 8 different steps and then it said press power to reboot.
Did this step revert to stock recovery or is the cwm recovery still intact somewhere?! How would I verify?!

Help doing a nandroid backup

My first post and im sure i missed it somewhere. Ive spent the past 2 hours reading and searching for some help. I want to do nandroid back up. EXACTLY how do igo about it?
I justgot myG2 a week ago. A day ago i perm rooted it and then overclocked.
I came from a back flip that i rooted and installed j_rodds recovery and rom.
Do i need to do the same custom recovery like j_rodds?
Use rom manager and click "flash clockworknod"
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
Yea. After you flash clockwork. You can either backup while in rom manger or when your phone is off hold vol down+power then go to recovery. There should be an option backup/restore. Lol note use the track pad to navigate
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Once you flash ClockworkMod recovery using ROM Manager, you can also perform the nandroid through ROM Manager, as well. I prefer this because it gives you an opportunity to rename the backup before you create it (instead of getting a seemingly random number sequence). I.e. you could have 'CM7-Feb20' instead of '032301-110235003'
Think of ROM Manager as a GUI for recovery.

True, but if you have more than about 3, it gets a bit confusing. Much easier if they're appropriately named.
When I try this by powering off the phone and restarting with holding down the volume key. Then going into recovery. I get a triangle with a red exclamation point.
Need to flash clockwork in rom manger

Open rom manager, the very top option is to flash clockworkmod recovery. Do that.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I have followed everyones instructions. But I still get the triangle with red exclamation when I try to get into recovery at boot.
DL ROM manager from app store, install ROM manager, open ROM manager, press "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"(should be first thing at the top), confirm phone model.
Either reboot into recovery, or scroll down to backup, and proceed to do so.

Have followed this as well. When I try to boot into recovery I get the triangle with red exclamation.
I have done all the suggestions as listed above. I have noticed when i boot by holding down the volume and power, At the top of screen it still says s-on.
Shouldnt it be S-off with root?
Im over clocked with set cpu, have superuser permission app and terminal emulator show su, and titanium backup shows root. So have i missed something and that would explain why i cant get into recovery?
HELP????

Getting root and s-off from my understanding are 2 different things. Root is its own thing and s-off lets you falsh custom roms..... try going into rom manager and clicking flash clockworkmod.....do it like 2 times. You should be fine

[Q] What step am I missing CWM

Hey guys.
Sooooo sorry if i am missing something obvious.. Im trying to do a backup after a fresh rooted .605 from Tom Tools thread.
Rooted fine. (see superuser)
Downloaded Rom Manager
Clicked Flash Clockworkmod Recovery
Chose Droid X
Said it did
Reboot into recovery just boots back to the OS.
Is there something between here and there I need to do?
just downloaded bootstrapper for droidx....now it boots to a black screen.

ok thanks. got that , got into recovery... now the camera button doesnt (or any other button) select an option. i can just toggle up and down using vol keys
looks like my camera button is broken and I just called to find out my warranty expires in 6 days! I'm not usually a lucky person so that is pretty lucky for me
Will revisit this with the new phone
ok so this might have to be a new thread but.
I unrooted since it will be going back on Monday.
I need to get rid of SU and from what i read i have to sbf or use maderstcok - OTA 2.3.340 update.zip
Both guides NEED the camera button......
Is there another way?
