[Q] switching between android roms

I did search. honestly. so im pretty sure that many people are annoyed when they see a new version of their current rom show, thus having to upgrade again loosing all their setting, apps, etc. personally, i've tried using titanium backup from mdeejay's rEVOlution 2.0 to 2.2 but it said that my apps could not be restored. so what would be the best way to painlessly switch android roms? sorry if a similar thread exists, but i'm pretty sure it doesn't..

(but i'm in a good mood) so...
3. ...here is my answer:
a) Data.img:
you can copy your old Data.img file into the new rom (Android-Folder) before
booting it. But use with caution, maybe the settings in the data.img are
incompatible with your new rom. (in that case - delete it and use the orig. data.img)
b) Titanium Backup:
- be sure that your Backup is the made with the same TB Version like the
one you trying to restore with.
(restoring from V 2.x.x to V 3.x.x does not work for me.)
- Use the Busy-Box offered by TB (Problems?-button) to prevent error's
- And be careful with restoring the settings! Maybe they are not compatible!
4. I suggest to rename the old rom folder to "Android_old" and
leaving it on the SD-Card for a while.
In case of problems you can rename your folders "Android">"Android_new"
and "Android_old">"Android". So you have the Option to play around with
Backup-settings and creating new one's.

first of all, thanks for the promt response. and secondly, i've already tried everything you've mentioned! when i used my old data.img, android booted normally. however, i had none of my apps, nor my settings. and i double checked my titanium version. it's the same as the one in the new rom. oh, and i started this thread because none of the given solutions would solve my silly little problem....

This sound's more like a problem with the revolution-build.
I don't had a problem like this with other Mdeejay-builds
(never testet revolution) and Mattc-builds
My data.img from a desire-build had worked in desire-hd-build.
But i'd switched back to the original Data.img to prevent possible failure.
Normally moving app's with TB works fine, settings are more
problematic.
But you have a very special problem.

You don't have to restore the app with tb, maybe try downloading the apps then restoring the data separately

You cant realy save anything but your apps. The builds can be different enough between versions that a clean install is the only way to guarantee that you have success. I keep Titanium back up apk on my card and the folder it makes as well. I dont loose my apps and only use it to back up and restore apps. You need to re-do all other settings as they can carry issues from one build to another. Some things will back up, others wont, its part of the trade off. When you change builds, most of the time its so different, its like changing phones, you just cant transfer everything.

Perfectly Clone one Vibrant to another vibrant

I have a Vibrant with fusion 1.1 that is going back to T-mobile. Is there a way to just clone everything on this phone to the new phone.
Can I just copy Titanium backup form the old phone and put it on the sd card of the new one. Is there a better method?

You need to flash back to stock using odin, just go to the development section and click om the.sticky, under odin roms. Click the.stock one and flash,

That wasn't his question... Like at all...
I'd do a nandroid and back up the apps and data in titanium and save them to the SD and then put that SD in the new phone that comes.

What would happen if I copied all the contents of the internal memory (all files ,all folders) then copied those over the contents of the new phones internal memory?. Nandroid and TB are not normally saved to the external SD card.
Or should I just load the new rom on the new phone and just copy the TB folder to the new phone and restore from that?

Nandroid and titanium are a good start but neither of those will do things like modem files.
So I would add on the new phone do a base install of fusion 1.1 with the appropriate kernel, i think you said was your rom, then a nandroid restore and that should get you there

I'll chime in with my opinion. Granted my opinion comes from my experiences constantly experimenting with different roms. I've flashed the phone this month almost as often as I've received actual phone calls for crying out loud!
The amount of time expended on looking for such a perfect method seems to be greater than the amount of time spent merely reconstructing an equivalent environment.
Keeping all of my contacts on google and using appbrain to have the ability to keep a known inventory of apps...I can reconstruct my daily driver environment from one rom to another in about 30 minutes max without the need to explicitly backup anything.
Though this may not work for everyone, it surely would work for most. Just a thought...

Using AppBrain would mean you would have to constantly re-download your apps. Also, this does not save the settings and what about apps that are not on the market?
I use Titanium Backup if I want to transfer all my apps and settings. Nandroid would be very appropriate to transfer over all the of phone's data, granted you also manually include the correct modem and kernel.
Doing a Titanium Restore surely takes less time then redownloading and installing from the market, especially if you have the Pro version as it is MUCH MUCH quicker.

Titanium can save some time, but honestly not enough to write home about, at least for me. It's a matter of a few minutes different in my experience.
The reason why I do not use Titanium, despite the fact that it can save some time is that it can lead to complications especially when bouncing between 2.1 and 2.2 derivative roms, depending on what you back up of course. I'll use it when I'm staying within the domain of 2.1...or staying within the domain of 2.2. Crossing those domains however I never use Titanium. I've had more problems than not, and admittedly that may be due to my ignorance of what things are truly safe to restore across different versions of Android.
Then again I'm probably unusual compared to the OP, in that I experiment with EVERYTHING, up to and including a little bit of my own firmware cooking after the fact. Every firmware and experimental firmware and filesystem hack has at some point been on this phone, but that's how I roll.
Doing without deliberate backups hasn't drastically changed my restore times. Setting up the few apps that require setup takes a matter of seconds when I decide to use that app.

It's nice to get a fresh install - just TB and and reinstall after!

if you want exact - nandroid
otherwise use TitaniumBackup Pro

This is what I would do. I would perform a nandroid. After doing so I would then copy everything in the internal sd to your computer. When the new phone comes. Copy everything into the new phone's internal sd. Root your phone, install clockwork mod. Flash a new rom if you want if not no biggy. Load up into clockwork mod, do an advanced restore, restore data only. Reboot. Reboot again. Load back into clockwork mod, clear cache and dalvik. Reboot twice. Run fix permissions. Reboot. Everything should work with no errors and it will look identical to your last vibrant. You could condense this but I wrote it so that you could install buncha diff roms without having to do titanium restore because that just takes a ****ing long time if you have a **** load of apps installed.

Question - wont restoring data from a nandroid after installing a new ROM cause the rom to act funny since the old data may not agree with it or overwrite something?

Things that I want to know before I change to CM7

Hi guys, I'm a stock rom user and I've getting bored of my current screen. It looks like stock rom has less themes. And after I've go thru the theme's topic in this forum, CM7 has really attracted me with it's beautiful theme. I would like to change to CM7 and I have few question to ask before I'd really change it =)
- I heard that CM has a bug of, showing all the contacts in numbers instead of name. Is this true? Or has it fixed? Can someone list me the bugs of CM?
- Is it available to use the market app that I'm using now? If i used Mybackup to backup my phone, after I have turn it into CM, can I download back the Mybackup and then restore my things?
- What are the other features can be found on CM7? Can it overclock too?
Please provide me other relavent infos that I need to know before I turning my wildfire into CM7.

OK to answer your question about bugs. I'm on the RC1 and haven't found any! Everything works perfectly! If you find anything let them know and it might be fixed in a nightly.
Yes you can download mybackup and then restore all your apps! I use titanium backup as it has more features but mybackup works just as well.
Other features: Loads!!! Basically everything is configurable!
When you asked if it can overclock, all ROMS can be overclocked, however you must first install an overclock kernal like HCDR.Jacob 4.1 which I use.

Things to know about before changing is that you CAN'T get any HTC apps on it, and that's really it!

Also CM doesn't have an FM radio. Don't know if Jacob will add it in the future.

titanium backups can backup contacts also? i dont mind about apps, the most important thing for me is my contacts. i couldnt afford to lose any of it.

Yeah, you can't install HTC apps like the HTC Camera or the HTC FM radio or the sense launcher. No titanium backup doesn't do contacts but when I created contacts I created them on google so I just log in and they're downloaded straight away.
RC1 is the best version of CM7 at the moment in terms of things working.
Answering your question to @IMLGL by radio they mean the FM radio, it will NOT work in CM7 but you can download apps that let you stream it so it's not much of a problem!
Are you rooted? I can guide you to it if you need it or I can go straight to CM7!
I'm sure you'll like CM7!

Ummm Titanium Backup does do contacts. And SMS, and Calendar, etc, but it probably wont work as its moving from HTC to AOSP ROM.
Cyanogenmod.com has a wiki that details the install process, and also their own forum.
I have found a few bugs, mostly minor though and safely ignored. One that comes to mind is that when trackball centre is assigned to screen-on, it sometimes does nothing. CM7 is freakin' awesome, and so fast. Gameboid runs full speed when holding down screen unlike other rom's. And gingerbread is such an improvement! I especially love the customization in the Notifications button widget... best access to music controls when in another app!
Edit: just do a nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM. If the new one doesn't work out, restore nandroid and no harm done

Could you elaborate on that? I.e. how you overcame it, and what you did wrong? It's not very nice trying to scare people for no reason. I have never had a nandroid restore cause a bootloop.

Hahaha i'm not trying to scare them, it just happened. I don't know why :S, after formatting my sd card, repartitioning it and putting everything back, it was all fine. it happened when i tried to upgrade wildpuzzle, LOL.

Well yes, you should always format the swap partition (if you have one) and also do a full wipe/factory reset to erase the .android_secure folder before restoring from a nandroid backup (all under Clockworkmod). Recovery is known to be quite buggy on the Wildfire, though it's mainly with the ADB server.

It was a rare occurrence, only happened like once or twice. But it really doesn't bother me since i'm used to flashing and restoring apps with titanium backup only takes like 20-30min. (i don't have over 100 billion apps i want) ;D

I can't tell you what apps you'll like or find useful! But I like overclock widget for overclocking and LCD density is quite cool!

I have bought MyBackup Pro, I may try it. I had a problem with TB, I backed up everything in CM7 and reinstalled fresh, but it does not restore Widgets for ADWLauncher properly
Nandroid is very different to MyBackup/TB. It takes a complete 1:1 image of your phone. Yes it does do contacts, but you cannot restore those contacts individually - you use nandroid as a complete ROM restore. Before you edit your firmware, Nandroid is used as a backup incase you want to revert. It has no use for migrating across rom's, but is the best and only way for an exact entire backup.

actually i've found the best way to backup contacts!
just go into the phone/contacts there, press menu, export to sd card and thats done! done perfectly!
and for notes backup, i suggest you all to use OnePunchNotes. It can backup either automatically or manually, then restore it even with password. This is the best notes app that I've found so far.
for the apps i dont really care i can download it again =).
Im in CM7 now, the GUI is awesome!!!!!!! makes my phone so fresh
but just one problem, sometimes the apps will get force closed and hang, anyone knows why?
p/s: the kernal for overclock is same as stock rom? what what jacob?

Force close AND hang? They are both completely different things. Which one is it? I get no FC's, if you do try a permissions repair in ROM manager.
If you mean hanging, yes I get this too but only within first few minutes of booting up. Just press Wait and let it finish, pressing Close will make it take even longer to load. Remember that this is RC, it is still in testing stages, so there's nothing you can do except wait for a new version.
Yes, Jacob's HDCR kernel is already in CM7. It is probably best to stick with it too instead of flashing the generic one.
Under performance settings, using a 32mb heap and enabling JIT may help with hanging. Also, switching off dithering definitely helps reduce hanging. It also seems to make my emulators faster

I don't know for sure cause I don't have a Wildfire myself, but in cm7 you can change the CPU speed in Settings - CyanogenMod settings - Performance - CPU settings

[Q] Noob questions galore ;)

First of all (in case you didn't realize it), I'm an android noob. This is my first Android phone (my employer tried to give me an iPhone, but caved when I told them I'd just stick it in my drawer and save it as an emergency phone) and I just rooted it
Now...I made a backup of it after rooting. This should get me back to stock if I need it, right? Should I copy it off the phone? I guess it will be removed if I have to wipe...?...
Also; will I retain my settings, sms/mms etc etc if I use a custom ROM? This is my main concern at the moment, as I want something more fancy and hopefully less energy consuming ROM.

Hi there!
if you made the backup just after rooting, if you run that Backup (through CWM etc) it will revert the phone back to how it was at the time of the backup, so if you didnt have any settings,sms,Apps etc they will not show. you can copy the backup file if you wish to but i believe (not 100%) the backups are stored on External SD and as a result are not lost on a Factory Reset/Wipe
Some Custom ROMS (Litening ROM i use) allow you to flash with no loss of data, including all your apps, SMS and settings. Basically you have the exact same phone layout but with a Spiffy,fast,Fresh rom they are really easy to flash with ODIN, now im not sure if other Roms (Villain, Cognition, etc) retain the Data partition on flashing you would need to check out the specific Threads on the Android Development section of the forum

Do you know if any of the SGS2 ROMs have more themes available? I get bored easily, and it would be great to change the look and feel every now and then

well being that the phone is still relatively new and still not available for the North American market, the development for it is still small. However, the CM7 team are developing roms for it, and a lot of other custom roms are based off CM7, so there should be a good selection of roms in the near future. the sgs2 is one of, if not the most anticipated android device this year, so i'm sure rom selection wouldn't be a problem.

Whenever i do anything such as update/change my ROM, i do a Ti backup of all my apps (incase they go missing) then a CWM backup of my System which i can roll back to if i have any problems
Also, just to 2nd what p00kienrayray Said, the only ROMS i know of which support themes are MIUI and CM7 which should hopefully work fully soon

Yes, there *definitely is* a recommendation, when making a backup before trying a rom which wipes your phone, check out the message I sent to TB developer..
"Hi, I bought titanium few days ago to help the transition from my Magic to the new Galaxy S2. I used to use My backup Pro but appreciated the apps freezing function of Titanium that could possibly help avoid the battery drain problem on the S2 due to the Samsung WiFi sharing bug.
I had quite a bad experience, though, regarding a hard reset I had to perform on the phone, which I previously backed up with Titanium: the default backup directory is /mnt/sdcard but that corresponds to the internal memory on the S2, while the external one is located in /mnt/sdcard/external_sd (if I am not wrong). That led to losing a week worth of photos (the one part I couldn't really get back, given that I had a week old backup made with SMS Backup & Restore + Call Log backup & Restore made on the Magic).
Ok, lesson learnt for me but may I suggest that the default directory can be automatically set to /mnt/sdcard/external_sd if the terminal is an S2, for future users not to be unsatisfied? Is it something that could be implemented in TB?

CONFIGURE YOUR TB BACKUP DIR TO /mnt/sdcard/external_sd BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE
Not to mention that some apps like SMS Backup & Restore do not allow you to change the dir, therefore you have to manually move the backup results after you have finished

[Q]TWRP Backup Questions

Rooted 6.2.2, TWRP installed. I ran backup of the stock ROM, before I install a different ROM like CM7 or the ICS that is being developed do I need to copy that backup off the Fire? After the new ROM has been flashed, does that backup stay on the Fire or does the flashing process wipe it out?
Also, after restoring that backup......am I completely at the point when I took the backup? Data, apps, etc should be just as they were when I took the backup?

The backup image is stored in TWRD directory with the data and time name. Rename it as your stock Tom for future use.
The contents of the backup as a defualt has ROM and your application if you did not change parameters

Just remind you that I have got a weird issue that some of my games does show their icons and when I type to them it says something like "Cannot load, restart Go Launcher" ( I use Go Launcher). I found no way to restart my launcher so that I just reinstall them and it's fine.

The backups go to /sdcard/TWRP/backups/...
Unless you wipe your SDCARD they should not be touched.
You can always, copy them onto your computer if you want... which would be useful if you had to like replace the hardware and wanted to restore it onto the new hardware.
Also, after restoring that backup......am I completely at the point when I took the backup? Data, apps, etc should be just as they were when I took the backup?

Just like an image taken on a computer, when I restore it, I would want to be at the exact point where the image was taken. System, apps, data, etc.

the answer to ontwowheels question isn't truly answered yet. Like him, i'm rooted, with TWRP, and trying things out. i'd very much like to try MIUI but its not clear if i can completely revert back to stock Kindle [admittedly there are several conveniences i like about but unfortunately it aint a-la-carte unless i foolishly dive in making my own ROM!]. Can someone please provide some guidance as to what must be backed up to restore stock kindle again, just as i left it [settings, preferences, apps, registration with amazon and market, etc] or if that's even possible, or what won't be restored. i'm not a developer and i hesitate to go with trial and error

the answer to ontwowheels question isn't truly answered yet. Like him, i'm rooted, with TWRP, and trying things out. i'd very much like to try MIUI but its not clear if i can completely revert back to stock Kindle [admittedly there are several conveniences i like about but unfortunately it aint a-la-carte unless i foolishly dive in making my own ROM!]. Can someone please provide some guidance as to what must be backed up to restore stock kindle again, just as i left it [settings, preferences, apps, registration with amazon and market, etc] or if that's even possible, or what won't be restored. i'm not a developer and i hesitate to go with trial and error

To restore stock just use TWRP to flash the update.zip found on amazon. Once you download it, you will have to rename it to whatever.ZIP instead or whatever.BIN. Once that's done, go to settings on the stock ROM and hit device, then factory reset and you should be good to go
