Missing Enter key on Fire soft keyboard - Kindle Fire General

I think Amazon really blew it by forgetting to include an Enter key on the Kindle Fire's soft keyboard. Many apps require it and by bastardizing the standard Android keyboard sets, Amazon is shooting itself in the foot, as this reduces the number of Android apps that can run on the Fire.

I know I quickly replaced it with Swype but doesn't the one key, lower right bottom row one in from end, change to a check mark and behave like the enter key? It will say search when you're on a search field but still behaves like the enter when you're in search fields. Or am I completely mid-remembering?

Thats the behavior I have witnessed, bsoplinger.

i even downloaded/installed alternative keyboard but i dont understand how to enable it so i can actually use it...

Enter changes with the environment. In market I think it says search, others say go.

Spen not working correctly? Screen sensivity at fault?

hello there mates!
Just got my tablet and I'd like to ask you guys something )
Is it normal that you have to press really hard onto the tablet?
the tablet wouldn't even recognize an input when i drop the pen from about 1cm onto the tab.
Is that normal? I doubt it. I activated the dot when hovering on the screen and that works great...am I missing some essential settings?
In addition...why is there no possibility to write with handwriting-to-text when creating a post on xda(writing anything)? Isn't the pen exactly made for this?
Sincerely yours
Sent from my GT-N8010 using xda app-developers app
Try removing the the pen nib and putting it back in. Or use one of the spare nibs. if it doesn't get better you may need to replace the stylus entirely . try some test apps like Markers and see what happens. I found the S pen requires more pressure in system use ( i.e. clicking on the home icon) than in app use.
Finally If you can visit a store which demos the Galaxy Note phone try that stylus on your tablet and see what happens.
Look in the 'tips and tricks' thread, there is a great video from hasc on writing to text which works for all input.
Yeah the default Samsung keyboard has handwriting recog built in. On mine its a button on the bottom left that looks like T/ except the slash is a pencil

Also, the screen sensitivity probably has nothing to do with it since the spen relies on a separate principle alltogether to register the touch. It seems as though the nib presses back on a button that registers how far you press it, so if the button is a little stiff on y8urs (it is on mine) well then get used to it.. its not that bad.

Amazon Soft Key Bar Replacement + Recent Apps

Warning dont do this if you dont know what your doing or how to fix it if something goes wrong, and dont blame me for any Problems that happen to your kindle trying to use this method.
I tested and used this only on the 8.9 Kindle Fire HD and dont know what it will do on a 7, but since the forums are lacking forums for 8.9 (Where is the 8.9 Love?) I guess this is the next best place as it may work for the 7 also but my settings I recommend are for the 8.9 and probably not great for the 7.
I was looking for a way to get rid of the soft key bar that takes up screen space and is just another thing that I disslike about the stock Amazon Interface. I have not found a perfect replacement but I have found one that is pretty decent it is the LMT Launcher(required root) Other then a few visual glitches, like a gap on the right during the notification bar down, and a bar on the right when using key board.
Directions:
1.Download apk from post below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150
2.Install apk in ES File explorer or whatever file program you use.
3. Download and install MoreRecent, if you want recent apps (since Kindle Fire HD is sorely lacking this)
morerecent Play store download link..
4. Run LMT app, Tap start/stop TouchService once, and set Autostart Touchservice enable
5. Setup Pie Control near the bottom of the Settings
Recommended settings by me:
Activation area position left and right
Activation area Thickness 5
Activation area Length 600
Long press time 1000
Animation time 0
Show status infos Disabled
6. Setup Pie Items
Recommended settings by me:
Level 1 for the pie Give you acress to search menu and recent apps using morerecent app, plus a way to kill all apps and go to home. This leaves all 4 of the long press items available for common used apps or anything you want!!
Pie item 1 App select MoreRecent
Pie Item 2 KillAllApps (will close active and go to Home screen) (or replace with your most used app)
pie Item 3 Menu
pie item 4 Search
Level 2 for the Pie Make so swipe downward from left or right will go back, and swipe upward will go back home.
Pie item 1 Home
Pie Item 2 Back
7. Test that it works well and does everything you like and i recommend to restart to make sure it starts up. Testing your most used apps is a good idea to make sure that you can just use the LMT and dont need the amazon Soft Key Bar
8. If everything is working great and their isnt any time that you wish need the amazon bar Load Titanium backup and back up Soft Key Bar then uninstall it, now restart and it should be gone once LMT loads you should have a more clean and easy to use replacement for the the amazon key bar! With alot more settings you can play with!
Let me know how this works for you!!
Yes, I am using LMT on my KFHD 7. I can confirm this works. Also, I forgot who made this, but I DID NOT, if you just add a line in build.prop in the system folder that says "qemu.hw.mainkeys=1" and reboot, you kindle will get rid of the Amazon softkey bar.

I dont know for sure but I belive the app switcher is part of some system files, and I guess that amazon butchered those files..... Using Nova and running recent apps it will change the wall paper (very annoying) So I was forced to try to find another way to change and so far best option i can find is MoreRecent (GB style with more icons) But its kinda ugly with very large icons but at lest it works decently. Would be great if someone could get the stock ICS recent apps to work! (altho I would rather the devs work on a fully working version of cm 10.1).

miztah1999z,
This is slightly off, VERY Close!
What you want to do, is use ES File Explorer or Root Explorer with Superuser Permissions:
Step 1: Using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer navigate to /system/ find build.prop - click on it and choose Text Editor.
Step 2: Scroll Down and find qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 it is about one half the way down the list below ro.sf.lcd.density=240 - Change the 0 to a 1. DO NOT add a second entry! When done the line should look like this:
Code:
ro.sf.lcd.density=240
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
ro.opengles.version=131072
Step 3: Reboot the Kindle
This is a well known edit, this tells Android to NOT display the Qemu Soft-key bar. We edit the soft-key bar all the time, changing the icons and the look of the bar. It is quite easy, you would use ADB to Pull /system/framework-res.apk then use apktools to decompile the apk. Once you decompile the APK you will find inside that one APK is all the Nav Bar icons, you can use a solid Graphics editor like Gimp to edit the icons and a solid XML Editor like IntellaJ IDEA to edit the icon functions. If you do not have an solid understanding of XML DO NOT attempt this edit, instead ask us to create a custom bar for your Kindle. If we get enough requests we will add the custom bars to our software.
We may be adding a few optional nav bars in our software next month. At the moment we are adding the Sony Xloud and Bravia options to the Settings menu so you are able to properly change the Sony Xloud and Bravia settings. Once we are done with the Sony project we will ask all of what YOU would like to have as an option. If you have any ideas please post them.

Okay, I found it, LMT. Now why did I think it was part of MX launcher? Any way to keep it from disappearing the moment you take your stylus/finger/tentacle off it? If I wanted to play peek-a-boo, I got a friend with a 9 month old who's a champ at that.

Secondly, disabling the soft keys in this manner seems to effect the functionality of some apps, for example you loose the access to the settings menu in gplay, meaning you can't access the my apps menu. Wich Is something I like to use.
However. Moving the soft keys app out of system/app has its own negative effect of causing a gap when you pull down the notications and the bottom of the screen. Right now my keyboard is also floating the same distance, its as if its leaving the gap for the softkeys
Any ideas how to fix this while keeping access to the settings menu of gplay?

Which gplay exactly, and what where you doing?
I have made a few adjustments to how I have my Pie setup so level 1 pie has menu button(settings), Killallapps, Morerecent, and search, and home and back on the second pie level, so far my favorite setup as it leaves all the pies long press free to put in apps I use often. but the 2 buttons I use most home and back, are still a quick swipe away to be used. About the visual glitches in the keyboard and notifications That is above my ability, and so far its only visual so it doesn't bother me much.
I use button savior, which has a built-in app switch feature. Only 6 most recent apps are listed but is enough for me.

I have mine set up with qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 and I have no problems with any apps. Perhaps it's because I also have set my dpi to 180. Lemme change some things and see if it affects gplay. I'll get back to this thread in a few.
So, the picture without the options is with the dpi set at 240. The next picture is with the settings @ 180 dpi. Both are with qemu.hw.mainkeys=1.
Hope this helps. If you need help changing your dpi, let me know.

[Q] Some very simple questions!

Hi
Got my £29 Nook ST delivered on Friday to complement my Kindle Keyboard 3G which we use a lot.
Originally I intended to use the Nook in its vanilla flavour, but having read that rooting was possible and the Kindle app worked, thought I'd keep all of my reading in the same place by installing the Kindle app.
So far I've done the following:-
- rooted successfully (NST 1.2.1)
- installed Gapps successfully
- installed the Kindle app by browsing play.google.com and "pushing" it to the NST
- sync'd up my books and read a few on the Nook.
I'm no programmer, but I have rooted both of my other Android devices, as well as installed custom roms and kernels on my phone, so in general things going sweetly and as expected.
There are a couple of simple questions I'd like to post though which will help me (and perhaps others) speed through the process of getting the device into a truly workable format
1) I installed the Kindle App via the play store - thus this is the latest version I suppose. Is there a "better" older version for using on the NST which will bring any benefits?
2) If I choose one of the launches (stock or ReLaunch) as the default, will I lose the ability to get back to the menus?
3) Is there a list of what the various button mapping options from Nook Touch Mod mean? They don't appear to make much sense, though I have successfully modified the page ups and page downs to be volume up and down, which works OK with the Kindle reading app
4) Do I need to have an SD card permanently in the NST for storage, or is that not necessary for books?
5) If all I want to do on the NST is either read books using the Kindle app or read books using the NST's core functionality, is there a neat and tidy way of hiding the ReLaunch launcher etc? Its all usable to me, but I could see my family getting a little stuck when using it, certainly compared to the simplicity of using the stock app or using my Kindle Keyboard
6) Some of the rendering of the font from the Kindle app looks a little less than precise. What can I do to improve this?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Not that I know of. Ask questions on specific options. You can use the Tap Left and Tap Right instead of Volume up/down so that the hardware page up/down buttons work for both the stock NST reader and the Kindle app.

Use NTMM to map your n button long press to ReLaunch. Then when you short press the n button and the B&N quicknav comes up tap on Home then click on the use as default checkbox and select Home. Now your NST looks like stock unless you long press the n button to get into ReLaunch. You could also remap one of the quicknav buttons to Kindle if others want to use Kindle without going through Relaunch.

By the stock launcher you mean Home I assume. In any case use NTMM to assign a hardware button to whatever you don't want to be the default launcher and set what you do as the default launcher. I described how to make Home the default and still have access to ReLaunch in my previous post answering another of your questions. I'd recommend always assigning ReLaunch to some hardware button just in case you accidentally make something else the default you can get back to ReLaunch to fix things.

If you check the box to use the launcher as default before selecting the launcher then it will persist across power cycles. That's how it works for me and there are a few threads here about people who have selected a default and can't get back to ReLaunch having to factory restore and reroot.

How to close Amazon FireTv system on-screen keyboard using K400R.

Today I noticed that when you try to go to forums and type in your user name and password, you can only type in one field. Its pretty annoying... So today I was just pressing buttons trying to back out of the on screen keyboard and sure enough.
On the Logitech K400r, you need to hit the blue Fn button and F7. That will drop the on-screen keyboard away thus allowing you to type in your password after your user name, click on other on-screen fields etc.
Hopefully this will help someone else, as that on-screen keyboard is an eye sore...
If it helped, hit Thanks!
I have same as what you have been encountered the annoyed on-screen keyboard.
Im using Logitech k700 (I think) with trackpad built-in.
I haven't tried use null keyboard
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wparam.nullkeyboard
Problem is that Amazon fire tv doesn't have input selection and it may be will not working with the null keyboard.
yeah I did see it, but I also heard that it can break the other keyboards... The F6 trick works great! I also just installed Tapatalk and that makes my forums come thru perfect. Im using my K400r now, typing through the Amazon FTv on-screen keyboarrd seemlessly...
Has anyone found a way to do this without one of these keyboards? That pop up keyboard makes me want to throw my fire tv through the window. If there is a way to get to the full android settings, I'm sure it could be done.
There is a settings.apk that can be sideloaded, but I don't know if you can install null keyboard without root since the unknown sources issue in tween updated users.
If you are stuck without root on the latest of firmwares, you can install apk files from unknown sources without root since Amazon nicely enabled it,but I still don't know if null keyboard will install.
I'm rooted, but I hadn't heard of the settings apk. I'll have to look that up. I know on another android device there is a built in option to hide the on screen keyboard when an external keyboard is plugged in.
Here is one of the topics.
I hope the file is still available after all this time.
