I took advantage of Amazon's 1 cent deal on a new Rezound, so I got the joy of a new phone. However, my little Nexus has been an awesome phone, and I just couldn't stand to part with it or let it gather dust in the corner, so I had to find a new task for it. I updated to CM7.1 (finally) and have made it my new portable media device. So far it's great! Battery life is absolutely fantastic without all the radios on. I think my iPod touch is going to my wife.
Just wanted to share my story of keeping a great device around.
Rezound looks like a solid beast, nice one!...Can't beat $0.01 for it either!
I've been soured by the whole left-hand-doesn't-know-what-the-right-hand-is-doing going on with the Galaxy Nexus. So I'm waiting on the Galaxy Note or maybe even the Tegra-3 will be making a showing soon!
Especially with the promise of ICS coming to the N1 (via CyanogenMod), I don't mind at all continuing to use my N1 as my primary!
I was thinking of making mine into the remote for our TV/stereo system. Along with the desk dock I'm thinking it would work well.
Still cannot find a new phone to replace N1. Most of the new phones are completely plastic. New htc phones are okay but still cannot beat N1 in terms of build quality and design maturity.
I guess I still need to use it for a while.
Such a simple and obvious use for the phone once its retired....and I didn't even think about it.
Thanks for posting this, I think I'll do the same exact thing whenever I finally buy a new phone.
Question. Do you just turn it on airplane mode or something?

yes i think with radios turned off means in airplane mode.its saves your battery life almost doubles it
Yes I leave it in airplane mode. I do turn on WiFi sometimes, though. With the radios off, the battery life is just stunning! I have been using it since Wednesday without charging. A couple hours of music a day and some video even.

Personally I have been testing ASOP alphas of ICS on my N1 if you have the time and patience it is quite fun!
I was planning on waiting for some of the cm9 roms to start testing ICS. How has performance been with AOSP?
I'm also waiting for my parents to upgrade so I can claim their Dincs for some more toys to play with.

Somehow this thread sickens me...
This phone is not two years old and it is really fine.
It has the multitouch problem but except for google maps turning around I never run into it. And I almost never use that function in maps.
The thing that bugged me out was the touch problem, where you hit somewhere on the screen and it detects it somewhere far off the screen.
A supposed hardware problem till the last update which seems to have solved that too.
So I can't complain about anything.
Except maybe about the low phone space which hit me really hard for the last months, but I could fix that problem with the help of this forum (after rooting and being able to move apps to the sd-card).
So to sum it up this has and is still a really nice full smartphone.
And you want to degrade it to a remote control for your TV?
Just because the other newer phone has one two three more cores that you would probably never use anyhow. Because it has 5 more pixels in the screen when you could not even really see all the details that the N1 screen offers.
Do you know there are people starving in other parts of the world?
Do you know each phone supports wars in Africa?
I am not telling you to keep your phone until it fells apart as I will do.
But you may really sleep over this one other night...
I mean really, what next? Throw away a smartphone when the battery drains empty?
I upgraded to the Sensation not too long ago and have been using my N1 as a PMP device also (and occasionally messing around with the ICS alphas) and I was wondering if their were any ROMs for this device with more of a media focus? Im a CM junkie so I really dont even know whats out there. any tips?
If the rest of us want to upgrade to a new phone, what business of yours is it what we do with it? I was pointing out a use for my device after I got a new phone. My reason for getting a new Rezound had nothing to do with the Nexus One and everything to do with my belief that T-Mobile is doomed. I wanted a different service, but I love the Nexus and wanted to find a good use for it.

I lived in Africa, and my son is adopted from there, so yes, thanks, I know what it's like.
Just because people in the world are lacking, doesn't mean we should all live that way too. I don't have a problem with treating myself to things that make me happy, and I hope all people do the same. 2 years out of this phone is pretty good, if I have the means to upgrade, what's the problem? I don't want to throw it away, and I don't want to sell it, I'd like to keep it around to play with, so what is wrong with leaving it in a TV room and using it in the mean time.
Geez man, what's your problem?

I could have sworn one of the current Sense ROMs had Beats Audio included but I just checked all three and it doesn't seem to be in there anymore.
That was going to be my suggestion.

thanks! maybe I can tear myself away from ICS long enough to check these out.
I now have a Galaxy Nexus to replace my N1 so I'll be turning it into a iPod-like device playing my music, video (since I usually don't watch 720p content) and some gaming.
I have already put MIUI on and will start loading it up with media once I get a 32GB card.
I was in the same boat. Ever since the Galaxy Nexus was announced I just wanted to get rid of nexus one since then. Although since I am on T-Mobile, I doubt I'll be getting the galaxy nexus. BUT I recently put CM9 on my nexus one and I am in love with the phone all over again lol. ICS is so awesome.

the HTC Hero is the best phone I ever owned!!!!!
Cant wait to get the EVO and LOVE it.
Might as well add to the joy. LOL +1 on EVO awesomeness. EAGERly waiting new and improved ROMs from these Devs. <33!!$#%$^[email protected]& xD
Its certainly not perfect, nothing is, but I'm very happy with it.
I'm very very very happy with my EVO. I'm CONSTANTLY showing it off on how fast it is and the features.

Yes! Showing it off to my friends all the time!
I LOVE my Evo ! ! !
LMAO!...you guys are a trip!
I also love my phone though!.....No problems here! :knocks on wood:
........cept for the freakin' 30fps issue Which i have faith in XDA, to fix it :-D
+1 here gives me better batter life than my g1 ever did now. Bluetooth, pandora, wifi, and ~ 2:20 hrs of talk time while still multitasking fast is priceless had a run at my battery for 8hrs up to 33% battery before i charged again....
Showing it off everywhere as well and people get amazed at how well it works, everyone wants a piece of it.
Will finally root it when the 30 days are over in case anything goes wrong, but so far best phone ever.
Man I got full flash, WiFi tethering, using rockplayer I can play downloaded divx and mkv files, and hdmi out to my 60" screen. I can understand ppl freaking out about the 30fps issues. But so far I see no impact on the previously mentioned
Tasks and I am pretty sure the devs will come up with a fix soon... if u want to use ur phone all day long get the 3800mah battery that also coming out soon..
Don't get brainwashed by Apple again like the rest of the iPhone owners.

had mine for a little over a week now, and think this is definitely the most powerful phone on the market at the moment. this is my first Android phone (coming from winmo 6.1), and I am truly impressed with Android and the speed of this phone. the display is incredible too...I could never go back to a small display again, and my winmo phone was 3.8 inches!
now bring on froyo!!
I may have issues, but I love this phone, i'm not leaving it for anything.
gotta get in on the Evo love-fest.. but +1 for the OP..this is by FAAARR the best phone i have owned.... and i have owned a LOT of them (including iphone, BBs and winmo).
Yes, there are "issues"... but.. unlike ANY other platform.. we wont have to wait for the manufacturer to fix them cause we have a community of BA devs that will prob take care of the issue before HTC actually admits that it IS a problem...
For those still complaining about battery... Have you had experience on any other android?? For what this phone does, battery life is on par with my MyTouch 3G and WAY WAY WAY WAY more powerful and better in anyway.. unfortunately, until google fixes the battery drain issues in ANdroid... just sit back and enjoy the amazing phone you have in your hands (buy a car charger and an extra USB cable to keep with you)..
Just my 2cents...
+1 I love mine as well...
+1 I also love my EVO...
I am very happy with the phone. Nothing is ever perfect and some people can't accept that. They bounce around from phone to phone only to finally succumb to that realization.
I eyed the Motorola X as well. But its just an EVO in sheeps clothing
I am sure by Fall I will have a new phone.
The only thing I would love to see from the CDMA world is the ability to switch on and off other phones on the same number. Kinda of like a SIM CHIP. With AT&T I had 3 phones that I could use whenever I felt like it.
When I knew I was going to be out for a while and away from a charger I would use my BB BOLD. IPHONE & HTC Desire(850mhz) when I wanted to tool around.
I just sold my Verizon Incredible and moved it to an Data Line for my Laptop with a built in Wireless Mobile Broad Band. It does offer the best coverage all around.
I just installed the Evolution v7 with Sprint VVM, Flash 10.1 and a few tweaks and won't got back to 2.1 - at least for the moment.
It's great to have a forum that has so many intelligent developers helping out the community.
+1 for the Evo, but was also blown away by the Andoird OS in general. Really sleek and intelligent under the hood. I was scared to move to it at first, and now I feel stupid for ever even hesitating...
And I also really like HTC Sense. Very well done in my book Made the migration from WinMo completely painless.
Ok, I always read posts on how people don't like thier Nexus S and are returning it. I just got my Nexus S and have placed CM7 and Trinity Kernel on it(will also be trying Nentuh kernel) and wanted to give my experience.
I love this phone. I have been through quite a few cell phones in my life and never have like any of them. This phone is finally a phone in which I am completely happy with! The battery is great for me...I'm am a pretty avid user...very addicted to using the phone. The sound quality with voodoo is jaw dropping and the screen is beautiful. Talk quality is good...and what I can definitely say is that I have experienced very little lag on this phone(fastest phone out of all my phones...and faster than my old Epic 4g). The phone is extremely fluid and I run live wall papers with launcher pro. I don't play games...but all the apps I use such as music players, on line streaming, my intensive live wallpapers like star ship....barely put a dent into the cpu usage.
The keyboard is fine with me and I have no problems with it. It feels comfortable and I never get any lag as others have stated. I text way more than talk on my phone...talking on the phone is what people did in the old days.
I wasn't sure if I would like the curve on it because that how annal I am . After having it, not only does it feel comfortable but it looks extremely cool and set's itself apart from other peoples phones aesthetically.
After reading other peoples posts on this phone, I was real skeptical before I bought this phone and was prepared to take it back even before I received it through the mail. This is a pleasant surprise.
If your reading this and trying to decide if you should buy this phone or not, do not go by other peoples complaints...just try it for yourself and decide.
My experience is the same, I love it!
I love too. And I come from Nexus One. I never thought it was this good. Pretty soon we will be dancing in a whole bunch of Roms. With the Nexus One I changed roms every week and flash my phone almost everyday. I was going between MIUI and Nightlies (that's why I flashed it every day).
None the less this phone lives up to it. If you don't like this phone you don't like Androids and I will have to ask you to change either to Verizon or AT&T and get yourself an iCrap.

Streaming music and using my headset. Sounds better than my Cowon D2 player which is saying alot.
Yeah, I don't understand all these posts with people complaining about the phone. I think the phone is amazing. Maybe I'm missing something, but the phone seems to far exceed my expectations.

I'm as annoyed by people who post "flames" or unsubstantiated or misinformed complaints about the Nexus S, however, there are legitimate complaints and legitimate bugs that require discussion and attention from users and ultimately, Google. The only way to reach them, or at least get their attention, is to get people to talk about it, recognize and corroborate that the issue exists, and to report it.
Issues like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=956947, which unfortunately has still gotten little to no recognition. Or the random custom ringtones changing, or the rebooting issue during calls, etc.; the list goes on, and many of them warrant complaints.
I'm curious to this as well I'm using voodoo and I noticed no difference. Id be more happy once they work on the front facing camera apps. I could have stuck with my g2. No skype no yahoo video calls forced to use tango.everything else works well for me.it was either this phone or the e7 which I still have my eyes on

My experience with nexus is good, aside the reboot issue and weak wifi, works fine for me. I never consider returning it (returning date is over and I live overseas ><), I have faith that those issues will go away in some update soon, hopefully.
I´m running with factory preset (rom, kernel, non rooted) and launcher pro, so maybe I can get much more from it customizing, right? Im just concerned with the risks like wiping out everything including downloaded apps... Eventhough there´s a rooting procedure that doesn´t wipe personal data, I wonder if rooting and changing to netarchy´s kernel will erase my apps...
You can always use titanium backup to restore your apps after every flash. real easy to use and is a must if you wanna flash roms. Overall I am preety happy with the nexus s, apart from having a weak wifi signal. I kinda wish the battery could last longer , kinda used to having longer battery since i am coming from iphone 4
Nexus S is by far the most stable Galaxy S phone
if i could just use a USB storage with it, then it'll be perfect
as of it's now, that's the only deficiency missing the microSD
I love this phone only thing that is bothering me is that my signal is significantly lower than it was with my Mytouch 4g, Blackberry 9780, and G2. Other than that I have no other complaints..
Just picked it up for $180 from craigslist though only bad thing was it has a scratch down the middle, but even that doesn't bother me much.
Hello XDA family,
I used to be a regular on the Captivate forum before I moved to WP7. I'm getting a little bored with the newest from Microsoft, and was thinking about moving back to the Android side of life. I've been watching the development of the atrix for quite a while and now that it's been release, I figured I'd look into it.
So, I head back to XDA to get the low down and I see a lot of mixed opinions. I know the bootloader is locked, but like the DroidX, I figured it's only a matter of time before it's cracked, right? Either way, most reviews say that the phone is fine out of the box, and the OTA takes that even further. There is some talk about the mic being jacked on some handsets causing muffled sound, MotoBlur...etc...etc...
Is this phone worth the money? I used to swap roms all the time with the captivate, but that was mainly because it needed it. File system performance, GPS, chronic shut downs, poor battery life, all plagued that device and my man DesignGears and others did their damnedest to correct that. Does this phone have straight up broken features that require the roms at the moment?
Is the screen as bad as everyone says? I'm used to the 3GS, and my last two phones had SAMOLED screens (Captivate, Focus).
I guess, I just don't want to do the ATT phone return merry-go-round again like I did with the Capy (I went through 9)...

I'd say don't get your hopes up here. I don't think the bootloader will be defeated unless there's a leak from Moto or an official way to do it from Moto.
Other than that, as a potential Atrix owner I'm interested in the answers to all your questions, too!
I came from captivate to focus to Atrix. I have all 3 laying on my desk and just wait h sim card to whichever I want to use. I find myself carrying the Atrix over 90% of the time because it just works. Never have had any of the random issues people talk about on here. I own a construction company and use my phone hard. Email in the field all day, talk 5000-6000 minutes a month and the battery lasts all day. I use a bluetooth headset so I have never noticed the muffled mic issue, however the update we just got was suppossed to correct that. I would buy another one without hesitation. When the high speed upload is turned on it will pretty much be a perfect device for me. Front camera chat works with Tango app. Gps works out of the box. Good battery and no lag.
Hope this helps with your decision.
Jack

I hit the casino, won some money, and deposited it into my bank. Tomorrow morning I'm ordering my SGS2. Within a week (I expect) I will no longer be using my N1. I'm excited and sad at the same time. My N1 has served me so well for 2 years now. I've gone through phases of being a "crackflasher", had a ton of ROMs on it (although I always went back to CM), and I use it HEAVILY. Even though it is 2 years old it still performs so well compared to newer devices. The XDA N1 community has been friendly, helpful, and full of great development. I liked my N1 so much I considered the HTC Amaze for a while because I assumed it would be similar in a lot of ways but just have better insides. Now my future is full of ODIN, download mode, and a lack of CM (as of now at least).
I'm going to repurpose my N1 to be my mp3 player and XBMC remote. Yes, it already does those things and my SGS2 will be able to as well. I just figured if I leave the 16gb card in there and use it this way will save battery on my new phone. I've done this with another old phone and phone that removing things like phone.apk, sms.apk, and other "crucial" system apps you are left with a wifi only device that has unbelievable battery life.
Anyway, sorry for all the blubbering.
I was thinking the same thing with regards to mp3 player and TiVo remote for my N1. However, I recently have been unable to fit my headphones to the jack. I'll need to google to see if there's an easy fix for that.
I'm still on the fence. I really love my N1, especially with the MeDroid CM7 rom on it. I've been looking at the SGS2 and Galaxy Nexus as possible candidates, but the plastic feel is a bit of a turn off. I'm really hoping HTC does come out with a Tegra 3 phone that has a metal body.
I'm not sure what you mean by lack of CM on SGS2, but CyanogenMod has both CM7 and CM9 for SGS2 and they are both really good
I haven't found much for the T989 variant thought and since I'm T-Mobile that's what I ordered. The international and ATT versions are getting more love.

The HTC Amaze is pretty impressive. Same specs as SGS2 but with a metal body and higher resolution screen. The screen is a little smaller though and I've read that the battery sucks but that is the story with a lot of phones anymore.
I just got an i9100 sgs2,and Oxygen 2.3.2 works great on it. So far I haven't noticed any bugs.
I think the sgs2 is a great choice, they have sold so many of them that there are quite a few roms available. The more phones sold, the more people are interested in getting new roms on the device.
About the part of removing the SMS apk etc, can you not just permanently take the sim card out if the phone and put it on flight mode?
Will that have the same effect?

Now the N1 sits on my coffee table, a remote for the media center with VOIP an added bonus.

I guess you could. To me, if the apps are gone they can't run so that is going to save battery. I removed the apps with Root Toolbox on my old MT3G Fender phone and loaded it up with free games and gave it to my son. I've got it running CM 6.1 with Zeam launcher and removed a ton of system apps. It lasts for several days on 1 charge this way.
N1 is a really good device, like a legend in HTC Android phones. I'm afraid i'm unable to get rid of it until 。。。 i don't know
won't you constantly get FCs notices on those apks that you remove?

You do on some. I used Root Toolbox to remove them because it can create a backup of the app and restore it if you need. I tried to remove just about everything that didn't seem completely necessary for my MT3G to be used as just a game device for my kiddo and encountered a couple of .apk's that caused FC's when removed. I just immediately reinstalled them, although when FC popups kept coming up every couple of seconds it wasn't easy.

Why Not Give to A dev Who really works on nexus ones
where can we find rom developers? Not guys who just want free phones and do little to nothing.
Well I guess it'd be worth around 35-40 bucks in its current state. Sell it, keep it or hell even give it to a ROM developer such as texasice.
Any good ideas on repurposing it? I'm in the same boat.
Have a contest ... I had a T-Mobile wing that I give as a prize to my fans for supporting my music it was a random pick from number a kid in Netherlands only 9 won it =) n 3 yrs later he's still one of my biggest fan

Are you sure there isn't any better phone in the same price range? I mean, Nexus One is an OK phone, but it's bettet to put more money on a phone that doesn't have the obvious flaws of the N1.
Need I state them? Shouldn't have to.
The nexus one is an awesome phone, it's htc and not loaded with crappy sense, it means that comes with aosp, so we have aosp kernels and roms straight from google. The galaxy nexus is to expensive, plus it's plastic, as the nexus s, samsung has a good hardware but they are soap dishes. N1 has teflon and metal coating and with the corning glass its nearly indestructible, and its has a hardware to run nearly everything you throw at it. And the trackball is priceless.
My bro has a pyramid, its a good phone for sense. But theres no aosp experience cause they dont have the kernel, he is running cm7.1 kang (yes only kang exists) they have no hardware acceleration, my n1 beats that twocored monster.
If you are not a gamer, than you wont notice the multitouch problems, as the matter of fact i never noticed it.
So yes, the N1 is still a good phone, and it's worth to buy. For me there's no better phone in the market right now, maybe the Atrix 4G.

I don't have much money to work with anyways and on eBay it goes around for 80-110 bucks, which fits my budget.

I am not much of a gamer, on my iPhone the only multitouch game I have is Street Figher IV (as is left thumb on buttons and right thumb on other buttons) and all the other games are one touch (if that is what you call it) Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Where's my Water, Football Manager Handheld and etc all one touch.
So gaming is not my major concern, I just want a smartphone that does my calling and texting, where I can read my ebooks, watch some videos, listen to music, browse the web and etc.
Yes, i meant multitouch games, my friend has a hd2, so when i say gamer i mean "gamer" , but i haven't noticed there either i played samurai vengance or what? without problem. I think multitouch is alright it is just, not the same like in an iPhone for example.
As i said, really like my phone, the size is perfect, it is not plastic, the hardware is old but enough, we have a bounch of aosp roms, kernels, stable as hell.
The other obvious problem he was referring to was the power button that stops working...
who didnt have that problem?
I had mine fixed under warranty twice in it's first year... (before rooting and installing a rom..) now since it's got a rom, I barely ever use the power button since you may unlock the screen using the trackball or volume button (thank goodness for that!)
Dont get me wrong, it's a great phone, great finishing too, but the hassles of the power button would make me think twice about getting another one...
I've had the N1 since launch 2 years ago & still never faced the power button issue. I never even took any precautions to prevent it. I've upgraded to Galaxy Nexus and sadly passed down the N1 to my gf. Running MIUI for the eye-candy factor & she thinks it's the best phone ever made. haha.
While shopping between phone providors, at first I upgraded to the SGS2, & didn't notice much of an upgrade from the N1. So that speaks highly of the 2 year old phone's performance & build.
Got my N1 more than a year ago, and I'm still happy to play with. Broken power button, too, but still enjoy flashing "any" rom. Yeah, actually it's not my primary phone, just sort of gun with which I can learn more and more about android. Love it in every pieces coz it rocks till today...

Got my N1 just 2 weeks after it came out, that’s basically 2 years ago, and I haven’t had any issues with it. Everything is working as it should, no power button problems, and still using the original battery and can get over 37 hours from it. No root and have latest OTA update. So the only known issue that pops up from time to time is the touch screen unresponsiveness, and the lack of pinch&zoom pictures from Gallery, thanks to latest update. Just been lazy to root and fix that. I’ve compared to other phones I’ve got for the family like LG Optimus-T, two My Touch 4G and recently a Samsung Exhibit II 4G (just to be able to use it when I’m roaming or using a local SIM aboard and be able to connect to 3G/4G as it has all data bands). All for free from T-Mob due to my extreme loyalty to them; still I carry both my N1(with Simple Mobile) and MyTouch 4G, and I use 99% of the time the N1. It just feels good and I like how it performs. Sadly tough, I guess it’s time to move on and get the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, although I’m not sure if it will be a big step forward, just because of ICS is incorporated in it. My teen daughter is just waiting to inherit my N1, but I think I’ll just give her my HTC Glacier, and keep the N1. So in few words, it’s still a great phone!
i'd be interested in this, too. how much?
