i have no pc with windows. can i update rom on my htc hero just from memory card like i did it with windows mobile on sony ericsson xperia? tnx
The only "official" way to update your Hero is via an HTC RUU, which requires Windows.
However, if you are able to replace the recovery image on your Hero without needing to "downgrade" your ROM, you will be able to update via a zip file on your SD card.
This is very much dependent on the version of the ROM you already have on your device.

Dave
tnx
oh thanx! nobody else was able to answer his, i asked on many forums. thanx a lot!
so i just open the file manager on my phone, find the recovery image and replace it, then just go to settings / security / factory data reset ?
where can i find that file on phone?
where can i download the "recovery image"
..if you know, please
Have a look at this guide.
Note that it relies on you getting the APK and recovery images on to your SD card, and in the guide it mentions using a PC, but I think if you download using the browser on your phone you should be ok. However, you may need to use an Android file manager to move the recovery image to the root of your SD card.
If this doesn't work, you have no option (I believe!) but to use a PC to downgrade via an RUU before you will be able to upgrade.

Dave
Could you not do it via VM?
Yes you could, but I assume that when the OP says they don't have a PC with Windows, they mean they don't have access to any kind of PC with Windows, VM or no.
If they have access to a Mac, or a Linux PC, they'd be able to copy the APKs directly onto the SD card anyway.

Dave

or the operating system he is using... don't see the problem if he is using linux or mac, in fact any operating system that supports usb and has a compiler is suitable to do about anything you can do...
Is there anything which will let me return to windows mobile after I install android on my HTD HD2?
Basically I want a dual booting option so I can still use Windows Mobile - as I have just realised, just before install Android, that it is acutally quite useful. ???
Take out your SD card. Boot up. And place your card back in. Toodles.
Android cannot be "installed" yet. When you have android on your sdcard it will still boot windows first, then it gives you the option to boot android.
Some windows mobile roms ie. Chuckyrom, have a built in android loader, so that every time you boot you can choose which os to use.
Thanks
Thanks for the help - That must have sounded like a noob question - I am new to the whole putting android on the HD2 thing.
Thanks.
Is it possible to upgrade it to windows 7? I am really sick of windows 6.5 and even the android setup is not working on my phone. I guess its really complicated. I wish i could just remove windows and replace it with android. please guide me with this!
Thank You

There is no way you can upgrade your WinMo to WP7, due to different requirements, firmwares, processor, etc. Android OS is actually not so difficult to install as what you think. What you need is patience and reliable tutorial to follow. There are few different versions of Android available by different users:
1. Original default beta installation, install on SD card, transfer the files in and run haret.exe twice.
2. ISO file installation, install on My Storage, transfer the files in and run haret.exe once.
3. Manual installation, can be installed on either My Storage or SD Card, required Ubuntu to transfer the files, and run through haret.exe once.
4. Froyo Bundles, fixes most problems and most stable, can be installed on either My Storage or SD Card, transfer the files in and run.
Thanks. Will surely try again!
Cheers!
Go android. Windows is going the way of webos

Some of use crazy users dual boot our phones. For example on my HD2 I boot Windows Mobile 7 from NAND and Android from the SD card.
Not all dual boot environments support clockworkmod.
For some of us "dual booters" we are running Windows Mobile 7 not Windows Mobile 6.x. The problem with this is that clockworkmod does not work with Windows Mobile 7 and therefore we are unable to install many apps, fixes, etc.
My request is that when you develop something that would normally be installed with clockworkmod could you also please put installation instructions (or some kind of installer) for those of us who cannot use clockworkmod.
Thank you for considering this request and for your continued development efforts.
I flashed this phone to WP7 and it works fine but can't access market even after activation code. I have tried to flashe back using the sd card method but device not recognising sd cards also phone does not allow me to use windows activesync anymore so cannot do it that way either im basically stuck with a phone that does not work 100% any help will be greatly appreciated
you must change sdcard and find one which work (you must reflash or hard reset when insert new card).... HD2 dont have enough memory for WP7 and must use SDcard for this... but major problem is find good and compatible sdcard
for activation you must ask Microsoft support for live activation code for HTC HD7....
for this and others read install tutorial from my signature
I have done all that but still nothing. Every tutorial I see they are saying when usb plugged in then activesync should work but im getting nothing and I can't think of what else to do. So far my phone is done now I get no mobile data either just wifi I can't access facebook unless using browser. I was looking forward to using this phone but now its pretty useless
Which Windows you have on PC??? if you have XP then you must have ActiveSync... for Windows 7 and 8 you must have WMDC (windows mobile device center)

i never have any problems with sync on my (old) HD2... maybe some problem on your device or drivers
Check in Device Manager if anything shows up or needs drivers.
Does the device show "Serial" in bootloader when connected?
Turn on the phone into magldr and then use the usb mass storage option. It should allow full access to your microSD card and let you backup any files from there. Then format the card (FAT32, 4096 allocation size) and you should be able to reflash stock now.
