rom update without PC - Hero, G2 Touch General

i have no pc with windows. can i update rom on my htc hero just from memory card like i did it with windows mobile on sony ericsson xperia? tnx

The only "official" way to update your Hero is via an HTC RUU, which requires Windows.
However, if you are able to replace the recovery image on your Hero without needing to "downgrade" your ROM, you will be able to update via a zip file on your SD card.
This is very much dependent on the version of the ROM you already have on your device.
Regards,
Dave

tnx
oh thanx! nobody else was able to answer his, i asked on many forums. thanx a lot!
so i just open the file manager on my phone, find the recovery image and replace it, then just go to settings / security / factory data reset ?
where can i find that file on phone?
where can i download the "recovery image"
..if you know, please

Have a look at this guide.
Note that it relies on you getting the APK and recovery images on to your SD card, and in the guide it mentions using a PC, but I think if you download using the browser on your phone you should be ok. However, you may need to use an Android file manager to move the recovery image to the root of your SD card.
If this doesn't work, you have no option (I believe!) but to use a PC to downgrade via an RUU before you will be able to upgrade.
Regards,
Dave

Could you not do it via VM?

Yes you could, but I assume that when the OP says they don't have a PC with Windows, they mean they don't have access to any kind of PC with Windows, VM or no.
If they have access to a Mac, or a Linux PC, they'd be able to copy the APKs directly onto the SD card anyway.
Regards,
Dave

Hi,
How to install apk when:
- data connexion doesn't work
- there is no file browser installed by default by the build
- adding apk into Android/SystemApps or into Android/AndroidApps doesn't work befroe installing the build
I tried to use also I2APK but my HD2 is not recognized in windows XP: on the HD2 which usb mode i have to use in this case: charge only? Disk drive? ...
I havae already check the USB debugging mode.
Please help me

Two options you got:
1. Wi-Fi which I assume u dont have ;-);
2. Download Droid Explorer on your computer (http://de.codeplex.com/) and install it. It detects your Android phone. You can install applications to your phone from there.
Hope it helps.
Thanks
This is assuming you're running with the folder name Android:
If it doesn't exist already, create a folder called AndroidApps under your Android folder. Copy the apk that you want to install into that folder. Reboot. (I'd suggest putting a file browser in there like astro or es file explorer). Most builds I've used will install whatever is in that folder on bootup. (When I do a new build, I usually put mybackuppro apk in there, so I can boot up and restore all my data and apps.)

Already done (see my post1) but with this ROM MCCM_HD_V1.2_Beta_3 it has no effect....
I used to do the same as you: all my favorite apk inside this rep.
Regards
- all builds will have android market in it, so download "Linda file manager"
- boot back to winmo
- connect device to pc (usb)
- transfer all your .apk files (assuming you got it in your pc) to a folder (its up to you to name this) in the sd card.
- boot back to android, open up Linda file manager and search for that folder
- there you can install the .apk files you got
Or use adb. Just get your right drivers installed

You just have to make sure the HD2 is booted into Android. Second thing is to make sure you exit out of HTC Sync program. Check in your system tray and right click and exit from it before launching Droid Explorer.
It works for me always.
Edit: n I dont have to choose any option on the HD2 screen, or you can choose 'Charge Only'. That works fine.

After a few hours on the net and with your advises i succeeded in installing ES File browser and every thing is OK now.
Just for my own information i tried to find a clear tuto of how to use adb and i couldn't find one: have you got one?
I need absolutly to install Android SDK?
What is the Good driver?
If i install this new driver it is not a risk of bad recognition if i connect my HD2 in WinMo mode?
For Droid explorer and I2apk it is this driver which is missign too?
Which USB mode on my HD2 device i have to choose to connect to adb? to droid or I2apk soft?
Regards and thanks again to everybody.
PS: @jigners: As i said i my first post Market Place didn't work because of non data connexion.

No access to my SDcard from my computer with USB

Hello all !
Everything is on the title.
However, my computer detect the phone (from the disk manager and other program).
I updated the pilots (from Kies), but nothing change =/
From the device manager, I can see a yellow triangle next to my phone : so, it's problem with the pilots.. But they are updated !
I searched a file with them, but I didn't find it..
So, a solution ?
Thanks !
PS : I have this problem since I tried to flash my phone with the last Lestatious ROM.
Have you selected the "mass storage" option?
If you have MTP driver fail then you have to update your Windows.

I'm always using the mass storage option, the begug USB is always set on.
What's MTP driver ? And what do you mean by "update your Windows" ?
Thx !
There is a known issue with old MTP USB drivers(used to connect our devices). I had it too. I looked for windows updates(not new windows version). I mean the patches. I updated them and it worked.
But is your phone recognized by KIES or ADB?
Same problem!!
Guys,
I'm having the same problem. When i use stock i5801DDJP2 and connect to mass storage everything is fine. But after flashing to Kyrillos' or Indroid's ROM with Fugumod Kernel v2.4 beta 3, when i try to connect to mass storage via USB my PC is not detecting my SD card. Don't know what to do.. Any solutions pls??...
EDIT: Sometimes Kies detects my SD card. But not always. And as for ADB, it recognizes the device as an Android device but i'm not sure what to do.

SD card not recognized!
Hey Vermillon,
U found a solution yet? i tried everything to my knowledge(which is not much )But nothing yet. it worked when i flashed with stock i5801zhjpf. But after flashing to kyrillos the problem was back.. No luck so far. Can't connect USB storage.
I downloaded a mtp patch, but it didn't solved the problem.
News : I plugged the micro-Sdcard into my computer, and I still can't access to it.
However, my SDcard works, I can take pictures or ad files on it (thx dropbox).
So : the problem is from the SDcard ? Or from the firmware (even the stock XXJPM) which avoid the Sdcard to connect ?
OK ! I've the solution !
Use Linux to connect your phone (I'm running a live Ubuntu, and it works).
I have excactly the same Problem, but unfortunatley im not a linux user, and i dont want to install linux just to connect to the sdcard in my mobile phone.
Maybe someone finds a solution for windows users, i tried already all i could think of including the *#7284# i found in another forum.
I too have same problem. Forcing me to use card reader.

Well, if you can still use the card reader, where's the problem ? I'd say "lucky you !"
For me the SDCard Reader Solution is workling as well, but its not very comfortable to remove the SDCard from the Phone everytime i want to copy some stuff.
I'm going to try the Ubuntu Solution as well, but i think there must be another way, it seems to be a problem with the Kyrillios Rom, after i flashed it, the problem occured.

The problem comes from the pilot : in the device manager, Windows indiquates an error code 10, which mean "can't start".

[Q] Rooting problem

Hello to all,
I'm a new Android user that has recently migrated from Windows Mobile 6.1. I have downloaded this FRX06_Full_Bundle_25.3.2011.zip and successfully installed it on my SD Card. This distribution works OK, but there are some minor issues I need to fix. So I need a root access to my phone. And here comes the problem how to do it.
I read several articles over the internet how to root your phone but all of them are about phones where Andoid is installed in the ROM. Moreover - they require USB access to the phone. And I have problems finding the correct USB drives or my phone USB does not work.
So could you point me an article that explains how to root my phone when Android is installed on the SD Card. Is there a way to do it by mounting the SD card on my laptop via the card reader. I want to avoid using the USB port.
BR
Are you trying on Windows or Linux?
Did you install ADB on your pc already?
Did you enable developers access on the android?
I think you need to provide a little bit more info.
Yea, sorry about that.
I'm using Windows 7 64bit. Currently I'm unable to find suitable drivers...
I have enabled the developers access on my phone, but the drivers problem wouldn't let me root my phone using the conventional approach.
So I'm wondering is there any other way to root the phone that does not include the USB port...
The build comes rooted out of the box. There's nothing additional you need to do in order to root.
You should probably read the FAQ if want more info on adb.
adb is not required for root access. Again, FRX06 comes rooted, nothing needs to be done to 'root' this build.
arrrghhh, thanks for the help. Indeed the distribution is rooted by default. I have confirmed this with the terminal application.
I have a problem with the Samba Filesharing (funkyFresh). The app website states states that the telephone is not rooted or Superuser not installed (I have already installed this). That's why I have tried to "root" my phone...

Access Internal Memory with PC

Hi,
i am fairly new to android coming from ios.
I opened my s3 and its:
ap i9300buale6
cp i9300bule6
csc i9300vfgale6
android 4.0.4
Then i did the following:
- Using Odin i flashed CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.tar.
- Using Google Play installed Busybox
- Using EFS_Pro_1.12.6_Release a EFS backup (tar)
- Using CWM i created a Nandroid backup in the internal storage (got no SD)
Thats where i am at now.
My goals are now.
1. Get the nadroid backup somehow from the internal memory to the PC
2. Update stock firmware and root again
3. Access and edit the Host file
How do 1 and 3 and with which tools?
I tried FTPServer and used FlashFXP on my PC, i can successfully connect but FlashFXP (and firefox) cannot list directories or files from the S3.
thanks in advance
I am confused. Why go through all this process for (1)? Just connect your phone to your pc with usb and copy the folder located in clockworkmod/backup.
The hosts file is located in /etc/hosts but you're gonna need a root file manager like Estrongs File Explorer (market, free), to edit it.
Edit: if you just want to get rid of ads, install and run Adaway (market, free as well).

because when i connect the s3 to the pc i cannot browse the s3 at all.
it doesnt appear in the explorer but at the same time efs made a backup and
obviously found it
What OS are you using? Win7? Enable usb debugging in Settings->Developer in case it helps.
Also when you connect your phone, does it show anything regarding USB on its statusbar/notification?
Edit: If all else fails, I'd suggest downloading this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488 . Among other things it can install the correct drivers for you.

Quite frankly you don't really need to install kies. Personally I've only used it once and it's a PoS.
Download that program from the thread I linked earlier, run it and follow the instructions to install the drivers. You should be good to go.

You're on Verizon? If yes, you're in the wrong forum. This is for the international version of GS3, so make sure you don't flash anything from this section.

You may need the USB drivers - I tried Search to give you a link here but Search is "Temporarily Unavailable" Then your PC should see the phone and, when you get one, the ext SD card. You should make it a priority to get a card as you can backup to it or move backups etc. to it using something like EFS Explorer or other root enabled file manager.
Then, if you can't get your phone to show in Explorer, you can simply remove the SD card and use a card reader to transfer stuff to the PC. Then, if you STILL can't see the phone, I'd be speaking to the vendor about possible faults/solutions.
Found a location for DL'ing the USB drivers - http://d-h.st/h11. Hope it helps...
i am in the right forum i am from germany
Hm... I think I must have forgotten to refresh the page before I posted, Last post I saw was at 10:49 but the issue was resolved in later ones and before I posted. Strange...
Not sure if the Nexus drivers are the same as my link (earlier version also) but they should be - they are for the PC not the phone so I doubt there'd be specific customisation in the driver file. You may want to update to v1.5.4.0 anyway... Just run the file with Admin permissions and it should install over the top of the older drivers.

Something interesting?

So after flashing the new lollipop update I found myself stuck in a bootloop unable to get into the android operating system at all. I used flashboot and the intel flash tool to try and restore to an older ROM. It forze at 91% with an "error:unable to mount /data" I then used the root tool to try and sideload and install the update.zip from adb shell. No luck. When I rebooted I got to a strange efi menu. Looked around, and it gives me the option to install with with windows?
Anyone have any ideas. I'm waiting for radio shack to open, its the only local place that sells USB otg cables locally.

I can see "fast boot" enabled. Have You tried to switch it off? any other menu is displayed?
Have You tried to "power+vol down" on it?
I've tried a few ways to get into the BIOS shown... all failed.
Maybe the only way to trigger the BIOS to show is to fully wipe/format the internal storage so the BIOS can't pick up droidboot or anything else. Quite risky though if it isn't the way.
I'm in no way telling anyone to do this and I have not tried it myself. I'd be curious to hear from any advanced users if they have ever completely wiped the internal memory and what options would be available to restore if things did go wrong.

It seems it's not as clear cut as first thought. Mind you, I didn't expect it to be. I did try a HP keyboard with OTG in Android and that got picked up ok (No lights on keyboard)
I'm a bit in the same mind as Social-Design. I'd rather have a definite way to restore Android from a totally blank internal drive before I have a go. Just up to page 214 in the thread so it may be covered later.
UEFI soft brick?
Hi guys,
I accidentely tried to use the firmware on my 1050 as described in this thread. I can indeed load the UEFI BIOS with all its settings (even though most don't do anything). But unfortunately, I cannot load any OS. I always get the error "EFI Harddrive failed" - meaning it cannot boot fomr hardrive.
I have used an externally powered USB-HUB with mouse, keyboard and USB-Stick and connected to the 1050 via OTG-cable. If the stick is bootabnle with GPT x64 then it will boot from that stick. All 64bit windows versions that I tried failed to install with "ACPI_BIOS_ERROR". 32bit windows would not start, because the GPT is 32bit and the BIOS does not recognise it.
The best success I had so far was to copy a ISO from android-x86 on the usb stick. It will boot in live-mode from the USB. Not so suprisignly, mouse and keyboard are working, touch isn't. WiFI is working and the SD card is detected. I tried to install this version of android on the harddrive which works, but it installs the EFI GRUB bootloader which is not recognised by the BIOS.
I can also access the UEFI shell.
Unfortunately, I am running a bit out of ideas of what to do in order to get a normal system (or firmware) back. ADB-drivers obviously don't work (the Intel SoC driver is installed as well), so I cannot use the Phone Flash Tool.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

extract and dd this to a usb drive and see if it is able to boot it View attachment 3415895 if it successfully boots replace the fastboot.img thats on the thumbrive with one for your devices and see if it boots. if your fastboot.img is named droidboot.img rename it to fastboot.img.
If you can successfully get your devices droidboot/fastboot.img to load you can then disconnect the usb-otg cable and reconnect it to your PC and use the phone flash tools to restore your device completely.
