Holy crap... I am coming from a Galaxy SII, now got an Atrix today (Bell Version)
And omg, what a mess it seems?
Was so easy to root and add my own ROMS to the S2, with this Atrix, theres so much crap I gotta do in order to get CM7.
I am bare stock, out of the box. I need a super easy guide on how to unlock bootloader and get CM7 on this.
I am on gingerbread... Stock..

Thanks guys, I got the bootloader unlocked, installed racer recovery, but I cannot delete the file in syste/etc install-recovery.sh because it give me error saying FILE is Read OnlY! Im using root explorer, and tried ASTRO, and I am not rooted, so I cant get permission to delete it???
I just need to delete that to get into proper recovery mode and install CM7, its already in my SD card.
MANNNNN, just need final step
Ive tried 3 methods to root my phone, none worked. I need to delete that install-recovery.sh file
Looks like I missed the STICKY about Petes 1 click root!!!
WORKED
Deleted the file I was talking about, and when Im in recovery mode, still just show android and triangle, clicking the corner dont do anything...
Do I need to reflash the racer recovery maybe?:
WOW! I reflash the racer and now it works, installing CM7 now
Hey guys Im missing the Market and when I try to download from the web it says I need an SD card
What do I do now? I need Market, anyway I can get it without it asking me for an SD card? My Atrix is 16GB....
CM7 is installed, just missing Market now...
if I'm not mistaken, the atrix CM7 requires use of an external SD card.

Seriously, wtf.
So I wont be able to get Market apk without buying an sd card for the Atrix which already has 16gb unused in it....
i think there's a way to swap around the settings so that CM can use the internal memory. check the FAQ's listed in the CM7 thread.
You could try going into
Cyanogen mod settings > applications> use internal storage, and then try to dl the market.

The Motorola Flipout is fairly easy to root, at least now. Universal Androot (get it here) works.
I am thinking about moving apps to the sd card. However, since I haven't reflashed the phone, and I don't have a ROM for it, I'd like to do it without reflashing. Is that possible?
If I partition an SD card correctly (ext3), copy all of /data onto that partition, and then mount that partition over /data, will that work? Or do I have to mount the card before the phone boots?
Or is it better to just copy /data/data, and mount the partition over /data/data?
It seems to me that mounting over a directory, as opposed to creating a link is least invasive, because on reboot the phone is as it was before. Is this right?
If I have to mount the sdcard before the phone boots, can I just edit one of the init scripts, or is that more complicated? I read about editing init.rc and repacking boot.img
Oh, HOWTO unpack edit and repack boot images seems to give good instructions. On the Flipout, boot is mtd4, and recovery is mtd5.
If I only modify boot, I can't brick my phone too badly? Since I haven't changed recovery, I should be able to recover (?). Can I create an update.zip that flashes the old boot.img and undoes my changes in case something goes wrong?
I just got the flipout from rogers.. Is there anyplace that has a development forum for it? And does it have the efuse ? If it does, is it possible to do what was done with the droid X to it?
How did go so far ghostwheel? I'm eager to hear what else you have figured out.
You use App2Card.apk at below for app2sd without flash:
http://www.tinhte.vn/f280/app2card-2-4-4-20-9-cai-dat-ung-dung-len-nho-phan-vung-456586/
Requires: just a rooted phone
Steps:
- install app
- click Menu / Partition button then use slide bars to create ext2 for your sd card if it hasn't been splited yet
- click Install App2card button
- phone will be rebooted and you just taste app on sd after then
Note: above page has further instruction but it is vietnamese, you must use google translate to get it. This app runs perfectly on my Milestone.

Hi,
I'd really like to help with that (I'm a confirm dev. for Cliq and CliqXT phones).
Hopefully we can do great things like we did for Cliq and CLiqXT (upgrade to 2.1!). (check my work at http://bit.ly/adlxmod).
First thing would be to generate a system dump (a dump of all the files in the /system partition). Hopefully we then could generate a custom recovery to flash on the phone, and then custom roms, either base on the dump you provide or other roms from other files. Contact me on twitter @adumont (say it's for Flipout) and I'll guide you to generate the dump!
Looking forward to do great things for that litle phone!
I'm in touch with adlxdum to give him my dump but I think we should start a separated thread like "Custom rom, modding (work in progress)" so that we can follow adlxdum work.
And...thx in advance ;-)

Worked!
I couldn't repartition the SD card with the program, so I had to partition it myself. But once that was done, thing seem to work well. A bit slower...
I'm not totally sure how to use the app. Internal seems to still be full, but ext2 on the SD is quite empty. I can't seem to be able to tell if an app is installed to internal or external.
I have to try and install some more apps to see if I run out of memory.
Thanks!!
I'm guessing the flipout and charm are almost identical phones?

Yes, I think they are very similar.
One thing that I'm interested in is the accelerometer. On the Flipout, most apps that use it are twisted - for example wikitude, and many games (labyrinth lite works!) I wonder if things work on the charm...
the charm has the same issue.

Hi ghostwheel
I've tried installing app2card, but I'm having some problems. I got the new version 2.7.2.
As you said, the partition doesnt work. For me it says sd card is full but its empty...
How did you manually partition it?
I've found some tutorials but it was for other phones and they required a custom rom...
I partitioned the card using a linux computer, with the program fdisk.
I allocated 2GB to a partition of type ext2. But, I think there are many alternatives for partitioning a disk, see this page:
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f9/how-to-create-ext2-partition-14232/
Wow great link! Many different options! Will try this as soon as I get a micro sd card adapter. Thanks!
You mentioned in your old post that you were having problems using app2card, That you weren't sure if it was working. Have you been able to use it since? Is it working well? and if not have you found an alternative?
I just started using this phone and I'm almost running out of memory... this is quite annoying!

Yes, I was having problems. Mainly when restarting the phone, sometimes oodles of apps don't work, including launcher pro, and app2card. You have to remember that when the phone reboots and seems to have FC problems, don't chose any home screen as the default, in case it crashes, and keep a spare app2card to reinstall on the sdcard. I think "severe" problems I had only twice, or so.
So, I have almost no problems. Most of the time it works really well. So well, in fact, that I'm a bit afraid to upgrade it, in case something breaks. And, I totally forgot what it is like to have to delete apps to install another one.
I have more of the opposite problem - finding an app among all those installed takes a realllly long time if you forgot its name. Apps organizer helps.
hello, i am new and i have flipout to test in poland orange network, i just root him using 1st post in this forum, great job! thanks
OK, I am having some problems with the current version of app2card. As I said, sometimes when I turn the device off and back on, app2card fails, and many apps give a FC which starting. Then one needs to fix the apps from app2card. It seems that once that is done, some apps lose some of their data. So, for example, droidwall (excellent program!!), lost all firewall data. I'll have to check if newer versions of app2card don't have this problem. It doesn't happen very often.
Instructions to root Flipout
Hi - I'd consider myself a newbie regarding rooting. I just got the AT&T Flipout - I really like the form factor. I just tried running the Universal Androot from my phone but got the security warning message about only being able to install from trusted sources.
Can someone point me in the right direction please?
Many thanks!
it says that with a lot of apps installed like that, including gmote that I downloaded from the developers site. Just look at what you're downloading like you would on any machine
go to settings > Application and tick on unknown sources to be able to install it.
Hi,
i'm very happy with my arc, but i want to root it. i have fastboot lock so i'm gonna use gingerbreak i think. But is there a official site or something where we can find the official ROMS of sony ericsson if anything go wrong ? And how are we going to update gingerbread when update will be available ?
Cheers
Rooting with Gingerbreak doesn't cause anything wrong with your ROM. Also you can use SEUS if you still have your boot loader locked.
OK thanks, i'm going to do that. But i can't find a way to launch the gingerbreak apk, everybody speaks as everything was obvious, but i don't know what adb is, and i can't put the app on the phone (not the sd card...) but i'm gonna google it.

just put the gingerbreak apk (v1.2 is the one i used) in the sd card then launch Application Installer (in my Arc this app is included) then you're all set. ah and remember to set first the usb debugging. and on my arc it didn't format the card.
regards
Put the .apk on the SD card, and open it using astro file manager.
Yeah thanks i opened it with root explorer i think it's the same thing... doesn't work for me. I press root, then it unmount my SD card and then i wait forever and nothing happens, so i press home, try to mount my SD card, the app crash so i need tro restart and i'm back where i started..
you need set allow usb debugging to true before you run the apk. I used 1.2 too, it only took like 2 sec to do it.
and when it says "mount your sd card" means mount it to the phone, not your computer.
Thank you i made it really cool i delete all the app add by orange !!! I have one last question If an update comes out will i be able to update if im rooted ? And is it going to unroot my phone ?
Yes - you'll still be able to update using SEUS - rooting won't affect that.. but you will lose the root!...you might be better off installing a generic .184 or .181 rom using Flashtool so that you get the early update, and none of the junk Orange like to add!
I already thought about that but there is some apps usefull from orange like voicemail like iphone... and i dont know where to find those official roms
I recently bought an Evo Shift that is running CyanogenMod 7 with gingerbread.
The guy I bought it from was using this, phone active, saw it with my own eyes....now that I have it, I can't get it activated with Sprint. They are saying that there is no option for "Update PRL".
Now, I don't know anything about rooting phones and all this jazz. So, as of right now, I have a $180 paper weight.
Can someone PLEASE help me. I've tried downloading the stock rom. But everything it gives me "Error 170: USB connection". I don't know what else to do.
Sounds like you got gypped.
Does it just give you errors all around? And for the price you paid, you should have just gotten it at a retail store (granted you would have needed a contract too). Maybe the guy locked it up or something.
I really don't know what to tell you. Sorry
Well as long as u can still get in the phone all u gotta do is download a sense rom from the development section ..I reccomend mikshift 1.1 .. then once that is downloaded put it on ur sd card ..I'm assuming u have one..okay so after the mikshift zip file is in the root of ur sd card u have to to go into recovery. U can do this by holding the power button and then tapping on reboot more options should come up and one of them should say recovery.I belive that cm7 does have that option....anyway once ur in recovery go to backup and restore and make a backup just in case.once the backup is done u should still be in recovery then wipe data and wipe cache then go into advance and wipe dalvik cache...then go back and go to install zip from sd card and choose the mikshift.zip file which should be all the way at the bottom of the list if u put it in the right place.so choose that and once its done reboot ur phone and wait awhile for it to boot up then go to settings and u should be able to update the prl

I don't think that's the case. The phone was on and working when we called Sprint. Everything was fine with it. But I guess to activate it from Sprint, it has to be the stock programming. Which I guess makes sense.
I didn't want to buy the phone with a contract. That's why I went that route. And that's by far the cheapest I found one. I'm sure it's a simple fix for someone who knows about this stuff. But I don't know anything about them.

Ok, I got most of what you're saying. The only thing you lost me on is when you said putting "the mikshift zip file is in the root of your sd card". How do I know where that is. I created a folder and added a zip file in there. But does it need to go somewhere more specific?

Ideally you want to put the .zip on the root of your sd (not inside any folders) but it will still work from inside the folder. Once your in recovery and perform a backup/wipe, choose install from zip, locate the folder you placed the file in,Then select and clockwork will do the rest. Then reboot and enjoy.
yes.. take it out of that folder and put it where all the other folders on ur sd card are ..in other words just drag it onto ur sdcard where it shows as a removable disk on windows.just straight into that

Glad you got it working.
The EXE files only work if you run it from your computer, by hooking up your phone to the PC, via the usb cable. You would need HTC Sync installed, as well. Zip files can be flashed directly from the phone, through recovery.

this might help if you're still having issues; so far i think there is a lot of promise with cyanogen, if you can figure it out.
Hey yall,
I recently purchased what I consider to be one of the best phones one the market (Epic 4g) for the second time and this one I bought off of Swappa.com for $100. The phone is in great condition, with ICS which my last Epic didnt have, and it also has cyanogen 9 mod which my old phone didnt have either. I have never modified a phone or rooted them or anything like that. But I like the cyanogen mod so I dont mind it. The phone also has the latest clockwork recovery.
But the phone cannot activate with Sprint because the rep says the numbers have been wiped from the phone. I read somewhere that I may need a certain kernel that mimics the codes or replaces the codes or something?
Can anyone point me to a stable, reliable source for a kernel that will let me activate the phone and keep cyanogen 9 mod?
Sorry if this is just a total f**#$# noob question that makes you want to pull your hair out but I honestly dont know anything about the latest software or anything like that. However I am very resourceful and I got this far, I think I can install a kernel if someone could just point me in the direction of a good file to download.
Thanks in advance!

And how to get mobile ODIN on my phone? Do I need mobile ODIN or can I use regular ODIN? In the video he said you could use either one...

We don't have mobile odin. You will need to odin stock and the cwm recovery and nubernel so you can keep the recovery because samsung has it so stock recovery returns after a reboot, and nubecoder fixed that so you'll need his kernel. Then you can reflash cm9. Once the cm team or me include nexus s 4g ril and modem in a build, then we can make updating prl and profile and activating possible. With ours it is impossible.

There is no link inthe OP, there is a link in a quoted reply and while I got that link to work at home and began the download,I cannot begin the download here on my work computer. Is there an updated link anywhere for the stock el30 multiboot for samsung epic? Any clue why the download worked at home but not on my work PC? It might be a firewall or something so I am going to go home and put the file on my thumb drive.

If he already has CM9 then he already has custom recovery (and root, etc) All he needs is the multiboot flashable to temporarily boot into the stock rom. The latest version is FC09 - I'll see if I can link to that thread, but it is in the development section (Epic 4G development)
EDIT: Here is the multiboot thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...te PRL and Calibrate Sensors for CM9 and AOKP
The OP of that thread contains a link to the correct page on the Epic CM team blog, in which you find full instructions, a link and the md5sum (definitely verify the md5 before continuing)
You will need your computer to extract the archive (most android apps for archive files seem to struggle with this one, and while I swear I did it successfully once, I have been unable to duplicate that result or find the app that worked), and it's generally easier to download on the PC as well to avoid a few quirks.

That link is the one in the previous post I mentioned. I got the link to download at my house, my work had it firewalled.
Ok so I got the file, now how do I install it or run it? Just put it on the SD card and then boot in recovery and flash it to everything? Do I need to unzip the files before putting them on the SD card or anything?

Yeah, I just noticed that TazFanatic had already posted it without a description - but the same link from two people is better than no links from anyone, I suppose
That archive needs to be extracted to your sdcard in a very specific directy structure. Check the instruction in the blog where you downloaded the multiboot, but I believe you should be able to extract to the root of the sdcard (with a computer, not your phone - I can't stress that enough) with the option checked to recreate the folder structure.
Once extracted, the actual flashable zip is found in the FC09 folder, which is in the multiboot folder (and may still be EL30, although I have an updated version which I was sure came from that page). Flashing that zip from custom recovery will not actually install anything, but it will reboot the phone after setting it up to boot the rom on the sdcard instead of reading the internal storage where your rom (CM9) is installed.
But as I said, that page should cover all of the details, so be sure to read it thoroughly and you shouldn't have any problems (or additional questions on the subject) from this point forward

Go to the settings screen (menu capacitive key, then "settings" on the touch screen - just in case, I don't know how familiar you are with android or the Epic so I'm just covering the bases, lol)
From there, look for the "storage" sub menu, where you'll be able to see if the phone is detecting the sd card (if you have the card in and it does NOT give you the option to mount or unmount the sd card, then it thinks no card is present)
If the phone is also not detecting the sdcard, then it sounds like the card was corrupted - you may have to reformat it, which will erase everything on it. If it is detected, then maybe rebooting your computer will clear out whatever is preventing it from detecting the card when you put it in the computer... but it sounds like you'll most likely find that the phone isn't even detecting it - try rebooting the phone and checking it again under storage, before you start worrying about reformatting the card...
Also, for everyone else following along - this is why you should not sell a phone with a custom rom on it. Too many problems, better to give the new owner a link to xda and let them decide if they want to take the leap

Also, for everyone else following along - this is why you should not sell a phone with a custom rom on it. Too many problems, better to give the new owner a link to xda and let them decide if they want to take the leap

I thought you said the computer wouldn't read the sd card even if you took it out of the phone and put it into the computer? Hopefully I misunderstood - your wording above seem to suggest a successful usb mount...
I'll keep checking this thread periodically just in case you need more help (I tend to neglect my PMs, or I'd say send me one, but posting here will reach more of our knowledgeable and helpful users)

Thank you to all who participated in this thread. I did themultiboot and it automatically activated OTA. The sprint rep already had my account linked to the DEC number, it just needed to send out that proper signal. Thanks again to everyone here who helped me.

Now what badass stuff can I do with this cyanogen that I couldnt do with my old Epic??? What re yall's favorite features?
Can anyone tell me how to add icons to my desktop or homescreens? I want to add apps and contacts on my home screens and I cant figure out how. Its not the same as on the old epic, now when I hold on the screen it just pops up the wallpaper selector, I can't add a shortcut, someone tell me what to do?

Your first question is quite broad, so I highly recommend reading the EpicCM blog site and the official site, cyanogenmod.com, because there are so many features that we will likely forget a few (unless we read the web pages for you, but then you have to trust our summaries... anyone remember the telephone game from childhood? Best to go straight to the source, lol)
That doesn't mean we won't try, of course... but I can't decide on a favorite feature, lol. The theme engine is a well-known feature that is almost a CM exclusive (it originally came from T-Mobile phones). I'm currently on the CM7 side of my usual cycle of roms, so I have to work from memory until I decide to switch back (I stay with 7 most of the time because I can't afford a decent replacement battery, lol)
As for homescreen shortcuts, both apps and widgets can be found in the app drawer - long-press and drag to drop them on the homescreen. There may be a direct dial widget (I haven't messed with direct dial shortcuts since long before CM9, so no guarantees on this part) - dropping it on the homescreen should open a dialogue where you can choose the contact to shortcut to. I know that other widgets that have variables that lack logical default values, like the direct navigation widget, work that way... I'm just not 100% sure if there is a direct-dial, or just a shortcut to the contact info

Ok that works for apps, what about putting specific individual contacts as shortcuts on the homescreen(s)? Can't figure that one out... need to get my wifey on there... thanks in advance y'all.

Hey
I am the owner of a Samsung xcover2 - s7710. I have ben looking for a Way to get cm mod installed. It is not possible to move apps to sd Card on it it seems, and Winther only 1 gb storage left I Got tired of the Samsung ROM.
I managed to get the Phoenix rooted first.
Next I Got the cwm recovery installed using odin.
Now I cannot seem to find my sd Card where the cm files are... How do I get that to show or mounted in a way?
Nxt is there a step by step tutorrial I Can use and if someone Can point me to it, on how to get the cm, I Think I have read that some caches need to be reset along the Way? So a step by step guide World be awesome.
And when I get it installed there are no apps on it is there? So I need to get some Google apps for it, and does it come in a bundle for that specific phone or is there a standard package, and how to install?
Sorry if I seem a retard, but I find it bit hard to navigate here.
And I apologize if I have misspelled alot in This msg - writing from ipad and the gawd awful keyboard and autocorrection...
Thx
