Zte score.. - Blade General

I know this is the blade section but i can't find the answer at all on Google. Is it possible to root the zte score and put cyanogenmod on it? Or any ROM? Thanks in advance

It's most likely possible & if it's like other ZTE devices pretty easy, but it's the first I've heard about this phone, I don't know if there are any custom roms for it yet.

Try to root your phone with Z4root or Universal Androot. Then install ROM Manager and flash clockworckmod recovery and download CM 7(if exists) ->Install.

Zte score runs gingerbread 2.3.5 from what i've read

This method should let you root it, if it's like other ZTE androids - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319257
I haven't seen a custom rom, but you could always make one, a CM7 port might not be too hard.
AFAIK there is no clockworkmod version & rom manager doesn't support it. It shouldn't be too hard to make a compatible clockworkmod.
It's a new phone & I think it's only available in the USA.

It is possible to root the ZTE Score, but I have yet to find any ROMS or Recovery Images for it How To Root The Cricket ZTE Score X500.

Is it the same phone as the T-Mobile Vivacity that has just gone on sale in the UK?
https://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/pay-as-you-go/t-mobile-vivacity-black-payg/
The specs are a bit vague. Is it 600mhz? Is it HVGA (320X480) or WVGA (480x800) display?
In the UK it's the same price as the Orange San Francisco 2 (ZTE Blade 2), which is 800mhz WVGA, so I'm not sure that it'll be a huge seller here.
The Score could be very similar to the ZTE Blade, has anybody tried the blade version of clockworkmod on it? If the Blade clockworkmod works, then maybe Blade roms could too, or they might just need small modifications.

I think you may be right on that, but I am scared to try with no way to recover the phone if something were to go wrong.....ahhh, I may do it anyway. maybe.

If it's the 'Blade 2', same as the UK Orange Sanfrancisco 2 & T-Mobile Vivacity (and called god knows what else in the rest of the world) then expect some roms shortly. They went on sale in the UK this week at £99 with no contract or free for £10-£15/month contracts, so a few will be sold at that price.
Specs for that seem to be 800mhz msm7227t cpu, 5mp rear camera with led flash, front camera, 512mb ram 512mb rom, 3.5" wvga 480x800 screen.
ZTE like to make their model numbers & names as confusing as possible. They're pretty vague with the specs too. It could be totally different for all I know.
If you just flash ClockworkMod using fastboot, then if it doesn't work you haven't really broken anything. I'm not sure if there is a clockworkmod build that might work on it yet though. Certainly dont flash anything else until you have clockworkmod working on there & take a backup.
Changes have been added to the source for the CM7 kernel for Blade 2 compatibility, so it shouldn't be long until we get a CM7 port for it. CM9 probably next year sometime.

Thank you for the reply . Now how would I go about porting cm7 and what version of what phone would i have the most luck porting? And cwm as well or would I have a better bet asking koush to make a cwm for the score (x500)

There are CM7 ports for the ZTE Blade, V9 Tablet & an unofficial port for the ZTE Skate. The Blade or Skate ports could be a good starting point, depending on what hardware it has in it.
https://github.com/TomGiordano/kernel_zte_blade is the kernel, it has support for the Blade 2, if you compile it with the included blade 2 config.
So you'll have to compile your own, some hardware might not work immediately in CM7 without fixing it (depending on what hardware the phone has), but it should be relatively easy.
Sebastian404 has made an unofficial build of Clockworkmod - http://android.modaco.com/topic/348988-recovery-clockworkmod-recovery-for-zte-blade-2/

It looks like the ZTE Score is the CDMA version of the ZTE Roamer. It's pretty different to the ZTE Blade & it's not a Blade 2 either, it has a lower resolution screen, 600mhz cpu.
As far as I know there aren't any custom roms for it. The ZTE Blade wasn't sold in the USA, the ZTE Score is only sold in the usa & wont work on the gsm networks we have in the rest of the world. So most of the people here wouldn't be able to use a ZTE Score even if they imported one.
ZTE phones are usually simple to unlock & put a custom rom on, but I don't think anybody here in this forum can give much more than general advice.

I do understand that the ZTE X500 is the cheapest model from this manufacturer. Which conjures the question as to which of the former models would best compare to the Score, and also which rooting process would work properly for this phone.
I am new to the rooting process, but I am no stranger to "tweeking". I can comprehend general/ advanced explanations considerably ... so don't hold back the information. I do lack certain [fundamental] skills, as I am self taught. Still I get by and pickup rather easily.
Being that there is no known way to undo certain applications added to the Score, I don't have the full freedom to probe and tinker as I would like. However, I still will give a crack at it myself.
I will keep in mind caution, but I have a knack for tampering.
I am currently using this phone as a line of communication, and gaming. My goal is to make it run smoother, boost performance, functioning, speed, optimization, ... etc. Basically suitable for gaming and primary use. [More so gaming...]
The phone is actually pretty descent despite the device not being able to support much of the available software/apps that the android market/ community offers. [i.e Flashplayer] I think its a great starter android [transitioners], hackers, and the commercial usage. Though, being that I am a gamer, the LCD is quite small for my taste.
I honestly want to configure an easier method for rooting these phones. Seeing as there is no specific program.
» Posted using ZTE X500

It should be the same easy rooting process as for other zte android phones, zte don't usually use locked bootloaders, so it's easy - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319257
As I said before, it appears to be the CDMA version of the ZTE Roamer. I don't think the roamer has been a big seller, so you're out of luck if you want a ready made clockworkmod & custom roms.
It's like a ZTE Blade, but with a low res screen & cdma rather than gsm.
Kernel source code is available for the ZTE Roamer, hopefully that will work for the Score too, although there's no mention of the ZTE Score in the source.
For somebody who has one of these phones & the technical skills to do it, it shouldn't be hard to create a ZTE score compatible clockworkmod & custom roms. The ZTE Blade & ZTE V9 tablet are official CM7 devices, I think there are unofficial ports for the Blade2, Skate & Racer.

I haven't seen them anywhere.
You'll need two unmodified phones & a working clockworkmod to get a full stock rom backup, including recovery.img
What is the ZTE model number for the ZTE Score? (usually P followed by 3 numbers) I can have a look on their update server, might be nothing there yet though.

Model number is X500.

i know these posts are over a month old, but just incase anyone is still having a problem rooting this phone, a friend of mine brought hers over, complained how slow it was and how there was ABSOLUTELY NO memory left internally. i took a look at it, the system rom takes up like 96% of the system mem. so of course she wanted me to "work my magic" on it. i rooted it in 45 seconds using superoneclick v2.3.3, no problems at all. so if anyone is still looking for an easy root method, try superoneclick with the version that corresponds to the version of android on your score (superoneclick v2.2 if youre running froyo, 2.3 for gingerbread, 2.3.1 for 1st gb update, 2.3.2 for the second, etc., etc..
now for a decent rom...i cant find anything. i cant even find any news about anyone working on a port. there is hardly any development for this phone. i dont know much about porting roms, so i cant compile cm for the blade and work on porting it to the score, sorry. but if i do learn, or if anyone is willing to give me some guidance, i would be willing to do some of the leg work for this community and my friends sake. i myself am a happy epic 4g owner, running the latest cm7 nightly for the og epic, the samurai kernel, which overclocks my cpu to 1.5 ghz, my gpu up to 400 mhz, and raises the framerate from the stock max of 56, to 72 fps. i also have the smooth scrolling mod and my system is completely ODEXed. i can put my epic toe to toe with a stock sgs II and hold my own with no problem. with voodoo color and sound, my phone looks and sounds better than any stock android device on the market, and that is no lie.
i would love to see some development on this device tho. it may not be the ideal platform to work on, its lacking in the hardware department, but it IS an android device and it IS easily rooted so there is definitely a way to make this little guy shine. i wouldnt get your hopes up for cm9 tho guys, i dont think this phone will have the capabilities to handle ics, but dont quote me on that. plenty of people said the epic would never get an official cyanogenmod or ever be able to transfer the file system from bml controlled rfs, ext3/4 to the mtd controlled yaffs, but here we are with a ton of mtd based roms and kernels, and an official, working cyanogenmod WITH WIMAX (another thing they said we'd never have)
what this phone needs, is some people to step up and start developing on it, the reason a lot of the devices are getting such great roms and kernels is because they have a dedicated, hardworking team of developers willing to help each other and share resources to better the device. im not an android genius, ut i will do my best to help. anyone who wants to start working on development for the score, let me know, lets see where we can start.

There is a guide to compiling CyanogenMod for the blade here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Compile_CyanogenMod_for_Blade
You'll need to create a device config for your ZTE Score that matches the hardware in the phone, a good starting point might be copying the blade device config & editing it. Device configs are in ~/android/system/device
You'll also need the kernel source code. This should've been supplied with your phone, or at least a written offer of where to get the source code, as it is GPLv2 licensed the source code is required to be released. However, this is ZTE & they don't care about pirating the Linux kernel, so you may need to hassle the retailer that sold you the phone, the network & ZTE (both China & USA) a lot to get it.

for all Score related things go to www.cricketusers.com
We are trying to get CM7 up and running but need help.
If I am breaking forum rules by posting the website I apologize.
Also, they have beta/alpha ports of ICS for phones a LOT less powerful than the Score. Example: T-Mobile Comet/Huawei U8150

New Cyanogen ROM, differences for Hero CDMA?

I'm new to Android but not new to Linux and wondering what is necessary to get these ROMs (and others) working on the CDMA Hero. What are the major differences, proprietary drivers? Kernel modules?
New Cyanogen ROM, just released
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567610
In other words, what's stopping us from running these ROM's right along with G1/Dream users?
I'm curious also... would love to try his roms...
Since Android 1.6 was supposed to add CDMA support I would think they should work as well as 2.0 unless the developers have taken the cdma support out of the code in their roms to shrink the size to fit on the G1's.
If I had a Hero I would be giving it a try most likely. I might try picking one up this week since Best Buy has them down to $99. I just wish it had a keyboard.
I'll try when I get home from work.
On a side note, even if this rom doesn't work, I should be able to boot into the recovery rom no matter what... riiiiiiight?

Correct! The recovery image isn't touched by normal ROMS typically.
I'm tempted. Can this be applied right over the MoDaCo ROM?
I have tried a couple things with these. I tried flashing it outright. Wouldnt get past the initial htc boot screen. So I replaced the kernel in the boot.img of Cyans rom with ours, that still didnt work. Then I tried replacing the entire boot.img and still no boot working. I think Donut uses the 2.6.29 kernel or whatever it is. Ours is .27 so I think we would need to recompile the .29 kernel and pray our drivers work with it. Please, someone else try it too and see if they can get it working. I would love you forever if you could. If not, we will just have to wait until HTC gets us Eclair.
Thanks
Thanks for trying this, chuckhriczko and others.
I'm mainly coming at this from the pure Linux point of view: shouldn't these ROM's run anywhere (barring proprietary bits)? Shouldn't we be able to "share and share alike" between platforms, Hero/Dream/G1/whatever? If there is a chip architecture difference, fine then we need a recompiled kernel. Obviously there is also the question of firmware, but that's a given on all phones.
Otherwise, shouldn't these ROM's be fairly universal? Or if they are not, I'd like to know what makes ROM building such a unique endeavor for each phone.

I believe it's mostly the proprietary drivers for some of the hardware as well as needing a kernel recompile...once HTC releases the CDMA kernel, I'm sure we'll see a lot more (that or some genius will reverse engineer it...either way!)
The other thing to consider is that most of these ROMs are based on something...they take what's existing and tweak the heck out of it (I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of ROMs can trace their roots back to an official vendor image at some point).
I'm actually trying to setup a build environment and poke around but I'm starting from ground zero on the mobile platform side of things so I wouldn't hold out for me (and finding a Java 1.5 runtime is surprisingly hard these days ).
I'm noticing that we're seeing more and more ROM's pop up (primarily gutted ROMs focussed on eeking more speed as opposed to MoDaCo who went for more features).

What OS are you using? If your using a Debian based linux then you can get it from the Debian Lenny repositories. One word about this though, it killed my existing Java 1.6 so I had to reinstall it when I needed it. Otherwise that works.
And yeah, we are primarily doing gutted roms because that is all we know up to this point. It is very difficult to find help from those who know all about recompiling a kernel and things like that. Like I said, I couldnt get Cyanogen to even boot on my phone but obviously, it should at the very least do that. But only one dev on these forums ever helped me with my CDMA roms and that was Mlign from the Dream forums. Everyone else (understandably busy) ignored me. Im not saying anything bad about them but it's just harder for people to learn. Patience will give us what we desire though.

Huawei Ideos

Am I the only one excited by this phone? Looks pretty cool, and should be pretty nifty as a secondary device as well as for casual users.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/03/huawei-ideos-hands-on/
$100-200 off-contract price, capacitive screen, all the features of a "real" Android phone... all it needs now is a subforum here on XDA and a port of Cyanogenmod
What do you guys think?
+1, Xda section for that phone would be awesome.

I can hardly wait to see it in Europe.
It's a pity that there are no further information yet about possible providers, exact prices etc.
i'm also waiting for dev to make it rooted! hope xda would support it. it will be a cheap & fun toys to play with
This is the first phone that comes closest to bringing android to the power users who couldn't afford much more then the likes of e63 and e71 who come from countries where you buy the phone on full price..This has just been launched in my country and has been talked about a lot...the only thing stopping me to buy this phone right now is the community support I pray that xda developers understands the potential this phone holds and launch a community forum so I can be rest assured that I can find help.
Last time I frequented this forum was when I owned a pda2k and I held onto my pda2k not because it was so lovely but because I knew all my answers could be had at this forum.
I pray for the same enthusiasm this time around, please let me become a power user once again.
I have the Google / Huawei Ideos phone and loving Android. Would be great if we could get a howto about rooting this phone!
I just got this phone this weekend and upgraded from my (rooted, CM6.1-RC1) G1 that was giving me various kinds of grief and I gotta say, I'm not looking back. This thing is really responsive, has all the bells and whistles of 2.2 and is a really capable little device. My only problem has been the fact that some apps don't show up in the market because the device falls into the low-density small screen category of the market, and apps built against 1.5 or without a supports-screen in the manifest. I've been able to sideload apps that haven't worked without ill effect. I'd love to see root on this, just in case T-Mo decides to OTA remove the Froyo tethering love.
So the speed compares favorably to the G1 with Froyo?
Unless my G1 was acting really funky (which I can't discount, because it was being slow and crashy in recent weeks, even with a fairly fresh install of CM6.1) it's been much more responsive than my G1 was.
EDIT: I'm a fairly hardcore android user, though I don't use any really graphics or super cpu heavy apps, but it's ran everything that I used to have trouble with on my G1 without issue, for instance I couldn't leave an audio app running in the BG, it would end up either dying to getting killed off my the android system.

No one will ever develop a custom Windows Mobile ROM for this device. This may only happen if Huawei will launch a Windows Mobile device based on the same (or on a very similar) platform, and that's highly unlikely.

[Q] Is the Galaxy S future-proof enough to trade my Moto Milestone with?

[or, is there any budget device which is more future-proof?]
So, I recently sold my ZTE Blade to buy a (used) Motorola Milestone and payed something like 50 euros more than the price I sold the Blade for.
I got, though, quite disappointed by the phone's performance. RAM was full even when no real-world applications were running. The phone lagged and I thought this was an issue with the default ROM, so I flashed an aftermarket ROM. I still stood no chance. Performance was horrible and when I found that the bootloader is locked down I was even more disappointed. It seemed like a waste of money to me.
The bootloader being locked down is a bad thing. It also means that the phone can't have any future. At all. Also, all the drivers are closed source and can't really be applied to custom ROMs. It means it won't have any version above 2.3.7 too.
So, no ICS for me. I was really expecting it. What really dragged me down afterwards was that everyone said the phone is OLD. OLD? Can you believe it? I had just bought it and it was old? I think this is the worst buy I've ever made.
After all now, I'm quickly looking to replace my Milestone with a future-proof phone. When I say future-proof I really mean it. So, in my head future-proof means:
- ability to run Android 4 and even Android 5 when it gets released
- unlocked bootloader
- available kernels; last version of Linux would be appreciated
- good enough CPU and GPU
- much available RAM
After looking at the forums all I can say is that Galaxy S has the following:
- unlocked bootloader
- available Linux 3.0 kernel
- running Android 4
- 1GHz CPU
- no more Samsung support (no stock ICS)
And that's all I really know. I'd be genuinely interested on what you believe about the future of the phone and if it will be worth buying.

No phone at all is future proof.
No one can tell you if any current phone will run, android 5. No one even knows what that is yet, or what power would be required to run it.

Anything that's out now SHOULD run, but without an official or leaked ics rom from Samsung, you're just hoping ported ics roms are ported correctly.
But at this point, without official drivers for ics for the i9000, it's hard to give a concrete answer. At least, until the Nexus S rom is officially available and given the i9000 love from developers. Seeing as it's the closest thing to the sgs.

[Q] Kernel update/modification

I finally decided to ask a question that's been bugging me for a few days now, with all android development going around in a very impressive pace.
Now I am completly new to kernel concept so don't me too harsh if I said something wrong.
The question: Isn't there really a way to modify/update our kernel since we have locked bootloader?
As far as I understood, most of us are running ICS UI on top of GB kernel (even some on top of Froyo kernel) but this does not give us the advantage of running ICS on it full force and take full advantage of your harware.
I know Endless7 had a method to downgrade kernel, and I thought may be there can be a similar way to upgrade it.
With JB just around the corner, that would be a great improvement IMHO for our device.

Thanks for the reply. I do realize that and as Moto stated clearly that MS2 will not see official ICS there is not hope to get it from Moto.
But I thought maybe it can be ported from other device, or some modules, which share same CPU.
I am pretty sure our devs have looked into this but since we even got HWA working lol anything is possible these days.
There is a new bootloader hijacker called kexec which allows loading custom kernels. Hashcode is doing it for the Droid 3, and if I'm not wrong, it's designed specially for Motorola Phones with locked bootloaders. But you have to implement new drivers for video and such, so it's a lot of work.

The problem is that it's not *only* a "same cpu" problem, it's the whole hardware solution.... camera, sound, gpu, and so on.
It's one of the reasons the dev on MS2 is so "slow", with the locked bootloader, non support from Motorola, the multiple versions (Droid2/Droid2 Global, MS2 EU/CH/NA and so on), getting the hardware to work (specially with newer android like ICS/JB is/was a pain, and most of the work was done "porting" those from the Defy/Atrix and so on who have, somewhat, partially the same hardware and can be adapted.
On top of that, changing the kernel as already said would mean to find a security flaw/hole in the bootloader that could be exploited for that.
(the downgrade solution was patched/fixed with the latest european, and now Latin America bootloader/kernel upgrades if i remember well, hence why most europeans who upgraded to the latest OTA don't really have a working CM7, since it requires to flash fixed sbf and other things to make it work (a patched recovery partition i think)).
But really, having the dev (forgot his name, danthingyabak ) getting full HW acceleration, and a working ICS port and pretty much everything working now, while LA and China starts getting remotely the same versions, we might see more develeoppement coming, since it's no longer "region specific" devs. Maybe even one day Droid 2/Droid 2 Global and MS will share the same developpements, who knows (or, maybe by Miracle, now that Google owns Motorola, maybe one day we will see unlocked bootloaders for all phone yeah i'm dreaming ).
What about us now?!

[Q] New Owner of Transformer TF300T

Hi everyone, great threads on this forum and it's helped guided me with a lot of questions that I've been facing.
So my wonderful gf bought me this tablet as a surprise last week, I've greatly enjoyed it.
But I'm still a little tossed up on it, the experience with the tablet has been mixed.
At times it's great speedy, responsive, and probably providing me with the best first time experience with a Android based tablet.
Other times not so much, I do understand this is a year old tablet, not the latest and greatest (as far as the RAM goes, display can be a little better but still awesome). So at times it would be sloooooooooooow, and chuggish.
I remember reading on the forum somewhere forgot who posted it, but they were comparing a Samsung Note/Galaxy to this and it's night and day at times, games would be running a lot more smoother on those units then this one. (which I've come across when I was showing off to my cousins and they had a Note, showoff failed)
So I just have a couple of questions and maybe you guys can all help me with a few suggestions.
Is this table worth keeping? Or do I wait for the next generation of the Transformer to come out?
Should I root/custom Rom for a better experience? But then again, shouldn't a brand new out of a box tablet give me that optimum experience already?
I've searched and read multiple threads and it's given me somewhat of a direction.
But waiting for a brand new tablet with Tegra4 + more RAM otw could also be more worthwhile.....
My gf paid retail value for this tablet (which is pretty steep up in Canada 500$?), so I'm just trying to see what would be the best...either I return and wait up? or Root/Rom and try the new experience.
I know I've been a little vague, but I really don't know what else to add as I'm still a FOB (fresh on the boat :fingers-crossed with Android Tablets.
I guess, am I expecting too much out of a unit that is a year old?

Welcome on board, I've had the same experience like you with the tablet so I am going to provide you with some thoughts of mine, there is also a thread called "would you buy this tablet again" somewere.
I'd highly recommend using an app called clean-master it's basically Androids counterpart to the famous CCleaner on a pc, whenever the tablet feels slow/laggy run it.
The display is ok, but like you said it could and should be brighter with a higher PPI but since it's more of a budget tablet Asus had to cut costs somewhere.
Better experience:
Rooting and flashing a custom ROM would be a good way to get a way better experience out of this thing. After receiving mine baack I've installed Paranoid 3.99 althoug it's not the official release it is very stable, responsible and offers a lot of customization options, stock Android ones are heavily lacking. You can also overclock this thing without any worries for example mine is running at 1,5 ghz right now and the experience is way better then before although for most of my stuff already to fast, since I am only doing notes, browsing and emailes on my tablets.
If I were you, I would wait for the TF 701 release:
Screen: 300ppi 2560 x 1600 resolution
inside: 2 gb RAM 1,9 ghz Tegra 4 cpu
according to Asus it will cost 499 $ with an included dock station, like all Asus tablets it offers an SD slot hopefully on the tablet and the dock
If you are looking for even more power the next note from Samsung might be worth a look, the screen quality will be the same but it comes with powerful 3 GB of RAM, so perfect for multitasking if you need it the downside is Samsung is looking at a 699 $ pricetag.
Hope that helps and welcome aboard

I've been following that thread Is it still worth buying this tablet extensively, it's been very very informative.
From what I got after reading that thread is that a lot of people are happy with this tablet.
I've decided to keep this tablet for now, and if/when the next generation one does come out, maybe I'll pawn this off and hopefully get that one.
Would you guys be able to guide me into which thread might have a list of roms that I may find that may be suitable for me?
As well as which information you would need from me to help you with a selection.
Thank you guys.

Personally I am still undecided in terms of waiting for the TF 701 or even the next generation, if Asus does I can see them packing it with 4 gig of RAM and then we can really talk about multi tasking but the TF 701 looks really great from what I've seen and read so undecided.
In terms of ROM I am big fan of Cyanogenmod and Paranoid, both are offering great customization options, superuser abilities right from the installing and of course a much smoother experience than stock Android.
Paranoid has an unofficial 3.99 (Android 4.3) build currently and Cyanogenmod is offering Nightly builds, since both aren't official releases some things might not work yet but they are for the most part stable. I would manually install them and use a tool like goomanager for flashing/updating the ROM if available.

I'm a little torn as well....the TF701 does look amazing spec wise...I'm still contemplating if I should return and grab that one....but my first tablet...kind of want to pop my Root/Custom rom cherry with this one as I've read great reviews about it from everyone on the forum so far. :good:
Is there a thread/site that you can kindly guide me to so I can take a look at these ROM's to see what they offer me and which one might suite me the best?
As well would I be able to retain the Asus Apps or would it be a clean slate ROM?
Still a little lost on some of these ROM options, and if I didn't like the ROM's is it possible to go back to factory defaults?
Thanks once again, much appreciated.

Things to make sure before doing that:
1. Use the right version for your bootloader of either Clock Work Mod oder Team Win Recovery Projects
2. Backup all your important apps with Titanium Backup Pro
Links Cyanogenmod, Paranoid is also known as AOSPA you can get it here they used to have an official website but can't find it right now also you are going to find a lot of versions including the newest in the Development section of this forum.
You can also use the GooManager to flash/update your ROMS, especially useful if you are using nightly builds for Cyanogenmod
as for the Asus Apps:
It really depends what you need, personally I've done a full app backup and only restored the ones I sometimes use such as livebackgrounds, if so mething important is still missing I'll just restore it using Titanium Backup
Going back to your "usual Asus ROM" is rather easy:
Just use CWM or TWRP and select the Restore option
Before installing a new ROM:
Do a davlik/system/cache/data wipe, I would not recommend to wipe the whole internal or external sd card because all your data will be lost so be careful there
I am sure there are people who can give you a way better introduction on all the available Roms than me, since I am just stickong to the ones that work perfect for me and I am only having this tablet since may so good luck

Awesome!! :good:
You've been of great help.
I'll browse around those ones for sure and take a look and learn some more before doing anything.
Are there any other steps I would need to do prior to flashing a rom?
I've been reading unlocking the unit before flashing the ROM? Not too sure what that is about.
As usual Thanks!

Glad, I've helped you
Steps you need
1. rooted tablet just search for motorshoper here - just subscribe to the thread it's an awesome tool to get superuser "root" access
2. download the bootloader unlocker from the Asus webpage
should work flawlessly if you aren't sure, about having root rights use an app like root checker
be aware always make sure to read the steps carefully and only download the right TWRP or CWM version for your bootloader. Also search for potential problems before atempting to downgrade versions, without having a working backup this way you are going to save yourself a bit of time and trouble.

Thats part of the fun when you are using custom ROMs there are tons outthere and thanks to the former mentioned tools trying them out and see if they fit you, is easy.
Can't wait to change my blackberry so I can enjoy custom Roms on my handy too.

Gasssps Blackberry?
I'm on the iPhone 4 so I shouldn't be saying much..
Question - any reason why I would go with a nightly build over a RC/S build?

Well I love their keyboards but the lack of custom roms and superuser rights is very disappointing,.at.least you can jailbreak the iPhone.
The differences are as follows:
Nightly builds are less stable and some things might not work right now but they include newer features
Stable/RC builds are more stable and most if not all features are working flawlessly
so which build to use will fully depend on what you want, if you are looking for the newest 4,3 features nightlies are the one to go, if you value a stable and feature complete build more I'd go with a RC/S type. The middleway would be to choose a monthly build sadly there aren't any available for CM right now.

Hmmm I'll look into those again and see
I'm having a problem right now...
I got CWM installed fine (I Think)
The problem I'm having is when I go to choose zip from sdcard, it won't mound the sdcard or the internal
So I'm stuck...I can't seem to root it now.

Have you done it, in the correct order? First you need to add the ROM, then "add more Zips" select the gapps file
I've had the same problem with the external SDcard so I moved it to the internal one and it worked, but sorry no clue why it doesn't work with an external one

Here are my steps
1. Unlocke downloaded from Asus site
2. Downloaded CWM
3. Fastboot loaded CWM
After that I logged onto the Recovery
Tried installing from SDcard to root
But can't detect, another thread a nice gent, has given me the pointer to try to use TWRP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446177
So I'm going to give that a shot and see if that helps me out more.

Have you installed the .blob or .img file?
If you are using TWRP there is also a tool called TWRP Manager: so you can normally boot your tablet with it, start the manager make all the settings and it will automatically reboot your tablet into recovery mode.
Personally I have tried CWM and TWRP liking TWRP better too.
Another step you can check:
Go into Goomanager - Settings and look for the default "save folder" if you are having your .zip files in another folder make sure, to put them into this directory. Usually it's something like goomanager/Roms/ or so.

So I have TWRP installed, man all I can say is that it is night and day in the steps of setup.
So much easier and direct.
I've downloaded goomanager I'm taking a look at it now and seeing what I can do.
I'm running Cromi-X right now and browsing no longer lags, I'm content.
Wondering what else I can do now.....

Something I'd highly recommend:
check the app privacy rules and remove all the permissions most apps shouldn't have i.e using your location, reading SD or contact lists
personally I have also overclocked my tablet it is running at 1.5 ghz now could go as far as 1.7 but I am very happy with the performance so far
another cool thing most custom roms provide is the ability to customize your lock screen.
