Any chance of having the Nook Color Tablet OS on the original Nook Color?

Isn't the 1.4 update that is coming out the same thing?

I don't know that is why i'm asking.

Not 100% sure, but I do think the NC will get 1.4

No. No one is going to take apart the tablet o/s and port it to the color.

Really? Like for sure all knowing patruns?

You can run a Lincoln with a 4 cylinder but I wouldn't brag about it.

You are welcome to head up a project, but I'd bet my first born that none of the regular devs are going to be interested in doing it.
And your sarcasm is duly noted......

As patruns has said, the two devices use different processors, have different partitioning setups, and different memory configurations. As the nook tablet is only $250.00 (the original price of the nook color), I would say that if you wanted the functions of the nook tab, buy a nook tab.
While it might be possible to port it, there is no need.

Honeycomb on Evo? Its on nook

Hey everyone, so Honeycomb is on Nook Color, now is the current interface tablet specific?
Edited for lunacy and irrational thought.
Uhh why is my name on this? Don't put me in your mix buddy, i've never even talked to you before.

The nook guys have a half baked barely functional rom based off the sdk.. Trying to develop off that would be almost completely fruitless until the real source code comes out

more than we got atm
Honeycomb booted onto a phone doesn't even work properly. The launcher FC's, the settings menu doesn't look right, and all the cool Honeycomb stuff is deactivated. What's the point? That build was made for tablets.

What???? "More then we got" Are you serious?? You want to swap our currently STABLE, WORKING, TWEAKED roms for a half-baked barely functional port?? you've got to be joking.
The thing is, the nook doesn't have to function as a primary phone(for me and lots like me), it doesn't have to have working 4g, etc. phones(i would guess) take a little more work then an ereader-turned-tablet.
P.S. not at all trying to put down the guys that are working on the nook. i'm as impressed as the next guy. just trying to put these wishes into perspective.
i think what cheesynutz was saying is that the port of honeycomb for the nook is further along then the port for evo.

[Q] Full version android?

I read that Fire will have a stripped/modified version of android. Would the devs eventually be able to load the full version of android on to fire? Right now I'm paranoid by the possibility of having limited usage due to the modified version of android.
Its got the Amazon interface, but it will be running over 2.3
Plus, amazon has said they will not stand in the way of rooting the device, so its very likely that within a month or so some ROMS will be out for it.
Speculators say that the specs have potential for Android 3.0
512MB of RAM = kinda sucks.
Same as in ipad 2
Samsung Galaxy S Dos indeed
Honestly. I'm more worried about ice cream sandwich than honeycomb.

Completely different OS with a significantly different style of memory management. Apples and oranges.
Yeah but 512MB certainly isn't lacking, especially considering it's a device that's under $200. It would've been hard to put in any more and keep it at that price point. Also ICS is supposed to be pretty memory efficient.
Once its able to be rooted and loaded with custom roms I'm buying three. One for me and one for each of my kids. IM getting an Htc Flyer for the wifey.

A little caution here might be in order. The android devs are a wickedly creative crew BUT...until the AF is rooted (consistently) I would NOT presume it can or even will be!
Note how the Transformers were rootable up to the later B70 models. Then after that....nada so far. It's all about the SDK, bootloader, etc.
Wait and see if the AF can be rooted is all I say.
EDIT: Disregard.
i hope it has full android

No its a heavily modiefied 2.3 android. And putting full android ob there will break the cloud storage one has, and 6gb is not enough to have all the apps you want.

Developers

How many people with custom rom/kernel/recovery development are buying this? I'd like to get one, but I'm afraid that I'll get something with no dev support. This'd be sweet with CyanogenMod on it. So, chime in if you see this.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I would assume that this will sell better than the Viewsonic G tablet by a good margin, and the GTab has good support.
I'm not a developer but glad to see someone else from the epic forums eyeing this. I have been fighting in my head over this or a $200 ebay touchpad. Since tbe touchpad almost has cm7 I'm tempted but this has the 7 inch screen I want. Tough decision.

Its either this or nook color for me. But, this needs devs for me to get it.

The nook is tempting but I want something that will ultimately be faster than my epic and I think only a dual core will do. It shouldn't be hard for the devs that get this since its already running a highly modified gingerbread install.

There is no guarantee the Fire cannot be rooted. Until that happens we can forget about a custom rom. Until then, I would only order the Fire if you want an Amazon book reader.

Well it has already been rooted and all the normal google apps are running on it. I would guess it will now only be a matter of time before we get custom Roms.
So have you placed your orders yet?

Also, users have gotten the market working on the device.
I'm not going to be anywhere near a traditional computer for a few days. Any word on an apk downloadable to the fire directly to root?

Kindle Fire on Nook Color

Hi developers...I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right section, and forgive me if I am...as you know the kindle Fire system dump has been out... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1295928&page=3 . It has been ported to the Samsung galaxy tablet ... http://gigaom.com/mobile/so-i-turned-my-galaxy-tab-into-a-kindle-fire/ ... I was wondering if this can be done on our nook colors ...If a developer can do this...it would be awesome...I would try if I knew how to.. thank you in advance..and once again I'm sorry if I posted in the wrong section

Not really a big job considering its based on the AOSP source. In all reality its just porting the main launcher onto the code. You can use all the proprietaries from cm.

why not, just cause you dont want to have it doesnt mean others will, its all about choices when it comes to android and the more choices we have the better our experience will be
I'd do it...if only to show the flexibility of the NC. Still have no interest in actually BUYING a Kindle Fire though. Still enjoying CM7
I'm gonna try and port it through android kitchen (no guarantees though), this sounds like a great idea to me. Someone with more experience dev'ing should try it as well.
Any luck guys...the launcher on cm7 force closes for me

A bit off topic, but If your launcher is FCing, try launcher pro instead. It works for me on CM7 sd install, and rooted stock.
You could also try an older cm7 install.
As for the fire, I would play with it out of curiosity, but I like the rooted stock for everyday use.

I see, sorry. I was wondering how that would work.
Not knowing much about the system, would you need it to sync to the cloud? If yes, authentication could be a serious issue.
Does it allow non market installs, and can it go to the market?
I am not sure I would be interested if it cannot do these two things. If it could, it may be amusing, but it would have to be silky smooth for me to consider it a prime OS. Since the hardware is significantly slower on the nook, I am betting it is a no go, but that is just conjecture.

The work done actually looks like a port of the apks. The fires UI runs on top of the galaxies UI so CPU and all that doesn't matter. It's just implementing the framework that's the problem.

Ubuntu Touch for the TF300 - Possibly a BOUNTY?

Well, one step at a time. First get it to work, then dual boot is the next step.
Finally, it might be possible to run them "together", for example running CM apps in Ubuntu Touch.
I mean by transforming the base Android system into a fully-fledged CM and connect it up to Ubuntu.
Not sure that is feasible yet, but there might be a chance. And it is sure a while down the road.

I don't think that's possible because none of the Java code is in Ubuntu mobile.

Well, not now. Once we have achieved dual boot, all the Java code will be back there.

Really disappointed that it's only a "skin" on top of CM10.1, proper ubuntu is what we need, to actually run linux apps but still, every advancement is positive but I'm not interested in another android port, I like jelly bean as it is, AOSP ftw.

It's not running on top of CM10.1 is running on top of the CM10.1 kernel (and some drivers for the hardware) and I wouldn't say it's fair to call that a "skin". That's like calling every linux distro a linux skin.
true, my frasing is wrong but it doesn't change the fact that it's not capable of running linux apps, it's just another take on android, and on a tablet such as this I'd love to be able to dual-boot into android/linux, let's see where archlinux will take us but with the way things are changing and people upgrading to newer devices this will be left behind as well eventually, and to think that since the first quad core device a year ago today we call the tegra 3 a low-powered chipset compared to the powerhouses coming out, and people still don't have a quad core cpu at their home pcs and laptops, anyway, offtopic, let's see...
as far as I heard from many different people now it is just something to show the skin as main features like wallpaper, rotation and others aren't working yet although they should... Basically I would prefer a dualboot solution with stock ubuntu and android, but just my personal opinion...
