Amazon apps... - Fascinate General

i dont know why i need 3 office suite apps but if amazon keeps offering free apps for them ill take them. in doing research on these prices. the prices we see are "sale" prices which come too $45 if you got all 3. but its more like $65-$70 if you were to pay full retail on these apps. in all amazon gave me almost $400 in free apps since its start.
Edit: the app today is just the key and you dont not need to download the full/main app from amazon you download from android market and it will work.

I concur
Has anyone seen John Connor?

I think they're buying downloads and reviews to prep the Amazon market in time for Kindle Fire users.
We win whatever they're doing!

Not sure why they're offering them, but I'll snatch them up.
Anyway, I need to accumulate 10 posts to become active in the dev. forum, so I'm just going to say Hi in a bunch.
Hi, everyone. I've been on AC for a while, but need to get more active here.

Readers Hub...finally!

Opened up the Readers Hub today, just to check if it was working yet, and was welcomed by two little green 'install' buttons on both the magazines and newspapers option. These buttons open up a Samsung modified app installer, and now...it's all working.
This is in Switzerland, running an unbranded unlocked 16GB SGT on Swisscom Liberty Grande contract.
EDIT: Ok, my excitement is growing less by the minute. While it works nicely, it seems there's no free content, neither in Newspapers nor in Zinio. Even the free papers that you can pick up at every bus stop around here (20Minuten) want to charge you. Not interested in paying for news when I can just use the the browser to read the online version for free.
EDIT 2: Right, it seems when you go through the Zinio website there's an option to search for free issues, and there's quite a few good ones there. No such option on PressDisplay however.
hm, still waitin...buy the way tnx for report
Just checked mine here in the UK and was greeted with the install buttons
Thanks for the heads up.

Just showed up for me today in Australia too.
Installed and bought a few issues through Zinio already.
Running well so far except for one of my subscriptions having problems downloading.
Got to laugh, daily star which costs around 35 pence or maybe less for a hard copy is costing 99 pence per issue. Not tempted to go digital at that price, just going to do the usual and fire up the car on a morning and buy it

Please post a link to working aol if available.

Zinio is great value, as a UK magazine reader being able to subscribe to US versions of magazines for around $10 for a years subscription is superb value to me! (They look great on my iPad, hoping they look just as good on my RoadWarrior SGT!)
With PressReader, if you have an online subscription to The Times (about £9 a month) you can download the Daily and Sunday editions (+All the extra magazines), perfect for my commute!
The readers hub was a huge deciding factor for me in buying a SGT, Im looking forward to trying it out once I get home today!
i have the tmobile tab and i don't even see the readers hub app. How can I get it?
too bad zinio is mostly usless for non-english ppl. I don't get why we get kobo and zinio but no media hub in europe.

Also in the UK. Works fine
PS: free samples can be added to your Zinio account via the web interface. Then use the app to read the content.
Note: By the way, my Galaxy Tab is flashed with the latest P1000XWJK1 firmware (November 2010). I don't think this would make a difference, as the Samsung App Market functions normally (I see 2 apps in there).
WTH? So I just lost access to my FHM subscription on the galaxy tab. Even the issue that I had downloaded earlier today had magically vanished.
Can't even see similar magazines through the tab any more.
I hope this is isn't some kind of iPad compatibility issue... What with it being two competing devices with different philosophical views on censorship.
can someone post the zinio apk. in my hub, i installed the kobo one
Here in Finland in Tab there is Readers hub with PressDisplay, Kobo and Zinio.
PressDisplay gave some freebies.
In Kobo there is about 200 free books to choose.
Zinio, no freebies.
About PressDisplay; the biggest newspaper in Finland, Helsingin Sanomat is missing, only 11 smaller ones available. And yes, those free trainstation-takeaway-b****-publications cost also 0,99€ -no thanks.
First I was exited, but not any more. Newsroom is still my killer app.
Greediness kills a lot good ideas.
PressDisplay and Zinio now online in the Philippines. Finally!!!!

Do Developers get paid for selling apps on ANDROID market?

Ive noticed apps on the Market that says, FREE (with ADS) and also PAID / Pro Version of the same app (for a fixed price lets say £3.00)
Now ive noticed the count on download apps for a app that is £3 to be 250.000 > downloads ... which means £750.000 has been paid into the market just from this single app ?????
How much would the developer of this app see from the £750.000 that has been made? And am I also right that ADS on their software also let the developer gain money??
Seems to me you can earn a lot of money for a well populated app... ???
You answered your own question. Developers SELL (obtain money for their product) their apps. Free apps that include ads, the developer also gets money. It's just like youtube videos.
Surely Google must take commision as well??
Yeah, that's the goal
But face it, people are cheap...even for a $0.99 app! And that "super duper, can't live without it app" is all so elusive.
So developers will put out a limited or crippled version of their app for free in hopes that people will buy the full version.
Oh yeah Google takes their cut; it's pro-rated on the number of app sales you have.
Lookiing closely at other apps and focasing on one partiuclar app called Fotmob which I have purchased. It is a really good app that is for any football supportors out their giving details of a list of attributes such as, Live Scores - Fixtures - News - and Table..... Its probably the best football application Ive bought.
Now focasing on a a certain point on the development part of the app
1) Live Score's ... Gives a list of live playing games and their score line next to it. - Am curious on where the data comes from? Surely it isnt edited As games are played because that would be practically impossible to keep up to date therefore it must use a similar command such as a Fetch_arrey syntax. Now where would the user of FOTMOB Fetch the data from?? it must be a reliable known source such as BBC SPORTS / SKY SPORTS to keep its app up-to-date during the live games??
Is that right?

It's not as black and white as that.
Firstly, you'd have to be an brilliant developer to get 250k+ downloads from a paid app. If you see an app like that, 9 times out of 10 it will be a company, not a single developer.
Secondly, 250k downloads is the amount of times an app has been downloaded, not the amount of times people have paid for it. e.g., around 40% of those downloads will be from people who refunded.
and lastly, Google take a ridiculous amount of money from you for each sale.
For example, my app sells for £2.00, but google takes £0.60 of that. It might not seem like a lot but it mounts up quickly.
So, 250k downloads isn't as much as you think if you start to look into it (but, it's still a hell of a lot for a single developer to get!!)
Well said Mellus.
And some of these so-called "great" apps are just fancy front ends pulling data off the net or a RSS feed.
As you might gather, I do not have a lot of respect for "this" (or "self"...programmer humor) type of developer.
P.S. if you don't get the programmer humor, "self" is Mac Objective C's "this" pointer.

You make $1,500 off how many apps? How many installs. Free apps or paid?
Also, could someone comment on what's required to get started? I know there's a $25 dev fee, and I've read all the help text on the publish site.
What do most devs do for a website to link to in the market? Does Google offer anything? Use Go Daddy? What?
What do you use to create the graphics required for the market?
Other tips?

Yeah I'm just getting into app development as well. I've currently got an ADWTheme out on the market for $0.99, and I make ~$0.69 per sale. There is really a ton of potential for profit if you get into individual app development as long as you can make stuff that people want. When I first released my theme I was making ~$10 a day off of it. after a month or so it's died down to ~$2.5 - $5 daily, but another factor is that I haven't updated it in a while haha. If you can manage to keep all of your apps up-to-date and appealing, you will do well.
If you are really interested in developing applications for android I would recommended watching these videos: http://marakana.com/techtv/android_bootcamp_screencast_series.html They've seriously helped me out a LOT getting off the ground

I would recommend Adobe Illustrator more than Photoshop for making graphics, at least it's what I prefer.
1. Make it look pretty
2. Make it fart
Yeah, nice LOL. Hey, if it sells, it sells. Wish I could write an app that sells thousands
I'm only a few months into development though, so it's "learn something new everyday" process. As the coding skills build, so will the quality of the apps....and hopefully sales.

Don't know why it's so difficult to answer a simple question.
70% goes to the developer, the remaining 30% is distributed to the cell carrier (if the carrier is authorized to receive fees for apps purchased on the market.)
Wikipedia explains it in such a way that even the most simple minded of folk can understand. It sounds like a few of you should read up on that, as opposed to providing vague, meaningless "answers".

you need to buy it on your PC or phone first before it can be downloaded to the TF.. purchase on the TF gives a 'device not supported' error.
The game itself is playable..much like the amazon version of PVZ..but the graphics are not optimized for the tablet..

This is an issue with Peggle, not amazon apps.

installed it in my xformer just fine. and its not for tablets really, the resolution for this game is def for phones, however it does fill the screen
I downloaded Peggle from the amazon app store and installed it on my rooted Milestone. Much like plants vs zombies it loads up and crashes after loading the logo and hourglass. Using the same apk I've got it working on a galaxy Vibrant and captivate. Could it be because my phone is rooted or is the milestone just not powerful enough to run it?

Kindle fire camera

Sorry if somebody has already brought this up, but after searching I didn't find anything. I just got my fire laast night and there appears to be a camera in the top left corner. I know all the specs say there is no camera, but there does in fact appear to be one. Can anyone else confirm?
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium
I think that's just the ambient light sensor. The first firmware had support for automatic brightness, but that was removed, so it's essentially useless now.
Not a camera.
Just a sensor, nothing to do with a camera. Never saw a camera in the tear down thread so I am pretty sure it isn't one.
Ah, I see. Got my hopes up for nothing, then. Thanks.
Kinda sad that its not in there considering the cost of camera components now a days.
Yah I know so sad. Cause from the tare down it seems that it would have cost only 10.50 or something i know i read that somewhere for a front and back camera. But I still love this thing

Amazon loses money for every Kindle sold; it currently costs them more to make then they get for selling it. Their only income is the money they get from their bundled services such as music, books, video rentals, prime, etc. Why would Amazon encourage a custom rom that debundles those services...while spending even more money on it?
They only lose something like $2....it isn't all that high honestly...

Well if that's the case it would have been nice for them to opt for a camera, but then again my phone (HTC Incredible) has something like an 8 MP camera in it anyways.
But you gotta think even then most companies something off each tablet they sell. Amazon's approach actually seems similar to a video game console maker's approach. Generally Sony and MS both lose money on launch Xbox and Playstation units, but hope to make that up in game sales. If Amazon's loss is that small they should easily make that back.
Very true...but how many do they sell and never even sell an mp3 on? Losing even 0.20 is a risk...adding even more functionality would have widened that loss. And to be honest...how many people the but the kindle want it simply for the purpose it was built? Only a rare group will actually root it and load custom roms.

Yeah, that's why Amazon can do it in the first place though. They have established themselves as a one stop place for many of the Kindle Fire buyers. I know that I pick up lots of stuff at Amazon. There is a risk, but if it truly is around $2 then that's likely made back with one sale. I plan to get mine rooted, etc but I will still buy legit stuff like Kindle books from Amazon.

Right, but if all those people buy a $5 book that's theoretically $25 million right there. Pretty sure Amazon will come out on top in the long run.
Amazon knows what they're doing - this is not new to them. The initial 3g Kindles were in the same boat - they cost more to make and maintain than they sold for.
The cam can be worth 2 $, but if you calculate 5mil. X 2 $ than the loss would be 10 mil. ...and if the managers cannot think of improvement in Kindle fire 2 – they can always build in mic and cam and make revenue

You think Amazon gets 100% of the profit from a $5 book or app? No, they only take a percentage.
I'm guessing they didn't expect the Fire to be as popular as it has become. An extra $10 million would of possibly made it too risky

3 of the apps are at least productivity apps and 1 is a live wall paper app. Google usually refreshes the list with these sales and throws a few repeats in there. At least some of the games look good - they usually aren't all terrible.

Hopefully some pretty good ones to come. I think it will be going on for the next 5 days.
I have a feeling that this is Google's way of fighting amazon
Three of the apps today were previously free Amazon apps
I am glad to pay a quarter and get rid of the amazon app store apk and having to be on wifi or data network to use my "Free" apps
If the next days have more free Amazon apps, I will buy them as well, and feel it really is google vs amazon
i don't like the amazon webstore either.mostly the apps are a tiny bit cheaper but the store itself is really slow and overloaded.
I'm rebuying a few office apps that I got for free on amazon app store. Even having them for free doesn't make them worth having that battery hog installed.
