So I'm new to the whole rooting scene I have been studying these forums amongst other places anyway the real in depth stuff is over my head. I guess my real question is from someone who knows what there talking about, what's the progress on the perm root? What's the big obstacle now besides the obvious anti root thing and when may we see some results? Is this truly imposible or will we have a true perm root soon?

The progress is happening over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
Thanks this gives me more info than I had on what is devolping, but still doesn't answer the questions like when, and they way this guy is talking it sounds like this perm root may not happen

Please use the search and browse the forums. There are TOO MANY posts on this already... Duck, flaming incoming...
Maybe that's the problem to much stuff to sort through a lot of posts are nonsence anyway no sence arguing just thought a few good valid answers would be great then could be deleted for all I care but I guess that's to much to ask for on a [email protected] forum wow

Should it be possible w/o a smart card, it'll be ready when it's ready. People should know better than to ask devs for a release date when they're not directly employing them.

Way to add to this thread guys one good actual response the people complaing about multiple theads just fill them with junk trash talk on forums when people are trying to get answers doesn't sound productive to me. And why should I not ask about progress? That's offensive, what get off your high hourse if you can't answer a question just don't say anything. Why fill with crap no one thinks your cool by doing that

well... the OP isn't really being a "noob".. he's being a **** for not reading and posting these useless threads in the Dev Section.
Obviously hasn't read anything. he's like those babies that want to be spoon fed.
hey you know what? why don't you send your device to me, i'll root it and everything for you!
this isn't "noob" this is "baby"
noobs try their best to learn and get to the top. like i did (still learning now)
babies don't do anything searching/learning/reading and just want to be spoon fed.
anyway... have you checked the resource bible yet?? that really helps... and also read my guide for noobs in the General section...
XDA is so hostile now these days. At least answer the question if you're going to slam him.

Temp root is just temporary rooting the phone.. Usually after you restart your phone it goes away..permanent root is rooting your permanently..even after you shutoff or restart your phone it stays root.. Then you can install/flash custom roms etc..try looking at the guide resources bible.. And Google some terms you don't understand...also YouTube " root mytouch4g" look at as much videos as you can before you start doing anything...
Am guessing you have version 2.3.4.. Press menu..settings...about phone..software information...android version.. What does it say...
If it says 2.3.4 then you need to downgrade to 2.1 before you can before root your phone.
Also take time to read this....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866175
rooting and CFW
Haha, I remember being in your exact position, except i had to downgrade. But here's what I did bro. Follow this link: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier:_Full_Update_Guide. It will tell you all about rooting and downgrading if you have to. It's what I used to root my Glacier. DO NOT use any one click root apps or programs to root. ADB is probably the most secure and reliable way to root your phone. Make sure you are running Froyo, also. And as for the ROM, it all depends on your preference. In my view, there are three types of ROMs- Sense, Stock, and MIUI. Sense will most likely be 3.0 or 3.5, I like it because it is smooth and I love Sense. I would recommend using either Virtuous or CoreDroid. But then there is Cyanogenmod 7. It's the best stock Android ROM, full of tons of tweaks and mods. Last, there is MIUI, which is it's own thing. I use it when I get bored of Sense and CM7 because it's so different, that I feel like i'm not even running Android

I also used AAHK for my first root and my first custom rom was randomblame's JellyTime beta 6
One-click root utilities are always the best way to go for beginners, as well as the easiest.

Agreed! AAHK was just amazing. Makes rooting such a simple process =D
But normally you only have to root your Device once and so the aahk opens a big world with a lot to learn.
If it would be harder to root your DHD many would not do it, because they fear they can brick their phone.
I also used the aahk to root and now everything I read about ROMs and Radios etc becomes understandable for me, becaue I can do it in real.

Ok buddy.. All I'm saying is if he took the time he used to make this thread to read stickies, root guides and the q&a section he would be more prepared to mess around with his device with less risk of breaking it.

Welcome to the n7 forum, and boy what a welcome...... Unless you are comfortable with sending commands via adb use one of the root kits, they offer more than just rooting.
Not to many roms or mods to choose from, but everybody has that there on taste.
Like offers have said search and read, then ask in those threads if unsure.

wow, what a messed up welcome. this IS the Q&A section. We all have been new, most of us has messed up, even following directions.
So, Did your N7 arrive yet?
CleanRom is one of my favorites when I feel like running a custom ROM. Im back to 4.2.1 at the moment.
I think WUG's toolkit is pretty easy for a beginner.
If you really want to play though, learn how to use adb. It may be a learning curve for some, but its really easy and fast.
Of course, search is always your friend, but most of us will still be here to help out if you need it!
Enjoy the Nexus, its a blast!
Patience people .he is a virgin !!!!
Welcome to xda Nexus 7 forum and (i guess ) Newbie Target practice Zone.
I think the biggest advice anyone can give you. Is something people do not often say. Before you flash unlock root or change one app on your device. Learn the STEPS TO GO BACK. Make all the necessary backups. Follow all instructions. But only after you understand what they are doing to your device. Read The forums about the different roms . Especially user responses and comments on the different roms.
Most of all Learn your device . Learn recoverys and basic fast-boot and adb..
Backup Backup and know how to use your backup...
NOT TO MENTION BACKUP
again welcome to the fourm and please Backup read re read.. then think before you flash.
Erica Renee ..:silly:
He's right. What's good for some may not be good for others. I'll suggest a few things. Keep in mind these are what I prefer:
Mskips Toolkit. I love it. User friendly and easy to navigate even if you're not familiar with rooting. Offers an all in one option (option 8) that unlocks the bootloader, roots, installs busy box, installs your choice of custom recovery, and will recommend the 3.34 boot loader instead of using the built in supplied by Google. 3.34 keeps root more reliably than others for some. Its compatible with all versions, it will buy you dinner, and kiss you goodnight.
Again, my preference but I've had nothing but success with Mskips work.

Each app is different as are people's tastes in apps. You will have to decide what you need/want. Best app/ROM threads are not really allowed on XDA. You are required to research and find what you should use.

Like what was mentioned, be careful not to ask questions with "best mods/tools/apps/elephants/bananas for the <insert phone model here>". Mods won't like it.
However, these two forums should be able to help you:
1. General
2. App Dev
... and Google of course. Good luck.
Oh okay. Thanks alot guys for the positive feedback. I'll take a look.

If you have to ask this question why did you root in the first place? I ask that in all seriousness. You're risking bricking your device by rooting if you mess something up, why would you take that risk if you're not sure what root does.
pguillory -
The question you should ask is "Do I need root and what would I use it for?"
My easy first answer:
Titanium Backup.
ES File Explorer
(BTW, there really is very little risk bricking it if you use the easy method. Search forum for the thread.)
