Just a thought,
Is it possible to boot from SD card?
Can a bootable winXP or (vista) image be installed on SD? This will increase speed many folds.
would it give results similar to having SSD drive ?
Any thoughts guys?
I dont think you can choose the SD slot as boot device. Also, most SD cards are not so quick. And there is the problem with the limited write cycles. So you have to replace the card every once in a while.
there are similar options by a company called Photofast.
they have some products in this direction....
USB boot
Umm
is it possible the use USB device as boot option.
There are many USB devices out there who have minimalistic design.
if that can be done then that could be poorman's SSD.
of course then no other USB devices can be used. its still worth exploring if USB stick over 2.0 offer better speed.

Of course you can boot Windows Xp from a USB stick. It has all been done before.
But there is honestly no speed advantage, because the theoretical speed of the USB bus is limited by the stick. Also, do you really want to have an USB stick popping
out the side of your, already, chunky Shift?
but just for fun...you can take the HDD out and hardwire an USB hub PCB internally on Shift's USB port. then you just plug 2 USB sticks in there...should be plenty of space if you take their casing off. 16GB x2 gives you a 32GB flash disk.
I tried searching to see if this has already been discussed, but like all vBulletin forums, the search function rejected USB and Pen (as in pen drive) and a few other essential but three-letter words. So I found zero.
I have a 4 GB USB U3 thumb drive that I always carry with me--until I lose it, that is. I would like to load it up activesync (or not--whatever works) and a whole bunch of files I want to install on my HTC Touch Pro (AT&T Fuze). I have a short cable with a male mini USB connector at one end and a female regular-sized USB connector on the other (so I can slip the male USB thumb drive connector into the cable and thence connect it to my TouchPro).
I'm not sure whether this will work, but it seems like it should. This way, I can carry with me all of my files-to-be-installed and work on customizing my fuze anytime, anywhere. I don't want to store the installation files on my micro SD card because that wee thing holds soooo very little. (i have a 32 GB F card and a 32 GB SD card in my iP 211.)
For starters, I can't even figure out how to install Windows Mobile Device Center on the thumb drive--the process keeps wanting to mess with the AS/Winmobile Device Center already istalled (and used for another WM device).
Maybe there's a way to do with without AS or the Device Center. That's fine with me. All I care about is having access to the many, many apps I have waiting on the flash drive.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Sandra
Im no expert, but I dont think many devices have the capability for being hosts, meaning they cant have external memory devices attach except through the supplied card slot.
There are a couple out there which can handle it, but they normally come with a usb port built in. Otherwise I doubt its possible. I dont think its one of those things which can be programmed. Of course, I could be entirely wrong about it.
Edit: Ok, im completely wrong about it. I just found a web page through google saying that many devices with wm on dating back to Pocket PC 2002 do in fact have the ability to do it.
My bad. lol

What size do you have? They are currently available up to 16 gig, and 32 is coming. I keep all my cabs on my Sandisk 16. As for USB host, see the post above with the link to the thread. The chipset does not appear to support it. BTW, if you do a search on "USB host", you will find the thread.
I'm about to follow those links you guys recommended, but I wanted to say a quick thanks to you all. I didn't know anything about USB hosting, etc, and it's a whole lot easier to think anything is possible if you don't know anything than if you are well-educated. (OTOH, I suppose that that knowing might also inhibit experimenting which means you don't pursue new ideas. Hence the box we have to think outside of.)
Thanks again,
Sandra
I'd recommend a Trio adapter: Trio is not a brand name, just a mechanical name they have given this adapter. I had one made by A-Data and its awesome.
The adapter itself is an SD card that accepts a MicroSD on the side. However, the neat part is the fact that you can remove a piece and voila! you have a USB stick.
http://memoryworld.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=14&products_id=386 is the first hit from google. I bought mine from Newegg way back in the day. Sadly it was ran over when my phone was. The MicroSD card was good, but the adapter died. I am saving up to get the new SDHC version and a 16GB MicroSD card.
BE ADVISED: there are similar products out there called DUAL adapters: the memory is non removable in those. What that means is that there is no MicroSD card that comes out.
Enjoy!
As the title asks.. How much space would you say is actually inside the nexus 7? Is everything super tight in there?
Reason I ask is that I have an idea. I am wondering if there is enough room to stuff the internals of a really thin SD Card reader in there. If yes,
then the next question is there room to access the wires going to the micro USB port? The plan would be to solder in the wires from a OTG cable and run it to the Card reader.
So basically I am wondering if it's possible to wire in a card reader, run it as OTG and have a Nexus 7 with expandable storage..?
P.S. I don't have a nexus 7 and I ask because if this is possible I might as well buy the $199 8gb version and use the money saved to buy the parts needed to make this work. (if it's even possible)

Even if you could fit it in and wire it up, how you gonna write to it? If it's "hooked up" via the OTG cable you spliced into the existing cable to the Micro-USB port, it's a fair bet that the device will not "also" be able to connect USB to the PC at the same time. And this is assuming it were even possible to begin with for the device to write to an external SD Card via OTG directly. I know that the Flash or SD card can be pre-loaded with media PRIOR to being connected to the Nexus, but I I don't know if A: The Nexus can write directly to said card or B: it could so so while also connected to Windows. The first one someone who has an OTG cable can check easily enough. But that last one is impossible to check on a device that isn't already modded. Also remember that as far as Android is concerned, you already have an SD card. It's just virtual. Not sure how it would handle having two. Honestly I doubt this would work but you could always try.
As I recall - the Memo 370T did have an SD card reader.
From the IFixit teardown, the motherboard in the Nexus 7 is from the Memo 370T.
There is definitely a spot for the (removed) back facing camera, and as I recall
the SD pads are available. Of course, that might have been for HDMI, since the presenter units had an HDMI connector.
Have fun tearing your Nexus 7 apart - nothing is worth the risk to me.
I like my Nexus 7 as it is...

I've used OTG on my Nexus S and what it does is mounts the USB stick or SDcard as and external drive. So basically, yea you will have to go into the USB OTG app and mount the SD card to start using it. I never played around with it enough to see exactly how it works so maybe somebody with experience can fill us in with that.
I see your point about plugging in the tablet into the computer. But I don't see why it couldn't at least charge the device even if you mounted the SD card. I could be wrong, I am no expert.
I thought that the OTG app actually enabled you to use the internal sd and external USB storage at the same time. Somebody please clarify. So if that's true, then browsing, play videos/games/etc should work as normal. It will just treat it as another drive.
I don't know how it would work if you plugged it into your USB port on your computer with OTG enabled and the SD card mounted but like I said, maybe somebody who specializes in this can clear this up.
Hi just got my new nexus 7 and it's awesome but I got storage question.
I got the 32 gig and try to add some video s only to find that I quickly filled the damn thing. So I guess that I do need the USB otg, I have a 32 gig micro sd card and was thinking about buying a 64 gig card on cyber Monday.
So I have two questions:
Is there a difference in speeds between USB micro sd card readers?
Will the USB micro SD card reader limit the speed of the class 10 card?

hello mate, the speed is in the card not reader, use a class 10 card and that is all the speed you need otherwise the readers are pretty much all the same.
I am fairly sure the card reader itself has to support class10 (I suspect all modern ones do), and there is still the problem of the slowest part will still be the USB connection between card reader and the Nexus 7 - which is USB 2.0 (?) - although I'm not sure if class10 would saturate a USB 2 connection.
I would also try and get a mains powered one, not a USB powered one. I have 2 here and the USB powered one, with a wireless keyboard+mouse (Logitech MK520), + PS2 Joypad wired does cause a random reboot problem at times - possibly due to lack of USB power.
My mains powered hub is a cheap Xenta hub I got from Ebuyer and works a treat.

yeah I though about that but I will mostly be using this at the university and during rides and having an external hard drive kind of ruins the portability of a tablet and makes my laptop a better choice, but I want to play with my new toy!!!
I looked around the internet and from what I read is that usb 2.0 can go up to 37mb/s and even the SanDisk Ultra 64 GB MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card tops out at 30mb/s. however the microsd card reader can very in compatibility from just microsd to sdhc all the way up to sdxc so even though you dont need usb 3.0 for speed the only card readers Ive seen that support sdxc is the usb 3.0 ones (if you use any that don't know let me know. SDXC is the only format that can go above 32gigs
I think I'm going to go with Kingston MobileLite G3 Card reader i read this review legitreviews com/article/1977/1/ H
its pretty cheap and and I guess future proof.

How well do keyboards work on the Nexus? And do standard shortcuts like copy/paste work as their normal shortcut keys?

From my own testing, wired keyboards work best, just plug in and away you go. Wireless, I assume, will need Android to support the wireless adapter. I have the Logitech MK520, and the god-awful Microsoft Ergonomic 7000, and both worked fine with both the Keyboard and Mouse working well in Android 4.2. I also have a cheap USB mini keyboard I got from Amazon here,
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Leather-Keyboard-Compatible-Blackberry-PlayBook/dp/B008QBFFR8/ref=pd_ybh_2
Awkward because of the keyboard's cable + OTG cable sticking out, but it worked surprisingly well.
Just for completeness, I also tested a Xbox 1 & 2 wired Joypad, a Xbox Arcade Joystick, and a PS2 Wired Dualshock2, all worked well, especially in emulators that had hardware joystick options.
In the week I intend testing a couple of wireless adapters to try and better my internet connection from sat in bed - The router is located at the far side of the house and only gives me 2 bars.
Hope that helps.
Edit - Bloody Capchas. How long does this go on for ?
Instead of editing my post I thought I would post this to hopefully help anyone who is thinking of getting a OTG cable + keyboard + USB Hub.
This may have been my device, Android 4.2, a combination of my hub + keyboard + non-rooted Nexus 7, who knows, but I can reproduce this fairly easy.
Lets take a similar situation to what happened to me. I popped the Nexus in the wallet, connected up the keyboard, took it round a mate's house and showed him a 7" tablet and how it works. We surfed the net using the keyboard for typing websites, searches, forum posting. etc... I then went home, device is switched off with everything still plugged in. I unplugged the keyboard, took the nexus out of the wallet/case and switched it on but it didn't come on and I honestly thought I had bricked the device, or the USB port overloaded or shorted. Googled the problem and it turned out a few had similar problems and the answer was to hold down the power switch for 10, 15, 20, 30 seconds until you see the Google logo, the Nexus will then boot up.
Now I can reproduce this just like the above. For example, sit in bed, type this reply out on the keyboard, switch off the device, go and make a coffee, come back and switch on the device with everything unplugged and the Nexus will not switch on. No idea why, but every time I have to hold down the power button for at least 15-20 seconds. If I just switch back on the Nexus with the keyboard still plugged in then it works fine.
Now, thanks to someone on this board, I have now done a few backups of my device including the SDCARD, so I might unlock it + root it then try it again with the Nexus wiped clean and see if it still doesn't come on.
Like I said, it could be some bizarre hardware + software combo, or just hardware including hub, but I thought I would post this incase someone here switches on their device and it too doesn't come on.
hey gang, was wondering about getting some advice on what to do about my sd card...
i bought a sandisk micro sd with its adapter and figured id stock it up for when my s4 shows up... the thing is, it wouldnt mount to my macbook pro, mounted just fine to the macbook air, so i stocked it via file sharing...
but down the road? not really the way i would like to do it, the sd reader works fine on the pro, works with other sd cards...
my question is... in the best opinions, do you all think i should run to best buy, try out a different brand like PNY micro sd and adapter? or another sandisk and see if maybe its just this particular adapter...??
if they dont work, i can atleast return it then just buy the external reader... etc etc
thanks

It's probably the adapter, I've never had an issue with mine. another option is to get a usb adapter which is just what i use now

Reason I speculate adapter is because it works on one but not other.

you're right, it could just as easily be the port on your mac too, so it would still be cheaper to initially try another adapter
Apple store put another sd card, worked just fine... Bought another sandisk and a pny micro. Will test it out later. Hopefully one works.
just plugged in the new Sandisk 32gb micro sd, same exact copy, just a new one... mounted perfectly! that was easy...
