So pissed, dropped my phone! - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Went out for a friends birthday last night....had way too much to drink, I guess sometime last night I dropped my phone as I woke up to one of the corners being pretty bashed in, upsetting thing is I have a case that is in the mail right now! Looks like it took a good fall judging from the damage but the screen survived if that says anything.

Oh, that sucks! I feel for you, but at least the screen survived. But you know, the first scratch is the hardest. After that, it hardly bothers any more, so this could be a blessing in disguise, allowing you to go bareback (no case) without worrying so much about it. I'm a bareback guy; I can't stand even an extra millimeter of bulk on my devices.

Just annoyed that the case is in the mail, I don't even remember dropping it.

Thats crap Oh if you don't remember dropping it then maybe some jealous friend of yours purposely dropped it? xD

I learn 2 lessons to day
1. Don't get drunk
2. Find a rubber casing

Sorry to hear about that.
Hopefully a rubber case will hide the damage?
I have attached an attractive part-leather lanyard to my speaker grille that I loop around my wrist when I'm using the phone walking down a busy street.

Can you post a photo? It would be interesting to see what kind of damage it takes from a fall.

Have you got a photo?

Same thing happend to me.my note is just 3 days old.but i didn't drink top right corner little damage and lower right corner scratch.

Or you could bring a cheap Android phone when going on a drinking crawl.
I use a £50 Motorola Flipout, does almost everything the Note can do and have a physical keyboard which makes typing so much easier when I had few drinks in me.
Anyway to OP feel your pain, and we all done it with our phones. At lest the screen is fine and like other had said, once you put the case on you might not notice the damage.

+1! People care about the design, the weight and the size of their gadgets and then slap a case on them!?!?!
I have NEVER used a case on any of my smartphones, I can't stand even an extra millimeter or an extra gram (besides making them ugly).
I have dropped my Galaxy S 3 times: no damage whatsoever.
I have dropped my Galaxy SII once: no damage whatsoever.
I haven't (yet?) dropped my note but I prefer to have to deal with the possible consequence of a drop than to have to live with a case..

Can you post a picture??

Forgot to add: how do you put it in your car cradle with a case on? (you don't use your smartphone as a GPS Navigator then..) How do you swap batteries? (you don't use your smartphone period then..)

Wow, I feel your pain, I learned that lesson the hard way with my Arc, now I use a £10 phone when I'm out!
How bad does the phone look now?

I dropped my Treo 600 in a freakin lake about 2 months after getting it. I dove in and got it, threw it in the boat and it was dead, dead, dead. Took it home and it sat on the counter the remainder of my vacation. At first you could see the unit exhibiting small signs of life and eventually it came back and worked 100%. Sometimes miracles happen

Wow, I'm surprised your Nexus One still works dude.. guess HTC's testing process did do some good. Or, you just got extremely lucky somehow.
On an off-topic side note, did anyone notice in the video where the Nexus One fell, the screen did not crack? I assume this was an almost final version of the product? Why though, does when people drop their phones on the concrete it still breaks? If HTC went through this rigorous testing process, why are phones breaking so easily?.. Of course glass breaks easily, but did the material they dropped the phone on was not as dense or hard enough as concrete? Or was it simply the multiple angles they tried..

In the video it looks like the phones are dropped from what appears to be rather less than hand-holding height, onto a surface that appears to be slightly rubbery. Concrete tends to be rather unforgiving no matter what you drop on it.
In December, I dropped my HTC Magic into a kid's swimming pool, left it to dry for one day and it's still in great working condition today =)
Did this exact same thing to my old Nokia 8190 back in the day, and the bowl wasn't "fresh". Phone came out fine other than the battery life dropped to 6-8 hours of standby, ended up carrying a spare in my wallet.
Oh lol, nice reaction tho..

Siii screen dead on first drop from pocket

GUYS,
PLEASE BEWARE, the Galaxy S3 is no where as sturdy as the S1 which i previously owned or a S2.
Today it just fell off from my pocket and see what happened to the screen :-(
I had dropped my previous S1 a million times in the period of 2 years and not a single scratch
I am going to give it in on warranty, pathetic stuff from samsung
please everyone take care and use a casing.
Yikes
That's annoying. Hope you get it fixed mate.
I wonder if Samsung does that dirty trick of logging out the G sensor to detect whether it's been dropped or not and not accept warranty repairs based on it.
It was all fine after the drop. I used it for about 30 min. Then when i woke up in the morning, the screen was like this
it was a very subtle drop, this is pathetic quality and should be covered under manufacturer defect
Warranty don't cover clumsiness
G-sensor isn't a dirty trick to see if phone is dropped its proof
Sending back for warranty repairs saying you didn't drop it is a dirty trick
If you drop your phone a million times I strongly suggest phone insurance and a otter box case

then they should say that this phone is made out of glass.
ITs a phone its supposed to be able to take such small hicups

To be fair, its pretty reasonable to expect that someone would at some point in a two year period drop a device that they will likely be carrying about with them ALL the time and removing it from and replacing it in their pocket frequently.
Just yesterday my s3, having only got it on monday, slid off the arm of my sofa because every surface of it is glassy smooth and bounced off the edge of a wooden table. Luckily it was unscathed but it is not unreasonable to expect a device of this nature to be able to withstand such an accident.
There is a certain amount of luck involved here though because obvioisly even the lightest tap at the right angle and position could shatter a screen.

With today's technology and what it costs is the minimum that can withstand drops of at least 50 cm like my RAZR .........
If im not mistaken it seems as if all the white ones are the ones with the faulty issues... the cracked screens, the exploding phone, dead screen... dont you think that might be the reason they're releasing the white at a later time? to perfect it a lil more...i read something where that they had to redo the pebble blue because of some issues and maybe they're redo'ing the white version...hmmm makes sense....:good:
Unlucky mate, hope it gets fixed. I am fairly certain that my phone is going to get dropped sooner or later, simply because it's so big (even more so in a case) that I can't hold it securely in one hand and operate it properly at the same time.
Tbh I'm going to keep hold of it until the rumoured multiple Nexuses come out later in the year and then maybe sell it on to get something slightly smaller.

no. I think since the pebble blue was delayed due to Samsung's color issue, the bulk of what was immediately available were the white phones. Then when a few units had problems, they happened to be white.
My white one fell out of my hoody jacket as I was running for the bus, I was lucky that it landed on the cement, not the grass or I wouldn't have noticed it. Three corners have massive damage and there paint scraped off, it really did hit the ground hard. But the screen is perfect

...or how about something that does both like the Galaxy S2
I agree that if you drop your phone you only have yourself to blame if it breaks but having said that i also believe a device like this should be able to withstand some drops, they managed it with the S1 & the S2.
My advice would be to get it insured and get a case of any description, something is better than nothing, even if it's only a pouch!

N4 - Sliding Off Surfaces Falling Onto Floor

Ok guys - weird happenings, i use a usb cable from my desktop pc to charge my N4 at times. I had been sitting it on top of the pc tower & it has fallen onto the laminate floor 3 times and came out without injury. So i thought it was vibration from my pc tower, so i have been sitting the phone on my pc desk surface, today i found the phone hanging half way across the edge of the desk. There is no serious vibration to mention from my pc or desk, the phone has not been ringing for the phone vibrate to cause it either. So does anyone else have any paranormal activity with their N4 strangely falling off surfaces??
only thing i notice is the glass bottom surface is very slidey
This has been a problem since day one. Put a rear screen protector on. That'll fix you up.
this is the reason I bought a bumper when I ordered mine
Yeah, that's not paranormal I'm afraid, the back is very slippery, the device can and does slide even with no vibrations at all. Just make sure to place something in the surroundings of the phone when you leave it charging that can block random slides.
cheers guys, this is surely a bad design, im so lucky no serious damage occurred. Ill buy and try the rear screen protector as im not a fan of phone covers etc, Fingers crossed this does the trick. Many thanks guys for the feedback :good::good: :laugh:

You are charging it with your PC on top of the tower with a cable tugging on it... And you are saying it is bad design? Give me a break.
Try using your charger and maybe put it someplace where the cable will not pull it. This is not rocket science.

stop being such a forum ****.
I never said i was charging it on top of the pc tower, i sat it there. When its charging its on a flat desk surface as is the charge cable. I have sat the phone on my desk and sat it on top of my wallet and it falls off. So with this phone i will need to be careful how i place it. Of course its a bad design, i should be able to sit my phone flat on a flat surface and not worry about it falling onto the floor. Nexus aint gonna give me a new one if it were to get broken and no warning came with the phone.
oh and you know what, common manners to fellow humans, that aint rocket science :silly:

my n4 has probably fallen/jumped at least 50 times over the past 5 weeks, and its still in perfect condition(no cases or screen guards). luckily, the far majority of falls have been on a carpet, but some have been pretty scary
I can also say that I find mine sliding. It's quite weird actually, from the tests I've done I've noticed that it usually occurs when I have it on my leather couch or my ottoman. Yes, I know it's not a desk but the phone is sitting there rather level. It has also done it on my home desk as well, but not at my work desk (yes, both desks are level). It kind of reminds me of an air hockey table type situation. If you have it on your desk and push it, it doesn't require as much work as lets say an SGS3, Galaxy Nexus, or Blackberry to move. Basically the way it's designed causes it to not create much friction between it and the surface it is on.
Although, none of this bothers me since the phone is a fricken beaut.

guys, it's not the phone. It's the surfaces you're placing it on. Most tables/desks are nice, smooth and shiny. Combine that with the glass and a NOT SO PERFECTLY FLAT SURFACE and you get falls

Note 2 keychain hole

Idk if this has already been pointed out or not... On the back of the Note 2, the part of the back cover that covers the speaker is brought outward. I'm assuming this was so you could add keychain accessories. I just put a keychain on mine and it doesn't harm the speaker at all. Anyway, just thought it might be an interesting find. Hopefully somebody can get something out of this post! Cheers!

I just got this phone yesterday... I was really hoping that it was a spot for keychains because I have one that my girlfriend gave me. Yeah, I'm serious. I guess it was just wishful thinking.
I do use it for a wrist strap and have shaken it quite a lot just holding the strap and I do not believe the back will come off due to the weight of the phone as the back stays on very well.
i dont prefer you deal with that hole..... as thats not designed to hold something,
it might pull out the whole back cover and if so, yr battery will drop too
haha

Note 2 - wrist tether strap
I've been thinking about registering for a couple of months on here just so I could let people know about this very idea. Odd that it turned out to be on the front page on the same day.
As far as those of you are concerned about this ruining the speaker sound quality or breaking the cover or pulling the back off of the phone, so far it hasn't been an issue for me. I have been using it ever since I purchased one of the TrustFire XML C8-T6 5-Mode CREE LED 1000 Lumen Flashlights (or maybe it was the Ultrafire Wf-502b, I can't remember).
The good thing about having the phone tethered to the wrist like this is that I don't have to worry about putting a case on it to keep it safe. Pretty much the only time I have dropped any of my phones has been while actively using it, especially on this phone due to the necessity of stretching my fingers across the screen to hit the upper left hand corner. Now that I have this, it doesn't matter how awkwardly I balance it, I don't have to worry about dropping it. Now I slip the phone in top first into my pocket and then I pull my hand out of the tether as it enters my pocket and then I leave some of the loop hanging out of my pocket so when I try to get at it later, i can slip my fingers through as I pull it out and slide it onto my wrist. Now, whenever it leaves my pocket, it is securely attached to my hand. This makes it faster and easier to get to it in my pocket when I have several other things in there as well. I also have my mother using it and it makes it easy to put the phone in here purse and leave the tail of the band hanging out so that she isn't rummaging through the thousands of things in her clown car of a purse.
I thought about getting one of those fly grips or whatever they are called that you place your middle and ring finder through and secures the phone to your hand. While that is almost assuredly a more efficient and ergonomic grip, I prefer to have my phone without out any extra added weight/thickness unless it makes it vastly superior for certain uses (such as a 6200 mAh battery that would last for international flights etc). Otherwise, I just have a Spigen screen protector and the wrist strap. I don't really care much about scratching the back since the replacements will soon be cheap enough not to matter to most people.
edit: although one can obviously jerk it away hard enough to pull the cover off, I've never had it happen and only while swinging it around and jerking it back to my abruptly to test to see how well it would hold, it only pulled two of the tabs loose and it was still securely attached. As far as breaking the grille itself somehow, as long as you aren't putting a metal ring through it, it should be plenty strong enough for the most demanding everyday usage. I've seen youtube videos bend some previous samsung cases in half without snapping, so I am assuming it would be sufficient for most people. your mileage may vary, especially if your back cover doesn't seem to fit as tightly as other peoples.

Get a case Waiting for my spigen to arrive. In the meantime I'm handling it with much care lol. Haven't remove the protective films on the side and the back yet. Don't wanna scratch the new toy now.

Same here. Protective films on the side and back are still intact, on top of that I'm using QuickWindow
Me too using a quick window and a screen-guard. I dropped it few times from 1.5m height. Landed on the back, bounced turned around, opened the quick window cover, hit the front and slide around 1m or little bit more on tiles.
So glad I had a protector, or the case that it mattered. Once it popped out of the case. But that was about it.
I should also note. IT WAS THE QUICK WINDOW CASE FAULT that it dropped in the first place... I am not sure who design these things.
But my hands are not build to hold it... I still didn't figure out a way of holding it and using it properly.....

To answer the question. No its not too fragile. Its an average phone in that department in my experience. Everything depends on the luck of the drop and protective measures if any.
I've developed the habit of hooking one of my fingers into the window case so that in the event that it slips, I'll still be grabbing it by the window. Worked so far for me!

I dont think it's fragile at all, or it's at least as strong as it needs to be for me. The 2nd day I got my G2, my daughter got a hold of it and dropped it from about her waist level onto tile. (she's only 2 and 1/2 btw) Just a very minor nick was left on the corner but it's not noticable unless pointed out.
I have since purchaced this case from amazon LINK. And a couple days after I recieved it, the G2 accidentally went for a ride on the trunk of a friends car. It was face down so the rubberized texture surrounding the screen held it there for a few miles before it slid off. I used the android devce manager online to track it down and when I found it a couple houses down from another friends house, the phone was in the same condition. Granted, this is more of a testiment to how strong the case is, the phone probably slid off at around 45mph.
Lol the car ride..
I want to upgrade my phone it seems like the g2 has the best processor out now, u guys can recommend anything over the g2?

Me personally. Maybe I would wait for the Z1S if I was in need of something new. Just personal opinion.

Nah.. the Z1 is inferior and the display sucks just too much. Very bad viewing angels ... That's why I said Z1S amazing performance in a much smaller package that we are used to from high-end.. at least according the leaks etc...

Yea the smaller one but it hasn't been announced for release yet... Z1 would be good enough for me with beast cam (crap software) and same chip..... G2 30$ on amazon hard to pass lol just hate the button design and mp3 on the bottom, also no SD makes it really limited and 'uncomfortable'...
I dropped my 4 days old g2 on a concrete floor from around 1.5m, landed on it's corner, the screen and the digitizer cracked, have to wait 2-4 weeks to get a replacement -_-

Wow, that sucks. Sorry dude.
I carried mine w/out a case for a week. It made me nervous. The thin bezel on this phone makes a case a must IMO. But, it's a great phone
and it feels solid once I got the corners protected.

For me, it was either the g2, note 3 or z1. The screen to bezel ratio and carrier availability is what won me over in comparison to the z1. And too many people had the note 3 in my area. One of my pet peeves is having the same device as everyone else. Especially when they know nothing about the tech world. Lol. So far in my area i havent run across another with the g2.
I couldnt be any more happy with the hardware performance and the UI so far. This is the first device ive ever owned in which I dont see a need for a custom rom or tweeks so far for what i use it for.
I went with the s4 for a couple months I'll have another upgrade in my account and will get something else and give s4 to my mom....
I passed the g2 cuz its battery is locked in, no SD expansion, and the terrible button design on the back which I don't like....
