Galaxy Tips / Gestures - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hi, Is there already a tips / gestures post anywhere. Thi device can do wonders and I think it would be good to list them in one place and how to use them.
For instance you can take a screen shot without the stylus by using the edge of your palm and swiping across the screen. Just like a scanner !
I would be nice to make a thread and sticky.
Sorry if this has already been posted (please delete mods) but it should be on the first page !

These things are described in the manual. Maybe people should read it.
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/c..._EU_Gingerbread_Eng_Rev.1.1_111104_Screen.pdf
Page 44 onwards.

I agree tdodd, however not everyone is carrying the manual along with them where they go, they do take their phones

I'm agree, I'm not home and don't have the manual with me...anyway i never read manuals

Download the manual pdf and read it on the phone

The manual is electronic and available online. If you can read it on the forum then you can read it from the web too, can you not?
In any case, you can download it to your phone at your convenience and access it there any time in the future without data charges or wait times - even when travelling abroad and facing stiff data roaming charges, or in the wilderness and without a data connection at all.

Touch gestures and Google maps

Been using HD2 for a month already. Haven't actually used any smartphones before, my overall impression is pretty good and I haven't run into many severe problems. The worst incidence was the handset wouldn't boot and kept vibrating all the time. I got a replacement, fortunately, although I never knew what happened.
Enough of irrelevant stuff. I would like to ask a few questions and see if anyone may shed any light on that. I use the stock ROM as shipped.
While browsing with Opera (the builtin one) or Skyfire, double tap will activate the pinch-to-zoom. Therefore, when browsing "conventional" non-mobile oriented sites like Google Maps (yes I know there is one builtin but there are other sites which may require double click but not available as a WM application) you are unable to emulate a mouse double click, but got zooming activated. So, is there any way to workaround this?
Similar question: Some non-mobile oriented sites use frame or iframe in layout, and with desktop browsers you may drag on the divider to resize the frame. By trial and error I managed to do so on HD2 (Opera?) a few times in the past but most of the time it would simply not work. Anyone with similar experience?
Last one - anyone has tried Google Maps 4 on HD2? Is it worth the risk to upgrade (still using the stock version that I believe is 3.x)? I found the street view images is somewhat blurred when compared with those I saw from behind the shoulder of some friend of mine who was accessing a similar area using an iphone. Or is that an illusion only?
I searched here and did not find anything directly useful. My apologies if I missed something here amidst the sea of threads here.
When/Why would you ever need to double click on a webpage?
As I cited, Google Maps is already one. I know of other mapping sites that rely on similar means to zoom in. Some of these sites do not have the +/- buttons for zoom so you must stick with double click on desktop PC.

its 4.xx or whatever, and you can just install it over the other one.
it won't cause any problems or anything like that.

Galaxy S 2 arrived! :D - Impressions,problems and questions

Hey guys,my GS2 finally arrived today!
So,starting from good things.I absolutely love the screen, speed and smoothness.Nothing brings the phone to its knees, not even downloading 30 apps at the same time from market!
I won't go on with the good stuff of the phone, you all already know it's awesome(probably).
I also have some issues though. What I saw first was that my phone came with KE2 on it.I thought ok,I'll update it.I go to Settings->Phone info(Or whatever it is,mine is in greek)->Software Updates and I run a check. It says I have the latest firmware installed.I then try on my PC with Kies and it's the same. What is wrong here?Does anyone know?
Second thing is that it charges really really slow. It's partially normal that it takes longer than my Desire HD to charge 'cause the battery is like 25% bigger, but that much longer?Good thing is it also discharges slower!
Third. That's a pain.Isn't there a USB Disk mode?Cause the only way I can transfer files between my phone and PC is via Kies(I don't like it,reminds me of iTunes). And what's worse,I cannot transfer from my PS3.
Fourth. Some market apps can't install.Mostly games(Only one wasn't a game),for example Angry Birds with the exception of Angry Birds Rio.Is it normal for the SGS2?Cause I saw Chainfire3D has an option to repair something with apps not installing from market.
If I find a fifth or more I'll post again!
Now to questions.
1)How the hell do I put my phone in download mode?I haven't managed to find that anywhere.
2)Can I enter bootloader and fastboot normally by holding volume down key like on HTC devices or is it trickier here?
3)Rooting is just as easy as clicking a button in Odin? With no possible side effects?I can' accept it's that easy!
4)Until I root, does Chainfire3D take care of banding issues too?Cause banding pretty much ****ed up my Robotek experience(I got addicted to Robotek last week for Christ's sake! ).
5)Is making a Nandroid backup possible? If not,is there any way to back up the phone like with Nandroid?
That's for now...I think!Sorry for noobish questions but my whole Android experience was with HTC devices. The Galaxy S 2,as an experience altogether(meaning for software,hardware-wise it blows away everything) isn't worse nor is it better than the HTC devices I've owned. The abscense of Sense will take a long getting used to,but I'll live with it.Meanwhile I'll be loving the speed, the power, the smoothness, the awesome camera and everything else that makes the device great. You know what I mean, right?
Thanks in advance guys!
PS:You don't have to answer all questions simultaneously, answering one or two will make me a happier SGS2 user.If you insist to answer to everything though I won't get mad at you obviously!
you can find many of these questions answered in the QA threads.
charging is about 3-3.5 hours.
I use mine as USB drive by enabling "USB Debugging" mode in the settings, it then becomes a couple of hard drives.
this is all I can answer off the top of my head
In wireless and network it says usb utilities and you can enable usb mode in there.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Firstly thanks for the rapid replies guys!
Ok,I didn't know...Will also search the Q&A threads later,as suggested!
I found two more niggles I want to add to the questions.
1)Is there any way I can use the LED flash as a flashlight?Any apps from market?
2)Can't I change user agent in Samsung's browser? Can't seem to find an option...And I can't stand mobile versions of websites!
Thanks!
Unboxing right now.
So. Finally received my GS2 and in the process of unboxing. Reading these threads (spent 3 days in office doing nothing but ) have made me really anxious, but fingers crossed that everything'll be a-ok.
Gonna spend the next few days testing and putting the phone through it's paces. If you guys want me to test anything for you (or if there's anything specific I should check) let me know.

come on ,in one sentence you promise to review the FAQ threads, and in the next sentence you ask more questions that were FAQed multiple times before
your answers
1) a myriad apps can use LED as flashlight. try "Search Light" or "TeslaLED" for example
2) to change the UA just type about:useragent in the browser address box, or install a different browser

I just realised I'm an arse,eh?
Well, right now I am very busy with some friends(Playing Pro Evolution on my PS3,hooked to my 42 inch TV,noice! ),so I'll check later on.Sorry about it though,I don't use to ask noobishly anymore!
As for number 1 I knew there are apps that do so,but I don't know if they are compatible. Will check and see!
Thanks for the second, saved my day!
And one more...I hope this one isn't answered in the FAQ!
Why the hell doesn't it show me the current in CurrentWidget? It says "No data" instead of x mA.That is nasty!
look for Flash Light LED (AE) on the market, its free, and doesnt need root

[Q] Local retailer (US) that stocks Lenovo Thinkpad tablet?

I am considering buying one of these but would like to try it out in a store before I buy it. Does anyone know of a US retailer that stocks them?
I am mostly curious about the following things:
1) How good is it for taking notes in college/university classes? Can you rest your palm on the screen while using the stylus?
2) Is there a way to view the notes taken on pdf on a computer?
3) Is it pretty solid feel wise? Or does it feel like it will fall apart after a couple years?
4) How much bloatware comes on it and is it hard to remove via rooting?
5) Does the screen go dark enough for comfortable reading in dimly lit rooms?
Thanks for the info.
the notes are great, I use Quill, as it works nearly perfect, in the app i have turned on pen input only and jot tons and tons of notes all day long.
You can export the notes to various files, while im not sure about PDF there is certainly a format that can be read on your desktop
Like all lenovo products i've had its built to last like an enterprise system should be. as long as you take care of it it will last a long time past EOL
Bloatware isnt too bad, theres still some stuff lenovo managed to get into the system pretty deep (like the status bar wheel widget thing.) but its never bothered me that much as it only comes up at the home screen.
screen brightness works great in dim rooms, i tend to read books by a small lamp in bed most of the time with minimal strain.
I purchased mine from lenovo direct so I dont know about any local retailers.
Thanks for the info. However when I asked about notes on PDFs I should have clarified a bit. I was asking about their PDF viewer that lets you take notes on the PDF document and weather that can be exported to something useful.
Also I thought of one more thing: If I have my notes backed up with something like spideroak, can the notes be converted on a computer? I ask because I am worried about taking a semesters worth of notes on it then having it die and there being no way to read them without getting a new tablet.

ezPDF allows you to fill out pdf forms, underline, strikeout, and add freehand drawings as well as circles/squares/etc. It should do what you're looking for.
https://market.android.com/details?id=udk.android.reader&feature=search_result
and if you have the file saved as a pdf on your sd card you should be able to open it with any pdf reader (pc or otherwise).
The quill note taking app he mentioned allows you to export your notes to sdcard pdfs
Thanks for the info.
One last thing: has anyone used connect bot or another ssh client on this? I am curious if the keys on the keyboard folio such as escape quotes tild and whatnot all send the proper characters. I had a bluetooth keyboard for my N1 a while back that sent some weird unicode characters for the quotes making terminal usage very difficult.
https://market.android.com/details?id=berserker.android.apps.sshdroid&hl=en
I have used SSH droid with WINSCP worked like a charm, I'm by no means an experienced user with SSH, i just used it to dig around the file system.
SSH droid is a server for the android device, I am asking about using a client on the android device.
My bad, I left my brain at home today... I will test it for you this evening and let you know if the client works with the keymapping
Cool thanks, I look forward to hearing your results.
Update: I just ordered one, so if its too much of a bother don't worry about testing the connect bot thing. My shiny object syndrome overwhelmed my frugal side. Can't wait to get my hands on it.
It works like a charm tested with Moba SSH home 1.22 and connect bot, all the keys from the folio map properly and I haven't seen anything odd at this point, also SSH'd into a couple of Access points over my VPN at work with the TPT to test as well.
Congrats on the TPT! you're gonna love it!
Unfortunately the keys do not map properly, escape is still connected to "back" in the android os and ctrl is connected to "menu". Does anyone know if there is some way to map these to their proper functions?
Thanks

[Q] Is there a "nooter" that performs the bookmark / last read page fix?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467429
As per that thread. Unlike my other android devices I don't have any interest in rooting my nook touch. However, it drives me up the wall when I keep losing my last read page and bookmarks seemingly every time it's most inconvenient.
Do any of the nooter tools incluce this fix? This one has a legitimate problem that B & N seems reluctant to fix in a timely manner.
Currently, no, not yet.
I accidentally my bookmarks..
Maybe we can talk one of them into doing that, because it would be nice to not lose your spot.

You better write suggestion to one|all nooters-rooters. It’s really simple fix script, should be piece of cake to add to any of them.
It can be done as stand-alone apk also but need root access still (to add database triggers).
Unfortunately, as a new user, I can't yet post in those forums. ;p

[Q] How do I disable the link hover feature on FF24/Android4.2.2/GalaxyS4?

Hi, all. I've searched the forums here and on Mozilla's site for this - to no avail (so far). I'm hoping someone might know of this - or at least point me in the right direction.
Sprint GS4
Android 4.2.2
Firefox 24 (mobile)
PLEASE NOTE: Galaxy S4 features: Air view, Motions and gestures, :ALL DISABLED
I've noticed that as I'm hovering my finger over links, an underline appears on the screen corresponding to the link I'm hovering over. Sometimes, if my finger(s) linger too long, the link is selected - without making physical contact with the screen. While this is a really 'neato' feature (I'm sure *someone* thinks it's neat), it can - and does - cause mis-clicks - which can potentially be a safety/security issue (as far as I'm concerned).
I have searched the device and have disabled all features related to gestures (see Please Note, above), yet I still experience this issue. I've also done searches in FF's about:config (although I may not be using the correct terminology to find the feature), to no avail.
I'd simply like to disable this feature and go back to the [slightly] safer, friendlier, physically-required click of the link. I want to follow links I choose to follow, not end up somewhere I don't want to be - or downloading something I don't want because of this annoying hover feature.
Thanks in advance!
