[Q] Transfering Accounts & Sync between roms/android flavors - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello all,
My question is, how can I transfer full account & sync info (including accounts' settings, contacts, emails, calendar, ect) from one rom to the next, without loosing my account info?
Here's my situation: I have been testing a couple different roms (who hasn't ;-) switching from non-sense to sense, all gingerbread though. I have been using Titanium to backup all apps and system data, and as a secondary backup MyBackup (root) of all data (sms/mms, contacts, call log, ect.).
Say I start with AmeriCanAndroid (non-sense), backup as described above, then wipe and install one of the Runny (sense) roms, restore with Titanium.. I can't restore system data because if I do I get continuous FC on com.android.* and so on (which I believe I understand to be incompatible system apps), so instead I only restore installed apps and a few system (bluetooth pairings and wifi access points). And then restore data with MyBackup.
This works out well for everything except contacts and calendar, which is a huge deal. (Background on my contacts; I have a personal exchange server and I don't upload contacts or anything related to google, but atm my server is down and I haven't got around to troubleshooting the issue yet) MyBackup doesn't restore the accounts themselves, it just replaces or appends the info to existing ones, so when I change roms I have it set (for now since I can't connect to exchange to re-setup the account) to place those contacts as part of the phone account (I very much dislike this method, but its the only thing I found that worked out on short notice since I need my phone useable all the time).
I'm looking for a simple backup all accounts method that will restore across variations of android to the default accounts & sync. Is that possible? Thank you very much for your advise/suggestions.

Did you tried to save all your settings via google account? You can do that in settings->privacy->backup my data. Some friends of mine do that with their android phones and when I flash a new rom to their phones they get most of settings and apps back by syncing with their google accounts.
It's worth to try.

Thanks for the reply icke, but the problem in that is, I will never backup my data to google's (nor any other server, other then my own) if possible. That's why none of my contacts are sync'd with google.
I need a solution that will allow me to keep it all local.

[q] how to backup and restore android after flashing

So i am a frequent flasher, i like to try different ROMs and I have a problem with recovering my data. It seems to be a huge pain in the ass with android. With Win Mo it was simple, one click on SPB backup and everything was restored. Not on Android.
I am using only Desire HD or Z based ROMS, currently NAND wit SD IMG. I am looking for a simple way how to backup and restore following settings:
1. CONTACTS - and I mean all contacts with all detail. I have my contacts synched with FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype etc. Google sync and HTC Sense pretends that its synched, but after flash, only basic google contact is synced and I have to manually add all the login info for those services and then wait for them to be asociated and then asociate those that were not connected manually.
2. SMS - this could be solved by using SMS backup, but it would be nice not to have a special application for that. I also have suspicion, that sometimes this is restored from cloud and sometimes not. After one flash, I thought that my sms are lost, because i didnt backup them. After another flash, they miraculously reapeared without me doing anything. WTF?
3. Call log
4. EMAIL SETTINGS - I dont want to set up all the email after each flash.
5. Apss and Data - yeas, this could be done by several apps, smallest problem.
6. System DATA - by that i mean mostly my homescreen setup, wifi settings, bookmarks, RSS feeds, calendar, tasks etc. Something seems to be synced by google, something not. Some apps do that, but after restore, they mess up whole system and cause repeated errors (acore etc.)
IS THERE A ONE APP ONE CLICK SOLUTION FOR THAT?
What pisses me most is the inability of Gmail or HTCSENSE to sync all the information of my contacts. WTF? WHy it cant store all the info, pictures etc. WHy even HTC sense couldnt do it? WHat the hell is HTC SYNC good for, when only option to sync contacts with PC is to sync them to Outlook, whioch is not even available in windows anymore!
I tried several apps and they mostly fail. When tried My Backup Root to backup contacts, it created 800 duplicated contacts out of 300 and when google sync steps in the way during that, it will even mess up your data on the cloud. When i tried to restore system settings with this app I ended up with broken system with error every second.
I dont know how to force Titanium to backup my system data, or SMS and I doubt its possible. When I selected batch full apps+data backup, it didnt recovered even my homescreen setup.
Is it really ncessary to fiddle with my phone for several hours after each flash to get it into previous shape?
the answer is pretty simple
use this application 'mybackup pro'
and install it then you can configure how to backup
it will backup all your app and data
and when you flash a new rom you can restore everything
android is cool
i'm cool too
Is mybackup pro better than titanum backup ?
As far as i get it, My Backup Pro is paid version of My Backup Root which messed my contacts and caused my system to crash after restoring system settings.

[Q] Is there a way to flash into a new ROM...

... without wiping out everything on my calendar and agenda? I have lots of stuff to remember...
Why don't you just sync your calendar with Google Calendar, then sync it back again once the ROM has been flashed ?

+1 for synching to Google Calendar (and contacts to Gmail, for that matter). Google is so well integrated into Android, it makes synching these things completely effortless when flashing ROMs, switching devices, etc. Just enter your Google login, and everything is just there, its wonderful!
What if I'm using Jorte calendar app.
I have a lot of memos and tasks as well.
While I'm at it, I also noted a lotta crap with the NoteEverything app.
Dunno, backup the app(s) with Titanium backup ? That should save their data, shouldn't it ? (not tried it myself)
There should be some sort of an Export Option for that app, save that exported file on SD and after you load the new rom you can restore you appts, tasks, etc
Or like steview said... do some reading on Titanium backup, it freezes the apps to its state and resumes after you do a restore with the new rom.

This. Titanium Backup will save the app and the app's data. Then you can restore both.

Question on the How To's of changing phones

I got my first Android phone last year, and I've loved it. Obviously, hanging out in here, I'm looking at getting the Atrix. OK, I'm committed to it, damnit.
Anyway, question is this: When I pick up the Atrix...how do I get all my crap from my N1 to it? Apps, texts that I want to keep, game data, etc. Is this where we just run something like Titanium (which I *think* requires root) and just restore from that? I'm sure this is really simple and basic...but I've never had to change Android phones before.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
ETA: Are there options that don't require root? Assuming it could take a week or so for the Atrix to be rooted.
Requiring root. You can titanium backup your messages and game data to your sd card. When you get the atrix, put your sd card in it and restore the data using titanium.
Your apps/contacts/games will download automatically as soon as you log into the phone, assuming you have a google account and have everything set to sync automatically on your current phone.
As for a non-root method, I haven't looked into it.

You sure the apps and everything will download? The GF lost her Captivate, so I got her a new one, logged in, contacts downloaded...and that was it. Maybe I just haven't checked the setting to back up the apps as well? If not, I probably need to do that on my N1, though I've got that thing backed up ten ways from Sunday lol.
ETA: Appreciate the help, Mike.
App backup, if I recall correctly is enabled by default, but only available on 2.2+ builds. So that would be why the Captivate didn't come back. As for texts, SMS Backup & Restore works perfectly for me, and it doesn't require root.

If you use a messaging program like handcent, you can back up your SMS and MMS to be reloaded onto your new phone too. Save all your numbers to your google account too, and also consider moving all your apps and files to your external sd card.

Contacts and SMS aren't too big of a deal. I've got those covered a few different ways. I'm worried more about apps, app data, and various settings. If an app doesn't natively support being on the SD card, then one must run Apps2SD, which is cool. Except it's not, since we have no idea when the Atrix will be rooted. And then there's the issue of apps that AT&T *may* not allow. I'm not sure how those would be installed from the SD card, as per your recommendation, if AT&T elects to block non-market APK installs.
In short, I appreciate the reply and discussion. I could have thought through my initial question much better, as your reply has cause me to rethink a bit. Thanks mate.
Funny, I'm gonna go from an N1 to an Atrix as well. I know as far as contacts go, el goog will have them for me already. But I was wondering if using a csv(?) contact backup would be better? My google contacts aren't all right, my online gmail is missing some contacts that are on my phone. My main concern is getting all the extra stuff in contacts; email address, street address, birthdays, etc... Just wondering which would be better at transferring all that?
im in the original winmo boat. First time going to android. What if I sync with outlook, will android synch with outlook? Anybody?

Are you using an Exchange account with Outlook? Android will sync mail, calendar, and contacts with Exchange much more easily that trying to sync directly with Outlook.

I am using Outlook without Exchange on my home PC. Still checking different ways to sync phone and android. I have >5000 contacts from several associations I am in, and I am not sure if Gmail can handle those plus the supplemental info (spouses, birthdates, etc.).

Backing up Email app accounts

Hi
What is the best way to keep a backup of email account settings? I feel most of us switch ROMs and every time adding same accounts is very painful.
Please suggest best way to backup email accounts .
If you use a 3rd party email application then with Titanium Backup you can backup the email app(s) and associated data, which will include your account settings.
Titanium is a doddle to use and one of the most useful apps I've got off the market.
If you're talking about your google account then you have to re-add that for every flash anyway, so don't worry about it.
I have tried TB backing up
User Apps + System Apps
System Apps
Email app
But none of them worked for me..
Can you please suggest what settings need to be backed up.
What app do you use for email?
I am using Email.apk provided by Samsung Galaxy S2.
In that case, I think that gets backed up with system apps, which may be a cause for concern as system apps are sometimes not compatible from one FW or ROM to another, so you can't restore them without screwing up your phone.
If this is a major deal to you and you don't want to have to recreate your account(s) if and when you flash your phone with something, then I'd recommend looking into some of the alternative email apps on the market. I can't personally suggest any from experience as I use the gmail app and have all my other email accounts polled from that, so I only have to enter 1 account on my phone and it gets everything for me (only good for pop3 accounts though - not exchange or imap).
I do know that K9 gets recommended by lots of people though. Maybe that's worth a look.
Edit: I just checked Titanium, and the email app is listed as an app there, so you can back it up, along with associated data. That should do the trick
I always backup my email with titanium backup. Works perfectly with 2.3.3 moving from rom to rom.
I did have issues after updating to 2.3.4 but since I'm sticking with the newest fw I just deleted the old backup and made a 2.3.4 backup. Works great you just need to start the email app twice.

Marshmallow Contact Sync Issues

So I've been having some problems on any Marshmallow rom that I use, on CM 13, Chroma, Minimal, etc. My contacts are not syncing from Google's servers. I have tried different radios just to see if that'd be an issue and it isn't. It's not that big of an issue since I have multirom with MIUI and use that when I need to get in contact with people, but it can get to be a bit of a pain switching over just to call/text people and also add 100+ contacts by hand on MM. One final thing is I use Mybackup Pro and have tried using SMS Backup and Restore to backup and restore my apps and messages via root access and that didn't work either under the different settings to restore contacts, whereas it does on Lollipop and lower. Thank you all ahead of time!
My contacts didn't properly sync on Lollipop either. Some didn't load and I can see them in google contacts. Used Super Backup app. It exports and imports using XML so shouldn't be an issue between versions. Works for contacts, sms texts, logs and calendars (which I didn't try). WhatsApp messages didn't sync from their website also
