Does the battery life in this area improve the more you use the battery? At the moment there seems to be a big difference in how it performs in this area compared to the battery life for other functions on it. When browsing the net you can literally see the battery draining away.

Don't think this action is THAT much of a battery concern, I suggest 3G data connection is the main issue, which in the case, shouldn't be much off difference to the other options at all.
The other issue was screen, yes it is larger, higher resolution, but as a user from N1>LG2X>SGS2>Note, I do not see big difference too, all device mentioned would last me from 12~14 hours with my usage, the 2 hours diff seems related to the different daily usage instead of CPU/Screen etc.
Just a reference:
I had these sync on ALL time:
Contacts/Calender/Twitter/G+/Google Reader/Whatsapp/GMail/GTalk/Latitude
On Wifi only:
DropSync
Normal usage, web browsing mainly, G+/Twitter/GTalk/whatsapp a bit, not much phone calls (45~60 mins), most of the time Wifi (at work/at home), Note would last me 13~14hours.
I have had devices before with suspect battery life, but on them it tended to get hit whatever you were using. Whereas with the Note it seems to have a decent to good battery life on most things, even with various synchs going on in the background. But as soon as you venture online it takes a big hit. It must be related to the screen, which shows in spite of claims at the time that Super AMOLED still eats battery.

Also many web pages have white backgrounds and that is a real killer for amoled. I converted opera to default to green text on black and that helps a lot.

A famous site made some battery tests and the results speak for themselves:
around 9 hours of video playback, but 3h30mn of wifi surfing...
The OLED screen burns the battery because everything is white on the web.
Web surfing is one of the selling points of this phone, but this phone can surf the web only half the time of the best smartphones around:
EPIC FAIL !!!

There's a lot of questions regarding what exactly that test is, since that doesn't match what people are seeing in real life.
I'm guessing they had their screen at 100% brightness.
I find this phone extremely bright, actually, so that's quite overkill.

There is a power saving feature in the stock browser, I think it is added in new firmware. I am on KKA firmware.
Is there any conclusive evidence if the battery drain is from the WiFi conenction or of any browsing will eat it?

I don't use WiFi so I do all my browsing on 3G only. I can have it where my Note only shows a fairly small drain through calls, texts, emails etc. But after say only 30 minutes web browsing the battery is showing a big dent in it.

I think they had it at 50%. Also a real life scenario imo, would be having the brightness at 25-30% and reloading a page every 20 seconds on a good optimized battery. Then only we can talk browsing numbers.
But since they tested the battery and compared it with the same/similar settings setup's on the phones, I guess an alternative browser to work on those "white" backgrounds, is a must..

How did you do that? I'm using opera mobile and I'd really like to reverse the colors or something for night browsing so it's not so bright. I haven't been able too find any such settings. It bothers my girlfriend sometimes if I'm up late at night browsing the web and it lights up the whole bedroom. Red text on a black background would be optimal. Before the Note I used Cyanogen Mod which has a render effect you can activate in the settings to disable green and blue sub-pixels for a red night vision effect (or other combinations for other colors.)

1) How to have best battery life? I currently already
-Turned off Bluetooth and GPS
-Wifi only when I need it
-Using SetCPU with profiles from another thread

Im guessing that all the apps autostarting uses alot of battery so I always stop them with Task Killer but they just restart. I tried using Auto Task Killer but it doesnt seem to work. Any help?
2) I use like 40% a day so should I charge everyday or wait until its down at a certain level?
EDIT
Also, whats a good video converter to convert videos for the phone? Most that I tried takes forever and my computer is definately not a slow computer.
Stop using a task killer, the OS will handle the apps. If you keep shutting them down they have to keep restarting, that will suck power.
Any data sync will drain your battery if you us it to often, set it to a reasonable time frame.
I leave my screen on auto seems to work well, and you can charge whenever you feel like it no need to wait till it's low.
If you use Rockplayer you shouldn't even have to convert your movies unless they are full HD. It's a great player you should try it out.
Hi, mine goes down at an average of 1% battery per hour at normal use since the firmware update (v23).
I enable wifi only when I'm at home, for the rest I only use Edge/gprs because at my work the 3g signal appears to be too weak and 3G drains the battery really fast.
Bluetooth and gps are off, Google account syncing is on.
I believe that a lot of widgets have a negative effect on the battery life, so it might be a good idea to limit their number.

Ok I found out the major battery drainer via the battery usage in settings. It shows the the Display accounted for 80% of the battery usage. My display brightness is only set at aprx 25% and I have a total of 4 widgets on. Whats the problem?
Regarding the conversion, I am using rockplayer already but I just want to toggle the video settings a bit (mainly resolution) so the file size is smaller.

More of a wish than an objective but a month would be nice
In the early 80s a 20MB HDD was about the size of 100 X10's and now my X10 has 32GB of storage the size of a postage stamp.
The computing power of an X10 would have filled a 10 story building in 1980.
Where are the big advancements in batteries?
What we need for the X10 is a Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Bottom line is that it's a huge screen and it sucks power.
Try this, turn off "everything" and play a 2 hour movie, doubt you'll get to the end of it.
Since the screen is so large battery life would have been better served by an AMOLED screen rather than TFT.
Gary.. Think this latest firm ware has a bug that shows the display draining battery much more than it really is.. You should ignore that. My display is set to auto. I get a full day from about 50%.

This is not another thread about battery life obsession. It's more about a curiosity.
I have my Evo tuned so that it has great battery life on standby. When I use it for anything--SMS, data, local apps--the battery drains very fast.
I know that data, CPU, and display are the major consumers, but...
I have a Nexus One, with also a 1Ghz Snapdragon, and almost exactly the same loaded apps. Same screen resolution, both on 2.2. Both have 1500mAh battery. The only difference is the display technology and radio (GSM/EDGE/HSPA vs. CDMA/1xRTT/EVDO).
When used equally, the N1's battery does not drain nearly as fast as the Evo. How come? I know AMOLED is supposed be more power efficient, but by that much? I know CDMA can be less efficient, but again, by that much?

Duh! Edited from Hummingbird to Snapdragon (got confused-I just picked up an Epic which has Hummingbird). Thanks for correcting.
They both use Snapdragon, Hummingbird is Samsungs CPU codename, it's based on the same architecture but uses a smaller process.

Is it something new, or has this always been happening?
Was it after the new update or kernel WHATEVER, that you flashed?
If you’re running the stock kernel, do you think the fact that the screen is physically bigger may have something to do with the difference? I’ve always accounted the difference in the battery drain speed (between screen on and screen off) to the fact that most of us are running tweaked kernels that are overclocked when the screen on (with 5 point multi-touch, etc), and underclocked with the screen off.
The problem with battery life issues is that most of the time it can be just a perception and not scientific evidence at all.
Personally, I had an iPhone 3GS prior to getting an EVO and I would say the same exact thing happened with my iPhone. Especially when I was playing games. It doesn't seem to happen with my EVO.
Even seemingly silly things like the Battery Icon can help with the perception that battery life on the phone is bad. Since it only has 4 levels, it kind of tricks your mind into thinking your battery is draining really fast. Try flashing this.
Scientifically, The difference in battery life running the same exact apps under the same exact conditions would be almost negligible between an Evo and a Nexus one. You could even test them side by side and see for yourself.
Also, some facts:
- CDMA 3G is LESS power hungry than HSDPA when actually using it. Heck, EV-DO even uses less power than CDMA 2G(1xRTT)! Wi-Fi uses even less, so use it whenever you can.
- There's a huge misconception that AMOLED Screens use a lot less battery than regular LCDs, but in fact, that's only when the screen is showing LOTS of black color. During a web browser session with lots of white webpage viewing, AMOLED has no Power consumption advantage over LCD.
Signal is a HUGE contributor. I get about 12 hours out of my battery 3-4 out of 5 bars. I went to the sand dunes and had 5 bars and my phone lasted 28 hours.

there are some variables here - my router at home sucks, so I actually get better signal (and battery) with 3g and not wifi unless I'm in the same room as the router. Like the guy above me said, signal plays a huge part in it.

On both phones, I have a % battery gauge. I use both phones in good coverage area and have observed them over weeks of use. I would use one phone for the day, do the exact same thing, use the other phone the next, and consistently see the N1 having 20-30% more battery at the end of the day. I'm thinking of loading "current widget" to see the drain rate between the two phones.
On the subject of radios: I have seen manufatures list longer battery life for EDGE vs. HSPA and the same for 1x over EVDO. Also I [think] usually see longer standby times for a comparable GSM/UTMS phone over CDMA (e.g., Touch Pro2 on GSM/UMTS vs. Touch Pro2 on CDMA).
When one says that EV is less power hungry than 1x, are we talking about a time-use comparison or efficiency? Example: 1Mb download, 1x takes, say, 1 minute, while EV takes 10 seconds. Yes, for that download, EV took less power. But if one were to have 1x & EV both running for one minute, which takes more power? I ask because I remember seeing EV transmitting at higher power than 1x.
Good heavens the battery is killer on this thing. I've been using it off-and-on for 24 hours (minus a few hours for sleep), and I still have about a quarter charge left.
I mean, I don't do really heavy-duty stuff with it... mostly Google Talk, Chrome, and Pulse, but for me, that's just the way I work.
Other thoughts, I like the keyboard, but I wish there was a small layer of number keys at the top, similar to HP's TouchPad.
Wifi performance has been great so far. No problems there.
Also, I read some accounts about text seeming blurry or something, but I honestly have no idea what those folks are talking about. Text is crystal clear.
When browsing, a lot of the sites I use revert to the mobile versions. This is maddening, especially when those sites don't create a clear way to get to the desktop version.

So HD Dolphin works on the XOOM?
That's great to know. I have always hated Android's stock browsers. They're so slow. Dolphin HD is so much better.
The Battery life is phenomenal i've been using it from 5:30 am and it's now 11:30 am and i still have 85% left . I'm not so sure about the keyboard , Swiftkey demo a keyboard made for the Xoom which looked great , i searched for it in the market but it's not there yet . The browser could be better but i'm not worried about that i know browsers will be coming out for it soon ,overall it's a great Tablet . Just tried FPse emulator and it works full screen on the Xoom only needs some minor adjustment for better picture frame rate is better than on my droid x ,man this thing has potential .
Standby test
Well I did my first standby test. After 8 hours on standby with WiFi turned on, I am still at 100%! The notification light was even blinking part of the time.
Yup, it's pretty solid. I used it constantly from the time I walked out of the store to the time I went to sleep last night around midnight and I still had 24% battery life, all on the charge the device had right out of the box.
Downloading apps, web browsing, watching a little video, light gaming, some email, YouTube, spread over 12 hours. Wish I would have checked the batt percentage initially, but that is still pretty solid.

At 9:00 EST, I took it off the charger from overnight charging. Since then, I watched 30 min of last nights Royal Pains xvid release in Rock player, played (give or take) 2 hours of Zenonia, took notes in a class with documents to go, typing with the screen on the whole time for 40 min, browsed Pulse for 30 min, Played Angry Birds for 10 min, and did some web browing/downloaded files from market for 20 min.
It is now 4:45 EST with 54% battery life left, and brightness is at about 75%. I turned off mobile network data since I never even activated it. I kept track of time intentionally so I would know approximately how much real world usage I could actually get.
Thats approx 4 hours of usage leaving me with a little more than half the battery. Call it what you want, moderate or heavy.. I wouldn't call it light use though. To me that is pretty good, and the battery level would probably be significantly higher if it was at say 50% brightness.
I also don't know about other people, but I don't have any force closes, except for the rabbit game that brings me back to the home screen every time I finish a level.

So I was reading up a bit on battery life, and someone suggested in some thread that they keep it on edge for most of the time, as it works fine for calls/texts/email and light browsing, and then just uses the 3g/4g when he needs extra speed, with like heavy browsing or youtube or something. So my question is - does being on edge use significantly less battery than hsdpa?

It depends on your usage. Everything is relative, if you do a lot of browsing on edge, it's taking longer to access pages and download files, so power consumption is smaller but happens over a longer period of time. What really matters is how solid your signal is. If you are ever in a spotty coverage area, it's better to put it on edge because then the radio is frequently seeking a connection and burning through battery unnecessarily. In that situation while on edge it consumes much less power to stay connected to the network when possible. But you won't see an overwhelming difference between edge and 3g unless you have a lot of apps/widgets that continuously update themselves. Some people will see significant gains from keeping their phone on edge, others not so much.
You'll have a better result rooting and installing a custom ROM like Royal Glacier or Orange Glacier that have been optimized and use more efficient kernels. With either of those ROMs you should easily be able to go the entire day without throttling usage before you need to charge your phone.
To the poster who asked: you can find edge only (aka GSM only) in menu>settings>wireless&networks>mobile networks>network mode.
Well the point is that you still use 3g/4g when you need it, it only takes a few seconds to switch, like for streaming audio/video or if you know you're going to be using the browser for a while, but for light browsing (i.e. looking up an address with google) edge is fine. I tried it for a few hours, and obviously phone and texting were unaffected, but everything else seemed to work smoothly too: gmail pushed through, widgets updated, etc. I guess I'll just experiment for a couple days to see if I notice any difference.
And yeah - I'll get around to rooting soon. I'm following a similar pattern with my MT4G that I did with my MT3G. Use it on stock for a while, then when I DO root, it'll feel like getting a new phone
Root you phone...
Before my phone was rooted i used an app called juice defender. It worked pretty well but not as well as i hoped. I was always skeptical about rooting my phone but found out my warranty covers rooted phone so i took the dive. Battery life has more than doubled. I use runCPU and you can practically turn your processor off while your phone is asleep.
I haven't tested it on this phone, but on my G1 I would almost airways use edge and it would last almost 3 days, but if I left it alone it would barely last a day...I've been wanting to try, but I can't bring myself to hold the phone back, it seems so inhumane

There's not really any difference because when you are on edge speed it takes much longer to download items and browse from one web page to the next. The ultimate result is that the batter is working just as hard if not harder when on edge speed.
There doesn't seem to be a thread for discussing battery life, so here you go.
I've been quite happy with it, lasting 2 days on average before it needs a charge with light to medium use (Messaging, web browsing, email)
Few battery charts: http://imgur.com/a/d0V2F
the priv battery have been good with me, it can last a day full without charge, a heavy use of gaming also can last a day
I've had opposite results with my battery. I get about 6 hours with light to medium use. I've only had it a two days so I'm assuming like all my other androids it's get better after some use and a few recharges.

Theres a few things that also improve battery life significantly, going into developer options and changing transitions to .5 or off completely, and if your in an area that doesnt have GSM or CDMA, you should turn that option off in your network signals.
I think theres a really good post on crackberry for it

Why would animation scale improve battery?

From what i've read on numerous forums, the battery level drains a lot faster when subjected to certain task. For example, gaming does not seem to put a huge amount of strain on the device or battery, however general web browsing does.
Same goes for the heating issue - I've yet to actually document what puts the device under strain causing battery life issues.
For me - as a rule, the battery isn't so great. It's better than the Z5 which I sent back, but around 2/3 as good as my Moto X Play. I'd expect the device to be lasting a LOT longer given the battery capacity (near on par with the MXP) however, as mentioned there are certain tasks which seem to drain the battery quicker than others.
I usually get around 3.5-4 hours screen on time a day out of a full charge.

Most of these will make tiny differences that wont really save the battery life enough for an end user to notice. Things such as scaling down animations will help with the performance slightly which, yes, will affect the battery but we're talking 1-2mAh per day.
Yeah I'm noticing pretty stinky battery life on this guy compared to my G4 which is weird because they both have an 808 and the battery is larger on the Priv along with a smaller screen. Really like the phone overall but I'm not at all enthused by having to charge this thing constantly. Plus it's always running hot for me even if I'm only using it to respond to a text message or two. Really not happy to have to return it. Also seems to get laggy for me on Google Chrome which is lame. Very high potential phone I just dont have the time to wait and wait for updates to fix the battery and heat issues.

That's a shame you're going to return it but understandable - I am confident that BB will improve the battery performance over time, but it's just a case of when. The pro's of the phone (power, speed, screen, camera etc) outweigh the need for a good battery life for me.
Keep us posted.
Agreed. I really liked the phone but mine gets hot and laggy and I've got the screen click in the bottom left corner and the back has that strange hollow feeling that seems to be complained about all over Crackberry. It could even just be a t-mobile thing but I don't want to take my chances especially when the phone is so expensive. Fingers crossed that they release an awesome update or skmething for this phone, though. But with just 25 minutes of screen on time (phone on for just one hour total) I've lost nearly 20% battery. Can't figure it out either. Brightness all the way down, Bluetooth and WiFi off, Gmail sync off, WiFi calling disabled, BBM disabled and it still is hot as could be and eating battery. What I would do to have access to wake lock detector!

Truly, after completing all of these battery tips, i didnt even do every one on that list, but changing the sync + radio + animations has DRAMATICALLY increased my battery life, went from half day to full day without charge. Radio definitely seemed to be a HUGE drain when trying to access GSM in my area. animations i cant say made a huge increase but the phone is SO much quicker, felt slow and laggy with it on.
Ok, so I have been running my phone a few days now with the new setup. I am now getting 11 - 12 hours of battery with moderate use. That's about twice what I was getting. So it's now comparable to battery life of other phones I had.
So I have the T-Mobile variant, the SVT100-1. My guess was it was all the bloat ware TMo put on the device that was eating g battery. Here is a list of the apps I disabled, since we will probably not getting root and won't be able to uninstall them.
Lookout (BlackBerry App)
Mobile money(TMo)
TMobile My Account
TMobile TV
Visual Voicemail (TMo)
Yahoo Finance
Blackberry Help
A few of the Google keyboard input languages (these more for space nothing performance)
Over the next few days I will enable each one to see if it effects battery life so I can determine which one is killing battery.

Were you able to narrow it down at all?
I'm getting around 4-5 hrs of screen on time - around 16 hrs with moderate use. I notice it heats up quite a bit while on chrome.
Hoping the update to marshmallow will help with the advanced standby feature for apps. Wifes s7 edge has crazy battery life and it only has a couple hundred more mAH capacity. Going to try enabling only 4g/3g since it looks like I have weak LTE signal everywhere I go.
