I have had this Xoom tablet since Monday and every evening after work I've been busy toying with it to see what it can do. Wasn't sure initially that I was going to get it since a new version is about to hit the markets, but I got a good deal at Dixons in Dublin airport (€289) for the WiFi version.
Anyway, in most of the things it's a great toy but it has a few, but really annoying, shortcomings:
- Not able to charge via USB cable
- Not able to mount like a normal Android device to my computers
- Playing movies is a a horrible experience, if at all possible.
For the second item, I have downloaded and installed the Motorola drivers for my Windows PC and after that it mounts just fine. Same goes for my Mac. For Linux I had to fire up the Terminal and do some fiddling following various guides on how to set up USB mounting and Samba sharing. So it's not impossible, just annoying that manual setup needs to be done on various platforms...or perhaps I'm just lazy.
I have quite a few .mkv movie files and I have searched this forum for players that will accept the files. None of the players I've downloaded are able to play mkv even with Codecs installed. All of the players mentioned in this thread do not work with a mkv file the size of 1.5GB. There appears to be software that can convert the files to be more Xoom friendly, but it costs about $30. Of course, seeing my mate being able to play all movie files on his HP TouchPad with WebOS without problems doesn't exactly help to lift my spirits.
I did have some issues with Google Music not wanting to remember my online collection but since downloading the latest app yesterday this now appears to be fixed.
My Xoom runs Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.2.2 - Moray and I flashed the Odachi kernel.
Other than my ranting above the Xoom is great for browsing the web, skype, listening to music and reading books (becoming addicted to buying books in Kindle)
For the MKV files - handbrake won't convert em for you? Cause that's free - and what I use to convert raw material for my xoom.
edit: and I personally have never seen a tablet that charges via USB. Samsung's galaxy tabs charge via their dock, my old nook color required the charger to charge, even though it was a modified USB cable, and the xoom is well.. we know already.

Haven't used Handbrake in a while so I'll have a try to see if it works. Any special settings you set up in Handbrake for it to work with the Xoom?
This is my first tablet so I don't actually have much to compare with regarding the USB charging. I just mentioned the lack of USB charging to two colleagues who have HP tablets and they were surprised that it needs an actual wall charger.
As its been said many times before USB charging would take forever on a tablet. I can charge my xoom to 100% way faster then my girlfriends Galaxy 10 which uses the 5v USB.
And the way the file managing is done is better and worse in a way. Phones and pcs handle it better and i haven't had a issue with corrupting my sd card like i did with my Droid 2 and the old mounting. But linux is a pain to get MTP to work with. On my Win 7 pcs it saw it right away and worked with out needing anything DLed.
And handbrake does all my video converting great. It may not be super 1080P HD but i really dont need super HD on a tablet. Ill try to pull my preset file for you to try.
I use MX Player off of the market for MKV files and it plays them flawlessly when changing to software decoding and such for certain files. You should look into that.

Edit: first one (VLC-nonneon) works albeit the picture is not very steady. Loads of small breaks when playing a film. Second one force closes.

Just out of curiosity, how large are these files you're testing with? .mkv's, .avi's?
The VLC app works for me if I don't try to jump all around the videos too often. It's pre-alpha so there should be some quirks.

The files were about 1.5 GB. I've tried with smaller files and that seems to work. I just assumed that any file under 4 GB would play without problems. In any case I've fired up Handbrake to compress the movie files. Great with free software
My way of doing things.
so far i havent had any problems playing videos, partially because things have been too hectic for the 4g xooms so i keep changing stuff, and partially because most of the movies i own in digital form all play without hesitation, like from the google movies.
as far as mounting goes, windows does fine once u have the drivers, but i hate paying for software, so fudge windows. linux on the other hand is easy, all i do is boot into cwm and mount usb drive. works like a snap, prob work in windows too, just havent tried. that lets u access your externalsd, but theres prob a way to mount ur internal, just havent tried that yet either.
and the charging i read somewhere actually works through usb, its just so slow, and so low that one, it doesnt register, and two it would only really be fesible in an emergency. but i actually like the fact we get a full powered charger that just juices it up quick and painlessly. true the only way to charge it on the go is get a seperate charger, or a converter, but i can live with the battery power.
hope u figure your stuff out, i love this thing. does all i want and more, witht the added benefit of having a metal case, which is more important than u think!! wait till your mates drop their pads, i put mine through some rough wear, and that metal case has saved it several times. the biggest thing that breaks on these that ive seen is the glass on the screen, which is a pretty easy fix, plus it wont make it unusable if u do, just gotta live with it. have fun!!!

I play 10GB MKVs with MX Video player, I have no idea why you would be having issues with your files. I love my Xoom and MX plays everything

Aye, that's a shame but understandable due to the amount of power needed.
- Not able to mount like a normal Android device to my computers
Unfortunately this will be the way for all android devices, also all phones. This is due to the switch to MTP connectivity from ICS and up. Google made this switch so they were able to pool all the memory in a device to a single storage pool, this to avoid all the issues with earlier (low amount of memory) devices which would run out of space after installing a lot of applications like for example the HTC Desire or original Nexus.
- Playing movies is a a horrible experience, if at all possible.
Agreed, it was quite a let down, mostly due to the limitations of the Tegra cpu. As mentioned by a lot of others MX player does it pretty well however, for my own collection i use and can advise you Plex. Its removes the need to recode anything in you library. On the move its not an option if you are without wifi in your case (i have a 3g Xoom myself) but its awesome when connected.

When unboxing I was very excited. I liked the color, the size, the feel and the build quality. I didn't mind the weight either.
Turned it on and was immediately impressed with the screen quality and the snappiness of the OS and preinstalled apps. I immediately checked for latest updates and downloaded flash 10.3.
The good things really stop there. I'm willing to give it another shot if someone can point out some resolutions for the following issues I’m about to point out.
1. I was unable to install some apps. Stating device is not supported. (Example, Slacker Radio, Pinger TextFree and etc...) I thought all android apps were compatibly with Honeycomb? I just thought the cell phone version just upscaled and other apps were optimized for Honeycomb. Boy I was wrong.
2. Video playback was very choppy on most of my files. The files I was trying to play were only 720p m4v files for the iPhone/iPad. I tried 4 different media player apps (Mobi, rockplayer, default player and another I can't think of write now) and all were jerky. The same file can be played smoothly using my Nokia N8 phone with a 680mhz single core cpu. By the way I was using the default Nokia video player app. I thought this device has a 1ghz dual cpu with a Tegra 2 gpu? It’s marketed to play 1080p. What the deal? And the solution to encode with like dvd rip like settings is not really a solution is it? More like a work around too me. There was an extreme lag too when trying to back out of the app.
3. YouTube app was much hit and misses too. More misses then hits. The first time i tried to play a video, it just stayed there with a spinning indicator. Waited for 10 minutes and the video never played. Tried again, played for a little bit then stopped. Tried again and got a force close. Launched and tried again, and a force close again. I gave up at that point. How could Google not QA their own app? I'm not talking about any app, but there main app "YOUTUBE" that gets about a millions of views a day. That's like internet explorer not working on a freshly loaded windows box.
4. How in the hell do I see my pictures in the SD CARD in keyboard slot to show up in the photo gallery? I have a Pictures Folder on the root of my SD Card and loaded it with jpg's and the gallery does not see them. I could not find any settings to add a folder for my SD Card. I can go to the file manager and open them one by one but this is just a ghetto way to look at your pictures. No way to do slideshow. So I went on the market looking for another app. I found QuickPic. Now I can add a directory. But guess what? I cannot see /Removable. Total BS.
5. The crashes. I've only used this device for 3 hours and already I've experienced 5 Force closes. 3 in YouTube and two while in the Market.
6. Other small annoyances I've found were: Clouding issues. I can clearly see it during a movie with the black bars on top and bottom. No task manager to exit or close apps without having to add an app. No Ad-Hoc networking support. I could not see my Wi-Fi hotspot on my Nokia N8 phone. The iPhone, iPad, Nokia Phones and laptops sees them no problem. The touchpad gets in the way while typing. I had to disable it to actually type a paragraph. The browser, I could not find a way to click a link to view full html for Facebook and other websites. Using the same "Opera" Browser on my Nokia N8 phone I have the option to view in full.
Issues in number six I can live with but 1-5, definitely not. I really do believe that the OS was rushed out the door too soon. I also believe Asus has very little to do with it. I am a professional hardware/software QA engineer and I think it should have been cooking in the oven for another 6 more months. I was a first adopter of symbian^3 and too think is was rushed out a couple of months early, but the experience was no way nearly as bad as what I experienced with Honeycomb. I didn't experience a single crash on Symbian^3 until a couple of week later I've owned it. With Honeycomb, a few minutes.
Yes, these are all Honeycomb issues, and you'll see the same with any other tablet running the OS (I went through it all with Xoom).
Let's wait for 3.1 (mid-June, per Asus).

to be fair, video playback stuttering on 720p is a tegra 2 hardware issue that won't be fixed by a software update. in order for it to play smoothly you would need to re-encode whatever you're gonna put on the device
What version firmware are you running?
most of these are honeycomb issues..can't really fault ASUS or the TF for them...
the compatibility issue is subject to each app's own developer to address.. I suspect the honeycomb support will become eventually..
video playback has been discussed extensively everywhere.... as of now..Tegra 2 on honeycomb can only hard-decode main profile h264 (either 720p or 1080p)..I don't find the quality is massively different between main profile and high profile..but I agree it's a pain to re-encode all file to main profile if you have a huge library..

I can easily play 720p h264 [email protected] videos on my Viewsonic Gtablet which was released last year on Tegra2 SOC. That's maximum it can get. Transformer fails to repeat this. Tegra2 is pretty weak hardware, but should be able to decode this. I hope it will be fixed in Honeycomb 3.1

yea, from my understanding 720p h264 [email protected] is the max tegra 2 can handle. if the transformer is having trouble with it then dunno
Youtube for now works better in the browser, 3.1 should fix this. Besides that you can tether your N8 by using the Wpa_supplicant file in the dev section.
Personally I have rarely found apps that wont work so can't help there.
Videos need to be re encoded, for an easy guide search handbrake guide within these forums, it's posted by Buri73.
No idea about SD card in dock either since I don't use the dock slot.

Devs are free to exclude their app from large screen devices when they upload to the market, that is their choice.

AOSP android has no MKV container support, Some OEMs may add support (Like Samsung) but the only way to decode MKV containers is with pure software rendering (E.G. Rockplayer Moboplayer) but software rendering on a 1ghz cpu will _never_ play HD h.264 well
Specs for The current crop of Tegra2 Honeycomb tablets are up to 1080p h.264 baseline-profile only mp4 container only + stereo aac

The mount point for the MicroSD was added by ASUS, the built in google app are not aware of this mount point's existance. Feel free to complain to ASUS. This is why the Xoom shipped with a disabled MicroSD-card slot

I do not get the frequency of crashes you do, but those few I do I expect to clear up with the 3.1, there is no debate that Honeycomb was rushed out of the door.

Android does not need a task manager, if you insist on force-terminating an app go to setting->Applications->manage applications->running

I use Bluetooth PAN, it's easier on the battery. But then again my phone does infrastructure tethering.

As above, I've had no particular problem with video playback, I've used Aura to rip some DVDs using the Xoom presets and they all run pretty fine (some very slight a/v sync issues maybe, but equally that could be my imagination looking for problems that arent there). I can't comment too much on the 720p / 1080p playback issue as I bought the tablet largely as a device for watching movies on the move rather than plugging into a TV and I don't think I'll see too much of a difference between 720 and 1080 on the TF's screen.
Otherwise, as others have said before, I'd like to think the majority of wrinkles will be ironed out with HC3.1. One thing to bear in mind: it's not like we're playing with a new tech running an established OS, or an established tech running a new OS. For better or worse we're running a new (and largely beta-plus) OS on new tech. This is the New World, Android-wise, so I guess we have to expect problems to begin with at least. And hell, at least we have working microSD slots

While this is all true, the OP was talking about m4v container, not MKV. I have a 720p rip of Ninja Assassin in h264 and m4v container and it plays smooth on iPad 2 but choppy on the TF (I had to rename it to mp4 for the TF to recognize it and no renaming has nothing to do with playback as m4v and mp4 are interchangeable like that).

Yes that's my point. Other devices like iPad and Nokia Phones can play these files. I only want to encode once where its a decent quality on my phone, pc, ipad and TF.

The firmware version is 8.2.3.9.
Maybe you should update? 8.2.3.13 has been out for a while now.

I have had the stock 101 from day one, installed all updates and find it to be a fairly good unit for a number of things except video playback. Not sure where the problem originates but this tab is useless for video playback. I am astounded on bad this tab operates. I consider it useless in its current state. I purchased the unit to read books surf and play videos nothing else. It can do the first two fairly well. I have tried just about everything that previous posts have recommended to no avail. Creating directories on the external SD card that disappear. It sometimes plays the video other times it will not. I have owned a few tabs and I consider this one to be the poorest one yet. I would not recommend the 101 to anyone that wants to watch videos without having to piss around to make the 101 operate as it should. This unit should be able to play most video types without having to resort to apps that trick it to work. I will now shut this thing down and not use it anymore. For me it is truly not worth the money I paid for it. This should never have been released to the public
I will fire up my Archos 101 and watch all of the same videos until I cannot stand it anymore. The 101 has no real video playback issues other than it does not support flash he last time I checked. It has its own flaws but it video playback is not one of them.
I really like the TF101 but I cannot overlook its clearly unstable, amazingly childish and poorly thought out video playback section. It is stock and I have not messed with it. I am not interested in spending countless hours conducting surgery on it to make it work. This tab should be able to play most videos out of the box.
My dislike for apple is slowly but surely being eroded with products such as the TF101.
ASUS or Android, you have a problem with your product. Fix it!

Which types of videos ?
Divx : try mx video player it's a good player and it's free
Mkv : diceplayer, paid app.
Btw : do you think you can play divx videos on the ipad out of the box ? The answer is no, so it's not better than the transformer for that purpose. And it doesn't have flash player.
Edit : the transformer can play wmv hd out of the box with honeycomb 3.2. What do you think about that ?

Is that hard for you to just install an application ? If so it's also hard to transfer your videos on the tf. Then you shouldn't watch them.
Well, I hope you got that rant out of your system, because it wasn't really helpful to anyone but you. You could've summed it all up in one sentence: "Personally, I don't recommend the TF for playing videos."
I have an Archos 101 as well, and it does play video very well, because Archos is a media player company. They always have been. They paid extra for all those codecs, and skimped out on everything else. Asus made a tablet, Archos made a media player. Don't compare them.
And for the record, Diceplayer has played every file I've thrown at it. The AC3 codec pack for the Archos was $15, and it only enabled 2 or 3 new codecs. Diceplayer is $6 and it plays almost all codecs.
P.S. I still don't see how this relates to apple. Apple only supports MP4 and MOV. And if you use MOV, you probably still have an AOL account.
P.P.S. Also, what do you mean by "serious video problems"? It says in the specs what codecs it supports, and it plays them perfectly. I think you got spoiled by Archos, and thought every Android device had infinite codec support.

I was not knowingly ranting. I just lay it out on the line. I failed at diplomacy 101. Tell it like it is. But I do expect value for money. Can't say I got that with the TF101 for what I want it to do. I have 4 pc's at home. Just want to surf and watch video on a small form factor. I think many people buy a tab for just what I am doing otherwise just use your PC. I guess I really do not understand what a tab is used for.
I am aware the differences the between the two brands. I am not sure if skimped out is the right term. The Archos is 100 less. I a not expecting it to perform like the TF101. But for that 100 I should get a fully functional video player. For 400 it should work out of the box. Remember the price of a PC's is comparable. Maybe I should not expect much for 400.

Just trying to make a point. Apple makes a good product right out of the box. I just do not want to live in a prison cell. Ipad is still way down the list. Steve and I are not currently talking to each other.

I stand corrected. Very serious problems was the wrong term to use. Maybe something like " 400 spent and it cannot play the most common video formats, go figure".
I still think it is a firmware problem that should never have been. Not sure if it is a hardware problem, too many inconsistencies with on again off again performance. There are too many posts out there regarding this problem for it to be a non issue or operator error.
Your right, I did get spoiled by a somewhat inferior product. It is not very often less gets more. They are meant to do the same thing, with different quality of bits.

You ***** and moan about having to use a program to watch video on your TF, but any of your "4" pc's are going to be the same. I find this highly entertaining. Also, you waste all this time trying things, and writing your snooty thread, that you could have spent doing a basic search to see which formats and programs work best.

i have issues with mkv files in hardware decoding, it plays plays great but sound goes out after a min of playback on all players. But software decode they play fine. Give it time this tab is still a baby. It will keep growing, or so i hope

No need to convert your downloaded videos, if you REALLY have problem, then you are the only one. Like everybody said : mxplayer or the player you mention (except daroon because it doesn't use third party codecs I think) should just do fine for divx. Sure the transformer have flaws but playing divx is not one of them.
Like you said you should RMA it if you're not satisfied. I don't know why you bought a transformer if the only thing you want is a media player, you should have kept the archos. But of course you won't have the nice screen of the asus.

RI've had my tab for a few weeks now and am generally happy with it.
The things I'm pleased with:
Battery life - can't fault it so far
Build quality
App compatability - generally no issues
Web browsing and music are good
Screen is fantastic
Things I'm unhappy with:
The omission of an actual sd card slot is an annoyance
Stock u.i laggy (using adw now)
Mac compatablity is lacking.Kies is ok for it but by no means fantastic
My biggest disappointment has been video compatability or lack of it. A lot of my videos are now digitally encoded, some are ok on the tab, others have horrendous breakup. I've done as much research as possible into re-encoding these to suitable format but no matter what program and settings I use I can't get them to run properly. I'm getting to the stage of moving down the Ipad route. I'd post screenshots but apparentlly can't for another 8 posts
Did you get the large update to touchwiz recently? I actually started using the stock video player now, as I don't have any problems with the playback. Unless you are enconding in some off the wall format, I would think you wouldn't have any problems.
No on the touchwiz update as yet. I have limited net access in that some things are blocked. Glorious Afghanistan I'm checking every now and then as I can bypass somethings but it's not showing any updates.
In regards to video encoding I've used settings recommended in these forums and also trialled the pavtube program as well as numerous others including handbrake. Pulling my hair out over it!
i agree with you with the Video Support, coming from the Galaxy s phone the Tab almost doesn't play anything without converting and stuff on my phone it just play everything without a need for any video player other than stock

I had the same issue as you - pretty much everything I tried to play on the GT would break up or have other issues. I was about to return the tablet when I tried transferring a video over WiFi rather than Kies for the Mac. To my surprised it played flawlessly.
So, I rather suspect that your problem is Kies performing some sort of erroneous conversion on the video as it is transferring the video across to the tablet.
I don't use Kies for the Mac anymore, and always transfer files via WiFi, and seldom have any playback issues now.

If you transfer photos/movies from a MAC via the current version of kies then these get corrupted...
I'll try the wifi tip cheers. Although a friend has a 5 year old laptop that I tried the converted videos on and the same breakup occured through vlc. No probs with any of the encoded videos through vlc on my mac pro though.
Tried the wifi tip and works Shame it's a little on the slow side but it'll do till there's a better way
Kies is definately broken for the mac, it hasn't corrupted every video I transferred but enough to really annoy!

The Tegra 2 is not capable to decoding most HD video. The video accelerator (seperate from the GPU) is simply too slow and can not decode most h.264 profiles other than profiles which are obsolete (baseline for example)
Sorry folks, its not a problem with the actual software, its the Tegra 2 which is simply too slow to decode much of todays HD video.
Agreed. As an owner of both a Captivate and Tab 10.1 I am less than impressed with the video performance of this Tab. My Cappy blows it away.
Now the only thing the Tab has over the Cappy is support for legacy DIVX codecs. With the latest update all of my DIVX movies work. But the Cappy still runs laps over the Tab. A shame really. One step forward, two steps back.
You have to understand that Tegra 2 is a very old chip despite tablets just being released due to honeycomb delays.
All future tablet chipsets like the Tegra 3 and others will be able to decode any HD content without performance issues.

I won't count on that. The chipset used in Captivate is even older than Tegra 2. It's all about the drivers and matuality of the OS. HoneyComb just don't have much video codec support to be hornest. Tegra 1 chip in my Zune player plays 720p video better than Tegra 2 in my Tab. And there are 3rd party player app that can use Tegra 2 hardware acceleration to play videos that stock player can't. This is all software limitations in stock HC. Even when Tegra 3 comes out, HC as is will have the same limitation unless Google gets its act together.
I use dice player now, and my tab plays anything I throw at it. 1080p MKVs and avi files play awesome, even supports the multiple audio tracks and subtitles. No complaints here.
I personally don't need any more power in the tablet, it does everything I want it to do flawlessly.
Im considering purchasing an Iconia Tab, spec wise it's a decent all around tablet. What I want is how well will this supplement the rest of my household and mobile devices, can I use this as a fill in for my bulky lap top when I decide to not carry it around, how well will this stream videos across the hdmi port to my tv rather than buying another box for my entertainment system. Just info in general is what I seek, and who better to ask than you guys.
Yes this device is awesome.. Streaming thru hdmi does work . I have done so with much success .Thou there are limitations.. READ THE FIRST STICKY Thread . by Wearcat.. she is awesome with this type of stuff .

Not really looking for something to completely repalce my lap top as of yet, granted I havent turned it on really in months other than to charge one of my phones from time to time. Acer to me seems to build a reliable product, I have 2 17" laptops, and I purchased two Acer netbooks for my children. It looks like it would be a great supplement to the rest of my android fleet as well. Really just need something that I can take when I travel light, read emails, check my google voice, read books, watch a video here or there, more or less something to replace some dutie of my phone while at home and to replace some duties of my laptop while away. Will probly use it as gps too since its got a bigger screen would look great mounted in my truck OOOH better yet remove my radio and install bluetooth speakers with a custom built dash mount.

If you live in the US you're in for a treat as you can use Google Videos for renting and streaming movies and Google Music to store all your songs there and streaming them too so you don't have to use tablet's own storage space for them.
And yes, displaying videos through HDMI works just fine, though there are several limitations. Like for example, you will only get 720p output if you use non-default player, the default player is AFAIK the only one that can do 1080p output, but then again the default player doesn't support .MKV files or subtitles or anything.
As for actual movies themselves: the tablet only supports 1080p basic-profile, meaning that you will have to transcode almost everything you might already have. Not to mention that the tablet also doesn't handle AC3 audio, so again you will have to downmix audio first before you transfer the file to the tablet.
You have to decide for yourself if it's worth the hassle, but I would personally suggest getting a Tegra3 - based tablet instead even though it's more expensive, just to save you from the hassle from having to transcode everything. It really is a terribly hassle if you are a film buff like myself.

Most typically stream movies through my xbox, and my tv only plays at 720p so no 1080 for me as of yet. I did read your thread about the handbrake looks involved but not extremely advanced difficult. Thanks for your input think Ill go with this until the tegra 3 comes out then weigh my options then. Maybe by then Ill be able to get a new TV to compliment a new tablet.
And seriously you edited your post because of a missing semicolon? I bet it pains you to read the gibberish I just typed.

Yes she does...I think its so cute.her and a few of the guys are on me often for my lack of typing and spelling skills.
But they loves me so i not cry too often. Giggles.
The post for using Handbrake to convert the vids has worked perfectly fine on all the videos I have had to convert and is much easier to do than the instructions make it sound. The instructions are actually just really detailed, so there's less to do than what you read.
One of my favorite uses now for the tablet... I have a Super Nintendo again!. I finally got a wired generic PS3 remote, using some SNES emulator (forgot which), connected to my TV over HDMI, and some, um... "backed up" SNES games and BAM, full SNES center again. I am such a nerd for "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past".
Also, when I'm feeling really lazy, I use TeamViewer to remote into my HTPC and use it as my wireless keyboard/mouse. AND, if you have a Sony Media Streamer, there is a Android app to allow you to control your N100 or N200 from the tablet. Oh, and I read a lot of eBooks on it.
All in all, just as you mentioned, this tablet is a great "supplement", and since I never have the need for heavy duty computing while on the go, the tablet is all I've ever needed when I am not home. The main reason for me choosing this one ovr the others was the built in ports such as the miniUSB, USB, HDMI, and audio ports. Yeah those may have added a little girth and heft to the device, but those were bonuses for me instead of getting a device where you need to buy different adapters to have the same ports.

Then you should have no issues A500 works just fine for streaming movies, too, though there is no DLNA client on it by default. You can install one from the Market anyways so it's not such a huge issue.

It actually isn't all that difficult, I just rather write too much than too little when writing a guide or tutorial. Basically import profile, select file and press Start

Well I bought it last night and I gotta say what an amazing piece of hardware. I havent found a feature yet that I dislike. Seems to have ample computing power for what I need, and the display is fairly decent sems a little washed out on the white side but still good. Thanks for everyones help.

I have about 50 movies on my PC computer. Most were ripped from my DVD collection and are in .mkv format.
Will I be able to load them on my Nexus 7? Don't say upload them to a cloud and download them from there. This would take forever, the up speed of my (and most) ISP is slow. So how can I do this, can movies be transferred through the USB cable? OR, am I screwed?

Just connect your Nexus 7 to your PC with your USB cable and copy them over using Windows Explorer like you would with any other device. Really simple.

I read in this review that the microUSB port "was only for charging". It this is true than it can't be used for data transfer.

The Nexus 7 has wifi, so using an app you could either share a folder on it or access a share on your pc. Also someone said usb otg worked on Nexus 7 too

I'm pretty sure you can still use MTP to transfer data to and from a PC.
Edit: The official guidebook also confirms that you can do this.

Out of the box, the Nexus 7 can't read external storage and transfer files from USB hard drives and flash drives etc. Although you can root your Nexus 7 and install StickMount, which fixes that.
Drag and drop onto internal memory via USB cable. Nothin' else to it!

I did it just this weekend for a trip. Hook up usb, windows 7 recognizes it, drag and drop movies on.
The bigger problem I had was not enough space to copy everything I wanted but I was able to fit more than enough video for a 9 hour trip.
splashtop thd is supposed to allow you to run remote desktop on tegra3 devices. not sure how it works specifically since i havent got my nexus 7 yet, but if it doesnt require both devices to be on the same network, why not just leave your PC on, piggyback your nexus 7 off your phone's wifi hotspot and just remote watch the files from your PC?

If you don't want to physically move to your PC location, ES Explorer can easily find shares. Just cut and paste over wifi. Or if you prefer to push from your PC, then try Air Droid.
USB does not work properly with the KF ICS kernel (slow), so I got on the habit of just using wifi.
ES can also stream movies...if they are encoded on the right way.

When you conenct your device to you pC it will give you the option to file transfer. Just drag and drop the movies onto your device.
But 50 movies? That wont all fit
Most movies are 250-600 MB from my experience, and theres 1000 Mb in a GB. Its a 16 GB device but the OS takes up .66 so your left with 15.33. Your only gonna get like maybe 10-20 at the most if all you have is Movies on the USB STorage
It'll be a huge pain in the butt (cause the process is quite slow) but you can always transcode your videos down to a smaller size.
Make em 1 - 2gb each should be space to fit 5 to 10 movies for a 9 hr trip.

1-2 GB?!?! Movies are not over 1GB they are like 500 MB
what does everyone use to shrink them down to below a gig?
Its all about how the movie is encoded and what type. I have well over 1500 movies done. Blue ray done so maintain HD ends with 23.5 gig avg. Reg DVD around 900 meg. I can get them smaller in size but then would look like crap.

Most of the DVD ripped movies are 750mb - 1.4gb but the BD rips are 3gb - 5gb. When working with my iPad, there are programs that resize and transcode them to the best size/format for the iPad. I assume that such programs will be available for the N7 in a short time.
As this is a wifi device I just steam my movies from a NAS (or PC) I guess if you wanted to wtch them on a trip you could copy some to the device, but if your at home just stream.

Those 4 programs I mentioned above can do what you want, you can basically make any size, you just adjust the settings to shink down your movies.
Of course (and obviously) the lower the size, the lesser the quality. There's soooooo many settings in videos to reduce size. You change the audio from 5.1 down to stereo mp3, you can change the frame rate, you can change the bandwidth, you can change the color depth, you can change the encoding types and dozens more settings.
There is no "best" settings, everyone likes something different. Some people don't mind 480p videos, while others are fine with reducing the color depth or the bandwidth to still get 720p res.
With those programs you can customize your settings to make whatever suites you best.

Of course that guide is designed for a Tegra 2 but there's not tremendous difference between transcoding stuff for a Nexus 7. The Nexus has a high resolution equivalent to most 10 inch devices (such as the A500), so whatever is suitable on them will be plenty suitable on a Nexus 7 as well.
As for the guy with the 500mb movies... well... I guess some people just don't give a crap about quality at all. I for one am a bit more picky and therefore my movies are higher in size. As another user mentioned, most of mine are Blu-Ray rips. And the Nexus 7 has an HD screen. DVD's are lower resolution than what the Nexus screen can output so if you're only using DVD rips, you are losing quality, even on a small 7 inch screen, it's still a 720p HD screen. Some people don't care, I do. To each their own.
But the 4 programs mentioned above will do what you want. You just have to learn how to use them.
All are very good points. Each has his or her own preference.
Personally I like to keep the hi def stuff on the equipment and tech that can truly deliver that experience, like my home theater.
However when travelling I expect some loss of quality and have been fine with 720p or generally transcoding a specific set of movies down to 800mb-1.4gb depending on length and type of movie.
For the nex7 i would only see myself watching movies on it while underway, in flight, or long commutes. I also wouldn't expect to watch more than the battery life in movies in a single day, with that said i wouldn't need more than eight movies for a nine hour flight back to the mainland.
Like many have said, its all preference and what you need to get you through the day or week.
