Its Verizon, what did you expect? Look at the Verizon version of the iPhone, it always got its updates long after the AT&T version here. This was likely a requirement to get the phone on that network.
The HSPA+ version should be fine. Not to mention, why is this in the Atrix forum?
Because all android users should see whats happening to the nexus

Fair enough, but this is much more a Verizon issue than a Nexus issue. Anyone who has had any experience with that carrier knows that they are the most locked down of all four here in the US. It sucks that their Nexus is a bit watered down, but until proven otherwise we can assume that the HSPA+ version being sold in other parts of the world and hopefully will soon show up on T-Mobile/AT&T keeps the spirit Nexus devices are supposed to embody.
Besides, while a slippery slope, its only two apps. It could be worse. MUCH worse.

According to PhoneArea a Verizon spokeswomen has confirmed that they will be launching the Samsung Galaxy S II sometime next month.
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-S-II-confirmed-for-July-touch-down-at-Verizon_id19421
I'm sure AT&T will probably release it around the same time (if not sooner).
This is shocking...
"Although the phone will not be enabled for the LTE 4G network, it probably won't matter to potential buyers as the device has already proven itself to be speedy over 3G pipelines."
What's the purpose of launching a state-of-the-art phone that doesn't run on your state-of-the-art network? Hell, with EVDO, it'll be the slowest of the three U.S. SGS2 variants assuming it's Wi-Max on Sprint and 4G and/or LTE on AT&T. Why carry the phone at all?
Oh well, I don't even have 4G coverage here. By the time I do, I'll probably already be getting a new phone.
Also while I don't put much stock what an email from a Verizon spokesperson says, at least Verizon acknowledges the phone and it will at least come out eventually. I hope it really does come out in July though.
At least it will work on ATT's fake 4G HSPA+.
To work on Verizon's LTE would require a big redesign.

I thought it was supposed to be AT&T's first LTE phone? I read that online somewhere but can't find it now. AT&T was also supposed to be the first to launch so maybe the hold up is getting the LTE radio working. AT&T's LTE network is supposed to light up in a couple of weeks and they still have nothing that can run on it. Yet they're introducing a slew of high-end devices that work on a network that's outdated. Strange.
P.S. - Now that I think about it, it may be the combination of CDMA and LTE that prompted VZW and Samsung to skip LTE. That will still be strange though if Sprint's variant ends up being CDMA/Wi-Max.

Adding the LTE radio and chipset would probably require redesigning the phone. The current LTE phones are really big and thick.

Bad for AT&T but good for all of us who imported a non-branded SGS2. I assumed that AT&T's LTE version was going to make our phones (at least in the U.S.) outdated. If it ends of being the same phone with AT&T "enhancements" it makes our decision (and the price) worthwhile.
Excuse my ignorance, but what are the chances of the carriers making the phone better? I don't know how, just asking.
I don't know if i should just wait to see the differences with the ATT version or just buy the unlocked one now

Very close to zero. They will just add bloatware.
The only good thing is the subsidized price.

You guys need to realize JUST how hard it is to design and properly tune for LTE bands. I work in antenna design, and I can tell you it takes quite a bit to tune the noise down on the LTE frequencies. Add that to the fact that antenna real estate is already extremely tight in an ultra thin device like the SGSII (especially when taking GSM, WIFI, bluetooth, and GPS into account), the only way to get LTE in would be to have one/several of the other bands to suffer AND/OR make the device much, much thicker.
Until active antenna solutions are more readily available, this will continue to be a problem with passive antenna design, especially with small form factor devices like mobile phones.

Nexus One was appealing because it was stock and no bloatware. Now that Verizon has ruined the Nexus Galaxy, what phone should I get?
I would stick with my N1, but the touchscreen issues really slow down my typing and the light sensor has gone bad. I'm Tmobile and obviously willing to pay for unlocked phones and/or rooting to CM. Native-battery-percentage-4-life

Maybe the Galaxy S2 LTE or whatever it's called?

Uhm, I'm really not that familiar with service operators over in the united states, seeing as I'm from beyond the ocean. Sweden, actually, if you didn't notice the flag
I've heard mostly good about T-mobile, so maybe you ought to buy one of their phones?
But I've heard rumors saying the LTE will only be released here in Europe.

Galaxy note is very tempting, that or wait until next batch of phones with quad core, GS3 or other. I am probably going to cave and just get the GS2, it is a beautiful device even with the lower resolution.

I am beyond the ocean as well, but I believe LTE versions are typically only for CDMA based phones. So Verizon in the states uses LTE. GSM phones are the more common worldwide versions.
And to the OP, you can get a non-Verizon Galaxy Nexus, as long as you import it. As far as I am still aware, there are still no GSM versions of the Galaxy Nexus available in the states (at least through any carriers, some places may have imported them from Europe).
I too am eagerly awaiting CES. I am eligible for my upgrade with T-Mobile US in February (I am in a unique situation with them with me being overseas), and I hope they get something like the Galaxy Nexus but with a sdcard slot. I don't get why they wouldn't put that in there

Actually, I got it because I knew it would get the dev-love. I've been on custom roms since the day I got it (mostly CM). Stock Android is just as boring to me as bloatware would've been annoying to me - either way I don't have root.
Want to get a GN but are worried about bloatware? Get it and get a custom rom - it's so obvious what to do with a Nexus.
Article at engadget showing information about the SIII on the US carriers. Comes with the S4 processor and 2 gigs of RAM and the standard features.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/04/...rier-launch-att-verizon-sprint-t-mobile-uscc/
Thoughts?
I just hope they can keep the body style that same. It really takes away from the accessory market. Having 5 variants of the same phone is silly (minus the internal differences).

I wish they made 2 versions of the S3 just like the S2. One international-like version for people who don't even have LTE in their area and followed by the LTE version. I'd take quad core over LTE any day...
Sent from my AT&T SGSII on XDA
But the S4 dual core is no sloth...its a beast! plus 2gig of ram ...the thing will fly.
its might actually be better than the international model....especially if you are in an LTE area.
More cores doesn't necessarily mean more power keep that in mind... the S4 is still quite powerful for a mobile device. I do however hope that they keep the same exterior design on the US models. I don't think it will be too much different though... At least I hope not, though it does say that the different versions are customized for each carrier. We do know that T-Mobile is keeping the original design.

That can be easily photoshoped. However the sgs3 pics on att are more credible
Easily, Hell I could do it. Though out of the big US carriers I could see T-Mobile to be more likely to leave well enough alone than the others.
Even AT&T is using stock Samsung photos (No carrier branding.) So far only the Verizon version has been photographed.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/06/03/exclusive-photos-this-is-the-verizon-samsung-galaxy-s-iii/
most likely they will all look the same..especially with having such a close release date as the international model.
with the S2 it took like 6 months before the US model was released.

Nice find, if they are using stock photos I think they would probably go with an unaltered device. Misled customers tend to be pissed customers.
Either way, it's the International version for me.
Anyone else slightly disappointed with the nexus 4? I completely understand Google's logic behind gsm/hspa+ only. There is no cdma or LTE without working with carriers, and that means a locked device. I mean just look at the Gnex on sprint and verizion. It wasn't until around JB was announced that they brought the toro (Gnex on Verizion) back into AOSP support. The sprint GNex doesn't have AOSP support. So when Google wants to sell an unlocked phone which they can push updates too, using nearly all open source drivers, the only option is GSM and hspa+.
End game is unless Sprint decides to try and bring the Nexus 4 to their service, google won't do it. Thus I will just continue to use my hero and hope next year's Nexus device gets Sprint support.
Google could release it for Verizon as per FCC rules on the 700mhz C block, and Verizon would have to allow it on their network without any restrictions at all.
Personally I am going to move from Sprint to t-moile when I get the chance.
Simple poll, for those of us in the US, what carrier are you using your 6P on?
Right now I'm primarily using mine on Verizon, but also have a T-Mobile pre-paid SIM that I swap back and forth for testing.
Other - Project Fi in Southeast Michigan and loving it. Far better than Sprint (by that I mean just Sprint alone).
Carrier Selection
I am on Sprint, and honestly its been pretty smooth sailing. Even getting the phone up and running wasn't particularly hard either. Solid LTE in my neck of the woods.
I'm on Verizon because neither of the new Nexus phones support VoLTE or HD voice on AT&T. I live in a city so any of the four majors were viable options locally. My problem is that I do a lot of traveling to rural Appalachia and so I need one of the big boys if I want to be covered wherever I go.
Also, Verizon has been embracing unlocked devices of late (Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Moto X Pure, non-VZW-purchased Nexus 6, SIM-Free iPhone 6 and 6S bought from Apple). That combined with it not restricting VoLTE and HD voice made Verizon an easy choice.

i wouldn't say they've been embracing them. their hand was forced with the implementation of 4G. i haven't seen VZW update their image database with the latest models of carrier unlocked phones, so IMO they're not exactly "embracing" this idea.
on Sprint .. suprisingly connection has been better than it was with previous Note 4. Not getting super speed or anything but seems fast enough for majority of data stuff. Would like to try Project Fi but it would be more expensive going that route since I use too much data

AT&T and T-Mobile don't have images of unlocked phones either, with the odd exception here or there. And my Verizon account does show a picture of an iPhone 6S Plus for my SIM-free one that I bought from Apple (which is a different model and IMEI number set than the one Verizon sells). But, you're right, my Nexus 6P just shows up as "Huawei - H1511" with a generic device picture. A picture isn't what matters, though. What matters is that Verizon added the IMEI numbers for the 6P and 5X within a week or two of launch. That's huge for them. Considering where Verizon was even 2 years ago on the idea of unlocked phones vs. where they are now, they've taken a lot of strides. Even Sprint allows all of the same unlocked devices that Verizon does now. Sure, the FCC rules that Verizon agreed to in order to purchase those C block licenses was key in all this, but that doesn't necessarily make what I said any less true.
In the end, I think what's happening is that Verizon and Sprint are realizing that if the phone works on the network and someone wants to give them their money, they should allow the phone and take the money.

i bought my '13 Moto Xs as carrier devices. one was from Moto Maker and one direct from VZW. even back then, the idea of a carrier unlocked VZW device was few and far between. so happy to be out of the "we'll update your device when we feel like it" type mentality.
heck, i remember people used to choose their carrier based on device availability. the whole carrier exclusive things was a big PITA and i won't miss one bit of it. i can't wait for TV to catch on.

i think the reality tells a different story. if carriers still had the power to lock you in to their device/contract, they would continue to do so. cable companies lock you in to their own devices by restricting/encrypting the signal. once upon a time, all you needed was a tuner and an internet connection and you could get pretty much everything without paying them to "rent" their boxes.
even vehicle manufacturers are trying to "lock" you in to their infotainment systems by making them non-replaceable with non-standard components.

Well, yeah, but again, the fact that they WOULD do it is kind-of immaterial. They're not doing it. They're going the other way. The reasons for it aren't really terribly important. But yes, unchecked, companies will always try to lock you into their products and services. It's been happening for centuries. That's the art of making a profit.
