So come in here and let it out, stop trashing actual dev threads and turning everything off topic and getting it locked.

Will a custom kernel be a problem if I unroot and receive a OTA?
Or will the kernel be restored with my nand backup?
Kernels are restored.

How about if it ain't broke then don't fix it? How about leave things alone and quit reorganizing stuff on a whim? How about not making up rules that only apply to the nexus s section but not to any other phone sections? When the ns4g finally came out, we had to beg and make a big fuss about getting a little better organization and differentiation between the ns and ns4g in regards to roms. After it finally came, there was much happiness and joy because the fear of accidentally flashing the wrong rom had been relieved a little. Then a while later, it wasn't good enough the way it was. The dev section had to be changed. Roms started being considered if they were really custom or not. If they weren't made by members here directly, then that's a no no and they don't deserve to be in the appropriate dev section. They should be moved to general, have a scolding message added in the OP's post, telling them they aren't worthy of being in the dev section, then modifying the topic subject into an "awareness" subject? The rules are the rules but they don't apply to cyanogenmod. They don't apply to him because if it weren't for him and his crew, this place wouldn't be as popular as it is/was by a long shot.
With all the android phones I've owned: moment, evo 4g, epic 4g, evo shift, optimus s, and nexus s 4g, I've never had an angering experience with the babysitters until I got to this section. I've never seen things done that seemed ridiculous and like "shooting yourself in the foot" like here. I've never seen such heavy handed managing in similar forums. I've never seen as much locking, censorship and deleting of posts as I have here. The "less than" members in this section aren't having problems and butting heads very much with each other. A good amount of the problems we are encountering are from people that are "greater than" us. We (just members) aren't chasing devs and members off to either quit or go elsewhere.
So go ahead, send me stern and reprimanding pm's saying that my behavior is way out of control. Give me infractions and lots of points and make me stay after school. Mute or erase mine and other's comments. When worse comes to worse, expel us from the school of hacking phones. What I say won't change anything, I know that. I just wanted to get a few things off my chest. I keep coming back to this section, I don't know why, I must be a glutton for punishment.

It seems like as the Nexus One gets older and a new phone comes out every week some one is making a "who's switching" whether it be the G2 or the latest WM7 thread. Is it me or is it getting annoying? If you're going to leave the N1 or Android why do you need some one else to share your opinion or validate you leaving? When I bought my N1 in the G1 forums I didn't feel the need to post a thread saying okay everyone lets go!!! I just came to the N1 forum and didn't look back; ill do the same when I switch again. The point is if you're leaving just do it and don't clutter the n1 forum with your goodbye; go do the portion of xda that is dedicated to the next device.

Yeah I would have to agree. I could understand if they were wondering what others opinions were before switching, but alot of the time they have already made up their mind to switch and all they are really doing is trying to talk bad about everyone else's phone and sway others to their way of thinking so they feel better about their choice they already made by cluttering up the forum with threads that have nothing to do with the Nexus One.

I think this thread deserves a sticky, and all the "who's switching to what" threads buried under it.
Don't care about switching threads here at Nexus! You can post them in XDA General discussion >General section...
maybe a moderator will read this an suggest this to make it an over all rule because this can't be the only thread its happening on. I'm sure the g1 forums are the worst about it, now that everyones contracts are coming due.
+1 for a dedicated swingers thread.
Anyway, its human nature to want to share decisions, commonly referred to as Confirmation bias- google it, makes for an interesting read.
So sick and tired of all the clutter and silly threads. Now that XDA has gotten massive, its about time a lot of these threads should be put together.
Opinions are welcome and definitely needed, but when a genuinely interesting and useful thread is blocked by someone whingeing about how this phone didnt/did this...kind of defeats the purpose.
Its like your ex calling to tell you how good his/her new boy/girlfriend is and how he/shes glad to be rid of all the problems with you...sheesh.
Somebody should make a thread collecting threads by people very guilty of this. I imagine you could trace them back a few phones e.g. a touch diamond user complains endlessly of the their phone, moves to a nexus one and about how its so great, then bags it out and moves to a new phone and so on.... I'd read it . Would be interesting to see how perceptions change.

I have really appreciated all the hard work all the developers have done for the epic since I have purchased it in january. I really appreciated Ptfdmedics Roms, in response to that I will share Autism Awareness with the my Incredible 2 community by adding his banner to my Sig. I really did learn a lot from you guys, since I got my epic, I have worked on my fiance's old G1, her current hero, and my best friends EVO. Each one was a challenge in its own respects, and I couldnt have done it without you guys.
I just posted my Epic on Ebay, and will be getting the Incredible 2 here shortly. I am sad to be leaving sprint, but excited to be seeing the quality difference in coverage verizon supposedly has. I am not excited about my bandwidth limitations, since we missed the date for the unlimited amount.

I could write like five or six of these. I have come extremely close to trading this phone off for a shift or an evo. The first couple of times it didn't happen was because the deals fell through. Later on I figured out that i would lose voodoo and that gave me pause. Then EF02 came around and fixed most of my problems.
What later insured that i would stay were Anonymous rom i3 which gave my phone a new lease on life and worked great in almost every way. Lastly, independent tests showed the epic's radio is only slightly worse than most phones and doesn't have major issues like the evo3d and nexus s. I just have bad sprint service in my area.

^^This all day. I have absolutely no problem if someone chooses to leave for other pastures, don't really have any problem with someone who posts about it if/when they do so in the respectful and humble manner the OP did though I myself if it were me would just be gone and leave it at that.
The only issue I ever have with those who say 'goodbye' is those who leave and take the opportunity on their way out to gripe, moan and complain about everything the phone isn't/wasn't for them or everything else negative under the sun and even worse in some cases basically try and tell the rest of us that we're a bunch of ignorant sots for not packing our bags and moving on too. The OP did nothing remotely like that and deserves respect & kudos for the above board manner in which he's moving on rather than flaming (which is against the rules anyway, but its unjustified regardless in this case).

I am willing to bet that my son is older than most of the idiot wannabe mods causing issues. I was actually in a post yesterday where someone asked a question in Q&A and got slapped for not asking the question in the app/rom thread. This is starting to get very discouraging. To many people running amuck. I actually sent a email this morning suggesting that each section for the forums should have there own "off topic" then maybe some of this BS might stop. I also asked if they like the idea and implement it to move ptfmedic's thread to it and sticky it. I for one don't even go to the main page no need.

Here we have people that we have never seen on here before that are reporting things as being "off topic" or "against the rules" that have been going on for ages and it is just the regulars here sharing with each other. But because we are in a down period as we wait for Gingerbread, and these dummies have nothing else to occupy themselves with, they think it must be all this off topic stuff holding back a new rom or theme coming out. But what they are doing is driving off anyone who has actually ever contributed anything and making certain that by the time Gingerbread drops there won't be anyone left, with the knowledge to contribute something great, who's willing to put up with the shenanigans of these fools.
They are too self involved to realize that the people that make this great software and mods that we use only do it to be a part of this community, and to chat and share and learn from each other. The fact that some random person can come in and benefit from their work is a side effect, not the main intent of their hard work!

I think you may be wrong. If XDA was purely a developer forum, we'd have no reason for separate 'Development' and 'General' areas.
Like it or not, the mallcop wannabes lurking about can't pray to their personal unicorns and wish away the fact that XDA has grown into an ENTHUSIAST community, and general, unorganized discussion is a healthy way to foster friendly, casual relationships between regular visitors.
Dev or not.

There is a development section of the Epic forums. Maybe your time would be best spent there and not in the general section.
I completely understand that this is a development forum and we come here to read about android development. At the same time, the people that are contributing to the development section so far have been the people everyone's pissing off and booting/influencing to leave.
If a marine came back from IRAQ and ended up on CNN and said he's just glad to be back because he has a kid with AIDS at home and really needs to take care of him and would like to give everyone a site to check out childwithAIDSawareness. How surprised would you be if the news caster turned and say "whoa, let me stop you right there, these people tuned in to hear about the war, not your sick kid."

That example is a terrible fit for this situation. People posting about things not related to the epic aren't doing anything special for anyone. They are wasting XDA bandwidth and burying actual useful threads.
The best comparison would be if Casey Anthony went on the news to tell her side of the story and spent the entire time trying to advertise her book/movie/insert self indulging greed.

Only non of you develop for us.
After nearly a year with the Epic that I had high hopes for, I jumped... After the lack of updates/bug fixes and the little quirks that I learned to live with and even defend, as stupid as that is, I snatched an evo 3d from the net. I've had it about 12 hours and so far I dig it. Very smooth, no noticeable bugs yet and battery life seems to be good too.
I'm debating on keeping the epic and seeing how it performs when CM7 is or gingerbread is up but I really don't see me going back. Although, that display is excellent.

Probably not, but I've been lurking here for a long time, gathered lots of info and got a lot of help, which I appreciate. I'm sitting in a hotel, bored. Thought id post up in case anybody else is on the fence...

You should keep your Epic just in case you need a good camera. HTC cameras always sucked.
Since this is here, I feel the same way. I have so many problems with my Epic that I'm considering getting the N4GS, but I gotta dig into the forums to find out the most common problem it has

Yeah, wanted to love the epic, it was like a bad girlfriend tho.... I dug around the forum a bit and did some reading, considered a nexus or an epic touch but just couldn't bring myself to go with Samsung again. Got a good enough deal on this evo 3d that I'll barely have any out of pocket expense if I sell the epic. I will miss the screen and the keyboard but those weren't a good enough reason to continue dealing with the bugs.
Day two with this phone, can't put it down. Have had a few FCs with rss apps but life is good. Straight outta the box, everything works as it should, very responsive, fast and smooth. Don't see a need to bother with flashing anything.

Kool beans OP, I got sick of my friend talking about his Captivate being the $h!t on CM7 and my Epic still having issues all the time. I looked at the Epic Touch but just found it hard to deal with the footprint and the fact that work gave me a Droid x2 (biggest POS ever!) to carry, my pockets are only so big.
I'm rocking the iPhone 4 (regular) and I'm satisfied, hope this will work out till the new LTE phones debut.
Thanx to all the DEVs and users that found how to fix the $h!t Samsung/Sprint where incapable of fixing, with out you this phone would have just been an Epic Fail.
The design intent was good, just fell short for me as finished product. I guess after spending 4 years with IPhones I wanted a phone that worked as intended and only root/mod if I wanted to, not because I had to.
somebody dropped the ball....
I'm sure you will all be thrilled to hear that I'm going to keep hanging around and lurking, if
cm/gb/ics ever roll out it may sway my opinion...

Stock ec05 is the most BEAUTIFUL thing I've ever seen. Way better than ios. Have you ever just run stock? There's nothing wrong with it.
This is a message to everyone making threads like this. No one cares that you are leaving, you aren't helpful at all lurking for months and posting once every few months to *****, you don't deserve your own thread and special goodbyes and all you'll get is asinine jokes because its what you deserve.

Not much of a postwhore here, most of my contributions to this place were via pm.
If you don't like it, don't read or reply. Threads like this can be beneficial to others that are in the fence.

so they couldn't just read the many other useless threads like this one? Or you couldn't just post in off topic as was suggested earlier? No you need your own thread to say you aren't using the phone anymore even though there were more than likely thousands of customers to take your place today.

I have to agree with this. Unless your a DEV or someone on these threads everyday contributing and helping others, nobody cares. Just go in peace and thank you for coming. We have enough crap in General with lazy people that don't want to read asking "what's the besat ROM"!

If you don't like the post, SKIP IT. Don't come here and be a douche bag.
By posting to it, you're keeping it on the top. You're acting no better than the OP.
I for one like the idea of a general topic thread, but I don't understand why someone that trolls is not banned or their comments removed instead of closing the thread.

I agree completely. I'm not trolling with that statement either.
Honestly, now that we have 2 mods another thread COULD be opened. The probability of conflict due to misunderstandings, differences of opinion and, perhaps for some, dislike of a fellow member or members is still pretty high.
XDA stands for something special. It's a community of people trying to advance its knowledge through helping and sharing. Sometimes egos, not excluding mine, get inflated and the perceived need to stand up for what one feels is right becomes too much to let lie.
Sometimes people just throw out bait to see who bites. These instigators are known as "trolls."
The latter is frowned upon, but not necessarily wrong, as long as things aren't pushed too far. The former, well, good luck with that one. Remember that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Doing something wrong just to do it is not ok. Doing something wrong because you feel you are fighting for something important is another story. There is the letter of the law, and the spirit in which the law is written.
Again, I'm honestly NOT trolling.
The few should not be allowed to ruin it for the many.
It would be a great day for our XDA community if our senior moderators would embrace this philosophy and push for this change.

I, for one am guilty of standing up for myself on here. Take it or leave it. I don't let stuff ride. I'm not here to get respect or gain popularity. I do all that I do for fun and to give back. I'm known as a cocky s.o.b but I'm also known to help a fellow member out as much as my knowledge allows. I've spent numerous hours on talk, pm's and email helping people out that just quite can't get it. The thing that just makes me mad is when you see plain stupidity in your face. For example, I've seen at least a dozen people ask "Where is the low mic fix?" when if the person would search or read back 5 pages you'd find the answer. Back when this Glacier thread started you wouldn't even think of asking a question in the dev section without searching at least 10 times and if you asked such a dumb question you would get reprimanded and issued a infraction and your comment deleted. If I would get on someone now, they'd call me names and blah, blah, blah and the poop tossing would begin. The other day I was speaking out against what I thought was unfair in the general section and I don't take back any of it but to have me censored while idiots actually crowd the dev section with questions really made me mad. I have a change of heart now because the moderators are now getting back to the days of old and doing something about the useless posts. +1 to them. Since we had lack of moderating for 6 or so months, the "noobs" that are now senior members think its ok to do what they do and that's when I'm on your ****. Love me, hate me, I honestly don't gaf....end of rant.

I completely agree with you, I think part of it is people want the cool new stuff without actually reading and learning a thing or two; while it's understandable that you may not have time to look things up, we say these things for the benefit of users themselves. Trust me, the benefits of looking up things on your own and asking after you feel you've searched your ass off are far more greater than just being told everything. Going from releasing a port, to building from source, to being asked by awesome to join team inferno and learning some github all within my first few months of developing on my first and only android phone; I'd say I'm pretty good proof of how effective doing a bit of research is (seeing as I had no prior knowledge on how to do ANYTHING but flash a rom). It's not like you're being asked to read a 700 page documentation on the android system... and although better moderation required us to lose our BS thread and possibly some infractions to some long-time users, it's good that we're starting to get that old sense of moderation back...
tldr; XDA isn't here to hold your hand (so don't assume it is), but if you put some time into reading and learning the benefits are basically limitless.

i agree. the stupidity around here is just amazing. take the most recent one i've seen for example. i'm not going to name any names, but you know who you are.
this guy comes around and posts a question in the General Section. that's already a mistake. who doesn't know that Questions go in the Q & A Section? and then, since he didn't get any answers, he ventures on over to the Development Section, literally picks a random thread, and posts his question there. his question has NOTHING to do with what the topic is about. completely unacceptable. and then, when another forum member tells him that he shouldn't do that, what does he do? he goes on calling names. hey man, it's not our fault you have no respect for others. all this person could've done was just SEARCH. Google it, Bing it, Yahoo it, i don't care, you could've at least SEARCHED before you asked. yeah okay, maybe if you had only a few post counts, then i would forgive you, but no, this is a Senior Member, with over 200 posts! things like this shouldn't even happen from such an "experienced xda user". and i'm seeing things like this more and more everyday, not just in in Glacier forums, but pretty much everywhere else. noobs come along with only a few posts, and they see that they need 10+ posts to post in the Development Sections. so what do they do? they spam all the other sections and threads until they get more than 10 posts, then they begin spamming the Development Sections with their stupid questions that could've been answered by a search. and that's not all. since they can't spam the Development Sections with under 10 posts, they spam the DEVELOPER'S PMS. i have over 1000 PMs in my inbox, i'd say over 3/4 of them are useless garbage asked by idiots who are too lazy to search.
now about the off topic threads:
i really like the idea, it's a great way for forum members to hang out and have friendly chats for one another, but one thing i had noticed going on in the old BS Thread was that noobs with less than 10 posts would come here and post until they get 10 posts. i actually even read some other posts that encouraged this action. so while the off topic threads are great, they also have downsides to them as well.
IMO, we should just make it that you can only post in the Q & A Section until you have a certain amount of posts, cause honestly, most of the first few posts are just plain stupid questions that can be answered, by a simple search.

As for the off topic thread. I'll allow one of but once it gets hectic like the last one. *You know who I'm talking to* starting problems calling people etc, it's gone an infractions are handed out.
Yall decide in this thread, who will open it.
