Hello,
I recently bought a nexus one from Craigslist. I thought it hadn't been tampered with but it turns out that it is rooted. I read you can tell its rooted when theres an open lock underneath the nexus sign when loading it. I don't know how he rooted but its preventing me from updating to the pinch and zoom capabilities. Always get (status 7) error. So I want to unroot the phone, update it then perhaps later root it. Is there a way I can unroot it with a Mac?
Thanks for the help!

It's rooted without an unlocked bootloader? I doubt that, or maybe you have the only one in existence.
You can always just flash this:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/hy2yj42my3i/gapps-passion-ERE36B-2-signed.zip
in recovery and you'll get the multitouch update.

How do I update it then? I have always gotten (status 7) error. Better yet how do I unroot it? Any ideas?
As of right now, theres no way to unroot a phone. But if I were you, id consider upgrading it to CyanogenMod (search in nexus one development for it) that enables the multi-touch capabilities.
Its not possible
The best you could do is this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614850
But anyway, why unroot, a rooted phone is much better
How about you look around the site and see wah u can actually do with your phone now
Just look for modaco's 1.7 , download it. Put your phone into recovery by powering down then hold volume down, down while holding that down press n hold power button. A white screen should come up. Leave it be until the green lettering disappears. Then press volume down to navigate to "recovery". Once in recovery use trackball to navigate to USB toggle . Click on it via trackball. Now plug ur phone into your comp via micro USB cable. Go to "my computer" on ur comp. Double click removable disk to open ur SD card. Delete everything from ur SD. Go to where u saved modacos 1.7 drag it to your empty SD card. Now click ur track ball to disable USB connection. Unplug your phone. Go to wipe. Click on it with ur track ball. Now click wipe data. Let it do its thing. Then wipe dalvik cache. Let it do its thing. After that push volume down to get back to ur menu. Go to flash update. Click on it and click on the zip you just put on ur Sd card. Let it do its thing and you're done.
1. Download a ROM of your choice, and then load it on to your SD card in the root directory.
2. Shut the phone off.
3. Hold down the volume down button, and hit + hold the power button at the same time.
4. Continue holding until the phone boots up
5. Scroll down to recovery by hitting the volume down button once.
6. Press the power button once.
7. Scroll down with the scrollball to Wipe
8. Wipe device/factory reset
9. Wipe cache
10. Click the volume down again
11. Scroll to Flash update/zip
12. Scroll to the ROM you downloaded and loaded to your zip, and then click
13. Click the trackball again to accept.
Now, you really just have to make sure the ROM you downloaded has the pinch to zoom, which most have. I don't believe you'll lose root, but you should at least gain the features you're looking for.
Your Nexus One is unlocked, not rooted. There is difference.
Thanks everyone for the help! I ended up needing to install the Amon RA recovery image and then installed the MoDaCo ROM. Works good but I read that Cyanogen is better with better features. I think I will now install the Cyanogen ROM. Not sure what he means by updating the radio if needed though. My radio is RADIO-4.02.02.14
If anyone knows if this is ok then I would appreciate it, I will try to research and see if it's ok too.
Thanks again!
Remember to do a nandroid backup in case you either screws something up or you wish to go back to your previous Rom (saves time and headache).
As far as i know updating the radio is optional, you just download it, nandroid backup, update like a rom, and reboot, IMPORTANT ON REBOOT IT WILL GO TO A LOADING SCREEN WHERE IT UPDATES THE RADIO DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING OR PULL BATTERY OR YOU MAY BRICK YOUR PHONE-FOR REAL. With that said after the radio loads it will take you back to recovery, then nandroid again if you want(never hurts), wipe and flash cyanogens rom then the gapps add on and then reboot and youre good to go.
I just download all the files but I noticed that the radio is a .img file
Not sure how I can install it... any suggestions?
This is a Step-by-Step fool proof guide to getting your T-Mobile myTouch 3g (32b) back to factory firmware with the ability to once again receive all official T-Mobile OTA (Over-The-Air) Updates.
*Note* There are two files named updated.zip that are both needed. We will keep them seperated by two folders needed at two totally different steps during installattion. The fisrt gets us back to 1.6 and the other gets us the newer radios for1.6...and Yes it works. Files are official....Nay-Sayers! LOL
*Note*
Optional SD Card Format
From the settings menu of the phone, Scroll down to "SD Card & phone storage." Press "Unmount SD Card." Next press "Format SD card." If you go this route you will have to reinstall all media you had on the SD Card, i.e. pics, music...etc
STEP 1
Create a Folder named ANDROID on the desktop. In that create 3 sub-folders. Name the 3 sub-folders in this order: Cupcake, Donut Update 1, Donut Update 2
STEP 2
You need a copy of SAPPIMG.img. It puts the phone back to the "Cupcake" or 1.5 Firmware Version.
Download it from:
http://www.mediafire.com/?yezotmjyuww
Save it in the Cupcake folder you just created.
STEP 3
Plug your phone into your PC and click "USB Connected" on the Notification Tab, then mount image. Your PC can now read and write to your SD Card. Find your downloaded copy of SAPPING.img and copy it to your SD Card. Unmount, unplug and power off your phone.
STEP 4
Reboot phone into boot mode by holding down volume down key while pressing the power key. It should boot into HBOOT and automatically run the SAPPIMG.img you just copied onto the SD card Click. Follow the onscreen instructions to initiate the automated update. Use trackball to accept.
If it did not boot to HBOOT, read the screen and do what it says to "Reboot to HBOOT." From there everything else should once again be automated. Follow the onscreen instructions to initiate the automated update. Use trackball to accept. Once the update is done and it says "Installation Complete," reboot by pressing Home and Back buttons together.
STEP 5Once rebooted, do the initial setup. Once setup is complete, plug the phone back into the PC and re-mount the SD Card. It is safe to delete the SAPPIMG.img file from the SD Card now. You can also check to make sure the Firmware Version 1.5 is correct and installed by going to Settings-> About phone.
STEP 6You need to Download the second file needed named update.zip. It gets us back to Android 1.6
Download it from:
http://www.mediafire.com/?t3zlwdzzqqx
Save it in Donut Update 1 folder. Once download is complete, copy the file update.zip to the SD Card like before. Unmount, unplug, and power off the phone.
STEP 7Reboot the phone into recovery mode by this time holding down the Home and Power buttons together this time. A picture with tirangle and phone will show press Home and Power again to get to the actual recovery screen. You now have 2 options to apply this update...either or:
*Note* Use trackball to navigate the cursor in this new menu
1. Apply update.zip from SD Card. This option will leave all user data that you previously put on the phone after the SAPPIMG install, i.e. Contacts, Apps, Settings...etc.
2. Wipe/Factory reset. This option will completely remove all user data from the phone. A clean slate if you will. If you choose this option, when the reset finishes, Make sure you do Option 1 Apply update.zip from SD Card. Once the update is done and it says "Installation Complete," reboot by pressing Home and Back buttons together.
STEP 8
Once rebooted, if you chose option 2 in the previous step you have to redo the initial setup. Plug the phone back into the PC and re-mount the SD Card. It is safe to delete the update.zip from the phone now. You can also check to make sure the Firmware Version 1.6 is correct and installed by going to Settings-> About phone.
STEP 9
You need to Download the third file needed named update.zip. It gets us back the latest radios.
Download it from:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ojnnyrjzneg
Save it in Donut Update 2 folder. Once download is complete, copy the file update.zip to the SD Card like before. Unmount, unplug, and power off the phone.
STEP 10 = Finale
Reboot the phone into recovery mode by this time holding down the Home and Power buttons together this time.
That is it!
Now you are good to go and are waitng for T-Mobile and their 2.0 or whatever other goodies they decide to throw or not to throw our way.
Didn't work for me. Step 4 did not install. Instead, it said "invalid signature"

So go look at another post! Just that simple.
once you get to cupcake you can just wait a couple hours then you will get an ota update to update to doughnut and the newest radio so i dont see the point in doing all of this work when just isntall cupcake and wait
Great thread! This is much better than waiting for the ota updates!
no ota to 1.6
I have been on 1.5 for 24hrs and no ota back yo 1.6?
Then follow the steps to manually flash the updates from here that is what o did.
Technically I think the updates are only if you have internet with tmobile and can take up to 72 hours.

Never took me more than 24 hours.
Restoring data with mybackup or titanium backup can actually prevent the update from installing, so if you're not getting it, do a factory reset and don't install anything that isn't from the market until you've received your update.
Does this method also remove the Recovery?
Can I install just the stock rom but keep my recovery? If I do this, will it disable my ability to flash custom roms without re-exploiting the phone?
Thanks phate
I just did this but now I'm stuck at the green android welcome screen with no data service and I'm out of the country. Am I pretty much ****ed? Four corners trick doesn't seem to work. Tried it like a hundred times.
Well this did not work out so well.
Everything seemed to go fine. After the last step, rebooted the phone, and it came up with a picture of a box with an arrow, so I just let it sit there. Came back an hour or so later and the screen was off. No charging light or anything.
Pressed power button and nothing. Tried everything I can think of. So do you think I bricked the phone some how or did the phone just die.
Oh, Battery was fully charged, and it was plugged in while doing the downgrade from CM 6 back to stock.

If the phone refuses to boot you could always apply sappimg.nbh again and this time just let it download 1.6 ota. It only takes about a day or so.

It's just DEAD.
Edit: I've tried two other batteries and another charger also.
Anyone who has used this method to downgrade, or someone using stock firmware, could you enter the phone information menu by dialing *#*#info#*#* tell me what call redirect says, true or false? I want to verify something.

anyways on the one that worked, Call Redirect: false
And can anyone help with the other phone?
when plugged in to either computer or A/C, there is no charge light,
read a couple posts above for more info on the problem I am having.

Hey guys, I have done a ton of reading and researching about modding android phones since recently migrating from iPhones. I got a Droid1 and did some basic root/rom/overclock etc.
I just got a DX a few days ago and right away decided to start with the modding. Anyways, In a nutshell I attempted to go about the ROMing process in a similar manner to my Droid1 and ended up going to the Rubix1.6 ROM without ever backing up my stock OS.
I wanted to be able to jump back and forth to a blurless/blurred ROM to get a good feel for what I want outta it but am not sure how I should go about getting the stock OS stuff back on. I've read up about the SBF, but is that the only way to go?
Thanx for any help guys, greatly appreciated.

Sadly, yes. Since you didn't back up before you started you will have to SBF to get a stock ROM. Be sure to make a nandroid of your modded ROM, SBF, root, backup, then flash back and forth.
Now as far as a Nandroid backup you mean just a backup through clockwork recovery correct?

Ok So I did it and restored nicely after doing a wipe after.. Now I can't ACTIVATE my phone. Any ideas why it would mess with the activation. When I hit activate and then 1 it just says to enter the number.. SHIIT

the activation system has been down for a few hours now. You can try *22899. Or do it online here http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/activate. Or just call the 1800 number and do it with a csr.
Ok, I'm hoping it is just a bad coincidence that the activation server is down. I'll pack it up and try again in the morning. If that's what it is then I am all set otherwise. Thanx!

of course it's just a coincidence. flashing a rom or doing an sbf to your phone does not cause the verizon activation system to crash. lol. whenever you sbf your phone or do a factory reset, you have to do the *228 to reactivate. thats normal.
Just some info... when I wipe out my phone and boot it up (skipping) activation it works already. Found this out by wiping my phone, booting it up, and I got a text message immediately. Lol.

Just consider your SBF your 2.3.15 backup copy. It's not a pain. It's easy and it should be a tool in every modder's arsenal. IMO, people who don't know how to sbf, are destined to have to anyway, eventually, if they mod enough. The only thing is that when they have to, they won't know how and will kinda panic. I say be ready to sbf before you root, so you're ready when trouble comes.
Me? I love modifications and will sometimes go too far or make a mistake at 2 am, when I really should be sleeping instead and I wind up bricked. No problem. Just SBF and I'm on my way. If you need further info or how to's feel free to ask.

Here's what I used to guide me through the sbf...
Here is a link to the guide I used. It is for the 2.1 SBF though.
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/09/21/droid-x-stock-android/
Here are the instructions with my modifications for 2.2...
IMPORTANT!!! - the directions are for restoring 2.1 so you do not do some of the steps! They were the best I could find. I followed them except for things that did not apply.
instructions:
1. First off, choose the right version of Motorola USB drivers for your computer and install them (32bit) (64bit)
2. Download & install RSD Lite 4.7 (download)
I did not use 4.7 as it is not current. I used 4.9
You will need to patch this after installing. There is an .ini file included in the folder that needs to be placed in your install directory. /Program Files/Motorola/RSD Lite
I used 4.9 and did not have to patch any files- the above step was unnecessary.
3. Download the Droid X Android 2.1 SBF file, which you can find here
of course I used the 2.2 SBF file here...
http://rootzwiki.com/
4. Unzip the SBF file to your desktop
i did not unzip mine to the desktop- i put it where i stash my android files- it made no difference.
5. Run RSD Lite, and click the “…” button, then find the SBF file that you just unzipped to your desktop and select it.
Starting here i followed the directions to the "t". Went through all the steps. !!!!!MAKE SURE YOU START WITH 100% BATTERY!!!!!! It takes a long time and if your phone dies during the process it is a nightmare.
6. Plug your Droid X into your computer and power it down
Go into the Bootloader (with phone off, hold the CAMERA button and VOLUME DOWN, then hit the POWER button)
After holding for 2-3 seconds, release the buttons and RSD Lite should recognize your Droid X
7. Click the start button to flash Android 2.1 to your phone.
of course we are flashing 2.2
8. When the flashing is complete, unplug your phone
The Droid X will likely not boot up all the way, so pull the battery out
Put the battery back into the phone and reboot into Recovery mode ( Hold the HOME button and press POWER until you get an exclamation mark. Release the HOME button and press the SEARCH button)
Using the VOLUME UP/DOWN buttons, navigate to “wipe data/ factory reset” option on the screen, and press the CAMERA button halfway down to execute.
When complete, choose to reboot your phone
9. It takes a while. Hope this helps. And I hope it goes smoothly. It was nerve racking for me. After you have finished the process you will not be rooted. Use the market app "Z4root" or which ever method you prefer.
good luck.

C. UnBRICKING INSTRUCTIONS:
HELP ME. Ima noob! I BRICKED MY PHONE!
1. go to Home and DL the leaked full OTA FROYO 2.2 .SBF file.
2. Download and install RSDLite v4.8 (it should be on Home if not, go Google it.)
3. If your phone is stuck on the load screen, pull the battery, wait a minute, push the battery back in and restart with the phone’s Boot Loader Mode (do this by pressing the red camera button + volume down + power button hold all of them in the order that I stated until your phone flashes briefly). Your phone should flash white and a Boot Loader menu will come up. Make sure there is at least 20 to 25 percent battery life remaining in order for the reformat of you phone to complete. If your phone dies in the middle of this process GOD HELP YOU.
4. Run the RSDLite File and connect your Droid X to your computer via USB.
5. Browse for the .SBF file you downloaded in step 1 and click “Start”, at which point the program should run and your phone will proceed to unbrick
6. EASY RIGHT?
7. Once unbricking you will have to go through reactivation of your phone. This is normal so just go through the steps you did when you first started.
8. GUESS WHAT? You made a backup of your previous customizations REMEMBER? If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of re-downloading your entire life onto your phone again follow the “ROOTING” instructions in Part A and redownload Bootstrap and reboot into recovery mode to RESTORE the backup you made by following steps 2-11 in Part B….except you won’t be going to “install from sdcard” you will going to “Backup and Restore” and “Restore from sdcard”.

did you put the patched pst_flash.ini file in the rsdlite install directory?
I put that file in program files>motorola>rsd lite. I did it after installing the program if that matters. The zip file folder name was RSD Lite 4.7+Patch. Also, in RSD Lite in order for the program to recognize my droid x i had to select the "first come first serve device id mode" under the device id options in the config menu. Don't know if this matters, just trying to give as much info as possible. Thanks.

yea, you can only do it after installing the program. it has to be closed though when you do it and you have to overwrite existing file. if you did all that properly, then it may be a corrupted sbf. I would just install rsdlite 4.8 or 4.9 and retry. those dont require a patch.. if no workie, then redownload sbf.
rsd lite 4.8 is here http://www.multiupload.com/HL0ZAL9GK8
I can't remember the order I did it in so I'll re-install with the instructions you gave. Thank you! I'll report back.
Hi guys,
I'm a bit lost and unsure what to do.
I installed GummyJar, and like an idiot, didn't read that I need to be on 2.3.320 or 2.3.340.
I was previously on ZapX for 2.2 (purchased phone in early October). So I'm not sure what to do. Is there an SBF that will directly put me on 2.3.340? Would it be wiser to flash to my original SBF (the_gift2.zip I believe), and let my phone automatically get the OTA update?
I'm not really sure what the best thing to do is.
Thank you for any advice and help.
Did you create a back up before you installed Gummy? I know that is praobably a stupid question since you are asking how to SBF -but I thought maybe you didn't think about restoring your backup?
How to perform the sbf:
I did this. It worked for me. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF THIS DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU OR IF YOU MUFF IT UP.
ok- so here is the link that I used as a guide - IMPORTANT!!! - the directions are for restoring 2.1 so you do not do some of the steps! They were the best I could find. I followed them except for things that did not apply.
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/09/21/droid-x-stock-android/
instructions:
1. First off, choose the right version of Motorola USB drivers for your computer and install them (32bit) (64bit)
You probably have already done this.
2. Download & install RSD Lite 4.7 (download)
I did not use 4.7 as it is not current. I used 4.9 download here...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7782384/RSD%20Lite%204.9.rar
3. You will need to patch this after installing. There is an .ini file included in the folder that needs to be placed in your install directory. /Program Files/Motorola/RSD Lite
I used 4.9 and did not have to patch any files- the above step was unnecessary.
4. Download the Droid X Android 2.1 SBF file, which you can find here
of course I used the 2.2 SBF file. Make sure you use the right sbf file or you will really be hosed!!! if you are on 2.2 you can get the full sbf file from here...
http://rootzwiki.com/index.php/Main-Page/Droid-X-Full-2.2-SBF.html
5. Unzip the SBF file to your desktop
i did not unzip mine to the desktop- i put it where i stash my android files- it made no difference.
7. Plug your Droid X into your computer and power it down
8. Go into the Bootloader (with phone off, hold the CAMERA button and VOLUME DOWN, then hit the POWER button)
9. After holding for 2-3 seconds, release the buttons and RSD Lite should recognize your Droid X
10. Click the start button to flash Android 2.1 to your phone.
of course we are flashing 2.2
11. When the flashing is complete, unplug your phone
12. The Droid X will likely not boot up all the way, so pull the battery out
Put the battery back into the phone and reboot into Recovery mode ( Hold the HOME button and press POWER until you get an exclamation mark. Release the HOME button and press the SEARCH button)
13. Using the VOLUME UP/DOWN buttons, navigate to “wipe data/ factory reset” option on the screen, and press the CAMERA button halfway down to execute.
When complete, choose to reboot your phone
14. It takes a while. Hope this helps. And I hope it goes smoothly. It was nerve racking for me. After you have finished the process you will not be rooted.
15. good luck.
Thank you very much. An extra question to go along with this.
Once I SBF, I'm assuming I'll be back at stock (ick). How long will it take for the OTA to apply? Can I manually update it from there?

Well- of everything goes right you should be able to go to your phone settings, scroll down to the bottom to "About phone", then "System updates". You should be able to manually update from there.
If you get a "your device is up to date message," then something went haywire. Hopefully that won't happen.
Oh yeah - here is the link for "z4root" -you can use it to root your phone after the update...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7782384/z4root.1.3.0.apk
If your phone won't manually update, there is an update.zip floating around here. I have it - but not on the computer I am currently working from -sorry.
Again I want you to know - I am not an expert at this - if something goes wrong I will not be able to help you fix it (probably). I just followed the guide and it worked for me. So if something happens when you follow the guide -I am sorry but I won't be much help.
Thank you. Everything took about 2 hours (SBFing, downloading and installing update, reinstalling apps, etc), and I have the newest Kernel version from the OTA update, and GummyJar 2.5 back on.
I had a bit of trouble SBFing, it kept failing for some reason, but I found a fix via googling around the various Droid forums.
Thank you again, you've been extremely helpful.

Ever since I went to get a new evo at sprint (I shattered the screen on my previous one) iv been getting horrible data speeds, and when i restored it to cyanogen 7 it never says i have 3g service no matter where I go, before I got the new evo I was running the exact same rom and would get 3g service, any help? Ive tried using mys warm two point two, cyanogen nightlys every rc, and stock rooted and I cant get good speeds at all.
Try this... I posted it yesterday as its own thread but its already fallen to the depths if the forum...
I've been running CM7 since it was being compiled by lithid. At some point my 3G broke and I tried to ask for help but never could find a complete answer. At some point someone said the words "##data#" and "call sprint." Below is a step by step guide to what I did to fix 3G and it's been working through numerous wipe/flashes since. If someone already posted this information I apologize. This has worked for me and at least one other person that I know of, so hopefully it doesn't ruin anyone's phone.
1. Download MSL Reader from market, run it and write down results.
2. Nandroid current rom.
3. Flash cauklins format all
4. Flash latest rooted OTA (I found one in the wiki)
5. Boot OTA (I skipped all of the google login/set up stuff)
6. Enter ##3282# (##data#) in to the dialer.
7. Menu will popup select "Edit Mode"
8. Enter MSL when it asks for password.
9. Tap "Data Profiles"
10. Tap Menu button, then "Restore"
11. Phone will reboot in 10 seconds or you can click ok.
12. Hands free activation will come up shortly after phone reboots, then PRL update and Firmware update. (It found no frimware updates I think because I used the latest OTA) Let it process all.
13. Power phone off.
14. Boot to bootloader (hold power + vol down)
15. Select recovery.
16. Flash format all again.
17. Nand restore.
18. Enjoy working 3g.
I did all this the first time on the phone with sprint. As soon as I booted the OTA I had 3g again, I just told them it was broken and they gave me the steps. I just did it all again while typing this to verify that it works rather than try to rely on my memory of what i did.
Hope this helps. I also did the ##gpsclrx# while I had that sprint garbage installed.
If these are instructions to seriously break your phone, can someone who knows better than me please correct me. So far I've had no problems, other than fixed 3G

From what I've seen it seems to only happen to those with 0004 hardware
