[Q] Advice for SBF restore.

Hey guys, I have done a ton of reading and researching about modding android phones since recently migrating from iPhones. I got a Droid1 and did some basic root/rom/overclock etc.
I just got a DX a few days ago and right away decided to start with the modding. Anyways, In a nutshell I attempted to go about the ROMing process in a similar manner to my Droid1 and ended up going to the Rubix1.6 ROM without ever backing up my stock OS.
I wanted to be able to jump back and forth to a blurless/blurred ROM to get a good feel for what I want outta it but am not sure how I should go about getting the stock OS stuff back on. I've read up about the SBF, but is that the only way to go?

Sadly, yes. Since you didn't back up before you started you will have to SBF to get a stock ROM. Be sure to make a nandroid of your modded ROM, SBF, root, backup, then flash back and forth.

Now as far as a Nandroid backup you mean just a backup through clockwork recovery correct?

yea. a nandroid backup is the backup you create in cw recovery

Ok So I did it and restored nicely after doing a wipe after.. Now I can't ACTIVATE my phone. Any ideas why it would mess with the activation. When I hit activate and then 1 it just says to enter the number.. SHIIT

the activation system has been down for a few hours now. You can try *22899. Or do it online here http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/activate. Or just call the 1800 number and do it with a csr.

Ok, I'm hoping it is just a bad coincidence that the activation server is down. I'll pack it up and try again in the morning. If that's what it is then I am all set otherwise. Thanx!

of course it's just a coincidence. flashing a rom or doing an sbf to your phone does not cause the verizon activation system to crash. lol. whenever you sbf your phone or do a factory reset, you have to do the *228 to reactivate. thats normal.

Just some info... when I wipe out my phone and boot it up (skipping) activation it works already. Found this out by wiping my phone, booting it up, and I got a text message immediately. Lol.

Just consider your SBF your 2.3.15 backup copy. It's not a pain. It's easy and it should be a tool in every modder's arsenal. IMO, people who don't know how to sbf, are destined to have to anyway, eventually, if they mod enough. The only thing is that when they have to, they won't know how and will kinda panic. I say be ready to sbf before you root, so you're ready when trouble comes.
Me? I love modifications and will sometimes go too far or make a mistake at 2 am, when I really should be sleeping instead and I wind up bricked. No problem. Just SBF and I'm on my way. If you need further info or how to's feel free to ask.

Hey just got my replacement x today already rooted and have fly x on it. The sbf back up category is my only weakness. When my phone goes belly up im kinda lost. Do you have or know of any threads walktbroughs on bow to.bring a bricked phone back to life. Im putts replacements for this year through asurion and will have to do this if im bricked again. I was stuck on the tranquility logo couldn't get out. Thanx.

Here's what I used to guide me through the sbf...
Here is a link to the guide I used. It is for the 2.1 SBF though.

Here are the instructions with my modifications for 2.2...
IMPORTANT!!! - the directions are for restoring 2.1 so you do not do some of the steps! They were the best I could find. I followed them except for things that did not apply.
instructions:
1. First off, choose the right version of Motorola USB drivers for your computer and install them (32bit) (64bit)
2. Download & install RSD Lite 4.7 (download)
I did not use 4.7 as it is not current. I used 4.9
You will need to patch this after installing. There is an .ini file included in the folder that needs to be placed in your install directory. /Program Files/Motorola/RSD Lite
I used 4.9 and did not have to patch any files- the above step was unnecessary.
3. Download the Droid X Android 2.1 SBF file, which you can find here
of course I used the 2.2 SBF file here...

4. Unzip the SBF file to your desktop
i did not unzip mine to the desktop- i put it where i stash my android files- it made no difference.
5. Run RSD Lite, and click the “…” button, then find the SBF file that you just unzipped to your desktop and select it.
Starting here i followed the directions to the "t". Went through all the steps. !!!!!MAKE SURE YOU START WITH 100% BATTERY!!!!!! It takes a long time and if your phone dies during the process it is a nightmare.
6. Plug your Droid X into your computer and power it down
Go into the Bootloader (with phone off, hold the CAMERA button and VOLUME DOWN, then hit the POWER button)
After holding for 2-3 seconds, release the buttons and RSD Lite should recognize your Droid X
7. Click the start button to flash Android 2.1 to your phone.
of course we are flashing 2.2
8. When the flashing is complete, unplug your phone
The Droid X will likely not boot up all the way, so pull the battery out
Put the battery back into the phone and reboot into Recovery mode ( Hold the HOME button and press POWER until you get an exclamation mark. Release the HOME button and press the SEARCH button)
Using the VOLUME UP/DOWN buttons, navigate to “wipe data/ factory reset” option on the screen, and press the CAMERA button halfway down to execute.
When complete, choose to reboot your phone
9. It takes a while. Hope this helps. And I hope it goes smoothly. It was nerve racking for me. After you have finished the process you will not be rooted. Use the market app "Z4root" or which ever method you prefer.

i really appreaciate the guide and quick response im going to try to save these for future refrence.

just tried this method for the experience on the droid i bricked. worked like a charm was a bit easier too. phone rebooted on its own. i wiped just to make sure since i need to send it back to vz i already got my replacement. but this definetly gives me a little more confidence knowing i can bring it back from the dead if i have to. thanks again.

C. UnBRICKING INSTRUCTIONS:
HELP ME. Ima noob! I BRICKED MY PHONE!
1. go to Home and DL the leaked full OTA FROYO 2.2 .SBF file.
2. Download and install RSDLite v4.8 (it should be on Home if not, go Google it.)
3. If your phone is stuck on the load screen, pull the battery, wait a minute, push the battery back in and restart with the phone’s Boot Loader Mode (do this by pressing the red camera button + volume down + power button  hold all of them in the order that I stated until your phone flashes briefly). Your phone should flash white and a Boot Loader menu will come up. Make sure there is at least 20 to 25 percent battery life remaining in order for the reformat of you phone to complete. If your phone dies in the middle of this process GOD HELP YOU.
4. Run the RSDLite File and connect your Droid X to your computer via USB.
5. Browse for the .SBF file you downloaded in step 1 and click “Start”, at which point the program should run and your phone will proceed to unbrick
6. EASY RIGHT?
7. Once unbricking you will have to go through reactivation of your phone. This is normal so just go through the steps you did when you first started.
8. GUESS WHAT? You made a backup of your previous customizations REMEMBER? If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of re-downloading your entire life onto your phone again follow the “ROOTING” instructions in Part A and redownload Bootstrap and reboot into recovery mode to RESTORE the backup you made by following steps 2-11 in Part B….except you won’t be going to “install from sdcard” you will going to “Backup and Restore” and “Restore from sdcard”.

HELP Please - Error running SBF in RSD Lite
First off, I'm a newbie, so please go easy on me if these are dumb questions. I get the following error while trying to run "VRZ_MB810_2.3.15_1FF_01.sbf" in RSD Lite 4.7 while in boot mode. I don't know what else to do. My phone won't work. Thank you for any advice you can give.

did you put the patched pst_flash.ini file in the rsdlite install directory?

I put that file in program files>motorola>rsd lite. I did it after installing the program if that matters. The zip file folder name was RSD Lite 4.7+Patch. Also, in RSD Lite in order for the program to recognize my droid x i had to select the "first come first serve device id mode" under the device id options in the config menu. Don't know if this matters, just trying to give as much info as possible. Thanks.

yea, you can only do it after installing the program. it has to be closed though when you do it and you have to overwrite existing file. if you did all that properly, then it may be a corrupted sbf. I would just install rsdlite 4.8 or 4.9 and retry. those dont require a patch.. if no workie, then redownload sbf.

[Q] Update to 2.3.340 fails after reboot

I got a DX a few months ago, rooted it, etc. About a month ago I decided to go ahead deodex it. Installed CWM and did a backup first, then deodexed. During the process the instructions said to copy the guava.odx file out of the modded fileset, so I did. Everything seemed to work OK, rebooted, been fine since.
Early this week I got the update notice for 2.3.340, so I restored the CWM backup, downloaded the update, and tried to install. The phone rebooted and began installing the update. A few seconds into the install I see what looks like a yellow triangle around the progress bar, and it bails out. Once it finishes rebooting I get a message that the update failed.
I haven't removed any bloatware apps, so I don't think it's that. I suspect it's either 1) that I'm rooted, althoughs others here have updated while rooted; or 2) that guava.odx is missing and I'm not sure where to put it back.
Any ideas on my next step? Grab the 2.2 SBF and start over?

Um - sorry. I did read the post wrong.
I am rooted and was able to install. So I don't think that is it. After you rooted - but before you made your back up - did you mess with any system files or remove any bloat ware? You need to have all of that stuff to successfully install the OTA.

I don't remember messing around with anything. I had originally thought I'd remove the bloatware, but ended up not doing that.
Where would I find the stock 2.2 SBF? I can restore that, then update and re-install all of my apps, etc. Can someone also provide the instructions on how to install the 2.2 SBF?

Head over to mydroidworld.com and check out their thread on the update. You can flash it via cw recovery along with the baseband, bootloader, etc.

A full SBF (2.3.320) via RSD cures all then start all over ***MAKE BACK UPS !!!** Then do 2.3.340 via phone.
If you want to really do it right copy your SD to you PC format the SD with your phone and only add back to the SD files you need and know that way you get rid of any old data files that may haunt your phone.

So I hit MyDroidWorld and found the 2.2 SBF thread. Downloaded the file along with the RSD Lite version. Update the Moto USB drivers to the latest 4.8 drivers, and installed RSD Lite. Plugged my X in, making sure it was set for PC mode and Debugging - but it doesn't show up in RSD Lite. What now? Or did I manage to overlook a crucial step?

Found that I had to put the phone into 'bootloader' mode. Did so, and the phone now shows up in RSD Lite. I can select the .SBF file, but the 'Start' button remains grayed out.
<sigh>
It shouldn't be this difficult, should it?
Do I have the wrong .SBF file? The bootloader shows 30.03, so I think that's the correct one for the 2.2 SBF....

PS - RSD Lite has a status of 'Please manually power up this phone.', progress is 'Executed; 100%', Result is 'In Process...'. THe phone is powered up, although I do have this odd little blue triangle in the status bar next to the signal strength. If I click 'Close' in RSD Lite I get a message "Application is currently busy. Closing application may DAMAGE the attached device.". Needless to say I'm a little unsure about this. Is it OK to unplug the USB cable and close RSD Lite?
PPS - OK, needed to *228 it. Still not sure about close RSD Lite though...
PPPS - Success! Went ahead and unplugged the USB cable, then closed RSD Lite. Did the 2.3.340 OTA, rebooted, and everything appears to be OK. Need to get my root access back, but that shouldn't be too bad.

OH NO! Another messed up Droid X

A month go I installed the leaked Gingerbread. everything has been fine until I decided to get back to Froyo for the OTA. Rooted this morning through Gingerbreak. Still OK. Made a back up through Bootstrapper. Booted into recovery and installed .zip from sd card. Used Maderstock zip. it made it through almost the entire process then when it got to update Radio it aborted. I cleared all the cache and data and all...still nothing. Hit reboot and now it is stuck in bootloop at the droid logo. The font with the circles under the "r" Can not hold home and power to get into recovery. can not turn on phone at all. only get charge screen when plugged in (and yes I was 90-100% charged when attempting this) and red moto logo goes black when attempting recovery boot.
I assume I need to SBF through RSD Lite. Problem is- It wont recognize my device. (yes I have downloaded the Moto drivers.)
At this point I am totally stumped. Noob here, but with LOTS of research and reading over the last weeks.
Help?

check out how to sbf using a linux virtual machine. You can just boot it up within windows. As far as I know, you will not need the drivers for this to work.

After weeks of reading forums and posts, I have successfully SBFd my phone back to stock Froyo. I wish I could remember everyones names from every post I read, and thank them personally, but a BIG THANK YOU to the Android community and to anyone that has offered their time and service to helping out. THANK YOU ALL! My experience as little as it might be might now be valuable to others as well.

Many thanks to all those that have spent countless hours helping users like myself find solutions to Droid X problems. At one point in this process I basically bricked (maybe soft briked is the term) my phone. I could do nothing but get a bootload screen. No moto logo, no droid eye, NOTHING.
Long story short, and to help anyone that needs it, here is my solution.
Download FULL SBF file from file share somewhere (VRZ_MB810_2.3.34_1FF_01.sbf)
Download RSD Lite 4.8
Download Moto Drivers
Power Off Droid X- Make sure it is fully charged when attempting any SBF Flashing.
Power on into Bootload mode. I held Power and Volume rocker simultaneously until a quick flash then Bootload appeared. (version 30.4)
Open RSD Lite as an administrator. (hold shift and right click. use "run as") In my case Windows 7 -64bit
Plug phone into computer via USB
Locate device in RSD. Click the little box that has "..." in it and select the SBF file you previously downloaded.
Start.
Let it work its entire process and Voila you will have stock Froyo back on your phone in no time.
I then went in under settings and received the OTA for Gingerbread. My phone works like a champ now.
The steps are clear as day in my head, and I will be able to troubleshoot many of you through the steps. The further from today it gets it might get foggier, so ask away if you are having problems.
It seems like everything had to be VERY specific to work just right.

It happened to more people than you think. I DLed RSD 4.9, 4.8 didnt work for some reason. That was like a month ago, I'm on froyo now, rooted with Liberty. Now I have to SBF again to get the official GB...lol!

My story the same just different thread, (soft bricked) lol my phone, all i got was the bootloader, on win7 64bit as well, only thing different was ive my win7 tuned up to my preferences so i didnt have to ask or run as anything. The steps used in this thread were identical however and many many hours of reading done as well. Just putting this info up here to let you know that you can get your dead bootloading phone back so even though it feels like you have a bowl of something nasty in your stomach as you stare at your DX with nothing but a bootload screen on it and seemingly no other options, read thoroughly, pay attention, be specific and youll have your DX running like a champ in no time. THANK YOU Devs/Community

[Q] Wont boot after latest update

Hi,
Spent some time looking around the forums, but I wanted to make sure before I returned the phone for repair.
Basically I had the phone rooted to copy across a couple of library files and so than I can use nVidias Perfhud ES. The device worked perfectly, I also applied the previous update with no problems.
Today, after getting tired of receiving the update nag every few minutes I decided to update to latest firmware (4.5.91 I think). It downloaded the file, restarted, the progress bar run across and restarted again and that's where it stopped at the Moto boot logo.
After 20 minutes I decided to take the battery out and restart, same thing. I looked at the help section of Motorola's website and found the hard reset option. Booted into android recovery mode (the method for 2.2 didn't work, but 2.3 did the job - so I am guessing the boot image 2.3 installed correctly), did a wipe and restarted, again no luck.
Second try, downloaded the update file manually copied to a sd card and through recovery set to update, according to the log all was alright, but it still doesnt get past the motorola boot screen.
Anyone had this before, do I have any options here? I already contacted Motorola they said that I can send it for repair but I am situated in UK and phone was bought through a US retailer (AT&T Atrix) so they need a US address, which makes it kinda complicated. Any help/info will be much appreciated, thanks!

1. Unzip the first file, you will ended with a file with .sbf extension
2. Install RSDlite 5.3.1
3. Turn off the Phone and Disconect from USB
4. Press and Hold VOL UP while you turn the phone hold until the tag of RSD show up in the screen
5. Connect the phone to USB/PC
6. Open RSDLite and chose file to flash go to the one on step#1 (to chose click on "...") then press Start and wait until it said PASS on the status.
Be sure the phone is charge at least 40%-50% and do not touch your pc when is doing... to make sure everything go right remove SIM card and external SD card.

thats a service sbf so in data get preserve...
I think what it was wring with your OTA was that some of the files on you phone are already mod or replaced with something, so when try to do the ota a do the file checksum on each file then return with different code, so the upgrade stop automatic and get stuck in something, in that case you need to flash a SBF
NOTE: that once you are in the new 2.3.4/4.5.91 please NEVER try to downgrade with lower sbf in this case 1.83/1.57/1.26 etc....

when i got my moto defy for xmas last year, i had my older brother root it for me. i really had no idea how to safely use root, but i liked being able to overclock and all the other features. the phone was a little buggy just because it was on 2.1 and no updates yet. once an update came out, i installed it and got a great performance increase. later, i realized that it was not working right. whenever i hold down an on-screen button, the touch sensitivity "timed out" after only about 1.5 seconds, unless i kept my finger moving around on the screen. and every few times i reboot the phone, this glitch goes away until i reboot again and then it is back. root was also taken away, and none of the one click roots work. also, when the 2.2 update came out, i got the error message when rebooting after installing the update and it did not work. i tried wiping the phone several times, no luck. i am now interested in fashing a custom rom and rerooting. would this fix it? there must be a special way to do it since my phone is so messed up. i would like 2.2 or 2.3, and 720p vid would be cool too. the version i have now is 2.1.1, so can anybody suggest a rom that is stable and will work ok?. one more question, when i flash a rom, will it leave my apps and settings alone or do i have to start over?

Have you tried using SuperOneClick to root the phone? (You'll need to install the Motorola drivers for it to work.)
In most cases, you will lose your apps and settings when you flash a new ROM. But, if you figure out a way to root it, you can back everything up in Titanium Backup first, and restore it afterward.
If you just want to start from scratch, try wiping everything in the stock recovery. To get into the stock recovery, power off the phone, hold in the volume- button then also press and hold the power button. After a few seconds you should see a triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle, and a little green android guy below that. Then press the volume+ and volume- buttons at the same time, and a menu should appear. Use the volume buttons to navigate the menu, and the power button to select an option. Select "wipe data/factory reset" and also "wipe cache partition".
If that doesn't work, I'd recommend flashing a new Froyo sbf using RSD Lite. Here's a quick tutorial:
1) Install the Motorola drivers and RSD Lite on your computer. See this guide for installing Moto drivers and RSD Lite:

NEVER flash a full stock SBF file with a higher Android version than 2.2 (Froyo). Any stock firmware with Android version 2.3 or higher is made for the DEFY+, which has different camera hardware than the DEFY. If you flash the stock DEFY+ firmware, your camera will be broken and you won’t be able to downgrade back to Froyo again.
3) Make sure the phone battery is fully charged. Power off your phone, then hold in the volume+ button and the power button at the same time. After about 5 seconds, release the buttons. The bootloader should display – it will show the version and a battery check. (If that doesn’t work, pull the battery, then put it back in while holding the volume+ and power buttons.)
4) Start RSD Lite on your computer, then connect the phone with a USB cable. In RSD Lite, the Status column should say “Connected…”. Click on that, and some information about your phone should show up under Device Properties. Next, click the “…” button and browse to select the SBF file that you want to install. After opening it, information about the file should show up under File Properties. Then click “Start” and wait for the flashing process to complete. Wait until the phone has fully rebooted and RSD Lite says “Pass” before closing RSD Lite and disconnecting the USB cable. As an extra precaution, I usually power off the phone before disconnecting the cable.
Then you should be able to root, install custom recovery, and flash custom ROMs to your heart's content.

Most custom ROMs for the defy require that you upgrade to Android 2.2 (Froyo) first. I can explain how to do that, if you like. What country are you from, and what cellular service are you using?

Take a backup using titanium backup. This takes Care of all app and games. Then flash froyo. Go hd to install a custom rom like cm7. Guides are there for this. Restore all app and games with data from titanium backup

all this stuff is like you are speaking french to me. could somebody link me a sbf that has 720p video capability, 2.2 of some sort, and that is going to work with my current version(2.1.1)? i am still confused if the glitch i described will be fixed, and if it matters that i installed an update from motorola after i rooted. i really hate to be such a noob, but i don't have time to read all the guides and stuff. thanks for all the help, i just need a little more detail as i am very new to all this. I have T-Mobile USA
and one more thing: i just looked at some of the sbf's in the guide you showed me, the only 2.2 US file was from Megaupload, and F***King SOPA shut it down. now we feel the effects of this horrible law.

If your DEFY has a greenish-yellow camera lense (as most do), you won't get 720p video capability no matter which sbf you use. (Unfortunately, it's a hardware limitation.) Most custom ROMs will enable you to take widescreen videos, though.
You don't need to use a T-Mobile USA sbf, by the way; you can use any Froyo (Android 2.2) sbf you want (except for Chinese ones, which will burn out your camera flash). You just have to change the cellular radio baseband afterward, to match the frequencies used by T-Mobile USA. That's easy to do; just use the "DEFY baseband switcher" app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745 (Many custom ROMs, like CM7, already include the basebandswitcher app.)
Since you don't want to search through the forums for a guide on how to flash an SBF, here's one I wrote for a friend a while ago:
Flashing SBF firmware with RSD Lite
Follow this guide to flash firmware files (with .sbf filename extension) on the Motorola DEFY. This is useful for “de-bricking” a phone that won’t boot (provided the bootloader still works), or if you want to do a clean install of the Motorola stock firmware. I don’t recommend flashing SBF files unless absolutely necessary, however, since the process is dangerous: there is a slight possibility that your phone could become “hard-bricked” if something goes wrong. (A phone is hard-bricked when you can’t even access the bootloader to flash new firmware.) It is much safer to flash or modify firmware using ClockworkMod custom recovery, which doesn’t mess with the bootloader. (See step 3 for more info.)

WARNINGS:
A corrupted SBF, power failure on a critical part of the formatting, or some weird issues while creating partitions can lead to a “hard-bricked” phone (i.e., a phone that can’t even be restored by flashing new firmware, because you can’t get into the bootloader). It is recommended that you flash your phone from a laptop with a fully charged battery, to reduce the risk of losing power while flashing. Use good cables, and be sure that the PC doesn’t go to sleep during the flashing process.
If you flash a full stock SBF file, in most cases you will lose the ability to downgrade to earlier firmware versions. NEVER flash a full stock SBF file with a higher Android version than 2.2 (Froyo). Any stock firmware with Android version 2.3 or higher is made for the DEFY+, which has different camera hardware than the DEFY. If you flash the stock DEFY+ firmware, your camera will be broken and you won’t be able to downgrade back to Froyo again. (You can, however, install DEFY+ firmware without losing downgradeability, using the “fixed SBF” method. The Chinese version of the DEFY has a different kind of LED for the camera flash. Using the camera flash with that firmware can permanently damage the LED.
Before installing any new firmware on your phone, backup your stock firmware, so that you can return your phone to its original state in case you ever need to send it to Motorola for repair. The firmware for the US T-Mobile version of the DEFY was never released as an SBF file, so you won’t be able to restore the phone to its original state unless you have a full system backup of the stock firmware. (See note at step 3 of the guide below.)
1) Install the Motorola drivers and RSD Lite on your computer.

2) Flashing new firmware using RSD Lite will erase everything on your phone’s internal memory (but not the SD card), so backup your contacts, settings, and any apps you’ve downloaded. I recommend using Titanium Backup, which is available free on the Android Market.
Note: your phone must be rooted before installing Titanium Backup. You can root the DEFY using SuperOneClick. 3) Download the sbf file that you want to flash, and save it to your PC. If you are doing a “clean install” of CyanogenMod 7, I recommend using the 3.4.2-179-2 CEE DEBLUR sbf. Links to download it can be found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537
It would be a good idea to keep that file on your PC, in case you ever need to de-brick.
4) Optional step: before flashing an SBF file, it is a good idea to wipe data and cache in the stock recovery. (I usually forget to do that, though, and I haven’t had any problems.) If I remember correctly, on Android 2.1 you had to tap somewhere on the touchscreen to get the menu to display, and the touchscreen was also used to navigate the menu.)
