Simple question:
Does the transformer support 1080p video output through its mini hdmi port?
if not: what's the max resolution?
720 i believe
according to nvidia tegra 2 supports 1080P output via hdmi
HDMI 1.3 1920x1080
but
LCD 1024x600 (Tegra 230)
1680x1050 (Tegra 250)
CRT 1280x1024 (Tegra 230)
1600x1200 (Tegra 250)
I also have an question, why LCD output can't use the 1080P output
and why are tablets limited in 720P
the tblet will mirror out at 720p,which means you see the same on the tv as on lcd. It will output video from the video play unmirrored at 1080p, which means whne you send the video to tv the video on the tab is blank/
The reason no 1080p mirrored is because the tab display is only 1280x800.
while 1080p does work for video it is far from perfect. Hopefully they will smooth it out soon.

How do you make it to output 1080p video? When I play video (with default player or mobo player), the video is shown on both screens and it only output 720p to the TV.

Have you updated to 3.1? Is your video 1080p? Worked out of the box for me after update.
because 1080p playback is far from perfect, i do not test 1080P playback since i updated to 3.1

yes, my TF is on 3.1 and my video is 1080p but my TV reports that the TF only output 720p. What video player do you use?
Can't get mine to display on screen
Guys, please help me with this:
I tried to connect my transformer (3.1) to my Panasonic Viera Plasma HDTV using a GTMax High Speed Gold-Plated Mini HDMI to HDMI Cable Version 1.4 (25 feet).
My surprise... it didn't work. My understanding is I just had to plug the cable to transformer and tv and enjoy, but the tv screen does nothing and remains blank.
Is it because the length of the cable? or because of the version of the cable(1.4)? Or maybe I have to adjust the resolution somewhere? Or install an app?
Any suggestions?
Thank you very much!
Wrong thread, but...

Indeed,
Did you succeed to output 1080p resolution to a Full HD TV/monitor?
Which player?
I only can get 720p to both my Sharp and Sony Full HD (1080p) TVs with a full HD (1080p) mp4 Basic line video test (Film Teaser) with Buzz and Rokplayer.
Please advise....

Its one of the best ones out there for tablet unless your going for a full x86/x64 machine. Agree they should have never specified 1080p the tech is currently too slow to do it properly 9/10 times.

i use the stock player. when you play it is it mirrored on your tab? if so then thats a problem. when outputting 1080p it should blank the video area on the tab.
after 3.1 i had no issues getting this to work. perhaps its the handshake with your tv. i have year old 55in samsung lcd that support 24/60 1080p

Agreed, it has not advantage over competing solutions. GPU is nothing extraordinary, multimedia engine is a joke, standard A9 CPU. Only pure marketing.
Right now OMAP4 is probably the best SoC when it comes to pure power. Snapdragon with it's 1,5Ghz tablet specific SoC will be much faster than T2 both CPU and GPU wise(and it supports 1080p h264 High Profile 3.1), even now 1,2Ghz version has slightly faster GPU than T2.
Exynos would be great too, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any news about official honeycomb for exynos or any kind of tablet coming running on this SoC.

Are you guys sure that the poor 1080p h264 high profile performance is due to a hardware limitation and NOT due to poor software implementation ? Because Tegra 2 official spec sheet list 1080p encode and decode capability (though profile is not mentioned), but this article says it is capable of accelerating 1080p High profile.
I thought I read somewhere that part of the limitation at the moment is poor software/driver implementation. But the Tegra 2 isn't lacking for regular processing power. My Transformer outruns my Galaxy S when it comes to running regular apps and browsing, but my phone plays 720p videos smoother and supports more file types/containers/codecs.
That's weird.
When i watch a movie on the TF HD to the TV, my TV reports it as 1080p. My TF screen goes blank.
it's not weird, it's the way it's supposed to be. (read the thread!)
the tf's display doesn't support 1080p so it is switched of.

,Hi,there.
How do I watch Eee Pad movies on my HDTV? I noticed there marked an HDMI port, does this mean I can watch Eee Pad 1080p HD movies on HDTV via a HDMI cable? How do you guys source HD movies?
The HDMI-Output clones the Image from the eeePad's Display, so yes, you can watch HD-Videos on a HDTV as long as the eeePad is fast enough to decode it.
But I think a high-bitrate-1080p-stream will be a problem for the Tegra2, though...

That’s right. Just connect TF101 with your HDTV via HDMI cable and switch to TV out mode. For 1080p contents you’ll need HDMI 1.3 cable. But I noticed there are stutters and stops when playing 1080p videos with TF101. So suggest you compress 1080p contents to 720p mp4 videos before putting movies to TF101. The pavtube video converter works just fine on this. It doesn’t take long with CUDA acceleration enabled.
The output of the HDMI port is *NOT* 1080p. It is 720p. So there is little sense trying to play 1080p movies, unless you just like throwing away CPU cycles.

Did you ignore the post above yours? The thing only outputs in 720p so playing 1080p videos is just a waste. There's a huge thread about optimal Handbrake settings for the TF, if it's really a problem you can just transcode to high profile 720p and it should be perfectly smooth.
Even if the Transformer is capable of 1080p output, the video player will downscale 1080p videos to 720p and the HDMI out will upscale it to 1080p, causing loss in quality and sharpness while introducing artifacts. (the HDMI out is done to the entire screen after everything is rendered)

If I recall correctly, if the default player sees HDMI and a 1080p video source, it will stop mirroring and show 1080p on the television.

...What? That makes no sense. That's not how HDMI works.
Since 3.1 it should output full 1080p resolution when the video is 1080p. Some people confirmed it. I didn't test yet but since 3.1 HDMI output is great.
As I read everywhere, our A500 has many probs reproducing video at 1080p, worse than this I've to say that I hadn't any luck even with 720p format.
I've tried mani different players, with or without added codecs, with hard and soft decoding, but the results are always poor.
I'm talking 'bout Utube films, but also some H264 or .mkv (perfectly working on every pc or notebook even with am embedded graphic adap.
So, what we're gonna do? wait for a solution embedded into the OTA final 3.1, or is it an hardware problem we are facing right now despite the technical declared data of the various OEMs? Isn't tegra2 capable to manage hi-res videos?
Some guru's technical explanation would be appreciate, in order to clarify this situation, at least to give us good reason to hope or to give up with further expectations...
...and in any case, I'm glad to thank you for thy wonderfull job I do in this forum
some facts,
- stock acer rom 3.1 plays 1080p mp4 material just fine through HDMI.
- it will not be possible to play a 720p movie on tv as 1080p require much scaling and looks lousy.
- desktop is only 1280x800 (close to 720p) so don't expect 1080p just like that, it would look awful(even with 720p its still 4x scaling). (i seen it on folio100) and LG Optimus 2x does it too..
I havent got any avi at 1080p, and no mkv's to test at 1080p.
the WMV 1080p i have did not switch screen res to 1080p when played, so maybe its just for mp4..
the screen Is actually larger... its 1280x800 you get 720 because it removes the bottom bar(this is done so you don't see stretching and it will look horrible)...
you cant get actually 1080... its a mirror... you cant mirror something to make it look bigger, Its just a workaround triggered by the hardware decoder... that gets you the 1080...

Do you mean 720 on the Acer screen or on the TV? Cuz when I play 720p thru HDMI the image is perfect.
Why when I plug my device into my 1080 HD TV I can never get the resolution correct, the closest I can get it is when I set it to wide but I see my device not fitting the screen it is larger, now I am just talking about my desktop not videos.

Motorola Atrix(tegra2 baseD) do 2 separate screens. its indeed possible with tegra2 to have 2 different screen, i ported atrix release to folio100 and had a mediacenter on hdmi + android screen locally on tablet..
like with the 1080p playback, where you have a black screen on tablet, i think thats how 3.x handle it for now.. although its possible (since atrix has done it)
the chipset handles 2 screens fine, since atrix can do it, but vendors making the software is not making it possible, so what Google is doing is not much on this area, only motorola manage to do it, with their ubuntu + mediacenter + android solution.
lets hope someone else makes it.

i just looked through the atrix section, and it seems that ppl experience only 720p with its mediacenter function, so it might be 2 diff. displays but still only 720p..
so probably not worth spending time on. but they do have some technique to split the picture.

I'm guessing it's probably got something to do with the 1080p output being disabled for now, since it works with the kernels that have enabled that feature. Just guessing though - we'll have to see what Acer decides to do
On a side note, for people wondering, the video file in question is a 1080p H.264 encoded MP4 file with a rather high bitrate (didn't check the average, but some parts of the video exceeded 12 Mbps).

i dont think its kernel issue..
Bourne movie playys perfectly with Galaxy rom with my kernel "angel" edition, which does not work with the "dextersiconia" rom, where bourne movie stutter.. so its drivers...any acer image has the issue.. so decoding issue is placed in the handling of the containers..
but firmware for chipset is different in galaxy/virt. images, compared to acer stock roms..
I thought 3.1 Will bring 1080p hdmi support....but no...it didn't.....thrn I thought 4.010.40 will bring it(as per the changelog)....but still the same.....is everyone having the same issue or my tab exceptionly shows only 720p...!?

Running .40 version and 1080p hdmi out works but it is not smooth at all. It plays normally for a while then the picture pauses for a second then continue this behavour randomly.
Remember to play 1080 video file, so it will automatically switch from 720 to 1080.
Ooh interesting.
I'm not too surprised if the tablet can't decode 1080p but do other stuff work ok with 1080p output?
ie how does it work?
Does the external screen act like a second screen running at 1080 resolution?
I'm more interested in 'normal' apps like QuickOffice or more importantly, RDP running at .. well, whatever resolution this thing can output at... 1920x1080?

Unfortunately, they didn't put much thought into this (probably Nvidia's lack of foresight). The HDMI will only push 1080p video when playing a 1080p source, which it is hardly capable of doing. All other times it will be 720p.
What's the point in that?
I can only assume that app developers will be able to specify what resolution their apps can output in.
eg RDP app devs can allow the app to output at 1920x1080... and NOT mirror the tablet screen.
Or maybe Angry Birds to be in full screen, rather than having to scroll sideways.
Surely it's not purely for video which it can't play anyway.
Just plugged mine into an external screen and I can't figure out a way to demo this new feature whatsoever.
Unless this update is for .40 only.. I only got updated to .38 this morning.

You can't force a resolution, the tablet tries to output whatever the content is. The netflix app will not do 1080i, at least as far as I know. I'd suggest figuring out why your TV won't do 720p. All the 1080i capable TVs I've ever seen could do 720p no problem.

Second. Samsung Galaxy Tab based rom 3.1 (Use 1.0.4 update1)
Check it up and if you want better video playing you know galaxy rom its better for this.
You're not saying if that's 1080p high-profile or 720p high-profile. Why does it matter? Well, because 720p high-profile works just fine on the stock ROM and if what you're playing is 720p high-profile then you either have something really screwed up with your tab or you're deliberately trying to "prove" how superior the galaxy ROM is.

Obviously its 720p high no chance with 1080 on tegra2. About roms yes TALKING ABOUT VIDEO PLAYING the galaxy rom its the best of Asus,Acer,Motorola,Toshiba, samsung. Tested on every single rom on this forum just flashed and fresh. If I post this if for those who like to watch videos. Its the only thing that I can say Galaxys rom is best.
personally i found galaxy's rom a little laggy in other terms like browsing and stuff but I really like to watch videos on the tab and this rom its my choice for this task.

+1 to Werecatf
I don't really understand. 720p HP works fine on my 100% stock Iconia. I use doubletwist, moboplayer and the default movie player and they all work perfectly, so if you're having issues (especially what I see in that video) I'm going to say it's something related to your tablet or that it was tested using the older 3.0.1 builds.
obviously NOT all videos are the same, there is a video that probe it. I have several videos, that iconia with stock doesn't play smoothly, aleast not in main or high profile.
I dont know why samsung HC play better that videos.

Give a link to the said videos then.
For example the Simpsons Movie trailer from http://www.h264info.com/clips.html is 720p Quicktime-profile, ie. non-standard, non-baseline, and works just fine. The Rise of the Silver Surfer video is high-profile 720p and that too plays without an issue, no lag, no nothing.
