i was very interested in the device when i first saw it, but after all the unboxings that i saw, it had to USB connector to the pc... how can we get our songs, movies, games and everything else on there after it's rooted and running custom roms... and how will we install all the roms to it without a usb connector? thanks.

USB on Universal

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a Universal but I've a question on the USB port.
Has anyone tried connecting a USB hard drive directly to the Universal? I have a Archive Gmini 220 and I was wondering if the Universal would see it as an external drive and if this is the case can it run media on the drive such as MP3 or AVI files? Also has anyone tried connecting a card reader to read CF or Memory sticks etc.
Any rumours of a Universal with internal hard drive?
Captaink
Olnly thing i've heard is it does support but peoples who already tried says nevr made it work.
That's because just as with a normal PC it needs drivers to work with your device.
It's just a matter of time........

Agreed. This picture

clearly shows the mini-AB receptacle

Having a USB socket doesnt mean its a USB host!!!
It has to have that mini usb socket so that you can sync and charge, as they dropped the old style 21pin connector now. Its just like the Magician with usb only now.
There have been rumours it supports USB host mode, but ive not heard any confirmation or proof.
in this review of the device they say it does host

The PXA270 has a builtin USB host and
can operate as an OTG device. The guys
at HTC must be really sick if they have
not wired it.
I don't get only one thing: what USB 2.0
means here ? OTG ?
in which case it seems that HP and DELL are sick aswell

Can I use an external hard drive?

Is it possible to connect an external hard drive to the Vogue to use it as an MP3 player hooked up to my stereo to play music? My hard dive has a USB slot. Does anyone know how I can use the MiniUSB cable to USB cable and use the songs on the hard drive?
wow
wow... really? wow... umm...
probably not, USB doesnt actually stand for universal... i'm assuming you'd need some type of drivers or simple deviece support.
MAYBE.... you could use bluetooth to access it? but you'd need to build some hardware, and software.... so... probably no
im not an expert by any means though... somebody check out?
[everybody be easy on him, it's a pretty damn creative idea]
I've heard of prototypes of Bluetooth/WiFi accessible portable HDD's, but I've never seen one in production.
As far as hooking up directly via USB, I don't think it's possible since almost no (if any) PPCs can serve as a USB host.
Eh?
I bought a 4 port USB Hub (powered(?) Never got it yet..)for the Touch from cellphoneshop.net, and I'm guessing that maybe USB Caddy might if it is a Microdrive, but yea, you'll probably need some driivers to make it work...
Interesting Idea, and I had that thought some time ago...I was about to add 5VDC (external) to my USB Caddy, and attach it to my touch... never did finish that project...
I tried a powered hub, and had no success.

USB cable not working, how do I download anything?

Hi I'm looking for some good, hopefully free, games for my HD but for some reason my USB lead has given up and I don't know how else to do it or any suitable sites?
My USB worked when I first got it, I synced with my laptop and backed everything up. Now when I plug both in the phone still charges but neither the phone or the laptop seem aware of each other! Any ideas?
Any suggestions of sites for free games that don't require USB downloads? Or what might of happened to my USB?

Have you checked usb drivers?
Put your phone into bootloader by turning off device, then holding vol down and pressing power on. You should have a tricolour screen. Now connect phone to pc via usb cable. Does bopttom of bootloader screen change from 'Serial' to 'usb'? If not, update usb drivers here
As for games. There is a list of games which work on the HD in the wiki. Try searching Themes, Applications and Software forum. Also, any further queries regarding games should be in Themes, Applications and Software forum
if all else fails use bluetooth to sync and install stuff
Search, find, download, extract.
Place downloaded on sd card (cardreader)
Insert sd card and install apllication
I have had a similar problem with my TD2, when I use the usb cable that came with the phone it charges (from the mains plug), then when connected to the PC it will detect it and sync fine, I got bored of swapping the single cable from the charger to the PC so decided to use a spare usb cable (retractable one I had for the cig lighter for my car), it charges fine (in car or charger or PC), but Windows XP gives an error. If I swap back to the other cable its fine, I dug out an old cable from my XDA Orbit and that is ok as well.
In conclusion, all usb cables are not the same, and my TD2 is more fussy with cables !! Try using a different cable.
Quite Right you are. Had the same problem a while ago. Got sick of this so I cut the not working cable. Guess what...? The bugging cable only had two threads inside. It was a cable for charging only...http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Micro USB Cable?

Does *any* Micro USB cable work with the Nexus One?
Like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/BlackBerry-Cable-Micro-1-0m-Black/dp/B001QATRCA/
The G1 USB cable I currently use was the same price as the above, but it was actually branded as a "G1" cable.
Anyone know for sure?
yes, any micro USB cable. Heres a breakdown:
If your phone has an extUSB port, any extUSB cable or miniUSB cable will work.
If your phone has a miniUSB port, any miniUSB cable will work, extUSB would work but it cannot physically fit into a miniUSB port.
If your phone has a microUSB port, any microUSB cable will work, but no miniUSB or extUSB will work.
extUSB is HTC's semi-proprietary USB port which is simply miniUSB with an audio connector and unique socket shape.
All USB ports and cables of the same form factor have the same pinout.
MicroUSB has replaced MiniUSB and all new released portable devices will have microUSB most likely.
Xperia X10 miniPro connections?
Hi Folks - This is my first post and still getting used to how this board works, so please be patient with me!
I've got a similar problem regarding miniUSB leads... I've recently bought a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 miniPro... It charges via the USB port but the connector is not standard!
I'm wondering if anyone knows the pin-out of the socket and also where leads with such a connector can be purchased online?
Thanks for any help!
`
And you thought asking Nexus One owners would be a good idea?
Try a Sony section, someone there is bound to know.
All microusb cables are not the same I found this out recently.
I bought a microusb "blackberry" that fit into my nexus one no problem but when I tried to use it to transfer files; windows would act like it didn't know what device it was.
Now i'm currently using a kodak microusb that will allow windows to know its the nexus one and I can I mount my phone but everything is copy write protected.
So when I get home I have to go back to my old beat up cord that wont stay in my phone until I find a suitable replacement that will let me mount and access the files.
I bought some blackberry microusb cables on Amazon for a penny back in March (yes, 1 penny each!). They work perfectly for everything. I guess somehow wondercoolguy managed to find cables that were even cheaper then mine

This BB wire fits the nexus like a glove but hates transferring information. Yes I got my wire for 1.00 from a mertine if I remember correctly....I hate that place
Afaik any micro usb cable will work. Micro usb is the new standard.
I haven't seen any charging-only cables but that is a possibility.
http://m.gizmodo.com/5389063/united-nations-approves-microusb-universal-phone-charger-standard
I have been using micro-usb cable for my external disk, Nexus/GalaxyS and my previously own Nokia N97. No problem for charging, transfer files or tethering. I even use old N97 charger (micro-usb connection) on Nexus One before. None of these had any problem.
Micro-USB is a standard connection, there shouldn't be a problem. If there is, it could be due to the system mainboard or mainboard's USB port itself. Try not to connect too many devices through a USB-hub that link up from a USB port of the system. If you really need connect it via a USB-hub, get those hub has a dedicated power adapter.
Just buy any cheap cable, it will work. I also bought two official HTC chargers for my phone as well as some random USB to microUSB cables. All work fine, just as do the cables from my Nokia phones, cameras and cables I found under my girlfriend's bed lol
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I dont know if anything I said was taken to heart please disregard it because I found out that my work disabled the flash drives to read only. It's not the cables fault all my cables work at home sorry

[Q] Homemade USB hub? (no soldering!)

I posted this on Plopper's thread here(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=923864) but thought it might be better here as I might get a quicker reply
"I have bought a 4 way USB hub which has a usb socket on its input lead. This can be plugged into your PC or into a usb mains charger or usb car charger.
If the input lead is plugged into one of the four output sockets and the lead is cut open and the red and black wires are exposed, a 2A 5v charger can be connected to these wires by twisting together and taping.
This then powers both sides of the hub with 2A supply and by-passes the protection.
It does sacrifice 1 output socket but HD2 +keyboard+mouse= happy Ubuntu
Will this work?"
I am dying to try it but thought I'd check with tech savvy types first.
Edit; I am thinking now that the green and white data cables in the input leads may have to be cut and the ends taped, but it may not matter(?)
Have attached photo of the hub and the charger
The charger is an old Nokia one and has a lump of plastic near the end which I assume houses a fuse of sorts.
Reading through Plopper's thread again I am sure this is OK, but am unwilling to brick my HD2!
You could get a 7 way usb hub and add things like external HDD or (my favourite) a usb fan to cool down your HD2!
Working
OK over 300 views of this thread and no reply!
this usually means the idea is a dud or its been done before!
I have searched around but can only find y-cables, which supply extra 500mA from another USB socket but only allow 1 device connection.
If this has been done before, I apologise.
However, I got bored of waiting and went ahead with cutting up leads and splicing wires. I flashed WM6.5 and loaded Ubuntu 0.3 (only one with USB host that I can find!)
AND IT WORKS!!!!!
I had to buy a micro USB cable because I didn't want to cut my stock one (get a data cable because a charging cable only has 2 wires in it).
Note on cable colours, apparently there may be variation on some manufacturer's cable core colours, take care to identify by tracing circuits on the hub and checking continuity from the pins to each core.
Also, being an electrician, I am wondering what the current carrying capacity of the tiny core cables are, I will have to look it up at some point (adiabatic equation) meanwhile check for overheating.
Enjoy! (something to do on wet weekend!)
Homemade USB
i made this, unfortunately i can't use it with 0.3 bucouse i installed magldr and i use Android, and linit tutorial doesn't work for me

Impressive!
It sure beats the above from me.
What do you use it with?
What else might support USB hosting?
I prefer to use WP7 and Android too (see sig)
i made it for HD2 for use it with Ubuntu, i hope that the v0.4 come out soon and with usb host support...
Doh!
467 views after first posting this and after re-reading plopper's thread again I have realised what plopper and Mister B were saying in their last posts.
There is no protection in unpowered usb hubs, so no need to bypass it!
I have over-complicated everything.
It is only necessary to change the hub lead plug to a microUSB one and then connect the charger to the usb plug which you have just cut off, then plug it into one of the spare ports.
Oh well never mind!
i take a photo with HD2 on it http://i53.tinypic.com/34dr96v.jpg
很好很强大!
nice... ...but, don't smoke so much....
Guys,
For those using Android, you can try Dorimanx's latest 2.9.9 ROM which claims to have USB Host enabled. I don't have a USB OTG cable to try it on, but let us know if having a self-powered USB hub works on it. Thanks

i tried it (XB V.19 that is based on it, with the same kernel USBH enabled) but unfortunately it doesn't work, i saw in the system partition of this rom and i saw that there aren't any driver for USB hardwares support (USB Keyboard, mouse, USB Flash memory...)...so i think that the problem is this (no drivers support)
