I've always thought about this ever since a buddy of mine coded a little bot to do about the same thing to an online game.
Anyway,the real question I guess is, What can be done to prevent these types of thing from happening? What do you think?
Doesnt Android tell you everything a program is going to access before it's installed? I ALWAYS read that.
The only thing that this article is trying to point out is that non tech savvy users, which are probably a lot of Smartphone users won't really understand or care to know the "details" of the apps and what its all going to do, as such; they're more prone to installing these malicious apps. On top of that, they were showcasing that right now, they've only taken the GPS coordinates from the phone, but if they wanted to - passwords, messages, etc could be taken from the phone without anyone ever knowing.
I think this is good, it makes people more aware and allows us to be more cautious. Not mention, it's becoming obvious that Mobile data/traffic is easy to target and probably even easier to trick users (than on computers) because of lack of security and the notion that ones' phone cannot be "hacked" or what not.

i had to go threw SlideMe.org to get a app because my bank blocked Android Market lol anyway. They sent out a server wide warning that app was bad last night.
BTW is there an app which logs where and what your phone sends? Like "littlesnitch"?

There's not much that can be done about this, and it's a perfectly legitimate threat.
Yes, the app DOES tell you what it will be doing, but nearly any app that has Network access and Fine Location, especially if it does grab your GPS coordinates for something in the app itself, could send stuff behind the scenes and you'd be completely unaware.
I definitely don't think this will be the last time we'll hear about this sort of malicious app.

Of course but you don't know EXACTLY what the app is doing with the info(unless you tear it apart).Like in the example a weather widget,of course its going to use gps.So what if another app that can access your phones info that would typically need to, but is broadcasting that info to a remote server.If you get what I'm, trying to get at.

The only truly saving grace of these phones about the sensitivity of location awareness with respect to paranoia of the same, is that we can pull the battery and remove any doubt that the phone cannot disclose its function or location.
There was an article I read a while ago that the Fed's had issued over 3 million location requests last year to Sprint on users - warrant-less! How's that for Paranoia!!!
But all these apps in the market has the Buyer Beware tag so, of course at some point or another it will be exploited! For the most part, the idea of location awareness and marketing/advertisement and or service oriented provisioning is a great concept. The openness of the Android system to provide the same - will undoubtedly have it's shortfalls. A Good Firewall app that notifies and asks for approval prior to transmitting info or accepting connections from an app would go a long way to controlling potential problems. Just like a PC, which basically these phones have become.
well, considering I don't go on any financial sites from my phone, there's not much they can get off it...do they want my school email password? Have at it...they can read those worthless emails if they want (heck, even send a nice threatening email to my profressors for all I care lol).
Not to mention that my phone gets wiped a few times a week, just like so many other people here, there's not much they can get unless they can manage to hack into my google account and steal my credit card info...in which case, they won't be able to spend much on that account, since there's nothing in it lol.
This is as bad as "big brother" listening to my phone calls. What do I care? lol. If someone wants to know where I am, then by all means, let them know where I am. I'm not doing anything of interest to them.
On a side note, we apparently have caught the attention of the mods in this sub-forum, and have become a "family forum" according to a different thread lol.

My thoughts also, but I don't know if it is a true Firewall or just handles calls...
A security issue is still a security issue even if it doesn't affect you, and an invasion of privacy is still an invasion of privacy even if you don't care about it. Not trying to start any sort of flame here, please don't take it that way. Just mean to say that if you wait to take a stance on a known problem until it becomes YOUR problem, haven't you maybe waited too long?
Well I just got off the phone with sprint after asking them about froyo the guy started reading that bs script so half way through the guy reading the script I stopped him and said can you get me some real info please. Ok sir just one moment so after about 2 mins he came back and said froyo is schedule to be released feb 1st. I wouldn't even consider this a rumor or anything that should be believed. I wanted to share how a sprint rep shuts down when the script no longer flys

I think that even with all the (supposed) improvements in Sprint CS, it is absolutely pointless to ask any of them anything speculative or deeply technical. The experts are all right here and on "the googel." Leave the poor sops alone--you need a bill adjustment or credit, call them. You need expertise, come here. ^_^
Yeah if I have I a tech question I don't even call sprint tech anymore I just jump on here. But that script reading is funny ****. Half of the reps have rom read it cause they don't even know what group is.

first level CS not knowing, giving BS, I dont blame em. I always throw out the froyo question if I am calling anyways, just for this amusement... the first level people know less than the sales people at a sprint store. The BEST ones, MAYBE, are the ones who ask their supe, and its not a 2 min hold, its just a few seconds, and they come back and say they dont know, sorry. Now the tech support lady I was transferred to, who obviously had NO tech experience (supposedly second tier) did not know what 2.1 or 2.2 meant, so I said Froyo, then it was like a red flag, oh let me get my supe, I said no, I was more concerned with the replacement Epic I had just waited 5 days for that FC'd everything... system apps, everything. Its like their 'tech support' are there just to annoy you into driving to the sprint store so a tech can look at it in person. ONE guy was cool enough to set me up an appointment, and describe in the job ticket what they were to do, as they said my effed up display was cosmetic when I went in to the 'techs' previously. Anyways, never had to deal with them till I got an Epic... so I dont know if it changed. Dont get me wrong, my screen issue was either defect or a damaged connection cable, otherwise epic is solid.
Now the 'finance' department going to a comission basis, or at least acting like it, is bull****. I got two lines because I had a second job where I had to call in orders to landlines, taking hours at a time (Frontier FIOS), then left the job and had issues with payments on two lines for just myself (nobody told me of seasonal hold on a line) and had to deal with finance. In the past, say 2 years ago and longer, they were AWESOME, they would work out any reasonable deal...but im guessing with the economy, they are pusing them to have all these stupid stipulations, etc. I know its my fault I am behind, I signed a contract, but in the past they were SO willing to do anything to keep my account, it was awesome. Also, anyone get a disconnect lately? No more handy redirect to customer service/finance... now its just a 1970s phone company voice saying you are not authorized to make a call to this number, please try again later... cheaped out on that system too....
BUT, still cheapest carrier, and better CS all around than VZ, any division...

I've worked in call centers for quite a while and it's not the fault of the agents when management defines a script for them and doesn't give them anything else to work with. Understand when you work in a job like that, everything you say is recorded and if you deviate from the script and start throwing your opinion out there you risk your job.
I'm fortunate that now, while I'm still on the phone, I provide tech support to the gov so generally I get a lot more leeway than I did in previous jobs. But there still are pre-written scripts I have to rattle off in certain circumstances, and usually to very important people. Ironically, they almost never give me a hard time because unlike the whiny residential customers at a previous job, these people actually understand that we have procedures and policies to follow for the sake of legality / security / confidentiality / modus operandi.
In short, I'm glad I don't have to talk to people like you anymore!

While the agent shouldn't have made up a date (I'm our team's trainer and that's one of the first things I teach our people, "don't BS, you'll get caught"), if you pressure someone for something they don't have, you get what you deserve.

Hehe well starting a sentence with "Look, Sir" and ending with "I don't have a clue" is a great way to turn a frustrated caller into an irate one.
But yeah, "I wish I could answer that question but we haven't been provided with a release date yet. We've been told that the update is in the works and should be released in the near future. Do you have any other questions I might be able to help with?"
It sounds lame but if you sympathize too much with a caller, they suddenly want to spend 20 minutes telling you their life story (time you generally aren't allowed to spend chit-chatting). If you are too cold and uncaring, they get ticked off. So you're stuck basically with "Yeah I feel for you, but here's what I can do for you / tell you. Do you need anything else?"

Would that have changed your opinion or would it have been another "confirmation that Sprint doesn't know what they're doing"? In looking at the overabundance of posts on Froyo I"m guessing that a post would have developed stating something like " Just called tech support. Asked them about Froyo. Customer service doesn't know what the hell they are doing cuz they couldn't answer my question... I'm switching to Verizon because I'm tired of the lack of support that Sprint/Samsung/America(since international Galaxy devices have froyo) provides." Sound bout right?
Now I understand why so many Devs are starting to jump ship from the site.

Sorry didn't mean to come off as an ass but I can say and truly mean, unless you walk a mile in their shoes... Try dealing with so many people on a daily basis asking the same damn questions. I for one don't really worry about froyo, my phone is stock and I like it the way it is. I think that this fasination with it has gone wayyy overboard.

Everything about this is garbage ... do I care? No. Some folks definitely have a stronger opinion of this than others. He takes others work and 'passes it off' as his own. I don't deny that people can't be bothered to do this stuff and will pay others for the 'work' but the wording is always the funny part. Its like me posting a listing and utilizing everyone else's contributions.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I've seen people on CL ASKING to pay for someone to root their phone. I always email them right away, tell them about the one click root method with the video walkthrough, and to save their money. Craigslist is full of ****heads and scammers, but this is a service that people want, and just don't know where to get good information. I always get thank you emails after for showing them XDA, and saving them money.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with what the guy is doing. He's offering his services for a fee... Capitalism at its best!
You think how much time you've spent learning how to do this, familiarizing yourself with the process. Learning what to do when something goes wrong, etc, etc. If you're a youngin or unemployed, you have time to do this. Some people are not tech savvy, not computer literate, and think cmd is some highly technical code. These people will pay you for results.
If you know what you are doing and can deliver, there's nothing wrong with marketing your skills. There is information out there on how to change the head gasket for my car, or install a new clutch. I don't have the right tools or the inclination to get under the hood to do this myself. I take the car to a repair facility. Same concept here.
Or better yet, why go to a doctor... There are books you can read to research your illness and determine a course of therapy. The list goes on and on.

Am I ignorant? I don't know, i'll let god be the judge of that. I do know one thing though, i'd much rather be ignorant than a low life moron.
The majority of people who do not know how to root there phones are not ignorant or lazy simply because they "lack knowledge". First off, you can't be ignorant and lazy at the same time wise guy...think about it for a second (just don't think too hard and hurt yourself)
Secondly, how are people supposed to know that rooting even exists if no body tells them? Are they just supposed to assume that when they purchase their device that it has a stock rom on it and is un-rooted? I'm sorry, but very few people are as wise or psychic as you or they may not have nerd friends to explain to them what rooting is, therefore they can not possibly know to look on the internet for how to root there phone because they have no clue that such a process exist.
this does not make them ignorant because they aren't choosing to not know how to root, they simply haven't learned the facts (and yes, the majority of people have no clue what rooting is, so go pat yourself on the back for being superior to all of these ignorant lazy people)

Its not quite the same ... I mean, I get what you're saying ... but, skills? You aren't doing anything but taking someone else's work and using it for your financial betterment. regardless, how does one know that rooting exists without anybody telling them? this is probably going to sound like i'm dividing by zero, but a possible answer is... they discover it themselves! yes, people are capable of doing that! the human brain is indeed quite impressive and capable of independent thought and education. people don't have to be told by someone that something exists. it is possible for things to be discovered without being told by someone. put yourself in your grandma's shoes. she doesn't know anything about this technology stuff, but she is learning because recently she discovered that are phones out there that can do many things. these phones can let you browse the internet, use your phone as a hotspot, will even let you video chat with your grandchildren, and they even have these touchscreens that allow you to just use your fingers instead of having to press a bunch of buttons! amazing! being the curious little grandma that she is, she goes home, opens up internet.com, and decides to type "evo smartphone" into her AskJeeves toolbar that she has installed. Her mind is opened to a plethora of information where she discovers what is possible with these phones. She does her research and decides that she wants one.
the moral of the story? she wants a ****ing smartphone because of its capabilities, and she didn't learn everything she knew about because of someone telling her about it -- she did her research. "most" people dont just walk into a sprint store and buy an android smartphone not knowing what it is capable of. these people have played with sprint's demo phones, they have played with their friends' phones, they have watched youtube videos of it in action. they know what the **** the phone is capable of. being the curious humans that we are, a majority of us know for a fact that the things we buy are not limited just to what the manufactures make us believe. so don't give me that bull**** statement that you have to be psychic or have nerd friends with gadget toys to figure things out for yourself.

this sentence is very subjective. it's good for the person taking advantage of it because that means money in his pockets and some extra food on the table for his family. it's not good for the person being taken advantage of because he/she could be doing all this for free. being taken advantage of, and then realizing that you've been taken advantage of could be good for the customer because maybe that's what it takes to open his eyes and learn from his mistakes. in that case, it could be a good thing for both parties.
now, i dont necessarily agree with his tactics. i do feel that he should just be educating people; doing it for free or even much cheaper; or be more clear (and honest) when explaining what he is doing. but, that is not the case. he's simply trying to make a quick buck, and it might be working. that doesn't make him stupid or a moron. shady? sneaky? sure, but definitely not stupid.

First let me start off by saying I'm a noob, a virgo, and like taking long walks on the beach LOL. I have been lurking around for the past couple of months and have learned a lot from the great people that like to help and share information. This is indeed a great community of people. This is my first post so if it seems long winded I apologize. Now my reason for my thread title. I live in Phoenix AZ (I know it's a dry heat), I was watching the news tonight and they did a story on the search of cell phones by the police. It seems that in California if you get stopped for anything, traffic ticket, jay walking, ect. and your cell phone is within arms length of you, the officer can ask for your phone and can search through it no search warrant needed! Yes that means anything and everything that is on your phone is free game (I find that a little strange since last year a husband went to court over accessing his wife's email and reading it.) But as the story was told California Supreme court upheld the ruling which again states that any person who comes in contact with a law enforcement officer can have their cell phone "looked at". This means call history, web sites visited, your phone book, and any and all information that is stored on your device. The only catch is that the device has to be within arms reach of the person. I am not a criminal, never even had a traffic ticket, but the thought of someone going through my phone drives me crazy. I keep my phone locked with a passcode, so would that mean that I would have to unlock my device for them to snoop through it? Anyway I found this interesting and I thought that I would share it with anyone who cares. My question is, of all of the talent that is in this community, has there ever been an app made like a "kill all pill", something that with just the touch of a button your device would be reset to factory settings and/or scrub the sd card? Just a thought. Once again thank you for allowing me to gain more knowledge of my device and to share in the community. Keep up the great work!

I saw the same report about California on our news.
I have news for you, I will never consider living in that state.
That is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS and a step away from the government having video cameras in your house.

Just another reason for me to hate living in Cali. I must have missed the report but I remember about a month or so ago some state in the north eastern part of the us displayed a new device just for cell phones that police were beginning to use. Basically it comes with universal plug or what ever and totally scans phone in a matter of seconds. All contents are then stored in said device for further review. files included absolutely everything! Pictures, videos, internet history/cache, emails, call history etc. Welcome to socialism! California is leading the way.

Police officers can ask for lots of things. You don't have to give it to them. If an officers asks if he can look in your trunk you can say no, if they ask to come into your house you can say no, if they ask you anything you can remain silent. So if you have something on your phone that you don't want the police to see, just say no when they ask if they can look at it.
I have seen police go to apartments where the neighbor reported that someone was smoking pot. They can smell the pot, but if no one answers the door, or the person who answers does not let them in they can't take any further action.

Looking into this, I find there is no viable Linux alternative, as we used to have with Opie. So either I block everything G**gle with an independent app like Android Firewall, or do with 4.4.4.

The phone listens for certain frequencies of sound in certain orders, if it doesn't see those, it keeps looking. It doesn't record every single thing said and send it to Google, it only sends what you say to it (everything past "OK Google").
It's the same way a button works. Nothing records when a button isn't pressed, but things records when it is.
As for the rest of Google, they do make their living off of a free service, what more can you expect? I'd rather pay for a no ad version of their stuff instaid, but untill that's possible, that's just the way it works if you want those beautiful services.

New cars have Bluetooth... Not good.

Yeah.. it's not recording and streaming everything you say. The always listening feature isn't going to decipher everything you say until it matches the hot word, that would kill your battery. It's only kicks in when it detects multiple tones in a certain order.. I don't even know why I'm typing this, think what you want dude, that's not how it works. The phone has a co-processor which is independent of the main system. Sure, its main function is to watch for keywords and instigate searches based on commands, but it can also be co-opted. I'm not saying any more because apparently I'm frightening a few people here who don't want to face it.

If we are observed in all matters, we are constantly under threat of correction, judgment, criticism, even plagiarism of our own uniqueness. We become children, fettered under watchful eyes, constantly fearful that --either now or in the uncertain future-- patterns we leave behind will be brought back to implicate us, by whatever authority has now become focused upon our once-private and innocent acts. We lose our individuality, because everything we do is observable and recordable.
How many of the adults present have paused during conversation in the past four-and-a-half years, suddenly aware that we might be eavesdropped on? Probably it was a phone conversation, although maybe it was an e-mail or instant-message exchange or a conversation in a public place. Maybe the topic was terrorism, or politics, or Islam. We stop suddenly, momentarily afraid that our words might be taken out of context, then we laugh at our paranoia and go on. But our demeanor has changed, and our words are subtly altered.
This is the loss of freedom we face when our privacy is taken from us. This is life in former East Germany, or life in Saddam Hussein's Iraq. And it's our future as we allow an ever-intrusive eye into our personal, private lives.
Liberty requires security without intrusion, security plus privacy. Widespread surveillance is the very definition of a police state. And that's why educated people must champion privacy even when we have nothing to hide.
The level of stupid in this thread astounds me. If someone wants your information or something of yours, they're going to get it. It doesn't matter if your phone is always listening or not.
