Building ICS from source code for Nexus S - Nexus S General

So, a few questions to start the discussion:
1. Do you think we can build working ROMs with proprietary files from 2.3.7? Or will build configurations mess it up?
2. Hardware: the requirements are incredible. https://groups.google.com/group/and...l=en_US&lnk=gst&q=16gb&pli=1#7355d4256bdf4906
Any of you guys going to give it a shot? I only have 4 cores and 8 gigs of RAM, I might try but based on JBQ's post, it will take me over 10 hours to make one build!

Ten hours well spent. I wish I had the knowledge to do it myself.
Mods: please don't lock this thread. Let us have one place to discuss the development of ICS.

Ten hours IF it doesn't fail!
Seriously though, if you are intelligent, patient, and a good google searcher, you can do it. The instructions are pretty good. I taught myself just from reading the website and googling when I got errors. http://source.android.com/source/initializing.html

Lower system specs are OK. It just means that you time to compile will be longer.

From what I understand this build is for the Galaxy Nexus so I imagine drivers and such will not be included for the Nexus S. But I'm sure we'll have some of our best developers cook things up soon enough (as long as xda mods didn't banned all of them out yet).

So if it's 10 hours to build with no errors on your machine then my build time must be about 10 days since I only have an old single core with 2 gig of ram...
I need to upgrade

"no less than 16 GB RAM to build the source code, twice the amount Gingerbread needed. It will take 5 hours to compile on a dual quad-core 2+GHz workstation, and need 80GB disk space for all AOSP configs."
this is actually a low spec pc..
80GB of normal HDD?...
2x quadcore 2+ghz??
no **** it needs 16GB of DDR2 1066...
these specs easly burns the stated specs:
60GB SSD
six core 3.5GHz.
8GB DDR3 2000.
the infrastructure of a dual quadcore and a 80GB HDD isnt really a system in advantage.. as seeing that the HDD will be 1 of the bottlenecks (tus the rotation speed) and the recomanded ram being 16,not meaning it will actually use the full 16GB ram.
and yes the are using DDR2 because there hasnt been a dual CPU board with a 4 slots DDR3 system for a while, just shortly.

Uh, you realize that requiring 80GB of hard drive space means it needs 80GB of hard drive space, right? An SSD does not provide more space, it provides faster access. The same goes with RAM. If the thing requires, let's say, 14GB of RAM to compile, it will require 14GB of RAM of any sort, be it PC100 or DDR5 102400000.
The only thing a faster drive, or faster RAM will do is make it compile faster. The only portion of your post that makes sense is the CPU speed.

We're here live at Google I/O, and the folks from Mountain View have just shared something rather interesting -- a coalition of manufacturers and carriers committed to making sure their Android devices receive the very latest updates. All four major US carriers (and Vodafone) as well as HTC< Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola are on board, and all will guarantee you timely upgrades to the latest version of Android for eighteen months after release, provided the hardware's capable.

18 months is the period in which an android device will get that promised regular update and support. Obviously.
I'll believe it when i see Vibrant GB source on my desktop
Best announcement of the Google I/O would be if they announced that Samsung is pushing GB to all Galaxy S phones.
I want this announcement. D:
Now the question is: Does this announcement apply to phone that are already released and sold. ex. Vibrant.

ICS probably will need specs that are like the SGS2. So don't be surprised if we don't get ICS, but I'll be happy with GB, since Samsung has to update it.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. The Nexus S is using the same SoC as the Vibrant and google is going to pass at least one major update to it, Ice Cream Sandwich. Plus our GPU is powerful enough to supply the holographic UI.
Look at the N8 for example. The CPU is weak but the GPU can still nicely support the UI along with no lag.
If Nexus S gets ICS and we don't.
I'm going to Samsung's store and saying HERE i dont want your phone and go back home and pick up some other great phone of that time.

Cyanogenmod 7.1 -- I'm a sad panda

So I bought the Nexus the day it came out to get away from the Epic. My sister and mother though are still using the Epic and I was looking to help them out and load Cyanogen on it since they JUST released 7.1
I can't help but notice that the Epic is the only US SGS phone that isn't supported. The Captivate, Vibrant, Fascinate and International SGS all have it. They really got their hopes up too after seeing it on my Nexus.
I'm sorry for you guys, after having the Epic for almost a year I understand how awesome the community was. I ran MIDnight and ACS 2.1 and 2.2 roms for a while and loved them. I'm really sad to see that there isn't a true AOSP rom yet.
I had been away so long though that I'm not sure where the CM7 development left off on the Epic. Any news on what's holding you guys back?

Given that the OP has 375 posts on XDA to your 2, chances are he/she is not a troll (the jury is very much out on you though). Yes, there are many threads as to why there isn't CM7 for our phones, the point still stands that CM7 is stuck in 1st gear (Alpha build) due to the fact that there is no source code released for Epic due to no official GB. The culprits remain the same: Samsung and Sprint. The devs literally had nothing to work with, so the fact that there is even a working Alpha build is nothing short of a miracle.
CM7 is not stuck in alpha in any way. In fact, it's mostly completed. The current release is labelled as an alpha, but it's coming along very well, and is stable.

True, I did not have it right as it is nearly fully functional and not an alpha build that it was months ago.
From CM7 wiki:
"The current buglist:
Overlay for Video Recording
Video playback for certain encoders
Wimax
Other than those (relatively) minor bugs, this rom is nearing a somewhat completion."
Would love to give CM7 a ride, but will wait a bit longer for hopefully a stable GB modem without random reboots and working WiMax (which I still use on occasion).

I saw that too, asked Motorola if our Atrix will get ICS for sure, waiting for reply...
I wouldnt hold my breath. I am a member on those forums and have been part of their Soap testing. From what Mark has said, he doesnt believe that the Atrix will get the update anytime soon. They are working backwards from the newer devices first then back to the older ones. Since the Atrix 2 was released sooner than the original I would expect to see that on the list before the Atrix itself.
I doubt it. There's no reason for them to update it They release like 20 phones in a 12 month period. Why waste the time/resources updating a model that is already 1 version older.
CM9 is the only viable answer to the ICS question for the Atrix.
They sent me this same thing, one month ago.

It's an alpha build with no camera support and gapps kinda work.
Guess you have lower expectations from your phone.
This is not knocking the work, but it is far from an "all you need" solution.

It's an alpha.
Even if official ICS comes, it will definitely be after the dev supported ICS roms on XDA hit final release. Mark my words.
i'd be completely shocked if they updated the phone we all paid for less than a year ago. but who knows, if they decide to it'll probably 8 months before they release it.
Don't get too anxious. Remember how long it took for them to roll out updates for Gingerbread. Motorola can do all the work, then get discouraged by the priorities of the carrier.

Look. No CM9 ROM has camera support right now. Btw, I'm running the latest alpha and it is working quite well for an alpha. I just think Atrix owners should start looking to this ROM, rather than waiting for Motorola to push out ICS...of which I doubt they will do anyways.

All we need is start work on porting Roms/updates from the Atrix 2 to our Atrix's so when they get their 4.0 update we can just port if we don't get one too. And I wouldn't be so skeptical captivate made it to official gingerbread even though infuse which is the closest phone on the network got theirs before with no hope for its predecessor before it. Even if its not official during the past months we've gotten updates off of Moto test servers before they were released.
I think this horse has been beaten enough.... dont you all think so?? We'll get it when/if we get it.... until then, be happy with what ya got available..... OR go buy yourself a device that has ICS available already... or is 100% certain to get the update....

Kudos that you have a working camera. But, from what I hear, most CM9 ROMs don't have a working camera.

Won't work.
Atrix 2 uses an OMAP CPU.
It's only similar in name.

[REQ] Port of rascarlos rascream to crespo4g

Well, I think I speak for every nexus s user when I say rascream rocks and I think I speak for all crespo4g users when I say WE WOULD LOVE A PORT/BUILD.
Not sure how tough it would be, I can't imagine it being super tough as its been done before. I guess you could just say I'm envious of crespo users who get to enjoy rascream
Not trying to be a forum nazi at all, just a heads up. I think @rascarlo did not want the link to Rascream posted anywhere other than the Trinity kernel thread. If he has changed that protocol, I apologize.
However, I did thank you because I would love to give rascream a try on my crespo4g as well...

Whoops, I wasn't aware. Took er' down, wouldn't be so smart to anger the developer of said rom lol.

I really hope it gets ported eventually. I've read nothing but good things about it from some pretty avid users. From what I understand its a treat. Idk if I would wanna deal w a bunch of different versions of the same from if I didn't have the device either tho. Too many headaches. One can only hope since its a real similar device that he will give us a run at it tho.

This, albeit spelling.
Not everyone is familiar with this ROM you speak so highly of. What differences does it bring beyond the features we already have? Does it make waffles and blueberry syrup?

Really??? In comparison to the 5 months they had ICS before us and the fact that the world tries to forget ns4g like we are lepers, this is what sets off your jealousy??? This rom must be better than sex then haha.... I must try this rom!
Actually it shoots out rays of sunshine, and Canadian bacon.
To those unfamiliar, this rom its based off of aosp with the minimal things you'd need from aokp/CM added in, also dark themed and modded. Take a gander at the trinity thread to read through nothing but good experiences and long battery life, besides the latest build has gotten over 1,000 downloads.
^ If I'm inaccurate on that, feel free to kick me

If it's ported I'll give it a shot...My phone's been shooting out crappy rainbows and unicorns left and right with AOKP lol....don't get me wrong....I love the rom
It's funny at first...but after 3 months, I'm sick of the damn unicorns already lol Thank god for theme chooser!!
My phone never could run aokp very well
Tried slim ics, was nice, but missing some things I like in CM. So to me rascream seems like the perfect mix, while nice and slimmed down
To the top

I don't think he's rascarlo is going to build for us, too much trouble for him I guess.
Hopeful for a port though
