As long as you're on stock Rom and not a frankenstien package you can upgrade when there is an upgrade available for your country/ carrier. If you want upgrade before use odin

The latest Samsung build I tried was KI4; excellent firmware and is leaps and bounds above the Bell firmware in every aspect. There are newer 2.3.5 builds, but I'm not on a Samsung based ROM currently.
Bell Canuck thread.
Firmware thread.
Search Original Android Dev for the latest/greatest firmware; it changes rapidly.
I wouldn't worry about updating your firmware via Kies if you're on Bell; you may NEVER see an update.

thanks for your fast reply guys !
but I dont understand why everyone tell (you must check your cell version like KG2 ,KG3 etc.. and its must be the same) and you guys running very different think as we should in North america ? like some guys running poland version ?

Ive tried to pu a different modem in the phone section of odin and clicked on start and its just freezed so I was like SHHHHHHHIT did I just broke it so its ok I was able to fix it right after !
I suppose I should not just one file in PDA but in all the 3 right ? and all the 3 MUST be the same right ?

Read and research some more until you're comfortable. You only have to worry about matching kernel to firmware if you're doing a simple root, and retaining your current firmware. I've run 3 or 4 of the XXK_ _ firmwares, which are all Euro specific. No issues whatsoever.
Bell would likely tell you to pound sand if you tried to get warranty work done however, despite the fact you would have an official Samsung firmware (but not Bell's firmware).
When/if you flash a non-Bell firmware follow the instructions in the thread I linked to the letter, and yes, PDA is all you need, it has CSC, kernel, etc... in it.
You can then track down a CF-Root kernel for that firmware.

First noticeable difference is that baseband version is different from previous versions, i think different from JPM too...
Will try this firm for a day or more and will post the comments.

free firmware with chinese as default language
I flashed this yesterday, after having bvjp9 for a while. I like it and it certainly feels faster. UK English was default language for me, although, i had to change the keyboard from Chinese to Samsung. No issues thus far, and little bloatware.

it wont work from JPM. You need to rollback to DDJG6 and then update to this one....
Also remove boot.bin and sh.bin from package to avoid bricking
i notice this ,Taiwan ver is ZFJPF is Provider firmware
have Q MARKET and some useless software inside
this ver I5801ZHJPF is me update from kies ZHJH1 "street buy ver"
it have a "windows live msg" is only work on hongkong 3G network(wifi is not work)
Been using this ROM since morning. So far so good. Below is my observation:
1. Battery bug is there. When battery goes down, restart phone and it is good again
2. GPS is same as JPM. Got sattelite connection in under 10 seconds
3. I dnt know but looks like its me with the popping sound. Majorly happens when i am using headphones and screen goes Blank. Wake up the phone and it pops
4. Media Scanning takes longer than JPM

The version I used was ZHJPF, downloaded from another post, using medifire, before this was released by Samfirmware, and there are no erroneous apps present.
I am now able to browse the internet using HSPDA, previously only 3G was available to me using JP9. Perhaps my GiffGaff signal has improved, but it seems coincidental.
It is most definitely faster, than JP9, and, I will be keeping a close watch on battery life. WiFi and GPS are also working well. I am now rooted, and my Live Wallpapers are running smoothly.
I wanted to keep my 5801 identity, and until we get something decent in Europe, I would recommend this firmware, as a good Froyo base.

Tried removing cache, factory reset but unable to upgrade to this one...

The Baseband version for this is I5801ZHJP3; not sure that helps you, but when I flashed initially, I went from JP9, and did not factory reset, and it worked just fine as an upgrade. I tried it, liked it and then reset and clean flashed.
Samfirmware twittered Froyo by the end of April for Galaxy 3, so our best bet is to try and use what we can for now.

Gingerbread on Orange

Is the gingerbread update available yet, on Orange? I tried checking on kies a few days ago and it said I have the latest version, but I have froyo 2.2.1
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
In a word, no. Samsung withdrew the Gingerbread updates due to some fault or whatever so the only ones available are the JV1, JVK, JVB and JVA Roms which are floating around at the moment but these are primarily for unlocked devices so I don't know what effect they may have on your phone if its locked to Orange
So when will we get it?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Why don't you ask Orange?
So when will we get it?
Very simple answer
After Samsung release it and Orange customise or sodomize it and Orange upload it to the Kies server .
More complicated answer Ask Samsung .

It will be weeks after the stock unmolested firmware is re-released. Im on orange too and debranded mine because I got bored waiting for Oranges 2.2. It is still sim locked though (hasnt caused any problems)If you decide to try this make sure youre 3 button download/recovery is working though-mine wasnt originally-but is now thanks to the good peeps here.
If you look in the forums you will find a free network unlock solution too.
After flashing all the Gingerbread roms though I find I keep returning to Darky's 9.5 (Froyo based).
If you do decide to de-brand & network unlock you should also consider changing you CSC to XEU too that way kies will check for the official European i9000 rom instead of a network branded version.
You can always re-flash back to a carrier rom should you want to though.
You can always re-flash back to a carrier rom should you want to though
But where would you get one from ?.
That seems to be a problem 99% do not save carrier rom and few are available elsewhere .

Just like me I to hunt around for "t-mobile galaxy s odin" and sure enough google provided me with a link to a t-mobile 2.2.1 rom flashable via odin, failing that you could always use fwspoof to emulate a older carrier from and have kies re-install the carrier update.
Just thought you might have a secret stock .

Orange delayed and delayed 2.2 for the SGS, it was supposed to come out in November last year and ended up being January for the official release. This was months and months after the official unlocked versions came out, so I wouldn't hold your breath on it being a quick release.
That said 2.2.1 seemed to come out relatively quickly compared to 2.2
Fingers crossed they get bored modding all these releases with their own crap and have it as downloads from the market...as it should be.
I may have missed it in the Orange Terms and conditions, but a while a go when I read through them, I couldn't spot anything about modding phones making warranties being void (although I'd double check), so you could always try a custom ROM if you can't wait.
Logicalstep
I hooked up my galaxy S to Kies yesterday morning and was offered 2.3.3 from Orange, Installed it and all went well ... until I tried using the 3G instead of wireless, I cant access 3G at all. anyone else having this issue?
I have checked the APN and that is fine.
here's some more detailed info about the firmware:
Firmware version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9000BVJV2

get yourself the stock orange rom from your country, to have it in case of warranty
and install a custom one
Just root your phone, make a Nandroid-backup (CWM-backup), save this backup on your PC and then you can flash a custom-ROM.

Don't suppose you could explain how to get hold of a stock rom for a branded phone? I'd like a stock OrangeUK rom with all the bloatware and stuff just in case I need to send it for repair.

No need for explanation anymore I used checkfusdownloader to download the froyo update for orange uk. The available gingerbread update is fubar from what I've been reading in the web.

Official 2.2.2 UK SBF

So... I've been busy this morning and have a positive thing to share with you: the official 2.2.2 UK SBF, straight from the rsdsecure servers from Motorola!
Right now I haven't tested it, because my Milestone 2 is backing up everything. I suggest you do it too, if you want to flash this SBF.
Also: make sure you have an 2.2 SBF ready, in case things mess up - http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone2
Links for the DE and Argentina version are also found there.
Well, let's start with some Hash tags:
MD5: ac65e0b74eb551e030f42adfca1eef7f
SHA1: 9541f1be95a4d4944b6e0068fd192c3ec66958ad
CRC32: C48789C2
And the link: http://www.multiupload.com/JJGBOQFM7E
Don't hesitate to discuss this ROM. And please don't come asking for ROM's for other countries. I think the most important ones are available now.
Oh, and if your phone bricks. I didn't force you to install the SBF.
do you know what the build number is?
Android version is 2.2.2
Build number is MILS2_U6_2.4.24
As of now I've been unable to root this version.
Edit: You can get root with SuperOneCLick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682

so it's the same as o2de version, isn't it? btw, movistar's build number is 3.23.0. wonder which one is better, hmm
The Movistar uses different GSM/WCDMA frequencies. It might not work in European/Asian countries, not to forget that it'll probably doesn't support your locale.
If you check the Milestone 1 SBF's, you'll notice the Argentina SBF's all have a different build number.
Anyhow, you can test it out yourself, nobody's keeping you from it

It's amazing to heard this, but, is this meaning that 2.3 will not coming soon?
And, Is there any highlight in this 2.2.2 UK SBF?
Thank you.
Hate to bring it, but I don't believe Gingerbread is coming to the Milestone 2. I believe this is the update Motorola was talking about.
This version was created on 02/23/2011 and still isn't officially distributed. So... 1+1=2
well, i think you people could be more optimistic.
2.3 may still come to us. i think they release 2.2.2 because they have no reason to keep working on it. i think that reason is 2.3.
well, who knows. just be patient.
if you ask me what i'm really expecting, that will be a custom rom based on uk rom. (since my sim card doesn't work with Brazil SBF) Meanwhile, Motorola won't give us a de-blured, customized, and tweaked rom.
Is this rom a RC or beta version? If it's a RC, I really would like to flash it right away. I already had my rom backed up just now.

You could try out uk roms. I brought my mm2 in HK, and since the first day I have been using the UK rom.
There are few small changes, that I've noticed:
Obviously the keyboard. The Euro and Pound sign both work
The signal strenght is shown correctly (@HSPA it would only show 5 bars when the connection was that strong, otherwise there where only 4, while @2G there where always 5)
(HE-)AAC Tags seem to be read correctly
Data manager can now create a buffer with data intensive tasks; it will execute those when connected to WiFi or something like that
It's possible to see how much data you've used

New Firmware out on Kies now

Have just been offered Kl4 on kies in uk, no hacks.
Kl4 Kl1 KH2 (XEU)
What network you on pal?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
What network you on, is it KI4 2.3.4 or 2.3.5?
Just checked on my unbranded (XEU), Kies says my firmware - KI4 2.3.4 is the latest
From FUS Downloader
Product Code: GT-I9100LKAXEU
Latest firmware: I9100XWKI4/I9100XEUKH2/I9100XXKI1/I9100XWKI4
Modified: 16/09/2011 08:43:47
Filename: GT-I9100_XEU_1_20110916084335.zip.enc2
Its an unlocked phone from p4u unbranded and I'm on three, but theres no sim in the phone when I've connected. I've not downloaded it yet its still plugged in an showing. I didn't really want to be first trying it because my phone has no problems and I don't want to lose the 5x4 icon setup unless I'm forced too and I don't know whether this will do that to my phone. By the way its never been upgraded yet from its original rom of KE7 KE4 KD1.
Firstly Kies wont remove any of your apps/settings, if you have rooted the phone you will lose this. It sounds like you are being offered the upgrade to 2.3.4 which has been out a while. 2.3.5 is the one we are waiting on which is a different KI4.
Is there anyway I can check for you without going through with the full upgrade, the other day I handled a new galaxy w in p4u and that had 2.3.5 in it I took a photo of it, every write up and comment on that phone says 2.3.3. Lets hope things have moved on, but as I said in op didn't really want to try it first.
See attached
Thank you. I've been reading about the Kl4 in the discussion thread thats not officially out , I don't supposed you would care to comment on whether its worth my upgrading, whats the balance of losses and gains you find in this release as apposed to the one I've got.
It's up to you whether you want to upgrade the fw, if you're on 2.3.3 I would do it, we could new waiting a while for Samsung to release 2.3.5 on kies for unbranded phones.

Thanks,
Antony

It seems to me that it is faster than KI3 and with better battery life.
The only difference is that it is official now!
Happy flashing!
The XXKI4 is not the same as the XWKI4. Both have been available in the firmware thread in the dev forum a while now.
Thanks for that. I have flashed and had the fastest kies flash ever. Thanks for the info.

That was the Orange update ....
I thought my luck was here at long last.
I spoke to Samsung couple of days ago and they have no idea when it be released as they have so many network to cater for, they say it will come out but not any time soon so I have returned the phone for same reason.
With the new Variant P even the 3 micro USB jigs will not reset the counter fingers cross they don't check it.
O2 Did not even know last week that the phone they where dispatching was not the same version and insisted that the update was out.

Hi guys,
Just got back on the forum after many years.
My wife wants to know what the ICS update will do, and if it actually is worth attempting to update her 2 month old i9100 (O2/Tescos) ... e.g. pros/cons
We'd really appreciate a quick reply or link.
Thanks

well, its not quite as reliable (a few glitches here and there). it looks nice and so on. haven't noticed a lot of differences. (when signing into an open wifi network, it gives a notification that you need to accept terms and conditions - if that makes sense - which i like). if she isnt a nerd like me, who likes new things, i'd probably say don't bother. But others on here may disagree.
hope this helped

me too ! great to see that people are so nice and upload this
Thankyou ever so much for this!
No problem guys i'd been stuck on custom firmware and managed to update via kies using SpoofFw and saved the file as I knew people had been looking for it for ages including me lol.
I have just bought a used O2 I9100P but when I connect with kies I get:
"your device does not support software upgrading via kies"
Anyone else had this problem?
My device is identified on Kies as... PDA:KJ4 PHONE:KI3 CSC:KJ2 (XXX)
On device info:
PDA : I9100PXXKJ4
PHONE : I9100PXXKI3
CSC : I9100PO2UKJ2
Further to this when I enter *2767*4387264636#
I get:
SELLOUT SMS
[1]Sellout SMS: OFF
[2]PCode:Not Active
[3]Moderod
I also have noticed the imei on about phone does not match the sticker inside the phone.
The phone seems to not be rooted. I have no experience with rooting and flashing.
Any help with getting this phone back to stock GB or ICS and the correct IMEI would be greatly appreciated.
If I flash the Rom you have uploaded above using Odin will my Phone be back to "normal" and work as it should on Kies?
@Darius i don't know but maybe this post/thread could offer an insight. I Googled 'sellout sms' as never heard of it!
