Modaco ROM alternatives?

I'm just wondering what's so good about the Modaco ROMS... From what I was reading it's the best thing to ever happen to Hero but I've flashed it and it actually seems slower/laggier than my stock ROM... should this be?
My stock ROM was 2.73.XX but I can't remember the exact build number. I'm using Modaco 3.0... are there any other ROMS out there I should consider trying? I'm looking for the fastest and most responsive ROM out there. I do A LOT of multitasking so I'd like to have a ROM that can keep up.

If you did a complete data wipe/factory reset, while having the Modaco Rom, the Hero should be a lot more responsive and faster.
I like Modaco rather than stock rom because it removes some useless apps and allows for more customization. Btw, another alterative to the stock and Modaco is the [email protected] and the Clean ION Roms.
There are several different Roms, the differences is the types of apps removed/installed and the Android firmware.

i like modacos roms, because they work reliable and good. with pauls roms i am sure that he has tested them well, and i can use them as basis for my own modifications, or just can push them to my friends' heros without having them complain that something doesn't work. also in case you need support you can ask paul, he is really a nice guy.
there are some other roms, but imho mcr3.0 is by far the most evolved rom, esp. for everyday use. check the development section here for other roms, including the brandnew android 2.1 roms

Well here's the thing. I didn't wipe/factory reset before I Flashed the ROM. After flashing it went into a reboot loop, it would keep rebooting and when it got to the last boot animation, reboot again... I then did a wipe using the recovery boots wipe option and then it booted fine... Maybe I should do another wipe and flash again? It sucks though because now I've customized it back to the way I like it... I hate having to do that all over again. I guess I need to do the A2SD thing so I don't have to redownload my apps again... that was annoying when I had to do it after flashing Modaco's.... I couldn't even remember all that I had installed lol.

Anyone think reflashing might make it better?

I've been using MCR since about 2.2 so I can't speak for 3.0, but when I first flashed with 2.2 I didn't factory reset or format my SD card and it was a complete fail... apps force closing constantly, unable to recieve SMS, and other assorted weirdness.
So I factory resetted, reflashed and from that point MCR has run very smoothly and each update has gone OK (except for one where i had to format and repartition my SD card for A2SD, but didn't lose any settings).
So my advice would be that if you go to the effort of starting with a clean slate you'll get a much better user experience, which is what all us existing MCR users have...

streetdaddy is spot on. Do a clean wipe and then a rom flash.
I'm using MoDaCo 2.9. For my Hero, 3.0 ate up a lot of my phone's internal memory and kept saying I was running out of memory. The differences are minuscule and the speed improvement is about the same.

I started using Pauls ROM as soon as I got my Hero (which was a few days after release) because the stock ROM was toilet, and I've not looked back. The ROM itself is excellent and the support is first-class.
Make sure to wipe before installing. Once you've got it up and running you shouldn't have to wipe it when you upgrade next time.

Very Few ROMs or kernels work on my DHD

Basically, I have s-off and the official clockwork mod recovery installed. However, the same problems occurred with paul's version of custom recovery.
When flashing, I always go through the process of erasing all the partitions via mounts and storage, then i erase davlik cache and battery stats.
Then I install the ROM by the zip install.
And with kernels, I just install (not aware of any other steps that are needed)
But this is where I come unstuck. I am currently on RaiderX303's Cyanogen port. But I can't get any other roms to work. The same with kernels. Basically, flashing always completes with no errors, but then it crashes/stops at the second spash. So on core droid, it crashes on the android with a green circle going round it.
Anyone got any idea why this might be happening? Couldnt find any reference to it from anyone else.

tried getting clockworkmod from rom manager? the earlier version has a bootloop issue

I have the same problem with the Core Droid Rom, I believe its the kernal it has,some devices don't like it. The phone don't like the overclock, Infact not many do work on my device.

When you say erasing the partitions , do you mean wiping?, I personally would try installing ROM Manager from the market and letting that install the rom from SD, select wipe and backup before flashing and see if that helps at all, Can you flash the CM RC-1?

I can flash that and also the leeDroid and hd Rom. Just don't like the core Droid and buzz kernals

yep I am installing by wiping, but on the last install I used rom manager and still the same problem. Just like vimto, I think it may be the Buzz kernel, so I will try a different kernel and see.

There are some strange issues, camera not working for some of us on raiderx303's ROM, which seem to point to possible hardware variation I wonder if this is a symptom of the same issue?, CoreHD uses buzz kernel as default doesn't it?
But didnt you say you had issues with the MCR? that is based on stock rom so am surprised at that

Yep, I was thinking the same. Maybe EU/US difference. I think the Kaiser has about 4 versions didnt it?

[Q] CWM problem

Good day all. I recently bought a Nook Color. I'm running CM7.0.2 along with gapps 20110613 from a 16gb SanDisk class 4 SD. When set up the apps (after enabling wifi) I got an error, due to the fact that my sucky router dropped the signal. As a result of this I was not able to download gmail, google maps, etc. My android market runs perfectly but I wanted to flash gapps so as to download gmail and the others. I went into ROM manager and updated to the latest CWM. However, no matter what I do I can't but into recovery. I tried n+power button, reboot into recovery from the power button menu, and from within ROM manager. All no go...it just booted into CM7, so I removed the SD card to boot into stock Nook 1.2 software. When I did this it brought me to the CWM recovery menu (SD card not in). Of course I could not select anything on the menu. Put back in the SD while still in the menu to try select an option but nothing. Shut it down by holding the power button and booted it back up and it went str8 into CM7. Shut down took out SD and it booted into stock Nook 1.2 software. What am I doing wrong guys? I'm trying to flash the overclock kernel and reflash gapps. THANKS

Could the reason gmail, youtube, googlemaps didn't install on setup be due to the fact that I'm not in the USA? If so I'd still like to know what the problem is so I can flash the overclock kernel.

No one has any idea? I know one option is to backup and redo everything, but I'd really like some troubleshooting ideas before.

Did you use the 1.3 image from verygreens thread? If so the old 7.0.* stables are not supported. You will need to back up and redo it either with the old image or a new CM7 version.

Yea I used the 1.3 in the thread with 7.0.2. What version cm7 would I need to use with the 1.3? 7.0.3 or a nightly,? Where would I be able to find an older image to work with 7.0.2 and what version of the image should it be?

The 1.3 image won't work with any 7.0.* versions. You should upgrade to either a recent nightly or the 7.1.0 RC. You could find an older image somewhere but there isn't much of a point as you would have to redo it all anyway so why not upgrade? Plus your battery life will improve by a lot as 7.1 RC and the nightlys have deep sleep.

As I said many times to newbie who runs CM7 off uSD that do not or should not mess up with ROM Manager. In fact, there are members also confirm that if booting off uSD, ROM Manager has no effect.
Based on what you, OP, described, you had flashed the CwM into the internal memory.
Keep your fingers crossed as I do hope you didn't screw up anything else.
Anyway, using verygreen's 1.3 image along with the latest nightly-built CM7 and the latest 06132001 gapps and boot it off uSD again. You should be fine.
Before that, fix your home wireless network first.

I decided to just go with 7.1RC1 since I wanted the better battery life. Is there a way to check about the CWM on the internal and how would I go about removing it if I did? I ask for warranty purposes ofcourse since I opted for the 2 year extended one. Also to flash upgrades and such, since you don't recomend using ROM manager then how should I go about doing it (i.e. overclocking kernel)?

1. I never have any issue related to battery with any nightly build that I've ever used. I am currently having the nb153 and it is fantastic.
2. Check CwM and how to remove off the internal memory? I don't know any quick way except restoring the original ROM.
Again, for warranty purposes, strongly suggest running off uSD
3. Updating by loading/copying/dragging the updated files onto the root folder (aka "boot" partition), then TRY loading into Recovery by:
a. combination of power/N buttons if you have skill or
b. let it boot normally into CM7, wait until completely loaded, then reboot and select "recovery" option. Keep yr fingers crossed. This is an easy method but if it doesn't work then option a is the only choice.

Sorry the battery issue was as compared to the current CM7 stable not the nightly. I got everything installed so far besides the overclock kernel. So I will try your recommendation for booting into recovery not using ROM manager.

You don't flash anything when running off an sd card you just boot into recovery and then reboot. Easiest way to get the overclock kernel would be to just upgrade to the latest nightly.

[Q] how to get rid of thor2002 ROM

Hi, flashed thor v14.2 but I decided to go back to taboonay so flashed taboonay again. But I still have programs from thor's rom that I can't get rid of. I even still have special icons that I don't like.
So, how do I get completly free from thor's ROM?

Buy a new ACER would be one way?
But, seriously, just flash it back to stock and then go from there.
PS> Dropping it in the toilet or running it through a cycle in your dishwasher works as well. This has been known to keep a ROM from giving you anymore errors.

By default the recovery tool doesn't actually format or erase the data partition of the memory (which is where all the apps are stored).
If you're running his CWM rev-1.6 recovery you can force a format by doing the following:
Go to "Backup and Restore"
Select "Toggle backup and restore of internal storage (/data/media)"
Go back to the main menu
Select "Mounts and Storage"
Finally, select "Format /data"
If you did it correctly, you'll notice that it will take a minute or two....
Now your A500 should be squeaky clean and ready for a clean fresh ROM flash.

Thor's Tabonay flavored ROM?
you still have Parts from earlier Thor's ROM!, sounds like you should of done a complete WIPE + FORMAT!
Never add a Rom to another (unless it's specified by rom builder, like a update on top of his own. sounds like you mixed THOR's (ASUS based) with Tabonay.

That's why I always put explicit wipe, format, and install instructions up, including video (not that half of them take the time to actually read, or watch).

Bionix 1.3.1 to ICS

Can someone please explain to me how to go from Bionix 1.3.1 to ICS? I have read a lot (perhaps too much) about GB bootloaders, etc. but am not sure what is required.
Do I need to have a GB ROM installed before going to ICS?
I have also seen guides for going from 2.1 to ICS, but that is not my situation.
I guess my main area of ignorance is that I have never flashed any bootloader of any kind.
If I go to ICS and want to restore my Froyo backup do I need to flash a bootloader before I do that?
Obviously I'm confused about the whole process.

See my guide to go from 2.1 to ICS and one if the top lines tells you how to go from Froyo to ICS.
GB bootloaders are no longer needed but suggested. Probably the only scary part of the whole process, but it is actually the easiest.

CM7 needed before ICS or not?

There are a couple of ICS Roms where you can come from froyo. You have to probably flash it twice to get into the specific cwm.
To get back to you bionix, you have to use Odin to get back to stock.

This is from a different thread in a different context. Someone was asking how to flash a custom ROM, IIRC.
If you want ICS, you have to flash CM7 first, let it bootloop, pull the battery, reflash and then once it settles, flash ICS.
Also, don't apologize for being detailed or thinking that you are reading into too much, Wished more were like this.

I just did it
If you follow the instructions in the Passion ICS thread it's pretty straightforward. I had never used Odin before even though I had flashed Bionix almost a year ago. I'm not a phone guru, just somebody who likes to mess with these custom ROMs.
These steps are high level, you can find specific links in numerous places.
Here's what I did:
- Download Odin
- Download the required files to flash the phone back to stock 2.1 (.pit file and .tar file)
- Backup apps with Titanium (don't bother backing up the system it's different in newer versions anyway and all you'll have is trouble if you try to restore system settings)
- Backup anything else you feel is important on your internal and external SD cards
- Use Odin to flash the phone back to stock
- Root the phone (using the update.zip technique)
- Install clockwork recovery (I found an update.zip for this too)
- Flash the Cyanogenmod version of ICS (no longer under development but you need it for the boot loaders). You will likely encounter a boot loop in this process. Don't panic, just pull the battery once it loops a few times. Boot back into recovery and flash again.
- From this point you can now flash ICS using clockwork, following this you can restore your apps with Titanium if desired
ICS totally rocks by the way. I've been using Passion v13 RC1 for a week now. Tried the newest one Euphoria but it didn't work out for me.

I have to admit that I never tried ICS. I have been using an ICS theme for a long time so my phone looks like it has ICS on it. I was also leary of the mute/unmute problem I had read about and wasn't sure about how well good GPS was.

I've been testing out the ICS that is to become CM9 with the latest build being 16 found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1503038
It's really stable... granted not everything is implemented such as a number of the settings screens. But I was on CM7 when I installed it so I was able to just flash it direct.

This method works great! I used this last week and had some trouble with boot loops. But nothing that can't be fix with removing the battery. I suggest finding the youtube video that is on the ICS Passion thread. The person does it on real time, so you can follow along as you do it.
I love ICS passion. It is as smooth or even smoother than Bionix.

Just follow instructions in OP of attached link and your good.
-Download ICZen and place it on your internal sd
-Reboot to Clockwork Recovery
-Perform a wipedata/factory reset
-Go to mounts and storage and format the system partition
-Flash your downloaded ICZ rom file
-From the main menu of recovery, perform a wipedata/factory reset again
-Reboot
-On bootup, give it a few minutes to settle in, reboot and use as normal.
-Enjoy your ICZen!

No need to have GB boots and if you want to go back,odin to stock to reflash Bionix and then your nandroid.
This is a great ICS rom and I'm a huge Bionix fan,with a 1.3.1 and 1.3.1 Fishman final nandroid backup.

I flashed Passion ICS rc13 on 2 Vibrants, one from Bionix 1.3.1 and another from trigger 2.2 and skipped some steps (like GB bootloader) and they are working just fine.
My steps:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. Flash CM GB.
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. Flash Neobuddy ICS
5. Flash kernel.
6. Let the phone boot, sign up and do its setup.
All in all, took maybe 30 minutes first phone and 20 min second phone once I got more comfortable.

bionix 1.31 striaight to CM7 then on to ICS?
Do you have to go back to stock? Why couldn't you just flash to CM7 then go on to ICS? I am on Bionix 1.31 and this process just seems easier.

I think mute/unmute is hit or miss. But if you are worried about or need GPS, dont flash an ICS rom.
Also, when upgrading fro 2.2 -> 4.0, take out your external sd card prior to that! It might cause a bootloop when flashing the initial CM7 rom. I happened to me and also other people on youtube (where I found out, was the source of the problem)

Yep you can, just make sure you make a back up and clear all data

It's mainly to get rid of any ghosts left from other roms to avoid any bugs not caused from the rom you install and avoid giving a rom a bad review without giving it a clean canvas to start with.
