New A7 owner with a few questions please - A7 General

An existing Asus Transformer owner who just picked up a factory refurbished A7 for $129 (let me know if interested in source). I really like this device - however, I did have a few issues for which I can't seem to find an answer for via search - wanted to see if someone could please help:
1. And way to enable the g-sensor fix without installing a custom ROM?
2. Any way to force wifi to stay on all of the time, so that I get alerted when new emails arrive instantly?
Thank you! Only rel drawback I see with this device is the lack of multi-touch, but other than games, I don't really use it much anyhow...

Factory firmware is crap period, your best bet is to load one of dexter mod, froyo, gingerbread or honeycomb rom, the dextermod 141 and patch 142 will solve both of your problem, 142 is by far the best thing that ever happen to the elocityA7..

Ok, thanks for your input. I was hesitant to upgrade to a custom ROM because they all seem to break bluetooth... But, I can't remember if dextermod breaks bluetooth or not. I think I'll start flashing away and checck out the alternatives out there (I also just realized that there is no ad-hoc support in stock firmware either).
Awesome little device though, especially for $129 - Same CPU as my Transformer in this little bad-boy! True honeycomb would be nice, be want do you want at this price level. Plus I saw that they are introducing the A7+ now, with true mutli-touch, higher-res, etc - so probably not much interest on their part in upgrading the original A7...
One last question - what about a TUN-capable kernel or the A7? Would love to be abe to VPN into my Cisco-powered office....
Thanks again!

Where did you source an a7 for $129? I was looking to pick up my first tablet and the best I've seen on a refurb is $169.
Max

I can almost gurante you that no one who own the A7 will recommend the 7+, the reason i buy mine was to support an american company in pennsylvania, every time i call all they are intrested in is your personal info they never correct any shortcommings in their software if it wasn't for dexter this table would have die a long long time ago, i wonder what become of the 10" they were suppose to release..

- build.prop (ro.kernel.android.checkjni=false) enables Skype to function (and maybe other apps)
- usb stick support added.
- changed sdcard handler to stock, but with exception it only work until you eject sdcard/usb , and a reboot is only way to remount (or restart vold daemon which is from a shell)
- honeycomb bootanimation added.
- Files app added (for copying network files to tablet) is buggy with pictures handling in folders. (might be removed again)
- VPN (script + vpn settings enabled/added)
- HDMI resolution changer added in settings (480p -> 1080p output available)

Really? I was pretty impressed with this little device even with the stock firmware (especially for $129!). I might even consider the 7+ when it comes out. I owned a $250 B&N Nook Color and this is WAY nicer than that was!
Although, I do believe that Asus has spoiled me with firmware updates, etc - I've never seen a company support their products like Asus does - I love all of the constant firmware updates....

Where did you get the A7 for $129 ?. I just got one from 1saleaday for $149 and thought that was the best price around. I went back to 1saleaday for another one and like it says, it's for one day only. I would like to get one for my son at college since I think it is great once you put on Dexters Rom. Do you have a site????
Thanks Demi

Sure - you can get them @ MicroCenter for $129 everyday, BUT, I found that is an in-store only thing - can't order online. Not sure why they are so cheap, especially being sold @ retail stores! I'm wondering if they should have been $229! Shhh - don't tell anyone - I want to pick up another one for my son too! I originally bought this one for him for christmas, but I liked it so much that I decided to keep it!
So, unless you live close to a MicroCenter, the best I've heard of is $169 @ NewEgg I think it was....

Anyone know of a wifi keep-alive program that works with the A7? I want my wifi to be on 24/7 so that I get alerted instantly of new emails, etc... Besides that, I've found that it just takes way to long to reconnect and go through all of the new email checks, etc every time I turn the unit on it takes the A7 a few minutes to "get caught up" (system is too slow to use while this is occuring), which kind of defeats the purpose of "always on".
I've tried the CM7 setting to never turn off wifi, but it doesn't seem to work (wifi is still off when i turn the A7 back on).
This is the LAST stumbling block I've run into with the A7 - everything has been solved (ad-hoc, G-sensor fix, Market, TUN-capable kernel) - if I could fix this last thing I'd be really happy!
Anyone? Please?
Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, tablet will turn off all connections if backlight = 0
The only way to avoid this problem is BackLightKiller. It turns backlight to 0.1 or less but not equal 0, so tablet will work and wifi will work
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967931
Additionally you must use another app to restore WiFi it it suddenly turns off...

Interesting - I never had it be so hard to force wifi to stay on before on any other device - now I know why (disabled backlight=disabled network connections) - strange.
Thank you very much for the explanation and the workaround - I'll give it a shot today! Does it really destroy your battery life? I guess it would be nice if it were easy to swtich between always-on (w/backlight hack) and the default scheme - this way you could just "enable" forced-wifi whenever you needed it....
Thanks again - I'll give it a shot a report my findings!

Couldn't get BackLightKiller to work... I installed it on my A7 and when I run it, I just get a blank screen with the title "BackLightKiller" at the top. If I press the Menu button, I get an About and a Settings. I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to do with this app to make it work....
Has anyone got this app working on the A7 (and actually keeping wifi on during sleep)??
Thanks!

What do you want this app to do? This app only sets backlight to 0.1, so tablet consumes less energy, but still working and wifi is working, and you able to get email.
Nvidia was freaky when constructed first reference plate on tegra2 aka harmony.
When you pressing power - you pulling tablet in sleepmode like hibernite in microsoft windows. Even alarm stopping work and tablet does not receive any signals except power on.

That exactly what I want - everything on, but brightness set as low as possible. However, this app doesn't seem to do anything with the brightness... When I run the app, all I get is a black screen with a white title bar that says the name of the app. Is the screen supposed to go completely black when you run the app (by turning the brightness down)? If so, thats not happening with mine. The white title bar is at normal brightness and never goes away....

In our case we can not do more. Backlightkiller paints black on 95% display and it consumes less power definitely.
You can use Screen Filter from my list - it sets brightness.
I don't know more solution.

Interesting.... Oh well, thanks for your help! I'm not sure it uses any less power though, becasue the backlight is still at the same brightness, just a blank screen....
This is a major issue with this tablet for my use, which really sucks - I really liked this little thing! But, if it can't even tell me when I get a new email, then it's not very useful to me. Time to rebox it and give to it my 9-year old fr Christmas, I guess! Damn...
Do you think there is any chance the CM7 wifi-disconnect policy will ever work properly for the A7?
Thanks again!
EDIT: Ouch - it's even worse than I thought - even things like Alarms will not wake up the device in order to sound the alarm! Ugh! Surely, I'm not the only one that sees this as a huge usability issue?

Market Help?
I have the Elocity A7, have had it for a few weeks now, running Dexter's 142 update. Works great in every respect ( I can deal with the multi touch lack) except that I cannot get the Market to allow me to purchase apps. I can get the free ones all day long, but get an error every time I try to purchase one. I am using the same account as on my phone, which works just fine. I have tried installing the latest market update and cleared the cache for the market app, still not working for apps that require purchase.
Any ideas?

Phone Keeps FREEZING!!! What the heck Samsung?!!!

My galaxy S freezes out of the blue, and i can't even turn it off. Sometimes i look to check the time, and noticed the phone is turned off. Both problems are only corrected by taking out the battery, and putting it back in...and then waiting for it to happen again!
Is this a software issue that 2.2 will fix? Should I exchange for a new one, or will all of them have the same problems, if bought from the same place? (Best Buy in Vancouver Canada)
either your battery is not good, or your got a defective phone
the new SGS out of the box works smooth
what is your firmware version?

Sounds like a bad phone. I got mine from one touch in delta and it has been perfect. Return asap and get yourself a working unit.

Thought you meant lag. Mine lags a lot (stock firmware) and sometimes "freezing" seems the word.
But no, that's not it. Perhaps you can try a hard reset and check your sdcard too, something isn't ok.
I'm actually experiencing the same issue. My phone goes black and seems to be happening more in low wireless connection areas. Like in a mall. With the the *# code I get I9000UGJG9.
if you have LAG issues, install the one click lag fix in the development area
problem solved
Its not LAG issues it a complete freeze issue. My phone goes black like standby mode and will not come out of it. The only fix is a battery pull or holding the power button for 6 seconds. The same issue as the op.

that is a factory defect
take it back, exchange it for a good one
this latest firmware is really good, you should not see anything like that
Allright will do. I figured as much I didn't want to bring it back I already purchased some apps. Guess I'll have to wait for my store to get some.

you do not lose the Apps
once you log back into your Gmail account in your new phone, when you go into Android Market, they will remain in the Download section
those apps are saved in your Gmail account, not in the phone.
that's the cool thing about the android phones
so if you ever switch to say an HTC Android, or a Nokia Android, you can still re-install those apps (assuming they are compatible)
Oh sweet I wasn't aware of that. I sold a couple of the Galaxy S and I'm the only one with this issue as of yet. Hopefully it isn't a common one. I've been trying my best to convert Iphone buyers in most cases when I'm sold out to get this phone I just hope it delievers for my customers and they won't have the same issue as me.
Are u futzing with oclocking or changing CPU mode ? This causes hangs with black screen

you do know you don't just slide
you have to move the entire picture of the "slide" out of the phone frame for it to unlock
if you say only slide it partially, it will just bounce back and remain locked.
if you have thick fingers it wont work properly
you might be better off using the 3rd party unlock screens, specially the kinds that needs no sliding.
i have that issues nowadays too. randomly "freezes" on the black screen, i can call through my phone (ringing) but there's no notification / vibration or anything or sorts.
the only way is to reboot the phone and it'll randomly happen again after some time >.> and the call that i've just missed isn't showing on the call-log either.
i hope it gets better overtime or i'll just have to reflash!
ps. was fine before i tweaked my cpu settings in sleep mode, you might wanna disable that if you're using it.
Mine has the same problem and by the looks of things a lot of people have this issue. I called customer support and after sometime the rep admitted this and said it will be fixed in next build however I doubt that
Then there are probably lots of diff units out there. The phone shouldn't freeze unless you are using a beta/alpha firmware (pretty unlikely - i've tested more than 10 different firmwares without a freeze), or set the core clock of the cpu to a higher & unstable frequency (OC). people claim that their phone can do 1.2ghz - that's nice, but each chip has a different capability.

[Q] Did Acer ruin honeycomb?

Problems I've got with the Acer A500:
GPS is very weak. I get the best reception with the back of the unit facing the sky but in normal orientation I'm lucky to get 5 sats.
Compass doesn't work, always 90deg off
Digitizer unresponsive 3 times, had to power off each time. Strangely enough, the last time this happened the buttons at the bottom (home, menu, etc) still worked but nothing responded when tapped on the main screen area.
Have to be careful about plugging and unplugging items while the device screen is off. The headset icon is still showing in the tray after having disconnected a cable last night when the screen was off. Have seen problems where external USB devices aren't scanned if the screen is off.
System shut down 1 time after showing a low power notice. I was at 80%. Haven't had this happen again.
Market, Maps, Firefox crash a lot. The latter is probably Mozilla's fault but the core apps shouldn't be this crash-happy.
Bluetooth sharing only shows visible devices and not paired devices. What's the F-ing point of pairing if I have to make a device visible before I can send a file to it?
No media scanner notification. It takes a while to scan external USB media and there's no indication the scanning is going on. The only indication that it's done is when media starts appearing in apps like gallery. On older revs of the OS there is a notice that scanning is ongoing.
Copy/paste annoying. Especially that you can't paste if there's no text in your editor!!! In 2.2 you tap once to bring up the picker/caret (don't know what the google term is) and you tap that to get a popup menu for copy/paste/delete. On the Acer you have to double-tap to select text and only then do you get a menu on the top of the screen. Trouble is, if you have no text in your document you can't paste because there's no text to select!
Can't turn the d**n sound off on the camera.
Have to drill down into the settings turn the "ringer" off to mute the system. Why isn't there a dropdown icon for that?
Some of these are certainly Acer's fault and are related to hardware specific to this device. The UI elements I'm left wondering about. This is the only Gingerbread device I've really used and I can't tell how much is default behavior and how much Acer messed with the OS and borked it.
It's possible I've become spoiled by the devs on XDA. I'm coming from a Vibrant and the dev action is furious with that device. I've regularly upgraded my device with new ROMs on the order of every 2-3 weeks since October and I'm currently using 2.2.1 on my phone.
Given that the bootloader is locked (and encrypted?) I'm thinking dev action isn't going to happen real soon and I'm further thinking about returning this. I hate the idea of doing that because in a lot of ways this is a really nice tablet. It's got the form factor and weight I want. It's responsive. wifi is good enough for my purposes and I can carry it throughout home and work with no connection problems. I've found ways to make it part of my device chain (doc markup, blogging, reading, music playing) and the price was was low enough for me to give it a try. For the most part I like the device.
Trouble is, the bugs are like having someone standing next to you randomly poking you in the ribs. It's not enough to call the police but if he doesn't stop I'm going to punch him in the nose. With the Acer the bugs aren't bad enough for me to throw it out the window but they're getting bad enough that this thing may get returned.
For those in the know, how much of what I've complained about is normal Gingerbread and how much has Acer likely borked?
For reference my kernel is 2.6.36.3-00001-g9b3ce2b and build is Acer_A500_1.104.02_COM_GEN1

Well, I think your thread is misleading. Tablets are new and there are going to be flaws in new products. That's why you don't buy the first new model of a car. But if you're going to, then understand there is always risk.
1. I have had no problems with the GPS.
2. I have had problems with the compass, but nothing unusual for a digital compass.
3. Unresponsiveness happens with pretty much every device. Mine has been unresponsive like 5 times already, but a power down and then up again fixes it beautifully. It's like a nice reminder to clear the system and make it run faster. This doesn't necessarily have anything to do with Acer. It could be Honeycomb.
4. Apps crashing. Happens. I'd think that it's Honeycomb, rather than Acer.
5. I've seen the headset icon on when I didn't have any headphones in. Oh no! Stop the presses! This occurs, sure, but that could be Honeycomb, not Acer. Also, are we sure it's not the music icon?
6. Bluetooth profiles are limited. Sure. But maybe that's a reminder to us all that Bluetooth is awful technology. This one is probably Acer.
7. Copy and paste, although annoying, isn't Acer.
8. Right now, it's not proper to open the bootloader for everyone. Don't hold that against any company.
Most of the things you mentioned really might have to do with Honeycomb rather than Acer. So don't trash the wrong company.
Now given that it's Honeycomb instead, it's new. It will have bugs and problems. Sit and wait or learn the trade and get in there and fix it.
Or wait until a future generation product.

....
Ya, I'm pretty much in the rorytmeadows and ardatdat camp. Considering Acer did very little to their OEM copy, I'd place the blame for a lot of the issues on HC.
The compass is definitely finicky. I've only ever got a solid read when my GPS was tracking - when it's not, the compass is definitely off (using GPS Essentials here which could also be an app issue). If there is a common degree variance, this can be coded in/out. Also, orientation matter - whether you have it in portrait, facing you, landscape facing up... There's a difference and the gyro checks.
I understand where some of you guys are coming from re. new releases having bugs. I can't accept that viewpoint. I paid for this device and while a few bugs are to be expected these days, some of the problems amount to beta level bugs that should have never left the factory.
If there were going to be regular releases of updates I'd feel differently but it seems clear that releases will likely only come from the devs and only after jumping through the hurdles and hoops that Acer has put in their way.
I think the A500 was worth trying but I'm still not sure it's worth keeping.
A BETA bug is something that is consistent (across all testware) and repeatable. Nothing you listed falls near that.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree. The general level of bugginess shown by the complaints in this forum alone cause me to classify this (and many other android devices) as beta.
With so many people willing to be paying testers, the manufacturers don't have any incentive to behave differently.

I don't see it. Maybe I'm biased *shrug* The majority (not all, of course) complaints or issues with the a500 (be them HW, SW or HC related) on this (and other) forum are sporadic and inconclusive. Not a lot of serious testing happening and a complaint like 'my gps can't see any satellites' doesn't mean a whole lot without more granular info. It doesn't help and it certainly shouldn't be used as part of a rationale. You gotta take those kinds of half-thought out complaints with a grain of salt.

I read this all the time - with games mostly, but the argument is the same.
How when a new game is released (pick your poison) you're bound to get a very small, thought vocal, minority who dig their nails into the support section complaining about 'players are paying to be testers' - or - 'their computer should be able to play it' etc. The argument being, 'it's suppose to act the way I want it to act' when in fact, that is never the case. With games, with hardware - software. 'It's suppose to act the way they want it to act' - We're just consumers. We consume. They create, we consume.
Now, I'm not trying to discount the importance of your view (I know it reads like I am but I'm not trying too - just trying to further the discussion). You're obviously having issues with the a500 and far be it for me to make lite of them. I think what is key here is that, for the majority of us, there aren't any of these kinds of issues and that, of the ones you listed, few are consistent and repeatable.
So I chalk it up to one of two things - you got a bum tablet or it's user error.

You're mistaking brief descriptions for incomplete testing or "thoughts.". I haven't described my testing methodology nor put down all the tests I've done because I'm not game for writing a paper on the subject.
I've been around quite a while and have been in development for decades and done my time in QA. I know how to test. Which is part of the point. I'm not running into these problems while doing things that qualify as something a user shouldn't do and I'm really not interested in helping Acer or Google iron out the bugs in their system.
Hell, I just did a factory reset and without installing any apps I had the Market crash twice while just browsing my paid apps list.
The argument being, 'it's suppose to act the way I want it to act' when in fact, that is never the case. With games, with hardware - software. 'It's suppose to act the way they want it to act' - We're just consumers. We consume. They create, we consume.

Yeah, know where you're coming from. My complaint isn't the same.
I want it to behave the way it used to
My UI complains stem from behavior that was present in 2.2x and is very different but harder to use in 3.x. They futzed with the UI for no good reason IMO.
So I chalk it up to one of two things - you got a bum tablet or it's user error.
Click to collapse
Well, it's not user error
I've just factory reset the thing and I'm going to spend a few hours using just the apps I can't live without and leave off the questionable utilities that might be destabilizing the system (widgetlocker, stuff like that) and see where that gets me.
So far it's not good though. 2 market crashes with a stock system.
All very fair and understandable. I've had my share of freezes/lockups and FC. There is no doubt that updates are needed. I'm just not convinced the majority of the issues are Acer related, but rather, Honeycomb related.
Hey Michael do us a favor and return it. I am having none of the issues you have listed with mine with the exception of some FC apps, but I attribute this to the apps not being optimized for HC since the tablet specific apps work perfect.
Sounds like you got a bum tablet, so you have 3 options. 1) keep it and keep complaining and hope you or another dev can fix your problems. 2) exchange it for a new 3) return it and wait a year or so til HC is more stable and out of this "beta" phase.

BTW michaelh99, I appreciate the fact that you're not flying off half-cocked and taking anything I (or others) have said out of context. It's important for mature and focused discussion to stay calm and proactive - with the goal being, resolution - not argument.
If bugs were completely out of technology before it was released to the public then we wouldn't have technology.

Thanks.
I'm not really expecting people to supply resolutions to the problems I've seen. It looks like most of them are problems with the first release. Some could be due to my personal usage patterns (apps I have installed) but others are clearly out of box bugs.
It may be that I need to bite the bullet and get a larger version of my phone (Samsung), which I've been very happy with. Like many people I wanted to pay as little as I could. May be that I went too low for my expectations.

If I can crash the market by browsing my paid apps after having done a factory reset and without having installed anything I would say they haven't met the minimum necessary to release the device.
The market is a core component of the system. If that's unstable, the whole device is suspect.
Why did you start this thread knowing that no matter what good things are said about the tablet, nothing would change your mind. If you are not happy with the device then return it and go on. The majority of the owners here are very satisfied with both the hardware and software of the Acer. I don't think anyone was expecting HC to run as smooth as apple os and if these were your expectations then you will never be happy for the time being.
Again, I'm assuming you started this thread hoping someone would agree with you, but the fact is that most of us do not. Your problems are way out of the ordinary and for all intended purposes unacceptable in this device. So again, return it. Your not doing yourself any service by keeping a faulty product.

michaelh99 have you considered posting a bug report to Google? For what it's worth, it may at least bring the issues you're having to their attention. It's placating but it can't hurt.

Impressions after a week...

A lot of us have had the device for at least week now so it would be a good time to post impressions after a bit more hands on time. I’ll start...
10 days in I’m still glad I got it but there are plenty of things that could be improved. I’ve been on HTC phones (Desire, Desire Z) before this running at different times standard HTC Sense ROMs as well as various versions of Cyanogen Mod and AOSP based ROMs. My views after 2 weeks of use:
* Loving the fact that Samsung appears to be treating this almost like a developer phone (ala Nexus) in terms of open bootloader, availability of source code etc. I’ve said my goodbyes to HTC precisely because of this.
* Based on the frequency of updates Samsung also appears to be focused on addressing issues. They are one if the first out of the gates for Gingerbread updates to their existing devices so I’m hoping they continue to focus on delivering on the latest versions of Android.
* Touchwiz is not as invasive as HTC’s Sense. It improves on stock android in many ways. My first Samsung phone so I can’t really speak of improvements over previous versions of Samsung ROMs but so far I don’t hate TouchWiz but I do find that they seem to take a lot of inspiration from Apple even when the standard Android implementation is better in some cases (I didn’t hate HTC Sense either but I did find it too far from stock for my liking). Having said that there are some totally brain dead decisions that Samsung appear to have taken which I just don’t get:
1) Default home screen on the left instead of the middle. Why copy Apple on this one when Android’s default makes so much more sense. I love having frequently used apps with a swipe to the right and an agenda widget on the left so I can get to both with a single swipe. Now I have to pick one.
2) Fixed icons at the bottom. I understand Phone and Apps being fixed but not messaging and contacts. I’d like to change those - hell, even Apple lets you change those. *** NEVERMIND *** See posts below. It CAN be edited.
3) Lock screen - talk about making something worse - this one takes the cake. Thank god for widget locker.
4) Dialer logs - I don’t want my SMS messages to show up on my phone dialer logs. There is no option to just view all calls without the rest of the stuff cluttering it up. (Yes I know I can switch to Dialer One but apart from this one major issue I actually like the default Samsung dialer).
* Wireless - Everything wireless about this phone has issues. May be a function of how thin it is but my experience so far:
1) Phone - Much improved after the latest firmware updates but data connection can take a while to latch on when moving out of WiFi coverage and sometimes just drops out for 5-10 minutes at a time for no apparent reason (even when the phone shows five bars in a strong signal area).
2) Bluetooth - The headset I have is not working well at all. Quality seems fine but every few seconds drops out or gets noisy for a second or so. The same headset works perfectly well with the HTC devices as well as with an iPhone.
3) GPS - Sometimes flawless but lock time is definitely a lot slower than the HTC devices. It also has a tendancy to lose lock a lot easier than the HTC devices. Other times it jumps around all over the place before getting a lock. Lots of weird behaviour here.
4) WiFi - Where other phones get weak coverage this one gets none. If you have strong WiFi signals everywhere you use the device this is not an issue. 5 Ghz also performs significantly worse than 2 Ghz.
* Battery life - It appears this phone has only 2 gears. A low gear for phone / SMS / push mail / browsing where battery life is excellent but then kicks into hyper-turbo mode if you use Flash video, games or anything taxing where it burns through battery life in no time. You can easily get through a whole day with power to spare if you stick to only the basic activities but best to use everything else while plugged in.
The reality is even with all these issues, I couldn’t give this device up. The power and speed coupled with the slim form factor and gorgeous screen are just too damn impressive and all the problems pale in significance. I might have had buyers remorse if the HTC Sensation was coming with an open bootloader and a slimmer profile but at the moment I don’t see anything that compares. I’m just hoping Samsung can fix some of the problems I’ve listed in software.
Regarding fixed items at the bottom: you can edit them from within the applications screen.

You can change those - Go to app drawer-> menu -> edit -> and drop the app you wants.

Nice honest and informative post. Most of the issues will hopefully be fixable once we start getting some custom ROMs I'm hoping. Or hopefully fixes direct from Samsung in regards to GPS, WiFi, and 3G. I guess time will tell.

Very puzzling that Sammy would have issues in key connectivity areas on such a high profile phone. Wonder if they''re all antenna related? As you say, hopefully not, and it's all solvable with SW.
Homescreen order
C'mon guys - it's not that hard to reorder your homescreens...
Just pinch zoom (helicopter mode) longpress & drag.....
Hope this helps you...

The issue isn't re-ordering. It's changing the default home screen from the left (on TouchWiz) to the middle (As on stock Android / Sense etc)

After my first day with this phone I switched to the the ADW Launcher, Samsung really didn't think the TouchWiz launcher through - not only the default homescreen being on the left, but also the fact that Apps in the drawer aren't sorted alphabetically.
I used to own the Samsung Galaxy Vibrant. It's disturbing that Samsung is still not getting the GPS working right!

I'm on the latest firmware but it's still pretty buggy...
I've tried switching to launcher pro but I still get crash reboots and loss of sound.
Last night I entered the pin and the phone just reboots.
I also loose the clicks on the pin screen. When this happens you have to reboot go get audio back...I tried playing an mp4 video with no sound when it was in this state and it just said unable to play. Of course it worked fine after a reboot...
So pretty buggy at the moment
mine has no bugs or what so ever, after 2 weeks of used i can never compare it to other phones performance either android or iOS,i used both before but this one is simply way above them..
no built in stock music widget was a dissapointment for me as well as the horrible lock screen style and the lag during wakeup..apart from that this phone is really amazing..but touchwiz needs some serious thought...

Agreed that this phone is as speedy and steady as the HTC Desire and iPhone 4 that I have owned. The trick to all these phones is that if you play around too much with settings, tweaks, launchers you are likely to get problems.

stock transformer now almost perfect?

the 8.6.5.9 update answered my few remaining OS niggles -- most importantly ad-hoc wifi tethering -- and with the wider availability of accessories (like a spare charging cable), i think i'm finally happy.
it also helps that i discovered "native" display mode on my toshiba tv so that the hdmi input from the TF is no longer clipped.
youtube HD plays beautifully (except in opera altho. i'm sure an update there is imminent) and i can c&p in polaris.
my tf is stable. very few crashes.
no need to root at all.
what's not to like now?
I agree, not many grumbles here at all either
If there was a way to block ads without rooting it would be perfect
That reminds me, I was going to take a look at my router, Im sure it has URL blocking in the settings, I might try adding the AdFree HOSTS list into there
At home, i am using peixelserv to block ads in my dd-WRT router for wifi conections.
Truely, i am still lookig for resons to root my TF.
Specially when netflix also works now, although the quality of movie is too bad, looks like it thinks tf is a phone and streams in low resolution.
I dont have any problem with my dock.
I want my tf to connect to serial port of my sun sparc servers using usb to serial cable. I dont know which software to use. I think it needs usb otg support which i guess honeycomb already has. This is the only reason i might do the root if it needs some hack.

Good point there...on Samsung TV's it's called Picture Size and you need to set it to "Just Scan" mode to show everything rather than 16:9 mode. Other manufacturers will have different but similar modes to adjust the display to show the TF output as it should.
8.6.5.9 WW rooted is perfect for me. I'm well happy with the tablets performance and features. Although I wouldn't say no to some ICS Android 4.0 love
I have to add myself to this list...with Netflix working (the pixilation only lasts for about 20 seconds, then the picture is crystal clear) and ad-hoc wifi working, and copy and paste working in Polaris....
I'm not rooted for the first time since owning it!...
Well tunneling over ssh if you are on a hotspot does afaik not work if you don't root the device.
+ You can't set any network routes. Or use a http proxy for applications.

I agree, my TF is not rooted, and loving the Transformer more than ever.
It runs really smoothly now, homescreen transitions are perfect, the stock browser
is amazing, it hasn't crashed in weeks and its blisteringly quick. It becomes more and
more useful every day with some fantastic apps being developed for honeycomb now.
Even with a bit of battery drain on my B40 dock I'm really pleased with my Tablet.
Well done Asus
Right now the only thing that bothers me is not being able to open CBRs in file manager or over network like I can with video and mp3s.
its annoying to have such a high sensitivity touchpad...I have accidently overwritten already written notes in many application like Evernote etc many time, none of them have an undo option so i cant remediate. rooting will not help me on this one unless someone comes up with a hack to reduce the sensitivity.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Still needs better proxy handling. No Authenticated proxies (hit and miss with http)... Only way I can see to do this is with apps like proxy droid that require root. This will be the biggie for corporate and some school adoption (not only transformer missing this, android in general).
Almost perfect but the default browser still sucks, still getting the block while scrolling. I dont think Asus will ever fix the lag on the browser.

Should include the stock browser in criticism as it's not an Asus developed item

I am also very happy with the stock image. Unless there is some killer app out there that needs rooting, I do not envision rooting this device.
BTW, talk about browser lag. The text box froze for 20 seconds while entering the last part of the sentence above. This was in FF 6.0 on my quad core Windows 7 system with 16 GB of memory. The activity bar at the bottom shows that as you type the services on the sites "ad.., yieldmanager.com, ..." are being accessed. Perhaps the messages are being scanned as entered for ad keywords to serve up to you.

What ad blocker are you using on the TF?
The firmware is coming right along and getting Netflix is a big help. Unfortunately the lackluster build quality makes me pretty unhappy, and that's not something that can be fixed with a firmware update. I'm a little bummed right now because after having to exchange the dock for the battery drain power, I had to RMA the tablet today because of a power button that no longer works. Considering that I don't use this tablet very much (maybe for an hour a week tops) this seems like a lot of breakage for a brand new item. I really wish they had charged more for these tablets and spent the money on higher quality materials.
I have to say for the first couple of weeks I had a HUGE issue with the touchpad while typing. But in the end it would be what I would call an issue between the chair and the computer... Turn the touchpad off while typing! I email and type a lot and with it in the way during that time it was killing me. We have touch screen dammit!!!!!
Love this device...

New to Tab, reccomendations?

Hi All,
I've had a few Android phones now (HTC Desire/Sensation) and just got myself the Tab 10.1 for Christmas.
Obviously experienced a degree of disappointment that it doesn't do any of the phone functions, though from reading on here there are a few ways of making that work, but from my understanding things aren't yet 100% there yet - would that be an accurate summation of the current state of play?
Seems strange that it does SMS, and yet not voice calls! I think Samsung has missed a trick here TBH.
I'm umming over rooting the device and replacing the current firmware, though with so much choice out there I'm not sure what to go with, so could do with a bit of advice on that front.
I've just bought (and arrived today) the desk dock, which is nice and handy for overnight charging by the bed.
My primary use of the Tab will be for Kindle reading and game/music playing when unwinding in bed on an evening. Though I hope to expand the use to some on-site stuff now I've loaded it up with all the manuals for the various devices I work on!
My only real annoyances currently with the device stem mainly from the email app making notification noises when it shouldn't (and not noticing that the email is no-longer "new" and has indeed been moved to a different folder & marked read by my exchange server/outlook client), this being despite the notification sounds being turned off, and the same for when it gets to 100% charged making a loud chirping noise!
How in gods name do I turn these noises off? Mind you, I am thankful that Samsung didn't include a nice, bright, led to tell you that it's on charge. Those really get on my tits at night!
So, in conclusion, should I root and chuck a custom rom on? Or am I better off hanging in there for ICS?
Any advice & help would be appreciated!

To answer your last two questions. root and custom rom for sure.
I am running the ICS KANG...OMG if it was a woman my wife would be gone.
As far as not having phone capability. What carrier do you have it on? I bought a wifi version so that isn't a big deal to me, since I could probably do wifi calling if I really wanted too.
'ey Cyberprog,
You should be able to make phone calls on it with a voice app such as Skype. I've been using Skype for many years, I can vouch for it's reliability. I don't have a Gal. tab. yet, but I think I'm pulling the trigger this weekend and I went to Skype's website, they have a version for android. Skype costs me a little over $4 per month to make and receive unlimited phone calls to cell phones and landlines in the US. I think I can call Canada and Puerto Rico too but I don't know anyone there.
There's other voice apps, maybe even free ones, maybe Google has one? Anyway, I'd been researching a way to make phone calls from the verizon 4G version Gal Tab, and it doesn't do it, unless maybe you're an uberhacker.
I'd recommend rooting and using Task's rom, much smoother and easier on the eyes with b00steds themes!

Its always worth rooting a device, even if its just to use things like titanium backup.
Tasks ROM would be a great 1st choice as it mostly fixes or enables things that should have been done by samsung to start with (such as USB charging, hardware accelerated launcher, dualband wifi)
Hi All,
The SIM in the unit at the moment isn't paid for by me luckily, but I did use it to receive calls from the client who was paying for it. It's a Vodafone sim btw, and I don't use Skype or Google Voice, it's GSM calls that I wanted to be able to use it with, and my Plantronics headset.
I think rooting has to be the way forward, and as someone said, the usb charging is just stupid, why they ever disabled that I don't know...
Time, I think, to have a look at this "Tasks" rom, and see what it has to offer!
edit: Bother, found the thread for Tasks rom, but it's wifi only and mine's a 3g version

True, backups are real handy, but i find i use the nandroid backups more than titanium, handy feature of the cmw recovery!
Voodoo screentune is a must too when rooted, say goodbye to oversarurated colors!
By the way, i use task's rom on a 3g device, works flawlessly but you loose 3g connectivity.... for me not a must, but for you i guess it is.

Yep, 3g is a must sadly, the whole point of the device is to allow me to work while out in the field during the summer, as well as being something to use when at home in bed! No 3g would put a severe crimp on that.
My opinion?
Stay on your stock rom. Use ADW Launcher EX instead of the stock TW Launcher, and wait for ICS.
Why? Other then the extra options in Tasks10 i did not notice any speed improvement over my stock+adw setup (even not when OC'd to 1.4Ghz).
Don't get me wrong here, im not saying that its not faster then stock, just that with my setup (only 1 home screen) i coudnt notice the diff.
As for Titanium Backup..If you dont switch roms, there's no real need to backup your apps since you not gonna lose them anyways.
A better option in my own experience is to flash CWM recovery and make a Nandroid backup wich backsup your whole tablet and not only the apps. In case something goes wrong (woudnt know why) you still have a exact copy of your tab (homescreen settings/widgets ert included).
Just my 2 cent's.
I'm flashing mine to CM9 as we speak, I'll report back in a bit!
Preliminary thoughts: I'd flash while you wait and then update, it seems really smooth and fluid..
Fixed the annoying charging noise by a timed mute app. Still lights up when it reaches 100% but no longer wakes me up...
