How to Dump OTA Update - Epic 4G General

Instructions per Zanderman112

Basically, when it downloads, it goes to either /sdcard/cache or /cache. I cant remember exactly. Then, you copy and paste that zip file to a PC, and upload to the internet. I still have my EB13toEC05 zip on my sdcard, cause I copied before installing. lol

FIRSTIES!!!

When we get the ota, we'll get there. For now just leave it.

What's the secret? Why not have instructions written down for anyone to use?

The problem with that is that is that it downloads the OTA to cache, and removes it when the install reboots. I found a thread for another phone that doesnt make much sense, seeing as how rooted phones don't get OTA's pushed to them... anyways its over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041572

doesn't much matter since our devs already have a system dump of it

yeah, except if you actually catch the update zip before it installs I think you can get the modem and stuff... i think, maybe... :-/

Won't you get the update but it will refuse to install if you rooted?

We've caught ota's before, it'll be just as easy now.
(we dont have the ota yet)

I've been trying to update since yesterday. I used to get a there's no update message, now I get an error message.

There is a better way which is to get the download link from logcat directly to googles server. That way everyone else can download it from the "legit" host rather than take your chance with 3rd party file hosts and potential for corrupt files. Yes you can use md5 to verify, but getting the zip straight from the source is best.
To the op, this info is not a secret, do some searches, it has been posted numerous times for each of the prior ota's of this phone and many others.

Except for ec05 to ei22. The unknown is the 20428846d0d6 code at front of the file. We can guess the rest.

Screenshots of update. Keep your phone charged, update will be postponed

So I got a notification in the bar stating "Connecting to DM server". About 30 min later, another message stating "Update Available". Well, my battery is about 25%, so it postponed the update. Good thing though, it says to click the "Software Update" in the System Settings when the battery is charged.
See screenshots below.
My friends phone the same issue
My friend has the same issue. So I'm charging it for him. Going to run a log on his phone once we can upgrade it and see if we can get some nice information like a URL and such.

I love how it says Congradulations! like you just won the update lottery.
So where would this update file be located? I have Dalvik Debug Monitor running. The only folder that has a change date of today is the "Data" folder. I cannot access anything in it though.
I haven't installed the update yet, if someone tell me the steps to get the files you need, i could help out

I can not find the update.zip file. The only thing I see is a downloadfile.apk in there. I think it downloaded this file first, then restarted the phone into an installation mode. Well there it did the rest as in downloading the zip file. When going back trying to find it, it is gone. Not sure what else to do. I uploaded to files of the log if there is any smarter people than me that can interpret it.

[Q] DK28 - Update.Zip file

Okay quick question.
As some may know, my phone is bricked (and with it, DK28)
So what I'm saying is, I no longer have the update.zip file to go to DK28 for when I get my new Epic, and I'm a little weary of doing it the Odin way (well, Heimdall for mac).
Also, the server for the update from google is not there anymore.
So, does anyone possibly have this file on their phone/computer that they could lend to me?
Thanks!
Yup, I still had it. Here I uploaded it for you: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QFSYXX6Z

@Formula84 Its better for not. We check download stats how lower the downloads no new files comming.
Attached is ODIN 1.85 and instructions thanks to crawrj for the files.
Code:
IMPORTANT: Make sure you have installed the proper XP or Win7 drivers before starting. Also, remove the SD card from the phone (this may not be necessary, but having the SD card installed has caused Odin to fail for a number of people, so might as well just do it).
1. Extract the contents of the zip file to a folder
2. Open odin
3. Put your phone in download mode (Shut it off, wait for lights to all go out, then hold 1 on the keyboard while powering up)
4. connect phone (you should see odin put a Com4 or something like that in the first box. The actual number is NOT important what is important is something popped up there when you connected your device, meaning ODIN can see it)
5. The only box that should be checked is Auto Reboot.
6. You do not need to choose a pit file.
7. In the PDA Section choose the tar file. (Should be the sph-d700-****-8Gb-REL.tar)
8. Hit start. It will do its thing.
9. If it fails than try a new cable.
10. If the phone hangs for any reason take the battery and sdcard out and let it sit for an hour. Put it back together and try again.

Flashing now. Ill report back in a little while. You might want to add to the op that the tar needs to be extracted twice. once to get it out of the folder and once again when you have it on the desktop. If you notice once its extracted the first time it has a .7z extension on the end of it.
You MUST odin this in the PDA slot. It kept hanging at FactoryFS when using Phone slot.

By having mirror we will not be giving them a true number of following users of their release.
Hotfile is fast and the wait is 15 sec.
Maybe if you are going to this you can keep track of the downloads for the next couple days and give them feedback via twitter.

I don't think the bandwidth is limited, only the amount of storage you can use. I've only added about 200 MB of storage so far, and I've had numerous downloads. Still says I have 4.8 GBs left.
As for bugs. INstalled GPS Status right off the bat and was only getting 2-3 sats locked. Did the cleared the modem memory http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226074 when I flashed CWM in Odin and now I'm getting 5 sats.

I posted in the thread in the General forum but I'll repost here, in case devs don't go there. I have the update and I haven't installed it yet. The phone says that it has been downloaded and verified. If I can get something off the phone in this state that can help the devs let me know. I'm thinking the phone downloaded a file that I could copy and post or something. I just don't know where to look for it. It says the update is 87.8M

Darn it! I wish I knew where they downloaded the update too.
Try doing this from a terminal emulator window or adb:
Code:
find / -name *.zip
and see if you see a zip named PB31IMG.zip
Thanks Todd. I appreciate you doing this. I didn't see your post in the general cause I rarely go there.

Found this in the desire forum. Would this work for the incredible as well?
The OTA .zip files which are downloaded from a Google server are not signed the same way as the RUU "rom.zip" files - they use the app .apk manifest signing method. (manifests and certs a la "jarsigner").
If you are interested in looking at the process that HTC/Verizon uses for the OTA updates, you can get the URL for the OTA zip the following way:
Run logcat on the pc and accept the update on the phone
$ adb logcat > logcat_accept.txt
This will sit like this (it continues to log output into the output file) until the phone reboots. At that point, the adb logcat job will terminate, and the name of the zip file will be indicated in the logfile in a message similar to:
W/SystemUpdateHelper( 64): !!! REBOOTING TO INSTALL /cache/desirec-ota-104882.7b1e5cca.zip !!!
Then, take the name of the file and paste it on the end of android.clients.google.com/updates/partner

Pardon my ignorance, but what *is* this 6.3MB file? Obviously it's an OTA zip file, but it's quite small.. this lone file updates the stock 2.2 ROM to 2.3.4?

anyone get NMl64c update yet? * EDIT -It's out!

I keep getting told by support that the latest build is NMl64c. I still have not got it. * Edit- It's Out!
Didn't even know there was a new build yet. Assume it contains Sept security patches at a minimum? I've checked for updates today and haven't gotten anything... but maybe the new phones are shipping with this update already?
Nothing here yet, but I'm keeping fingers crossed. I'm really beginning to like this phone, shortcomings and all. When I pick up my Pixel XL now, it feels like a boat compared to the PH-1. I'm hoping that updates will help put this phone in the upper echelon.
I've had one PH-1 since Friday of last week and no update... Received another this morning and it's on the same build... So new phones aren't shipping with it I'd say
If only the camera wasn't so terrible... It'd be a perfect phone then... Imho

I guess I'm keeping the PH-1 as I now have no other phone.

I don't own essential, that is why i need someone to pull me some files from it. I mean, when i go unrooted on my htc m9 - both the fx file explorer & adb pull works for /system dumping (some folders might be not extractable with file explorer, but adb works pretty fine)
