hope it's not delayed too long (or at all). google should have been working with them all along to get ics out there and now they're going to pull this crap at the last minute? i'm fairly sure most of us would rather it release with honeycomb sooner and deal with an update later. we'll see what happens on the 9th.
If it still hit christmas, I think it's the smartest move to make.
First reviews are critical for a product commercial succes and releasing the Prime with Honeycomb instead of the more polished ICS could really hurts it. Even if it's updated 2 week after, demonstration products in store will likely stay with honeycomb for a while making it just a prettier and maybe smoother version of every other tablet already on the market.
Asus wants to make this right, Google wants to make this right, if they do, we ll have the Nexus Prime we were waiting for, except it won't be a phone.
Well, a release date wasn't even set yet so in that way it isn't delayed either... But I rather have it they just release it and update it quickly then wait with release.
I can imagine the same goes for asus, earlier release means more sales (simply because of specs) regardless of ICS. As long as they are the first to get it on their tablet they should be fine. It's not as if they loose sales to other ICS tablets when they release it sooner.
@kokusho: And now reading your comment... that's fair enough and true indeed.
I guess it's a good decision. No one apart from Asus has said a word about a quad-core or ICS (only updates to available models). With this move, Asus will be the first to release a quad-core tablet or an ICS one.. and it's doing both at the same time!! This will have some great atention from the media, and I'm sure asus will benefit agains others from that.
Yeah, I agree this was probably the best move for both Google and ASUS, but now I will probably have issues getting one. I'm in the States for another week or so before going back to Germany, and if the Jan 6 EU date is true then my Christmas has been ruined

why would it be the best move? you are expecting it to be developed/tested/released within a month on the Prime. It is going to be glitches galore and then they are going to have to do another patch for ICS. By that time, people will be upset that they got such a bad experience with ICS that they will jump ship.
Ship with what you know works (honeycomb) then do a later upgrade to ICS. its the hardware that people wants and a decently stable software. People don't complain about "upgrades" but people will complain about "delays".

True, but with Google working so closely with ASUS, maybe they'll get it done well enough for a stable release. And ultimately, I'm happy to see the Prime become the marquee ICS tablet.
Assuming this report is true, of course.

It's no secret that samsung has been google's star all this time. I've been saying that's a mistake since the beginning. Looks like google has finally realized this was a huge mistake for ignoring asus all this time.
It's not just google that's been ignoring the asus transformer. Mainstream media rarely mentions it as well. As a matter of fact, even though the transformer sold a lot better than the galaxy tab 10.1, the transformer made it to the list of tablets that should have died along with the HP touchpad and the galaxy tab didn't get on that list. The tech media bias against the transformer is astounding.

I tend to agree with this. This move could actually backfire for Asus. The current state of HC isn't all that different from ICS, from a GUI / basic functionality standpoint, and certainly isn't going to be a major differentiator to the avg. Joe. Give John Doe a Prime w/ HC and a Prime w/ ICS and he isn't going to notice much of a difference in average use. It's only the tech heads who are going to gush over the OS upgrade.
Trying to hammer out an ICS build and load it onto the Prime just before launch does smell like a potential disaster. New versions of any OS always come w/ a punchlist of bugs, some of which might turn people away. I think Asus should have gone the conservative route in this case.

What is wrong about teaming up with Google to finish a final build of ICS for the launch of the Transformer? It isn't like ASUS is taking the source and doing what they want with it, Google is actually sending their own engineers and developers in to ASUS to help work out the bugs or any issues. If anything, this means Asus and Google are serious about making all 4.0 devices the best they can be.
However, this is a Digitimes article and I take it with a grain of salt. Everyone else should, too. They have been wrong many many times.

The tech media, IMHO, is composed almost entirely of ifanboys. They like to focus on android tablets that are a disaster, like the moto xoom. It was a tablet that was almost twice the weight, twice the thickness, and twice the price as the ipad 2, and tech media loved to bring it up over and over.
The galaxy tab 10.1 looks almost identical as the ipad2, and the tech media loves to bring it up as an example of a copycat of the ipad 2.
On the other hand, the transformer is an original product. It's the only tablet out there that has the potential to be productive as well as fun and games. Sales wise, it's doing far better than all the other android tablets. And there is no other company that rolls out this many updates in such a short time that responds to people's needs.
Remember the dock battery drain when it first came out? Asus very quickly came up with a fix and even offered to change out the chipset for free. Every subsequent update has been a direct response to people's complaints and criticisms. I really can't think of any other company that is this responsive to user experience and this supportive after they made the sale.
And yet tech media tend to ignore this technological marvel.
Either the tech media man up and admit they are largely ifanboys or give the asus transformer a fair chance.

there isn't anything wrong with teaming up with google to get this done. that to me is a positive. the negative is that they are forcing these people to get it done in a month, test it out and then load it in ALL the TF2s for shipping. that is such a short time frame that people are bound to make mistakes. you rush development on something as important as the OS, you are looking for trouble. you end up with patches after patches of fixes and by that time people get frustrated. They do not need to rush the ICS release. They can release the TF2 with honeycomb and then upgrade to ICS when they are ready..perhaps early next year.
but i guess we'll see what they say tomorrow.
As I think more about it, what amazes me the most is that we're taking a Digitimes rumor this seriously.
I wouldn't think of this as a false rumor. Think about it! The TF2 is the only quad-core Android tablet with a release date of 2011. Asus did an excellent job with their first Android device by supporting it FAR better than any other OEM as well.
Google needs a flagship ICS tablet on its release and the Prime is the only Quad core tablet available. Even if Google hates Asus, they have to choose them.

Still a rumor. Besides Nov. 9 was never the release date just an official product launch event. I always suspected it would be late Nov. early Dec. release.

Right. In another thread, someone said that the release date is being pushed back. However, what we really have is a rumor about a change to a rumored release date...
we'll know in less than 24 hrs! speaking of which, when is the "launch" conference and where is it going to be?
no one knows/cares

Just wanted to say - I got my Xoom, and yes, I do see some freezes and weird behavior every once in a while.
It doesn't bother me though.
We're all early adopters helping to push Honeycomb forward. Since Xoom is the only tablet atm that uses honeycomb, and it's a pure "Google Experience Device", I'm sure we'll have updates from ElGoog soon and often. Plus, this device is a heaven for developmental though and experimentation, so I'm sure we'll see great things from our local genuises at XDA.
So everyone chill and enjoy a rare opportunity to be there when it all starts =)

I have had mine since the doors opened at Costco here in South Florida and I have not had one freeze or force close. I think people may be loading up apps that are not designed for Honeycomb causing issues. For the most part, I am sticking to Honeycomb apps only with a few exceptions. I am also not loading alternate launchers like ADW. I suspect loading things like this will cause problems.

I read a post yesterday, I can't remember by who, saying that this "Early Adopter" argument is invalid. I believe it was because it would be easy for all tech-companies to take advantage of this and release crappy products that they know consumers will eat up and look past the issues because they know they are "early adopters". As much as I don't like to repeatedly mention Apple, it doesn't seem that they release products riddled with bugs and expect their consumers to shrug it off and say "Oh yea, we're just early adopters, these bugs don't matter!".
Nothing can be perfect obviously, but things can be more perfect than others. Why release something so unfinished when you can release it later in a more complete state? I don't have a Xoom yet, but it seems that Honeycomb was rushed out the door much too quickly. Did Google do this to beat the iPad 2 in the market race? We all know it will still easily sale millions.. they could've waited.
Apple doesn't release products before they are ready? Really? Have you used an iPhone 4 and tried to make a phone call? Did you used an Ipad when it first came out? It had no software for it. Once competition comes and millions of people buy android tablets, the developers will come.
While I agree I would of prefered and more polished Honeycomb, there are ALWAYS growing pains with new technology...especially with brand a new OS. My xoom, like wine, will only get better with age.
Just give it time. It isn't a half assed product....it just needs some software updates. Lets all be happy that soon the mod community is going to do things with it that won't be possible with other devices.

i am using my bt keyboard on the xoom. honeycomb is quite e finished product in terms of its normal use. ive not had one freeze or rrreboot. i had one force close becasue i tried to run a rdp/vnc app. it force closed and i move to next app which did work for controlling my pc. you have people on here either talking without owning the product or loading things not designed or updated for this hardware OR software. such as flashlight apps, launchers, etc. ive used all the apps designed for tablets in the market and ive had no issues. ive played the couple of free games (which performed quite well) and used things as simple as the weather app. smooth sailing. i WOULD like to see more apps (like dish networks sling app) but thats not moto or googles fault.
the bugs ive read about in most topics dont happen to me. im gonna be testing the 720 rip playback later as i havent moved much media to mine yet.

The iPhone4 was a design decision. Had they waited 3 more months it still would have had that same problem.
The iPad had over a thousand third party apps at launch, what are you talking about?
And Android isn't going to compete in the tablet world by releasing beta tablets with buggy software. A normal user would have returned the Xoom after seeing 7 apps at launch, no flash at launch, non functional SD card slot, buggy OS and apps force closing. If normal users see this as their first impression of a Google tablet, that will stick with them for a while. The "early adopter" nonsense is absolutely the worst argument that anyone could make.

I had two freezes while playing cordy. There was an update for it yesterday that seems to have fixed it. Other than that I have not had any stability issues, just some minor graphical issues.
As far as Apple stability goes am I the only one old enough to remember the axiom "never buy a first Gen apple product."? Apple is somewhat notorious for problems with first Gen products.

It has its problems, software problems, I love it it and didnt want to wait a day longer. They know what they're doing, google isn't Microsoft lol. You have no right to speculate on why they should or should not have released it like this, only the right to not buy or use it

sorry but a user has every right to gripe about the limitations of the product they purchased.
Google has a history of releasing buggy products, and improving them over time. its just how they do it. (a la google tv, nexus one launch, etc) does that make them a bad company? no. but to a mainstream (non techie) user who uses the product as is, the xoom out of the box is somewhat of a disappointment because of some basic feature limitations at launch. (no software sd support, no flash support, lack of proper video encoding support, which is a surprise as Google is normally great with cross compatibility). I personally feel that the Xoom launch was rushed in order to get as many early adopter sales before the iPad2 hits. I'm verrry sure that had the xoom been released the same time as iPad2 launch date, xoom sales numbers would be much lower.
i was an avid iPad user (gave it away), and currently awaiting for the xoom to arrive in the mail. i'm looking forward to using it.
What you are totally missing is the fact that the majority of apps look and work just fine. None of this "2x" bull crap that apple did with there tablet launch. I ask, did you purchase an Ipad when it first came out? Do you own a Xoom? If no to one or both counts, you lose some credibility with your argument.
No one is giving Motorola or Google a pass, but there is some kind of understanding with new gear. That is not an excuse, but something to take into account. I personally love xoom, both for what is and what it can and will be. You want a completely bug free and flawless piece of equipment, make it yourself. If you have ever ran your own company, you would know that every prouduct and system goes through some level of growing pains.
Too many people think the xoom is supposed to magically outsell the I pad...which will never happen. Apple, if nothing else has done an AMAZING job at marketing and creating demand for their sometimes sub par, at least technologcally, products. That being said, android is picking up steam and offering a solid competition to the ios system. Does it still have a ways to go...sure. But it is heading that way and things are only going to get better from here.

You just contradicted yourself, you said
1. They have the right to complain about the product being released too early
2. Google has a history of releasing buggy products

They have no right to complain, they knew in advance or they don't possess the ability to think
Also, you can just return it.... but no *****ing about the obvious is a better idea
Well, the no software argument is pointless, you'll have to wait here. Phone Android didn't start with that much apps either, same for iPhone, Windows, any OS.
According to Acer ANZ's Facebook page, the a500 is now scheduled to get the ICS update by April 2012 as opposed to the former January expectation.
I suppose this is better than not getting it at all
Hopefully, someone will have a fully functioning build sooner than Acer does!
The Facebook page is here: http://www.facebook.com/AcerANZ
Also, attached a picture of the comment.
I'm guessing ANZ stands for Australia-New Zealand? If so, then the same applies for India too.
If you look again, ACER ANZ have removed their comment. This can only mean 1 thing; that they were wrong/didn't know the actual date.
It will come when it comes. At least Acer is a lot faster than Samsung when it comes to software updates, especially to its "lesser known" devices........
If you are dying to get ICS there is a ROM for it over at tegra owners. Almost everything is working except for the camera. You do so at your own risk though.

Well, I don't know about it only meaning that.. Maybe the guy's boss found out that he spilled the beans and demanded he take it down...
Anyway, we all hope he was full of it and Acer Poland was right with January. But like I said, better April than never.

January would be good,Feb. Is OK, April is along way off. I just hope we get it.Just got a survey from Acerasking how I liked A500, responded that they should make sure that an OTA update to ICS comes soon, said that alot of people on xda developers and other Acer and android sites expect it and will be pi**ed with Acer if it doesn't come soon.I know this would be my last Acer product if it does not happen.
Wayne
Actually, let me clear up some of the confusion. The February-April ICS date mentioned was ICS estimated release for ACER's new hardware. For example, if you buy an a200 they will tell you to look for ICS starting in February as an OTA.
Again, everyone needs to watch actually what ACER is actually saying. Because they are releasing new hardware (really nice what I saw at CES) with HC, it is nuking up the waters. I stood there at CES and watched a person come up and ask 'when we getting ICS?' and they replied starting in Feb. But, when I asked the salesman, are you saying we're getting ICS on the a500, starting in Feb? The sales person said, no. That this was for these new tablets they're releasing now with HC. But, the person asking had already walked away assuming they were talking about all tablets with HC.
So a lot of people are taking this as ACER saying older equipment will also be getting the ICS OTA. This is not clear, nor has it been clear when we've talked to ACER directly. It really depends on which way the wind blows. They told the 'suits' here that it wasn't then was, and then it wasn't. So, maybe you have to drink more to understand it <lol>.
So, if you want ICS then load a custom ROM that already has it. You can always flash back if and when they release it.
TD
If it takes Acer until April to get ICS to the A500, I'll be buying anything BUT an Acer that is out with Teg3 and ICS.
Scr3w that!

Yeah... hoping I didn't get screwed over for the second time; once by motorola and now soon* by acer. I still believe in you acer!

Dont forget that the a500 didnt ship with a locked bootloader, that was patched in. No guarantee that the teg3 devices will stay unocked.
On another note, are the new acer tablets the same as these, but with teg3? I ask because the only reason I dont run ICS now is because I need the camera. If it isnt figured out by then (it seems more devices are getting it running now) could the camera stuff be taken from the a200or whatever?

You know you're right with the locked bootloader, but I was thinking of a vendor that has a policy not to lock it.
The camera is not the only issue we've had with hardware drivers on ICS. It will depend on what hardware you really need supported and/or matters to you. Some of the tablets at CES with ICS crashed or parts didn't work in some of the demos. No real big issues because they are not yet ready. The vendors that have been working on ICS for a while seem to very stable.

The a 200 does not have a rear facing cam. the a 510 I am not sure. Both have a teg 2 so not much of a upgrade from the a 500. The a 700 I am not sure of because it is still so new.

The next Asus one with the higher screen Res looked nice, but Asus support is worse than Acer's, which really isn't saying much these days.

My current ASUS I like (transformer). I liked the Toshiba Thrive better right up to the last OTA which is when they locked the boot loader (removed fastboot actually).
Samsung Galaxy 10 I have is pretty good too. I'm just sick of fighting locked devices then we find an exploit then they patch it. PUKE. I'm really thinking Windows 8 might be a better solution.

Isn't the rear camera not supported on ICS because no drivers and the one they put on the NEW A200 does? Why only the front, not sure?
Some of the hardware devices that we use on the a500 have no ICS drivers at all and non-planned (official from ACER). However we were assured that on their new line they would have all the hardware drivers for what we need. However, we have to purchase new devices. Reminds me of upgrading Windows just to find out you need to buy a new printer, or the time I had to purchase a new scanner because there were no drivers for my win98 fax/scanner when I went to XP.
So for us, ICS isn't even an option because lack of device drivers on the a500, unless that changes. But for most, maybe it won't matter. But, can you imagine waking up to find ICS downloaded on your a500 and your keyboard doesn't work? Or your mobile card? How about your blood pressure monitor, or diabetes tester? With a locked bootloader how you going fix that, and if you roll back, OTA's still keep a coming unless you can root it.
A mad house I tell you, a mad house. Sometimes I think they think we're trainable monkey's. Take your dirty stinky locked bootloader off my tablet you dang dirty ACER update.
TD
I also think I am done with acer for two reasons. Updates get postponed each and every time and that not very fair for their customers... Maybe they should hire some more programer or I don't know what..... Also the quality of build is terrible. My volume button broke and when i opened the device I saw it was based on two tiny plastic "legs" that could break anyway by hard use; so be careful with it. On the other hand the hardware it is in general good and no any software problems (with custom rom of course). If any other new device come with full USB port then bye bye acer!!!!!!!
timmyDean said:

Once again, you completely miss the mark. Your lack of reading comprehension is phenomenal or you didn't even read the original post and attachment.
If you read the attachment in the original post, you would see there is absolutely no way to construe it, as even remotely referring, to some future/yet to be released Acer tablets. It was intended for current A500 owners.
IMHO, you really don't have the credibility to "let you clear up some of the confusion". Your "anti ICS upgrade" dogma, is starting to cloud your judgement and apparently your understanding of the English language.
Now, as to why the post was removed, it could be a myriad of things, either "good" or "bad", for those wishing for an upgrade.

You know, I would agree with you if you:
1. You were at CES with us.
2. You were a reseller of ACER tablets like us.
3. You have had reps in your office from ACER like us.
4. You personally wrote software for the ACER that is is sold in over 8 countries like us.
5. You went to the annual ACER meeting like us.
6. You wrote hardware device drivers for ACER, Toshiba, Samsung, ASUS, Lenovo, HP, HTC, . . . .Like we do!
7. You actually owned retails stores in multiple states that sells ACER products like us.
8. That your P&L showed more than 2.3 million on the ACER Cost Center in NET software sales alone like us

Look at the pasting they are taking from their TF101, and prime owners!
I was reading that earlier. TF101 owners trashing them for not getting it, and Prime owners complaining about the bugs. lol
I would like to know who is allowing ASUS's marketing team to post that crap.
LOL. Bad question to be bringing up until after they release updates that fix the Prime and bring the TF101 into the ICS fold (hopefully stable).
That is some of the worst timing I've seen.
i come here once a day and hope to see a thread that says "ICS is RELEASED!".

Two theories:
1.> Samsung hacked ASUS Facebook account and trolled a bunch of users.
2.> Some guy working in ASUS PR Department, ready to quit, on his last day decides to get even because someone stole his stapler.
Must admit I laughed at the irony of them asking us what we like most about it when alot of us don't know anything about it till we get it, I just sat there laughing as I added my own QQ to the end of the thing lol.
In future I think avoid ASUS, according to the aussie website for the TF101 its update-able to ICS and has been listed as that for about 2 months despite it not being true lol.
Was very pissed when I tried to hunter down how to patch it to ICS 2 months ago all because website says it can only to find out some idiot updated the product page months too early.
Wouldn't the ASUS site saying that when its not true be considered false advertising and/or bait and switch because the product you buy isn't update-able like the product info says?
yeh i had to chime in on that one...what a stupid question. But that would be cool if it were a Valentines day release (love) not likely tho they want to fix all the bugs that prime has get it stable and then release them together i bet
I don't trust Facebook/Twitter sources... theyre usually just somebody who does not know a damn about what they are saying.
As someone who waited 4 months for a GB update on my incredible from the first "expected" date... We will see it when we see it.
not that its a solid source - i had a chat with a sony rep regarding the tablet s and he has said that they are expecting ICS on their tablets by the end of Q1....... from his understanding from speaking to reps from Asus the mid February estimate is correct.
Ive spoken to the Asus rep in the past and hes pretty clueless so id never post up anything he tells me......... for example: he didnt know what ICS was - and when asked about the Prime just before it was released he had no idea what i was talking about Goomba
Facepalm for ASUS.
Maybe, just maybe, they will reconsider their approach to product releases and release date announcements. Let's face it, if they'd not released ICS for the prime before it had been properly tested, and if they hadn't promised ICS for TF101 before Christmas then they would have got the positive responses they were probably expecting.
They couldn't delay ICS for the Prime, because everybody was talking about the poor hardware design.
This problem starts earlier, when they rushed the Prime's hardware design to get it out on market first.
If they hadn't rushed the Prime, folks would've been a lot happier. Me included.

That only works for a certain amount of time, though. If you get a reputation for making bad products, people stop buying them altogether. I'm sorry, but taking a feature off the spec sheet because you found out it essentially doesn't work, but you don't want to put an investment into fixing it--and it could be fixed, for sure, the question is the expense--is the definition of making a bad product.
I'm curious, did anybody get a full refund (including sales tax, return shipping costs, etc.) from Asus for their GPS not working? They may have done, which would at least slightly mitigate the issue, but I've not actually seen any reports of that.

People need to stop worrying and asking about when ASUS will release the ICS update.
Its not like they said they will never update it or they have dropped support. And don't forget how often we had updates during honeycomb and how quickly things were patched. More often then other competition devices.
There is a lot of work put into making a working device. The developers on xda itself take a long time before they have anything fully functional. Not to mention trying to troubleshoot the bugs that pop up.
1) Google releases the source code for the operating system. Once its released developers have to comb through the whole source dump to understand whats going on and what has to be done before doing anything. And its not just one developer who has to do this, but the entire team thats working on it. It takes time. (They have a life too so give them a break)
2) Then the most important and the most dificult part is getting the drivers incorporated properly and making sure they are functioning. It might sound easy but its not. Most of the time making something work might break something else (same goes for fixing bugs).
3) Not everything happens in one go. Just like the developers here on xda have alpha and beta releases, so do techs at any company (i.e. AUSU). The builds have to be tested and tested and retested before gettng approval.
4) No company is obliged to give any software updates. And if they are then they can release the update when they feel like it. Even if you abandon or sell this device and buy another android device, it will most likely also be in this same situation.
5) NOT EVERY OWNER OF ASUS TRANSFORMER TF101 IS ON XDA or CARES ABOUT ROOT. There are a mojority of owners that have little to no knowledge regarding rooting, roms, upgrades, or even xda. And most of them dont really care as long as the device is functioning properly. Thus releasing a premature update to the masses will be wrong and very bad for marketing.
6) Remember that a new android os is released almost every 6-7 months. So the whole process has to start all over again. And not to mention that most devices that have gingerbread will be getting their ICS update by the end of 1st quarter or during the 2nd quarter (mostly the information given by the companies are very unreliable and could take longer or the devices might get abandoned). And by the time those devices get ICS updated, there will be another android version ready to be released.
7) IT WILL BE RELEASED WHEN ITS READY. So dont fill the general forum section with threads regarding the release of ICS. The whole first page is filled with it already. (I am sorry that i added this to the list too but seriously people need to calm down a little).
Oh no, another ICS TF101 thread!!!!
shahbaz5588, your post was well reasoned and displayed both logic and common sense, and it's a damn shame that none of it seems to have any place here.

You've missed one small but crucial thing... Asus' devs already released ICS over a month ago, for the Prime. If you seriously believe there's a single significant difference between the two builds beyond drivers, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.
And guess what? Asus doesn't make the drivers... the suppliers do. Those drivers have also been available for almost a month in public for other closely related devices like the Xoom, and will have been available to Asus long before that. You know, back when Asus was working on the TF101 and TF201 updates, simultaneously. (You don't seriously believe they have two separate teams working on near-identical builds in isolation, do you? If so, time to start clearing shelf space for the second bridge I'm selling you... they'll look so CUTE side by side on your mantelpiece.)
Not to mention, Asus' own statements don't add up. It's not just that we've been promised the update in December, January, February, and now March, either. I'm talking basic inconsistencies.
First it was "We're all done, we're just waiting for Google."
Then it was "Actually, we're waiting for our engineers. It's Chinese New Year's fault."
The only consistency is that Asus won't blame themselves. Truth be told, the update is almost certainly complete, to the same level as the Prime build, and was available inside Asus at the same time. It will have finished in-house testing--something Asus doesn't seem to do much of, given basic problems that have slipped by unnoticed in previous public releases-- at exactly the same time as the Prime build did.
Most likely the only reasons we're still waiting a month later are twofold. A little exclusivity for Asus' much-maligned, troubled newer and more expensive hardware, and the fact they then realized they had some fundamental problems in that joint ICS build that were bricking Primes, and would also be bricking TF101s that were still under warranty, and have sold in far greater numbers.
When will we TF101 users get ICS? My guess is, ~2 weeks after TF201 users get an ICS build that doesn't result in a flurry of warranty service. Most likely in mid-late March, as I've said for weeks now...
Sorry, but that's bull**** and excuses.
Large companies like Asus have access to the ICS long before it's made public, they are usually involved in the development process itself along with Google. Many devices like the Transformer (but more likely the Xoom in this case) are used DURING ICS development.
The Tegra2 platform drivers are developed by the hardware manufacturers in conjunction with Google too (again prior to release). In the case of Tegra2 devices, they don't differ too much in design, almost always using the reference design with a few hardware tweaks that have little or no impact on the drivers or OS.
Even the dock has very little low-level OS changes, Android has supported add-on keyboards and touchpads for some time already (HC 3.1 introduced the new mouse pointer).
Most of the dev work to support Asus apps, has already been done for the Prime.
The bottom line, is if Acer and others can already get their ICS out already, so could Asus. However I'm pretty certain it's being held back for commercial reasons, and almost all developers have been diverted to Prime and TF700T development.
Worst of all, is the total silence (aside from woolly non-commital wording), leaving their customers totally in the dark on this. This is the worst aspect of it.
We have had info from various Asus sources saying TF101 would get ICS the same day as Prime, a few weeks after, in Feb, now Feb/March.

Completely agree. All people are doing by saying "just wait, it will be ready when it's ready" is trying to censor mass user anger at ASUS for not being able to produce an operating system that they've had available to them since NOVEMBER (possibly sooner).
Anyone remember the Android Update Alliance? Updates in a reasonable time frame? How does several months after the fact sound? Is that reasonable to you?
The ONLY reason that this is taking so long is so that people will go out and get the Transformer Prime, and ASUS will keep dragging their heels until we, their customers, get pissed off enough at them and start DEMANDING that they release the update, or even a 'leaked' build, like Samsung does.
We SHOULD be getting pissed, we SHOULD be battering their facebook page demanding an update, we SHOULD have tons of threads in the forums demanding ICS from ASUS, so maybe they will realize that and say 'oh ****, maybe we should actually, you know, DO something for our customers'.
First, you've got to get mad.
Sure, demand them and force them to rush the update, now that will work!
With all respect to your opinions, I'd rather wait more and have a good stable, and fully baked 4.0.
Don't get me wrong, I bought the Tf101 with 4.0 in mind, so I'm also craving for it. I used, as my daily rom, 4.0 on my Nexus S when not even wifi was working.
Asus knows what they are doing IMO, and rushing them is gonn make no difference. Just let them do their thing. They will do it, they are the ones driving the company, not us. Its their decisions and preferences.
I'd like to say just one thing: the Acer A500 (the real, direct competitor for our TF101) will get official ICS in April. Get your conclusions.
I think that everyone who screams "omg you promised me jenuary and now you are delaying I want it now!!1!1!revenge&selltheTF101&youdontworkwell&Y U DELAY" sounds like a teen screaming when her parents dont buy to her the dress she wants.

that just shows me how less you know about the "large companies"...
google releases any new android version to the flagship device which will first showcase the new OS.... for example, when google nexus (the first one) was released it was first given to htc to bring out 2.1... and the next google flagship phones made by samsung were first given access to both gingerbread and ICS... google works with the developers of samsung during this time to help bring out the product... no other "large company" has access until the product is released... and the source of the android os is not released until significant flagship devices are sold...
As for the nvidia tegra 2 drivers... they werent updated to work on ICS until last month (google, nvidia, and motorola were working on it together http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371486)... and there has been no news regarding its release since motorola xoom got the ICS update... and for your kind information motorola xoom only got ICS update in USA... the rest of the world has to wait till Q2 of 2012 (https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c)
Yes the tegra 2 devices can be used with a few hardware tweaks from xoom... but "large companies" cant do tweaks and use hacks... they cant use drivers made for a certain device on its own product... the processors could be the same but the boards are different... so the drivers have to be modified to function properly with them...
it sounds all bull**** and excuses bcuz you have no clue
whatever asus has had ics since november regardless and promised and promised and anyone who thinks we are waiting on it for anything other than for asus to sell primes is only kidding themselves its all monetary period!
they are selling primes with ics and blowing off millions of longtime users that arent buying the new shiny device but its stupid because those users next purchase hangs in the balance, i know service and support and this whole ordeal will affect my next purchase, i love asus so i will purchase future products but they are pushin my buttons and the scales could one day be tipped. im hoping they dnt get too stupid cuz i do love their products.
Out of curiosity, how many examples are there of companies giving a general date, and consistently providing on said date?

Hi, I saw some post on ASUS UK and ASUS Northamerica Facebook, that ASUS canceled the ICS on the TF101, because of lack of resources with the ongoing ICS problems on tshe prime.
Can somebody confirm this, or is it just a rumor?

QUOTE:
Samuel Müller So sad, ASUS stopped ICS development for the TF101. Yesterday I called a ASUS Service Centre in the US, after been switched a few times, I got a service technician on the line. On my ICS questions he told me because the trouble with TF Prime they have no resources left for the Original Transformer TF101.
After the ASUS ICS announcement for the TF101 last October, the release was postponed many times and ASUS Singapore told the customers, that the prime and the TF101 get ICS the same day. Then it was postponed again to mid February and again to February/March. ASUS stopped the ICS adjustments for the TF101 in the middle of January. They where not able to handle both transformer, because of lack of resources then they stopped the ICS port for the TF101 completely. This is also the main reason why there was no official statement and confusion all over. Like · Comment · 2 hours ago ·
Colin Willson likes this.
Colin Willson I find this hard to believe, but at the same time it must be true. For Asus to not update an 8 month old product is terrible business. Asus has proven they are a horrible company. If this is true they should be ashamed if they don't release what they have done so far. about an hour ago · Like
Samuel Müller I agree, I was waiting desperately for ICS to install the new Google Chrome, and working VPN to OpenVPN and I wanted to use the camera and the mic with Skype. about an hour ago · Like · 1
Eddy Wolfyzero even if u do say that, and there might be a port to install ICS separately, is not the official and real version they mention, and as far I know in the US, if they don't give us something they did mention on package and online, it's a

I don't think "Samuel Müller" speaks on behalf of Asus and neither does a random service tech.
I won't believe any of this until it's confirmed by Asus themselves in an official way.
Also, I find it highly unlikely that they would cancel ICS. It's supposedly almost done and the backlash would be huge.
Just another guy getting his couple of minutes of internet fame. Moving on ...
I don't think Asus is really that stupid (well, I've learned that there really are stupid people.. but still..) to lose customers over a "lack of resources" ? I'm sure they'd lose more resources in not pushing an upgrade which should be somewhere in their cost-benefit analysis. In any case, let's not forget that Apple is a master at marketing, and that this is a perfect opportunity to strike at one of their competitors.. I'm not saying that these guys work for Apple, but if I were in Apple's company, I'd be telling my marketing team to go run negative publicity on Asus (discreetly, because Apple must be seen as above the rest and therefore does not need to market against people) because this is an awesome opportunity.
This **** better not be true. Its not our fault the Prime is a POS.

it is not true they posted a picture of a tf101g running the other day also stop making ics threads the very first post says not to make enew ics threads
It can be good news too, I can finally sell it without wait to the update.
Asus probably snagged many 1st time Asus customers with the TF101, by having some longer term support for the TF101, it encourages you to try them again in the future when the TF101 is ready for being replaced. Most people own their devices for many years, and are not the gadget obsessed junkies who change device at 6/12 month intervals.
So I am hoping this rumour and speculation is not at all true. Otherwise this is highly likely to be my first and last Asus product.
Come on people I can't believe you guys are falling for this crap. Some joe bloggs posts some crap on the us fb page and you lot take it as fact.
Mods please delete this tosh.
i agree to indie13, dont get panic cause of some posts of some guys.
just wait till next month, then we see what happened with the ics update
I wish they cancel ICS that way I'll sell my TF101 and get a Sammy and never buy a product from ASUS again...
Sony's already blacklisted
just as a little bit of personal experience:
I work in electrical retail and used the retailer numbers to contact Samsung regarding gingerbread for the galaxy tab 7" as it was the same situation for that tablet as it is ours now.
I spoke to a rep and someone from customer care and was told a time frame for the roll out........and to date its still not fully happened or if it ever will. If I.c.s has still not arrived by next Tuesday I will contact them through the same process but keep in mind the gtab scenario.
So the moral of the story is never believe what they tell you.
It's a bullsh#@ , asus south Africa just post a screenshot of t101 running ICS 4.0.3 ,

Good stuff is still worthless if you have no love from the vendor. Mark my words, asus does not care about it's past customers, only seeing them as potential future revenue, that's why the newer, shinier stuff always gets the upgrade, but the older stuff (same general chipset, not that much different), screw those guys, time for them to upgrade. It's the exact same greedy corporate mindset that apple has.
I took a risk buying the Transformer, but now i'm wiser for it. Definately won't be buying ASUS stuff again soon, and my next tablet/phone will probably be a Motorola.
