Flash custom recovery on an already rooted Aria with clockworks recovery?

is it possible to switch to another custom recovery after I already got clockworks?
I tried unrevoked but its stuck in the reboot (I believe its trying to root my aria again)

not sure what youre trying to do.... i believe Clockwork is the only Recovery for rooted phones. if you want to flash a custom ROM, well that is something else altogether. please be specific as to what you want to flash to the phone. include a link to the flash too

To flash a different custom recovery on your Aria, you need to rename the zip file LIBEIMG.ZIP on the SD card and boot in HBOOT (Power on the phone by holding down VOL DOWN and the Power Button). When it boots to the HBOOT screen you should see text stating that it found LIBEIMG.ZIP and is installing it.

I'm curious, what recovery are you talking about?

thanks for including the link. the instructions are clear.... Root IS required, Clockwork recovery is recommended, the Freedom Aria flash appears to be a custom ROM.
once the phone is Rooted, boot into Recovery, make a Nandroid backup, and flash downloaded zip file from SD card.
if you need help Rooting, there is all sorts of good methods available on this site. I use the Unrevoked method myself, but it works best on Linux or Mac OS

hmm I think you are looking at the old method which is a custom rom
The new one is a custom recovery which brings me to the question as I dont think you can flash a custom recovery in the clockwork custom recovery.

its possible im looking at the wrong thing, but far as i can tell it states "Recovery Custom ROM" which is totally different from Custom Recovery ROM

I have similar questions. I was trying to update my version of clockwork also using unrevoked again, but couldn't get it to work. I guess my questions are:
1. Is there any benefit in updating to a newer version of clockwork? My current version is 2.0.x.x and I believe the latest one is 2.5.0.4.
2. Will this same method work to do so? Can I rename the latest clockwork .zip file like this and get it updated?
I thought using the flash clockwork option in ROM Manager would do it, but it doesn't. If I reboot from ROM Manager it goes to the newer version, but if I reboot otherwise it goes to my original. The couple times I've used it, there appears to be maybe some different features/options in the newer one and I feel like I might be missing out on something!

What's the difference with this recovery?

These are probably two different things. once you got the recovery rom flashed you can upgrade it in recovery mode (hence its different from original clockwork recovery)

@brswattt, far as I can tell this is " basically" used for jailbreaking the ps3.

you can use unrEVOked to flash the new recovery. if youre a Windows user, download the unrEVOked tool and run the .exe as Administrator. also make sure there are no conflicting s/w on the PC such as HTC Sync and you have all the drivers installed(HBoot, ADB drivers, etc.)

This still isn't working for me. Everything appears to go well at the start, then I get:
Waiting for root...(safe to restart if this doesn't work)
At which point the only way I can restart is to pull my battery. After doing so, it reboots and I get:
This was a triumph
It is not, however, any such thing. After another minute I get this:
Internal error: couldn't find misc.
So I've still got my original version of clockwork, 2.0.1.3, despite the fact that ROM Manager is telling me I have 2.5.0.1. I'm obviously missing something here.
BTW, if it matters I'm running CM 6.1.0

Although there is a ClockworkMod 2.5.0.4 version, I don't think it is for the Aria. According to ClockworkMod ROM Manager, 2.5.0.1 is the most current one for the Aria so I am believing what ROM Manager is telling me since it is written by the same the vendor.

all no go. I think it has something to do with the phone already been rooted and has clockworks installed which makes unrevoked unhappy

OK, let's start from the beginning. You asked about installing an alternate recovery (PSFreedom recovery), but apparently it has its own installation procedure that needs to be run on an unrooted Aria.
What you need is to find just the PSFreedom recovery and copy it to your SD called in a file called LIBEIMG.ZIP and that is how you need to install it on a root phone that has ClockworkMod. Perhaps you need to go back to the PSFreedom thread and ask if a LIBEIMG.ZIP can be produced that can be flashed from HBOOT to replace ClockworkMod.

I got a recovery.bin which is suppose to be used with unrevoked.

Didn't think so but I tried it anyway. Created the gold card but the RUU failed when it tried to write the hboot.

HTC implemented a new hboot in the latest official 2.2.2 update for the Aria. The new hboot version is 1.0.2.0000. This hboot can not be overwritten by flashing back to the original RUU. The new hboot also fixed the exploit that was used to root the Aria previously.
To date the Aria with the new hboot is un-rootable without hardware.

HTC devices have a security flag that allows the phone's NAND memory to be written to. This is referred to as the S-ON/S-OFF flag. In order for the NAND memory which houses the HBOOT loader and ROM to be written to, the security flag needs to be OFF. The HBOOT loader can control this flag and when an official HTC signed RUU is used, the HBOOT loader will turn the flag OFF and allow the RUU contents to be written to the NAND memory.
Previous versions of the HBOOT had an exploit in it that allowed rooting and installing a custom recovery, i.e. ClockworkMod and this is how custom ROMs were installed. The current HBOOT version no longer has this exploit available via software. The only way a new HBOOT or Recovery module can be written to the Aria is if the security flag is turned OFF and as of now the only way to do that is to use the XTC Clip device.

Well done - nice summary of the situation.
I have rooted the updated Aria with my XTC clip. There is a guy that frequents the IRC channel in my thread who has a cell phone store and an XTC clip. I've coached him through a couple of updated Aria roots and he's competent to do the job. He won't charge much, and whoever wants him to do the work will have to pay a modest fee plus return shipping. All he would need is the device - no case, no batter cover, no battery, no sim, no sdcard, no cables - no box. This makes shipping in a small padded envelope via USPS cheap - even insured.
Anyone interested should stop by the IRC channel in my sig.
OP: please update post #1 so a lot of people don't spin their wheels on that process - it's futile.

After I went through the AlphaRev flashing process, I learned the truth of the previous HBOOT's exploit is that it let you gain temporary NAND unlock.
While it's unlocked and once you got temporary root permission from, for example, the famous RageAgainstTheCage, then you are allowed to put su and SuperUser.apk to your system partition to gain permanent root permission, and flash recovery image to recovery partition as well.
The above is basically how Unrevoked works, imo. As for AlphaRev, it needs your device to be rooted already. It gets temporary NAND unlock first, then flashes and runs a boot image with a NAND module that would add some extra partitions, including HBOOT of course, to the MTD table in order to flash an hacked HBOOT/SPL into your device.
The new 1.x HBOOT has that exploit patched, both Unrevoked and AlphaRev won't work anymore. This thread I found might be the last hope that doesn't involve XTC Clip:

The problem with this solution is it requires an HTC engineering hboot. Here is a thread posted by ATTN1 when the Aria was first released stating that a Liberty eng-hboot doesn't exist:

It's worth to try. I don't think anyone has tried this on Aria before. Previously we just tried to install an old RUU with gold card hoping the hboot would be downgraded, but this is different.
Step 5-6, hboot installs LIBEIMG.zip. We can extract the rom.zip from RUU and rename it.
Step 7-9, DO NOT REBOOT and get into stock recovery. These must be the key if this happens to work.
Step 10, apply update.zip which is a clockworkmod flashable zip.
Again, it's worth to try, as they got this work on stock 2.2.1 espresso with hboot 1.x. We just need to make an MISC.img to let people try.

Created a gold card.
Obtained update.zip(clockwork).
Extracted rom.zip from the original 2.1 RUU.
Downloaded superoneclick v1.9.1.
Put update.zip and rom.zip on the gold card.
Unmounted the goldcard.
Ran superoneclick and got success on shell root.
Used adb shell and poked around.

How do we get around not having the engineering recovery package for the Aria?

I did a little research about the mtd0.img that was mentioned in the referenced thread and found some posts about creating a mtd0.img (misc.img) for the HTC Desire. There is even a web site that lets you input the appropriate values from your phone and it generates one for you. Don't know if it will work on the Aria, but it may be a place to start. Just Google HTC+Desire mtd0.img and you'll find the various posts. That would be the misc.img that ladios mentioned.

I'm unclear on this as I thought the CID was much longer than 8 characters yet the image creator only requires 8.

We can use hex editor to make our own.
Open android-info.txt extracted from the rom.zip you are using
On the line begin with "cidnum: ", there's an 8-character CID number, copy that
On the line begin with "mainver: ", that's the rom version, eg. 1.35.707.5, then 707 would be the rom's region code
Use a hex editor to open mtd0.img extracted from espresso-eng.zip
At 0x0000, overwrite the CID number with the one you found in android-info.txt
At 0x00A0, overwrite the version number with 1.01.XXX.1 where XXX is the region code, eg. 1.01.707.1
Save and use it

To whom who also want to try, please use the files in this post and follow the instructions in How-To [Root] The myTouch 3GS if you updated to Offical 2.2.1 and lost root.
Liberty version of needed files:
(1) Engineering package: liberty-eng.zip is attached.
(4) Stock firmware: Download LIBEIMG_Liberty_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.35.707.5_Radio_47.41.35.10_7.09.35.13_release_138500_signed.zip and rename it to LIBEIMG.zip
(5) ClockworkMod Recovery: Download recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-liberty.zip and rename it to update.zip​

Clockworkmod does not work!!!

I'm really at a stage now where i wanna just throw my htc desire hd at the wall!!!! I am trying to just install a custom firmware, not much to ask considering the mammoth amount of hacking you have to do to even downgrade the firmware. I have done absolutley everything that needs to be done to root this device, i have downgraded the firmware i have rooted it, switched off eng s-off and radio s-off i have full root acess with terminal emulator, i put the update zip on the sd card it says something about installation invalid thats because first time i did not disable radio s-off then it went slightly further but then said some other error i have tried everything, i tried rom manager and selected reboot in recovery mode but now it just makes the phone freeze on the htc boot screen when selecting recovery from the boot menu, can someone please please help, how hard can it be just to install coredroids firmware, why can't it just be as easy as the pd98img firmware

clockworkmod recovery works fine. Something has just gone wrong with your installation.
To avoid complications later on, you haven't "switched off ENG S_OFF" you've made made S-ON S-OFF and added ENG S-OFF.
You talk about update.zip, is this for a ROM (CoreDroid?)? Which ROM? Did it tell you to rename it to update.zip? If a ROM then it had nothing to do with Radio S-OFF as you only need that for flashing radio.img files and if it was a radio you were trying to push you should use fastboot not recovery. Are you using the right version of recovery (it's very specific about the version required)?
When everything has been installed correctly and instructions followed it is VERY easy to install coredroid's ROM.

hi thanks for the reply, i just follwed the instructions for installing a custom rom as it asks u to chang it to s-off but the guide also says you need to install the update.zip for clockworkmod to get to choose the custom flash rom you want to use but all i get when i select update.zip from the recovery menu is e:signature verification failed installation aborted

Have you got ROM Manager installed?
Have you got clockworkmod recovery installed? If so what version is it. If not then use ROM Manager to flash it and flash 2.5.1.3 version (as that what it says).
Get the above. Then let me know.

Sorry, I meant recovery version but it looks like you still need to do that.
In that case push the recovery.img file (grab from the Coredroid thread) using fastboot.
Normally issues are because people miss things but you've confirmed you have ENG S-OFF, Radio S-OFF and root.

its written ok but when i select recovery from bootloader it just hangs on the htc startup screen grrr this is just impossible.

That's not for the desire HD.
Grab a 3.x.x.x version from clockwork 3.0.2.8 thread and try that (you can downgrade easily once we got something working).

[Q] S-off but no root?

First time posting although I've been lurking for quite a while so hopefully I don't get flamed out of here on my first attempt.
I tried posting this under another thread in Q&A but was not getting a response and I'm anxious to try and get to where I could start flashing some ROMs . As far as I know I've done everything correctly but I'm sure I'm missing something. I don't mean to double post this but like I said I'm really anxious to get started.
First I did root my Evo using unrevoked 3, all seemed to go well and correctly as I ended up with S-OFF, superuser app, etc. I created a backup and everything, (still running stock Sense ROM.) Do I need to try using Unrevoked Forever now?
I started reading posts about backing up RSA keys and WiMAX partitions etc and when I connected the phone (yes usb debugging and charge only); opened a command prompt and browsed to the ADB directory I never get the # confirming I have root access. (I only get the $)
Now from what I'm reading Clockwork mod backs up the WiMax anyway but I still wanted to walk through the process to get more familiar with it. I guess my first question is do I really need to back up the partition and keys if I have a successful nandroid backup?
Also I installed root check and the under the basic setting it said I had no root access, and then under the advanced setting it said I did.
I tried installing Ti backup and clicking under problems to install busy box thinking that may be the problem, but I don't see the setting it describes there where I can change to install busybox.
Finally I also downloaded the busybox installer. It gives two options of where to install it in either /system/bin/, or /system/xbin/....does it matter? Will installing it this way be ok or do I need to push through ADB? If I need to push through ADB then obviously I need to get my # root access figured out.

Yes, flash over to the Amon RA recovery. You might need to delete the PC36IMG.zip file after installing so that it will not ask you again to update.
Then you could just download the superuser app from
http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.2-efgh-signed.zip
copy it to the root of your SD card, and then install that from RECOVERY in Hboot menu.

Verified, ran August GB RUU and phone re-rooted

Okay I verified that if you have s-off you will be able to get root back on your phone if you run the RUU.
As expected the RUU did unroot my phone but it didn't touch s-off. So I downloaded CWM 3.0.0.8 from dougpiston.com and changed it to PB31IMG.zip (this has to be a flashable zip file to work) and it loaded from hboot no problem. I then downloaded the latest superuser app using ROM Manager, version 2.3.6.3 efgh, older versions will not work, and just flashed it through recovery. Superuser does not need to be renamed update.zip you can just leave the name as is and select let me choose zip from sdcard and it installs just fine.
Took a while for me to get superuser running again as I had an older version and I could only find the newest version in ROM Manager.

Thanks to you both. I didn't even click on the Download ROM because it's premium and I'm still getting my feet wet with the whole root thing. I'm off to try the GB RUU w/radio and then re-root.

What if you have s-on?

You can only re-root if you have s-off. S-on blocks you from replacing the stock recovery with a custom recovery and blocks the installation of superuser into the system folder.
Eventually the Unrevoked team will come up with a new way to root phones but this most likely won't happen till the OTA actually starts to drop and people report how they lost root. And then who knows how long it will take them to do it. Could be a few days to a few months.

Jeez, can't believe I screwed myself like that. I'm a regular root/flasher, and no idea how to get my fix now..

I ran the RUU with all expectations of not being able to re-root my phone just so I could test if the OTA would change the security settings on my phone. I also still wasn't sure if I could even get root back if it was still s-off so I was willing to experiment with knowing full well what could happen. From past experience with the Eris and losing root for about 3 months you have to flash these leaks with all expectations that it will break your phone and not sweat it too much if it does as eventually someone will find a fix.

You're absolutely right. I have no doubt in my mind someone will come up with a way to root 2.3 on the INC

Alright, I've got s-off, downloaded the superuser 2.3.6.3 efgh app from the ROM manager butttt... now what? I've tried to boot into recovery but I just get an icon of a phone with an exclamation mark inside of a triangle, which I'm assuming isn't good.

Flash clockworkmod recovery first, then the superuser zip.

I tried that but it gives me an error saying: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!".

If you flashed the GB RUU and lost root and/or s-off.
Someone correct me please if I'm wrong but couldn't you download the froyo RUU and load it then root and s-off?

How are you trying to flash it? I'd recommend getting the 3.0.0.7 (AMOLED) or 3.0.0.8 (SLCD) recovery from www.dougpiston.com. Flash in hboot. Or is that how you're doing it?

The Eris had a manual method (race method) for rooting the phone but I could never find one posted for the Inc. It involved having the phone connected to a pc with adb running and then taking out the sdcard and rebooting, at a certain point of the boot process you counted to 4 and then pushed the sdcard back in. If you did it correctly adb was able to connect to the phone and you could slip a custom recovery and su in. It was rather complicated and only a handful of people ever did it correctly myself included and it was eventually replaced by a one-click method. The one-click method still pretty much does the same thing you just don't have to manually remove the sdcard or have the phone connected to a pc. In some ways the Eris has a lot more support from its community than the Inc does probably because it was Verizons first android phone.

I second this it has to be a flashable version (contains android-info text file + the recovery image) to work. I used the 3.0.0.8 file from doug pistons website which is already to go just needs to be renamed PB31IMG.zip and make sure it isn't being named PB31IMG.zip.zip as file extensions can be hidden especially if you are renaming it on a pc. I downloaded it directly to my phone and renamed it there so the extension wasn't hidden.

I beleive that is becasue you stil have the stock recovery? Did you flash the clockwork recovery from dougpiston.com?

I flashed the clockwork mod recovery 3.0.0.7 from dougpiston via hboot.
I tried several different ways to boot into recovery to flash the superuser app but it isn't working. When I try to do it from the clockword mod app it says the same error: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!".
I tried to manually download the superuser .zip and boot into recovery from the hboot menu, but it still gave me that same phone icon with the exclamation mark and triangle and then nothing.

First thing are you getting into recovery from the hboot menu? And you can't get into recovery from ROM Manager because you need superuser installed to do it that way. It still sounds to me like you don't have ClockworkMod Recovery installed. Maybe only version 3.0.0.8 works I'm not sure but that version is for both amoled and SLCD screens. So either try reflashing your copy of 3.0.0.7 or try flashing 3.0.0.8. I do think I had to flash the recovery a couple times to get it to stick.
