A Homeless Guy in the Park says I should keep Froyo - Droid Incredible General

He said Froyo is a great version.
I just bought a used Incredible, and I know that many people now have Gingerbread.
Do I have to do anything special to keep Froyo? Are there any kind of automatic or OTA upgrades I need to block?
This is my first droid.

I think the gingerbread update got pulled. So you are probably safe there

You really should not talk to homeless guys in the park, even if their named Einstein.
Moving to gingerbread was best thing I have done since i moved out of the park and got a house not built out of cardboard.

There are a few reasons I miss froyo, but on the whole gingerbread is superior.
For one, tasker never really worked the same after gingerbread. Google changed how apps could interact with the system rendering some of my secret agent-y profiles useless. I also had a phone finder profile that will no longer work as well.
Then there's the navigation-music volume issue. I've not had this issue since I switched to using Google music, but almost all third party music apps would not play nice with navigation volume.
Aside from those two issues, gingerbread is better.

If a ota update message pops up just cancel or decline it and you can keep froyo forever. If your phone is rooted you can dissable the update check by editing the build.prop file in /system.

in a lot of ways froyo is better, but as a whole development has moved on to gingerbread. So you will typically end up with better ROM's and overall performance from upgrading.
Not to mention that froyo has a couple security leaks that were patched in gingerbread. Nothing major or to be concerned about, but it is out there.

I love it that a homeless guy gave you smartphone advice I'm running a Gingerbread rom with some sense 2.1 mixed in and it runs amazingly well.

Don't take advice from a homeless man unless you need to know which bridge is the safest to sleep under.
GB > Froyo.

You would think the patched security flaws would be enough to upgrade, not to mention the performance upgrade. I guess for some people that's not enough, hell my one buddy is still running an old ass version of Froyo on his Droid 2. As soon as the devs got Gingerbread on this phone I switched and never looked back.

Jeez - the close-mindedness of people these days!
I get my smartphone advice from the local homeless population, car advice from the 7-11 cashier, my medical advice from the guy who sells bottled water by the interstate on-ramp, and relationship advice from the guy in the park who yells at dogs.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to boot up Eclair, pour some windshield-wiper fluid into my transmission, swallow half a bottle of Airborne for my aching knee, and fling poo at this girl I like.

I'm saying that according to the expert who sells water by the interstate, Airborne is nothing less than a revolutionary breakthrough in medicine. DUH!
Of course, it should never be confused with US Army Airborne School, of which you are a graduate, correct? I don't know a whole lot about that. I'll have to go ask the woman who scrubs toilets in my office.

Yes, I've been accused of that. What got me was the fact that most paratroopers, those who jump a lot, get bad knees and ankles from all the constant impact. And she probably does know a lot about the school. The military in general, with the exception of the Air Force that I noticed (I think it's the fact that there are few toilets on planes), is a firm believer in toilet scrubbing complete with the pine oil smell. We did have to get up at 0300 to clean restrooms that we rarely used. Fun times.

Anyone happy with Sprint 2.1?

No ones talking about it cuz its some bs. The official update didn't really do much. It is really fast and does fix some issues but nothing really. You lose root if you run root so if you want to try it use damages untouched version

It's not that at all 2.1 was supposed to bring us live wallpapers, faster browser and so fourth but it didn't do any of that. It's ridiculus. And in the back of everyones mind we know that the only reason that sprint didn't deliver that was so everyone would choke up the money and get an evo or the less popular hardly heard of I1
After I installed the stock 2.1 ROM, my phone won't receive any calls. I can make calls, but not receive them. I spent over 2 hours yesterday with Sprint Customer Non-Service, and they were no help. I'm headed to the Sprint Store now to get my phone replaced, hopefully to a 1.5 so I can root that bad boy like I should have in the 1st place.
How come so many people thought we were getting live wallpaper and other advanced features of 2.1? Everything I read before going with a custom ROM was that neither moment or hero would get them because of weak specs.

Do you realize that? do you understand that i will go to sleep tonight and you will not even be on my radar? You will not even matter in any kind of existence what so ever. Your sole purpose as of right now is not even comprehend-able on this online forum. How does it feel when you get off your comfy chair at night and go to sleep knowing that you did absolutely nothing to contribute to any society what so ever. Im not sure you understand anything that goes on around you. Some people on this forum go to sleep thinking about their phones, some think about the next update or how they can contribute to this society...But no, not you, rather than say something useful you feel as if this society owes you something and we don't.

I have a sickness ...

I have a sickness ... not sure what it is called, or if you would even call it a sickness.
Here I am, staring at my Droid Incredible, after having just "un-rooted" AGAIN. I have had this phone since June, and I LOVE IT! I love the fact that you can do so much to it and tweak every aspect of it. It keeps me interested and busy playing with the phone. I have rooted and un-rooted so many times. I have loaded so many different roms with different themes. I am starting to get to the point where I wish I could find a good setup so I can just leave it alone and use it normally, instead of "hacking" it once or twice a week. It sucks! I can't leave it alone. I read about so many cool updated or new ROMS and feel I want to try them out.
Do any of you have the same issue? It is difficult for me to be satisfied so I am always changing my phone. I am tempted to just give it up and get a dumb-phone that just calls and txt's, and maybe get an iPod Touch for music, browsing, and games ... but I know I will end up jail breaking it and tinkering with it. It is a waste of my time! LOL
Anyway, just wanted to vent for a minute to see if it helps me.
I want to find a good setup and stick with it. I am sick of wasting my time rooting, romming, unrooting, etc. I can't help it though ... it's so much fun!
Thanks for reading.
im the same... but i find it normal if you are changing roms every week... i mean normal as in a "normal" rooted user.
isn't this the very reason why we use android though? if we wanted a setup that "just works" and never changes we would all have iphones. apparently that crowd can live with the same setup for 2 years (not that it's really changed since it's debut)!! how can they NOT get tired of looking at the same ole thing for that long?!?
anyways, unless it's ruining your life... keep doing what makes you happy.

Thanks for the inspiration.
I think it has something to do with my OCD as well. Trying to find the perfect ROM/KERNEL/THEME that will give max battery life and performance etc.
Maybe I should just limit myself to once a month.
I always go between CM6 and Virtuous, and sometimes branch out to another ROM but always go back to the two (CM6 & V). I go to Virtuous for the stability and familiarity, and go to CM6 for something different than SenseUI and more experimental.
I just mostly get tired of having to set up my apps and settings over and over.
Thanks again.

This is very true for me too. I just didn't have the humility to post it.

These things are just high-tech crack pipes, and ROMs are just downloadable crack rocks, and rmk40, ihtfp69, kingklick and all the others are just a bunch of crack dealers. This site and the other Android dev sites are like street corners - I'm checking them on a daily basis looking for fresh crack. The analogy breaks down when considering that none of this costs any money (other than voluntary donations) which just fuels the addiction. We're a bunch of crackheads smoking free crack and can't get enough. We definately need a 12 step program around here and a "Droid Incredible Rehab" forum section might be a good idea ;-).
rmk40 is releasing Virtuous 3.0.0 tonight or tomorrow so that'll be the next hit I take. Time to stock up on steel wool.

Also, developers might find information regarding future releases and resulting API changes useful, ahead of time.

Way too quiet. Flash mob anyone?

Sprint and Samsung both have been very quiet since their last "ASAP" tweets and posts. They are either keeping their heads down to avoid getting them chewed off by all of the angry people or they are hoping that if they don't mention the E*ic or F*oyo words that people will just forget.
I wish I knew someone at The Onion because a great story would be, "Egyptian riots linked to angry Epic 4G owners demanding Froyo."
Another great idea would be an "Epic Flash Mob" on February 7th to go along with their big announcement.

Because we have better things to do than send tweets, facebook posts and emails to Sprint and Samsung over an update that we will get when they are ready to give it to us. Our phones are working just fine without 2.2. And once we do get 2.2...most of you will just start *****ing about 2.3.
Maybe you should all just get rid of your Epics...move over to an EVO and continue on with your lives. The devs here have done a wonderful job with the DK28 build and I couldnt be happier.

I couldn't agree more!
This is a fantastic phone. I used to have a Nexus One with T-Mobile. I had FroYo before my fellow nerd friends had even heard of it. I rubbed it in a lot until they started getting the updates on their Droids and EVOs and such.
This phone blows that thing out of the water, even without 2.2
Besides, there IS a way to update this phone to 2.2... what is stopping you if you want it so bad?

Agreed this phone blows any other phone out of the water without Froyo but even if we update this phone with the custom ROMS you still see that most developers would love to have the latest firmware and not just DK28.
Case in point: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941297

Aren't you asking for help for 2.2? CWM messing up? Do you still not care for the source?
I just received a coupon for a free frozen yoghurt! Is this the FroYo that Samsung promised me?

My MWC woes.

I'm gonna be in jail clearing up a warrant starting today. Which means no pathetically slobbering over engadgets live blogs. And already the small leaks leading up to it are so good!
Maybe they'll have the internet in there after all, they are like hotels nowadays

elegant: I know I'm really gonna have to cut back on the terrible crime of turning left into the right hand lane
shroomz: that would be excellent. just to make it irritating for the mail guy, send one for each update.
metal: hopefully only a week... but could be a month or more depending on which way the judge goes hahaha.

Good luck to you man, I know how bad jail sucks. Best piece of advice I can give you- don't drop the soap
hahaha its washoe county.
A. They probably don't have soap.
B. 80 of people in there are weekend warriors for possession of marijuana.
C. I pity the fool that tries to give me a log ride if I were to drop the soap.
Good luck m8.... you'll be fine. Just remember, the first thing you do is find the biggest Guy that's in your cell block/pod... what ever they call them now.
Hit him square on the chin... this can have 2 outcomes. Both a plus!!!
1. He drops like a bag of bricks, you'll get your own cell for a bit and no one will f with you.
2. He smiles, drops you like a bag of bricks, you'll get your own bed in the hospital wing and people will think your crazy and have some kind of death wish.
Win... Win... plus you'll have a great story to tell either way, right?
Anyway here's a link you may want to check out.... I think they over night...

I know my way around a jail a bit. So no internet, listen to the tank boss, stick to your own kind white on white, black with black, etc... always brush your teeth before morning chow or you will get a beatdown. Lastly find out which toilets are for what. One will be for pissing, one for ****ting, and one for washing clothes. Don't mess that up. Good luck.
The EVO you wish you had
Why not show up with a bondsman and skip jail until the court date?
Pay it in full you get it all back if you show up to court.
Better do those taxes with turbotax. You'll get your refund in a week so you can pay those fines.
Take your Evo and disassemble it and smuggle it in your anus like some people do. You can also train a pigeon to drop it off in the yard.

Can you elaborate on that toothbrush part?
Sent from the void...
It probably means that inmates don't want to see pubes in between your teeth during chow time.

So the site of a dude's hairy cornhole which you're about to go to town on is less offensive than some plaque on his teeth? There's a hefty amount of rationalization going on in jail.
