Needs some additional work though especially around how to configure for a specific type/brand of modem.
Thanks
FINALLY a AdHoc that works, many thanks for the file and the instructions. I tried some of the others several times with no luck.
pretty cool thanks for making it easy to find the good work the devs are doing.
Thanks for the how to's
First off, let me say thanks to all you developers and all the hard work you put in.
I am a complete noob to Android, rooting, and custom ROMS. I bought the A500 to travel with to complete simple paperwork, internet, emails, and watch movies while in the plane. I travel a lot so this makes it more compact than my laptop.
I have been following dc13's ROM thread and have to admit I am quite interested. It seems he has managed to greatly improve the battery life which is very nice for me.
My question, any chance to get an A500 Noob section for the stuff we noobs are new to? I have tried reading various threads and write ups from searches but even though itvseems like rooting shares some similar techniques, there is a bit of device specific steps also. I am interested in being able to do simple things like remove apps, try out ROM's, and even do backups. Today I downloaded apps; Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, and Busy Box because it seems those come up a lot. After reading the warnings for BusyBox I decided not to mess with it. I did try to run a simple ROM backup today on ROM Manager and got the !triangle.
I have rooted, using the directions on here. I guess it worked, but when I went into settings and tried to delete Social Jogger using the file manager app, it said I did not have permission.
So as you guys can see, it would be nice to find device specific support for us boneheads who want a bit more freedom, without needing to know all you Devs know.
Any help would be great. I am just not sure which steps to take in which orders and also which apps are required to do what I would like to do.
PS: any idea if these A5's are able to get Swype?
Sorry so long. Thanks again for any and all help guys!
Thanks for this thread ...
I am still unrooted due to the fact that we have no easy way to revert back to stock ( revert to stock for dummies ) ... and the locked bootloader.
this is due to Acer making too many different versions of Build# and Kernel # for various countries of the world ...etc
Why can't we just have 2 versions like the Asus TF do ?? 1 for US region and 1 for WW region... sheesh !!
Could you please add a link to an easy way to restore to stock ( once that becomes available ? )

You have to mount the file system as rw... If you are using EStrong File explorer for example, you have to give it ROOT access before it can write to your /system files. Go to the settings and scroll down to the root portion. enable that... then go to the folder where you have the file you want to delete... and... delete it...
BE CAREFUL DELETING THINGS FROM YOUR /SYSTEM/APP FOLDER AS THIS HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BRICK THE DEVICE... Good hunting! jejeje

This seems very odd
Ok, I may need to look harder here but I have not found anything that could assist me or if I have seen it, I am not too sure on what I need to do.
Here is what I have:
- Acer Iconia a500
- Android 3.0.1
- Kernel 2.6.36.3-00001-g9b3ce2b Stock
- Build Number Acer_A500_1.104.01_COM_GEN1
- Rooted with Gingerbreak
- Installed Acer Recovery (did forget to make an original backup, I know, bad me)
(Screenshot attached to prove it.)
I have tried looking in here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878) to see if I could get an update and update it here to 3.1 but am unsure on which one to use.
I did use this and it worked fine but was did not like the way 3.2 was running. So alas, I am back to 3.0.1 but would like some assistance on installing or ideas on which one to install.
If your trying to go to 3.1 you can try this rom,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159443
That worked! I used the .38 and it worked perfectly. Thank you for your help!

nice job guys good luck definitely recommend looking at the dev forum there always updating and always have the best answers
I am new to the Kindle Fire, and recently rooted with Kindle Fire utility without a hitch. Many thanks to all the Dev's that put that together, great work. I am not new to rooting and customizing ROMs on Droid phones, but new to the "tablet" world.
However, after doing some searching, I am unable to find information on some things.
1) Google Market. Its running fine, but there are a ton of apps missing from the market (ie Facebook). I have seen some threads on how to fix this if I am on CM7, but was wondering if its possible to do this on a "stock" rooted KF?
2) Blocking updates. Is there an easy way to "block" Amazon from being able to push updates to the device? I know this has caused issues like losing root, etc.
3) Freezing Apps. Are there any "standard" apps or processes that can be frozen/removed from the Stock ROM that aren't needed? I haven't been able to find a definitive "list".
Thanks again,

Hey there.
Let me see. You can use "Titanium backup" to freeze stupid things like maps. I dont have mine anymore so i cant populate a list for you atm. You can try to update the "Market" app to resolve issues with missing apps. My advice: use stock rom, root it. And use a launcher like launcher pro. Then use setcpu.
1 - try the modaco rom - it shows to the market as galaxy tab:

Editing the build.prop file should fix market visibility. I just purchased and rooted mine last night but i'm also having the same issue. Going to try out this after work. Should do the trick. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371021

Sounds good. I saw this post, but I haven't seen a build.prop for the stock rooted Kindle fire. If you get yours to work, please post it. Thanks!

I would like to stick with the stock rom, since hardware acceleration seems to be an issue with most of the custom roms. Do you know if Modaco supports hardware acceleration?
The only roms that have trouble with hardware acceleration are the ICS roms, all other roms have working HWA.
As far as I know the missing apps from the market can't be fixed if your on stock, even if you edit the build.prop, thats why I moved from stock to cm7.
I don't know if there is a way to completely block amazon updates, but I just froze silentupdate with titanium backup when I was stock and I never got the notification to move from 6.2.1 to 6.2.2.
The only app I know of that can freeze apps is titanium backup pro in the market, and there is no list of apps that can be removed/frozen on the stock rom, just use common sense when removing/freezing the apps, don't delete an app if you don't know exactly what it is or delete the kindle launcher, and then wonder why your homescreen is gone, and make sure to backup any apps you mess with.

modaco is a optimized 6.2.2 stock rom - you can update with it and loose nothing cause it don't format any partitions - read the op of modaco for more information ...

Thanks I will take a look at that. Thanks for the advice.
Looks like MoDaCo for the Kindle Fire was the way to go. My market is working great now, system is very fast, really impressed overall. Still retains the "stock" feel with a few tweak. Now I have to figure out if it doesn't get updates from Amazon.
look at my first post - the link in point 2
allthrough i think in modaco the file is allready removed it's better to check twice
There is a system app called OTA Silent Update and you can just delete it and your all good.
I am having an issue with the wifi not working on my A500. When I got to toggle it on it says "turning on wifi" but the toggle in the settings never goes to on. I have enable wifi on in the developer app, yet still no wifi thus far...
Any ideas on how to help me fix this?
You are in the wrong place, try tegraowners forums, thors roms are banned here.
Uh.... Your best bet for support for thors (tegraowners) ROM would be the tegraowners website.. wouldn't you think?
I mean they have there own forums and support there.
Most of us here use the ROMs on this website, so when we have problems we can go to the ROMs thread, and ask for support.
Since your ROM is not here, you can try the website that it came from, go to the appropriate thread in there forums.
People can't help you here because his work is banned, and most of us don't use his ROMs, the ones who do,
Go to his website to discuss it, support ect...

Whoops, sorry. Any good roms here that would be capable to boot backtrack through terminal?
Yes there are some very good developers here, and if you download there ROM, you can come back here to the correct thread and post bugs, or ask for support in the general forums (here).
Check out the development section, if you have questions, post here in general, or questions and answers, like if you want to ask what ROMs do everyone prefer, you could get some good advice and information about it, try Q&A for that.
Good luck and have fun!

Offhand, I would suggest you do the following.
Boot to CWM, Do your wipes on ;
1. User Data/factory reset
2. Cache
3. Dalvik Cache
Then go to Mounts and Storage and format
1. System
2. Flexrom
Then re-install the rom. Failure to follow these steps exactly, usually results in wifi issues. Also, do not restore previously backed up data from either CWM or Titanium Backup. Depending on rom version, this can also cause trouble.
Remember, it's not that we don't support people having issues running Thors rom. These are basic steps. Some people, are quick to jump the gun stating " we don't support that rom here". And it's partially true. The main issue, lies with Thor's kernel. So in essence, he cannot post his rom containing his kernel, due to GPA violations. The rest of his work is free to distribute such as the recovery. And contrary to popular belief, he "IS NOT BANNED" from XDA. He still holds an active account. So it's best not to listen to rumor spreaders as sometimes run rampant in the 500 forums.
Due to issues between Thor and XDA, it's preferable to get support for the rom at Thors site. Most people here, have no knowledge of how it works anyhow, so it's best to post on Thors site where other users can help.
Oh, and when you install a rom, make sure you have the correct bootloader version that is compatible with it
Hope this helps.

OK…I have finally gotten my ASUS TF300T unlocked, I have TWRP flashed, and I can now install a custom ROM to my tablet. I would like to thank everyone for helping me out with accomplishing this task; I would especially like to thank diesburg, who went out of his way to walk me thru the process!
So, as a total noob, I tried to load the CYANOGENMOD. I tried versions 10.0 and 10.1. When neither version would load, I read a bit more and found that my tablet will not load either due to incompatibility with the bootloader. The 10.1 simply fails, and the 10.1 loads, but will not boot (hangs up on bootscreen).
My tablet is as follows:
JOP40D.US_epad-10.6.1.15.3-20130416.
JB 4.2.1
My question is; are there any workarounds for using this ROM, which was really the reason for my undertaking this task, or is there is stable ROM that is recommended?
Scar!
What version of TWRP are you using? I installed CROMI Xeno on my tablet and have no issues, only thing I was looking for was smaller DPI.

cromi-x is the way to go mate i use it with that's kernel and ive never had a single random reboot so you cant beat that for stability mate
The big question is why are you going for cyan? What does it have that you want?
Good question,
I see the speed, customization, and stability. I am not enthralled by the ASUS firmware, and wanted to try something different. Cyanogenmod seems to be one of the more popular and stable ROMS.
Is there something I am missing or something else I should try? I am very open to suggestions. I am very new to this entire ROM thing, so, that is why I need all the help I can get.
Scar!
I would still suggest Cromi-x mate its stock based but its in a league of its own and sbdags and the guys here give great support for it too

which version should I be downloading and loading with my build? I noticed a ton of versions.
My tablet is ASUS TF300T
JOP40D.US_epad-10.6.1.15.3-20130416.
JB 4.2.1
It depends on what you like. Cromi x has a lot of under the hood tweaks that don't change user interface much. I liked it more compared to stock, but I like the other Roms, such as baked, aokp, and especially carbon Roms more because these offer stability and speed but also a looot of features not found in stock based Roms. Carbon has a lot of customization. Plus it has an overclock kernel in it. So its fast!

I haven't found AOKP for the TF300T. I am wanting to try a custom ROM on this machine to see what it can really do.
Stability and ease of use is my primary goal. I don't like the all the CRAP that is associated with this stock ROM, but I imagine it would be much quicker if all that was taken out.
I guess the key is, I can try a bunch, but I want something I don't have to play with too much. More or less, a daily driver.
Yeah im using CM as a daily driver, since I rarely update it. For the most part, it is stable, but I need to now upgrade my bootloader for the newer nightlies.

i think I like a few of the ROM's I saw. I like the CROMI-X mod, and would like to run this mod for awhile and see how it operates for me.
The problem, I don't know exactly what version to load with my machine. My tablet is ASUS TF3000T JOP40D.US_epad-10.6.1.15.3-20130416. JB 4.2.1. It's rooted, unlocked, TWRP is loaded. I mean, honestly, I am ready to rock this TF300!!!
As I read, I know that if I load the wrong mod, or the wrong version, I can brick my machine. This is not the desire outcome...lol!
Help on this load if someone can "chime in".
Thanks all!!
Scar!
The CROMI-X uses the firmware you currently have. The only choice you have to make is whether you want ODEX or DEODEX. Theres an explantion link on the post that explains the differences. I use DEODEX.
Not sure if you have stated what TWRP version you are running, but with the firmware you have, you should be running 2.5.0.0-4.2-JB. That will cause you to no to be able to install ROMs successfully

I'm running twrp-2.5.0.0-tf300t-4.2.blob, so, I am gonna try this today. I will download the CROMi-Xenogenesis ODEX 4.7.0_Signed.zip.
I think, as a beginner, this is a good starting point for me.
Thoughts?
Nah man ive flashed nearly all the latest versions of cromi-x (all the odex version and some of the deodexed ones) and 4.7.0 is where its at, disable fsync and then just sit back and see and this should run

Thanks robgee! Everyone has actually been great. Trust me, I am a TOTAL "user" type. I simply hate all the crap that affects speed and efficiency in the technology I have at my disposal! =) This stuff should fly, almost as fast as I think I want something...lol!
So, as I am playing with this ROM, I am finding I like the speed, I like the freedom to customize. Exactly was what I was wanting to do.
Now, I get to throw out the next question. I am finding a problem with APPS downloading. I cannot download APPS from the Playstore. I get a (495) error or, the download just hangs up and never downloads. I did a new flash, and the same thing occurs. Is there a setting I am missing??
Thoughts?
Scar!
there are two things that spring to mind mate first is remove your google account then add it again (this works if the play store on your pc dosent let you pick your tf300 to install apps) the second is try flashing the ccs store patch if you didnt change your dpi, did you choose to disable fsync mate?
also did you pick the right build (us for us and ww for everywhere else)
When I was flashing, there was a checkbox and a "read me" page that discusses fsync. I disabled as directed. So, I think I am good to go there.
I am gonna try removing and then reattaching to my google account.
What is the CCS store patch? Oh, and I do not believe I changed my DPI. I kinda did a very generic flash, nothing spectacular. I am careful not to "walk the rope without a net" when I play with this stuff, I know I can destroy something, so I keep it pretty simple.
OK, lemme try the removal of my google account and try from there first.
Thanks sir! I'll update pretty soon!
