First off, let me say thanks to all you developers and all the hard work you put in.
I am a complete noob to Android, rooting, and custom ROMS. I bought the A500 to travel with to complete simple paperwork, internet, emails, and watch movies while in the plane. I travel a lot so this makes it more compact than my laptop.
I have been following dc13's ROM thread and have to admit I am quite interested. It seems he has managed to greatly improve the battery life which is very nice for me.
My question, any chance to get an A500 Noob section for the stuff we noobs are new to? I have tried reading various threads and write ups from searches but even though itvseems like rooting shares some similar techniques, there is a bit of device specific steps also. I am interested in being able to do simple things like remove apps, try out ROM's, and even do backups. Today I downloaded apps; Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, and Busy Box because it seems those come up a lot. After reading the warnings for BusyBox I decided not to mess with it. I did try to run a simple ROM backup today on ROM Manager and got the !triangle.
I have rooted, using the directions on here. I guess it worked, but when I went into settings and tried to delete Social Jogger using the file manager app, it said I did not have permission.
So as you guys can see, it would be nice to find device specific support for us boneheads who want a bit more freedom, without needing to know all you Devs know.
Any help would be great. I am just not sure which steps to take in which orders and also which apps are required to do what I would like to do.
PS: any idea if these A5's are able to get Swype?

I am still unrooted due to the fact that we have no easy way to revert back to stock ( revert to stock for dummies ) ... and the locked bootloader.
this is due to Acer making too many different versions of Build# and Kernel # for various countries of the world ...etc
Why can't we just have 2 versions like the Asus TF do ?? 1 for US region and 1 for WW region... sheesh !!
Could you please add a link to an easy way to restore to stock ( once that becomes available ? )

You have to mount the file system as rw... If you are using EStrong File explorer for example, you have to give it ROOT access before it can write to your /system files. Go to the settings and scroll down to the root portion. enable that... then go to the folder where you have the file you want to delete... and... delete it...
BE CAREFUL DELETING THINGS FROM YOUR /SYSTEM/APP FOLDER AS THIS HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BRICK THE DEVICE... Good hunting! jejeje

This seems very odd
ok so i flashed over the Phiremod Miui and got constant process.android.acore force closes..like every 10 seconds...i turned off my sync, but left background on and that slowed down the force closes...and of course there is the market issue as well...
it kinda bums me out because i like the MIUI rom...but yeah....anyone out there know of a fix for it?....i dug around in quite a few forums looking and couldn't find anything
i'm bumping this because i am still wondering if anyone has any input whatsoever...

2nd, there are threads in the development section for each rom which would address your problem if you would read them.
Nevertheless, when I flash a new rom I always format data, system and cache in clockwork mod recovery. Even tho some say you don't have to, I have found that it leads to a much better install.
I would not install any MIUI rom right now as there are problems with the market. I have not found a decent fix.
Standard cm7 or the MiRage roms are probably best for you.
Cm9 still has glitches that I don't think you are ready to handle (based on your experience with phiremods Miui).

Well i censored myself but that was mainly out of frustration, I usually have been able to fix most of my problems with any of my android devices...and this one was stumping me. I know there are separate threads in the dev section...but i did not have the allotted post count to post in those threads and did not want to spam a bunch of threads.
So, yeah i'm waiting on CM9 to get less buggy, simply because i want to use my NC as well as modify it, I prefer stable builds to testing or nightlies...I've been through that experience with a couple phones and it did not turn out well.
One of these days i'm going to jump in the deep end and try developing...but, as the rest of you. i'm quite busy when offline..
anyway, thank you for your input...
Apology accepted. Sounds like you know your way around android. But here are some suggestions if you are set on using Phiremods rom.
Again, in the mounts and storage section of recovery, format data, system and cache. Back out and do factory reset/wipe. I know people have said this is not necessary, but I have had problems when I have not done this.
Make sure you are using phiremods gapps. Standard cm7 ones won't work.
The market will fc. That is a given. You can uninstall updates to a certain point, then it will fc anyway.
I love the miui roms myself and am so sad that there is no new development on them for the nook.
I am using MiRage rom currently and am happy with it. I have also flashed samiams's cm9 and loved it but until they find a way to up the resolution and get video going, its not a daily driver for me.

I'll try that out, Also I read from someone that the Dark Market/Black Themed Market will stop the fc's on regular MIUI, So I will try that out as well and let you know...

I have CWM 5.0.0.6 on my pad, which works ok. However, I'd like to have the latest version and I've even donated for the touch version. Now, I've tried installing the recovery through terminal and through Rom Manager. Both says everything's fine, but the recovery still 5.5.0.4. Rom Manager, however, tells me it's 5.8.2.1 . I'd be inclined to think the recovery console just states the wrong version, but the lack of touch support is a dead giveaway.
An other indication is that "reboot into recovery" just reboots my tablet, but does not start the recovery.
Anyone seen this before? Know a way around it?

How difficult would it be to try to be nice in the post? I was conflicted on whether to post in the QA section of the development section as it very well could be a bug more than a user question.
But...since I ended up with this section, it'd be great if a mod could move the post if it is in fact in the wrong one.

It's difficult to be nice about it because it's incredibly frustrating. If you're starting a thread in development to ask a question, it's in the wrong place. Period. The only place you should be discussing bugs in the development section is a thread for a specific ROM, kernel, etc.
As far as your problem goes, if you looked around any of the ROM of recovery threads you would see that ROM Manager is nothing but trouble for the TF. That's probably what screwed you up in the first place. If you want the latest recovery for your Transformer you need to use one of these:

Thanks for the links - I'll look into that. Regarding the frustration, I hear you. I'm a mod at some forums, and I know the feeling when someone's posting all the wrong things in all the wrong places. Didn't do it on purpose Actually, I knew it would probably be answered quicker in the QA section, but as I thought it might have a pinch of bug in it I opted for the slower way

There's 2 main reasons really. The first reason is to stop the development threads getting filled with questions which have nothing to do with the thread they're posted in. That then makes the thread go off-topic which is not what a development thread is there for.
The second reason is because there are too many repetitive questions being asked. The main problem with that is the fact that other users will sometimes attack the OP and 'flaming' them.
The main way which this thread will help to stop that happening is by helping you out as much as possible, while being in a friendly environment.

While it's recommended that you always do a full wipe before installing, you HAVE to do a full wipe before installing your first ROM. If you don't, you N7 will not boot up.

You need a patched PowerHAL. On a very basic level, after a while the stock google PowerHAL likes to revert a lot of settings to stock. This includes the CPU clock speeds, etc. I got my PowerHAL from here

And I flashed the nofreq one. It will NOT change your frequency, ever. After you flash the PowerHAL, use your favourite app (I like tricksterMOD, but support your devs by buying their apps) to set your kernel settings, and set them on boot. This is the easiest way to get settings to stick.

You could use an init.d script to set a maximum clock speed. This way, you will need a kernel/ROM that supports boot.img.

No chips are created equally. Some can take more OC than others. It is fact that too much OC can shorten the life of your CPU. A general rule I have seen used a lot is to not go around 20-30% over the stock speed. That is around 1.5GHz which most kernels get up to. However, a lot of devices can take more and will go higher. See for yourself, just don't be stupid

No. Probably not. Chances are you're on an old bootloader, which has a bug that doesn't allow you to get into recovery from the BL without being connected to a computer. So, connect it to your computer, hold vol down/power for 10 secs to go back to the bootloader. You can go to the recovery from there.

You can't drag/drop in recovery between your N7 and a PC. Either boot into android and transfer your files, or use ADB while in recovery.

You need to be running completely stock to update. So, you need to either flash a stock ROM or the stock image.

No. Its the tegra smartdimmer. When your device is playing a video, the Tegra 3 automatically bumps up the contrast and dims the backlight, to save battery. This is a feature. To turn it off, either use a script or tricksterMOD (which is much easier).

When you flash a new ROM/kernel, you need to give it a few battery cycles before battery is reported accurately. So, flash the new kernel, drain it (not necessarily to 0%), charge it fully, drain it again, charge, then play around. Do not complain about battery or anything without doing a few cycles first.

Usually you can probably dirty flash. But if it causes problems, don't report them. Best thing to do is to reflash the ROM with a full wipe and see if bugs persist. I always wipe when changing to a different ROM, but when updating a ROM i don't wipe usually.

I would say no. Because, if there is a problem you have sort of voided your warranty. I like to keep my devices for a month without rooting/unlocking them in case there is a fault or something. You should do the same, I’d hate to have a brand new device, root it and then find a fault and have voided your warranty. Companies can be sneaky and can probably try to avoid fixing your device under warranty if you tamper with it. However you could always relock and revert to stock, but it is much easier to be patient and make sure there are no problems

Short answer: no.
Long answer: nope.
Rooting alone will not change anything relateds to battery or performance. However custom ROMs, kernels and other mods will change things. For example flashing a more optimised kernel might improve performance, especially if you overclock it. Similarly, underclocking generally improves battery life. Of course it depends on what crap you have on your device too, but that's the general idea. Usually in the OP of a ROM/kernel thread, and in the comments you can get a good idea on whether it is optimized for battery, performance or a combination.

*Significant port of a ROM from one device to another, giving enhanced features or functionality to the users of the target device.

I got my nexus 7 yesterday and updated it immediately to 4.2.1. All good so far. I start using and all goes well until I remember "this thing has the swipe keyboard, right?". I start swiping and nothing happens. Check the settings, it is on. Boot the device, no effect. Enable and disable the thing and boot the tablet a few times more, still no go.
At this point I decided I'll fix that later and made another user account for my GF to use. I immediately notice that the swipe typing works on that account just fine. I check the settings and looks like it's on by default. I go back to my own profile and check the settings again, but still no go.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the tip. I tried that, but settings crashes every time I try to enable the PC layout keyboard.
I'm gonna do a factory wipe since the tablet is still almost on default anyway.
edit: Ok did reset and everything works just fine now. Now just wait for play store to install all the apps back
I have just got my new Nexus 7 and I want to root my N7 with Wug's root toolkit. I was thinking if I just don't check the box: flash custom recovery. Can I then just do the OTA updates? Because I don't want to install a Custom Rom.

Just got a stock unrooted unmodded N7 32GB with build JZO54K. On first boot it found the OTA update to 4.2.1 so I happily accepted the update. A few minutes into the upgrade process I get the "dead" droid with the triangle, guess something went wrong. It boots up again into JZO54K and works fine.
I can force another attempt at the update by stopping and clearing the data for Google Services Framework and searching for updates again, but with the same results.
Am I missing something? Would like to try pure AOSP before going CM on this little beauty
How to root Nexus 7 without toolkit?
Root Nexus 7 must flash the CWM or other recoveries? In the menu of "Google Nexus 7 TOOLKIT V4.0.0", I found the button "Root" and the check "and flash recovery...". Does it mean I can root the machine without flash any recovery? Thanks.

If you've only rooted you can do ota's. Just as long as you don't change ANYTHING in the /system partition like installing flashable zips

Sure its completely stock? If it is, it should work... If you be got any more troubles ask Google
If you want pure AOSP there are ROMs for that you can flash, if you root

You can root by having all the right superuser binaries etc
But its easier to flash the recovery, and then flash the latest superuser/ supersu zip.

Thank you for reply. I can understand your second sentence, but I can't understand the first one. Can you say something more? I just want to root the machine without any toolkit and recovery.

I would recommend flashing the recovery in order to get everything working properly, and to easily recover if something goes wrong
I was wondering whether it's possible to share files between the different users of the same N7? For instance to make video or music files available regardless of who is logged in.
I don't seem to be able to find anyone even discussing this anywhere at all.

The closest option to that is Multi-User App Share. It doesn't have the ability to share files though. Maybe the creator will make it possible in a future update though

I have seen it in the play store, but I'm not sure how that would make sharing files within the tablet possible, and since it requires rooting I can't even try it unfortunately.

I get a "status 7" message when flashing with CWM!
It seems you are running PhilZ Kernel or a derivative of it. This kernel seems to be broken and unable to flash. Flash Siyah, Dorimanx or any other Kernel via CWM or ODIN, boot to Recovery and try again.
My phone asks for a PIN or some other code which I don't have!
You have a SIM.Locked Phone which was unlocked via an exploit. Samsungs kernel-update fixes a few issues, including those exploits. Use GalaxSim Unlock to re-unlock your phone.
Youtube/Market/GMail crashes!
You need to flash the corresponding 4.2.1 GApps, currently 20121212.
The Clock app (or any other app) crashes!
Go to Settings -> Apps -> All -> Clock (or whatever it was) and delete it's data.
Are there any other kernels supporting CM10.1?
As far as I know, all Siyah-based Kernels should work. Remember that you are not supposed to post on the CyanogenMod 10.1 official nightlies // discussion thread when using a different kernel.
I have flashed [insert any kernel here], now my phone won't boot!
The kernel obviously does not support CM10.1/Android 4.2.1. Reflash the ROM to get the stock kernel back.
Where are the developer and performance options?
Google has hidden them. With good reason. You can render your phone unbootable if you use those incorrectly. To quote Codeworkx: "bricked devices, dead SD cards, thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed."
If you apsolutely need to use them, tap Build Number until you are a developer (about 7 times).
I unlocked the Developer Options and tried to use "Simulate Screens". Now my screen is black and won't turn on again!
That is why one does not simply mess around with the dev options. Reboot your phone and press vol. down while it's booting. This will boot it to Secure Mode, where you can go and untick "Simulate Screens". Fixed.
I cannot find Photosphere! Will it be added?
No. Photosphere is not open source and therefore only available for Nexus devices.
Charging speed is very slow!
Due to hardware limitations, there are only three possible charging speeds, one of which is never used. The others are 450mA on USB and 650mA on the charger. Your phone is either draining power while being charged (media scanner?) or has a problem with the USB connector. Try cleaning it CAREFULLY or find the app responsable for the drain with BetterBetteryStats.

Sometimes I get freezes when scrolling through long lists!
I have never experienced this. People suggest that ticking "Force GPU Rendering" in Developer Options solves this. Other People suggest that forcing GPU rendering breaks other things, e.g. the keyboarld leaves a black space in WhatsApp. I have never experienced this, neither.
My Car Stereo/Handsfree/other Bluetooth device does not work correvtly!
All AOSP 4.2.1 ROMs including the Nexus 4 seem to have problems with Bluetooth, or more specifically A2DP. Rumour has it that it will be fixed in 4.2.2.
I get "Out of storage" messages and can no longer install Apps!
Viber and Lucky pacher are known to trigger this. Try to move them to your external SD card. If that doesn't do the trick, search /data/apps for .odex files and delete them.
I get tons of dumpstate_ril_RESET_BY_CP_SILENTRESET.log files at /data/log !
These are logs of RIL crashes. Do NOT use GetRIL to fix this. Use this instead. These zips flash modem, RIL and a few other related files. They are much more reliable than GetRIL. You can also try to Flash XXLS8 without RIL and hen reflash CM, it comes with XXLS8 RIL.
The rotation- and the acceleration sensor do not work anymore!
Deactivating tilt to scroll in Chrome should help.
Real Racing 3/Simpsons/other games crash after a very short time!
Blamesung. This is a problem with the current mali driver (mali is the graphics chip). Do not expect it to be fixed. There is a possibility to flash older drivers and fix the gaming issues (see siyah kernel), but that will bring the graphical glitches in the UI and keyboard back.
UPDATE: It seems to me that it's not the mali driver, but the audio HAL acting up. I have sudden loss of audio and a game crash a few seconds after, most prominently in World of Goo, and some people report that disabling all things audio via in-game controls fixes the crashing.
I still have a problem that was not discussed here!
Reflash the ROM and wipe cache and dalvik cache in Recovery. Reboot. Delete the data of the app that is misbehaving. Search the CyanogenMod 10.1 official nightlies // discussion thread to see if anyone has had this problem before you, and if there is a fix. If all of this fails, ask in that thread and someone will hopefully try to help you.

I have been considering CM10.1 and aren't too bothered about some of the bugs but the GPS one does concern me. I use my phone as my everyday satnav, does this GPS bug mean that the navigation app is currently useless on CM10.1?

True, All of the above answers are completely useless, because they have been answered countless times alerady. But still people ask them, sometimes the same question twice in the same thread page. But instead of flaming the questioners, yelling at them, i try to answer them in one, easy to find place. It is an experiment to see if maybe the original thread gets cleaner with this, and more efficient at solving the real problems as well as discussing issues and solutions. In my oppinion, telling people to tap the build number 7 times does not count as discussion...

nightlies have small update day by day. Stable are versions are like milestones. I use cm10.1 nightlies.

On earlier CM version 10 there was "Developer options" in settings were I could simply change that, in "Root access" section.
My problem is that i get this: (shell has been denied superuser permissions) on my Samsung galaxy tab2 7.0 when trying to install app's wirelessly from my computer using "APK Batch Installer" that I found on the internet, ow and on the tab I use adbWireless app.
Typing "su" in terminal emulator and getting access to it doesn't work.
I am trying to solve this for few days and I just now found out that on CM 10 version everything would work if i would get ADB access, so I ended here asking for help. :fingers-crossed:
P.S. Sorry.. Writing this i didn't notice that this treat is for specifically one phone, that's because I googled this But any help would be appreciated.

If you get problems installing cm10.1 using the leaked version of Samsung jelly beans insecure kernel. You don't have to flash a kernel using odin.. If you flash sky fires dream kernel.. Reboot recovery and install cm10.1 from this kernel.. Everything works great.

At least one of the mentioned problems has already been fixed:
My GPS-tracking shows 2 Km instead of the few hundred meters which i actually run. My average Speed is 100Km/h!

Sorry for the late answers, however, i have prewarned in the OP.... Have you given Root access to ADB? it is in the developer options.

It's not that bad. The only real problem atm is A2DP and bluetooth telephony. the ussues posted here are mostly unimportant or solvable.
