Ok. Right. After 24 hours of owning this device, their is no file manager whatsoever out of the box. It cannot connect to any wifi anywhere. It cannot be paired [well, it "pairs" its just not "connected"] with my epic 4g touch via bluetooth to share my 3g connection. It cannot accept usb tethering. It basically cant do anything. Its on 3.1 so its not an upgrade problem. Its a piece of ****. Why the hell has nobody addressed this? I know im not the only one with these issues.

1. So install one?
2. Sounds like either a user error or a defective unit.
3. Are you just connecting them through Bluetooth Settings or are you using a tethering app?
4. Update to 3.2.
Ultimately, you're an idiot. This tablet has it's problems, but you're creating more for yourself by being so stupid.

i came into this thread thinking your a500 creaks like h*!!. How hard is it to download a file manager/explorer? Lol
How does one download a file manager without an internet connection? Oh wait, ill put the apk on my phones sd card and place it in my iconia....oh wait, there is no way to access it. Hurr.

While im at it ill update it. Hold on. Wait. I cant. Maybe ill use barnacle and go through every channel until it picks up the signal. Oh wait. It cant. Every channel doesnt show. Maybe pdanet tablet. Wait, I need it installed on my acer. Wait. Cant do anything in the market. Maybe ill root it and try finding a rom with a wifi fix. Oh ****, wait. No file manager to install the gingerbreak. Has nobody else encountered any of this? This is my second device in 2 days that is basically a brick.

No idea, as your wifi problem is either one of two things, bad hardware, or pilot error, but judging by your posts, I'm betting on the latter.
Either way, IMHO, you'd be much happier with what I suggested for you.

Rather than your attitude problem, and everyone running you down for it, lets see if we can actually HELP you, shall we?
First, the A500 isn't a piece of ****.. It's a great machine with great hardware and only one or two VERY minor issues. One of those MIGHT be why you can't connect to wifi.
Y'see, the A500 isn't able to connect to an ad-hoc wifi connection, it needs a proper hotspot in infrastructure mode. Once you have THAT, you'll be able to connect and download things fine.
However, it's not impossible that you have a faulty device, OR maybe a device that returned to the store after someone screwed with it, so I suggest a full hardware reset. There's a pinhole in the side of your device. Press this to reset your hardware. Once booted up, press it AGAIN as it's advised to reset twice to clear any possible hardware issues.
If you still have problems after that, and you know your router has infrastructure mode, then you might have bad hardware so take it back.
go to Mc Donalds get on the free wi fi there down load your stupid File manager or go to walmart get a wifi router and have all the wifi you want. Thats is if you have internet connection at home.

no he wouldn't because the ipad sux, that bias is from personal experience. here is why ANY apple mobile device sucks
1. to download any music or apps from your pc (which i had to because i get my music LEGALLY for free from http://www.8bitpeoples.com/discography and https://8bc.org and none of that is on the itunes store) (or mac if you're an idiot {because macs can play about 0.003 % of the best pc games and even if they were compatible they are not powerful enough to play them and have them look good at all, in fact my alienware m18x LAPTOP is more powerful than the most "powerful" imac.} this is also from personal experience) you have to connect to itunes (more like itarded) and "sync" your piece of crap forever and because of antipiracy bulls*** you can have ONLY 1 email account linked to 5 pc's (which is a ridiculously low number btw)
2. you HAVE to have a credit card (which your kids can abuse VERY easily)
3. you have to hack it just to download any kind of emulator to play your (owned) classic games.
4. apple makes s*** sandwiches that cost $80 to $200 to make and charge about 4 to 8 times what they cost to make (and yes that is still ridiculous even AFTER factoring in marketing and profit) which makes apple suck so bad it's amazing they aren't bankrupt by now.
5. with android you have LIMITLESS customization on a device with YOUR choice (not apple's) of screen size, power, ports to plug stuff in and MORE.
sorry for ranting like that it's just i am fed up with apple's bulls*** they have been pulling for years.

i believe the DOA they are talking about is the tab..
Yeah, I've been banging on that discussion all day.
^ I can see that.
Time will tell of course, but there's speculation here in the UK, that the carriers will begin to offer the iPad subsidized with a contract, and that by Xmas you'll be able to pick up an iPad for £200.
IMHO, I doubt that this will actually increase iPad sales much. The best selling iPads are the WiFi only models because it's simply too large to carry about for most users. The same is not true of the Tab.
I don't believe that the Tab will get anywhere close to the iPad total sales, due to the power of the Apple brand, but with products like the Advent Vega and Toshiba Folio, I think that Android tablets will do very well indeed, with the Tab occupying the "premium" space.
Regards,
Dave
Honestly, everyone looks with interest at my tab, then say, it cant be better than the iPad though surely.
I give them a 2 minute demo. No one has come back to me saying the iPad is better after my demo.
Only reason people would say the iPad is better, is because of the power of marketing (or if they really did require 10")
I don't know why we should waste time with Engadget readers (no offense ) Let them enjoy what they think/have. It's so obvious that Engadget is Steve's bud. How on earth a N8 12MP camera is not any better than the iP camera is beyond me.
I wonder how many people are going to be returning their tab after using it for a week and going, hmmm, this can't replace my phone, it surely can't replace my lt... why am I carrying this thing around again? - Ohh, that's right! Angry Birds!

I don't understand why anyone ever thought this was going to replace their phone......does the argument that a netbook will replace your phone make any more sense? No.....
Personally I never looked at the tablet market as something that would replace any other device I have. Tablets, for me at least, are a WANT item and not a NEED item like my work laptop or my phone. I purchased the Tab for those times I'm on the go and want entertainment and games on something with a screen that's bigger than 4 inches (phone)
Now....Can the tab do almost everything my phone can do? Yes.....Are some tasks easier on the tab than on the phone? Yes.....But vice versa my phone can do some things MUCH better than my tab and for that reason it will never fully replace my phone...
I guess I'm just not buying anyone's "I bought it to replace so and so" argument.....no one out there is buying an ipad to replace an iphone or an ipod touch or a mac computer. They're simply adding to their arsenal of electronics which I'm all for
I do replace my N97 w the tab. There is a thing called bluetooth u know

I travel a fair amount, so this thing is ideal for those countless hours in airports, hotel restaurants, cabs, etc. Sure, it does everything my Galaxy S phone can, but it does it better, and it does it longer, while still being portable.
I also use the HELL out of it around the house. I'm no longer chained to my PC or laptop, I can and do use it comfortably all over the place. Reading, surfing, music, movies, and yes, even a little Angry Birds. Beats the hell out of a laptop on the loo, I might add.
I've even gotten good use out of it at work, and that doesn't count emails.
Long story short, this doesn't really replace anything, but it fills some rather large gaps quite nicely. Some you don't even realize exist.
The tab almost completely replaced my phone.
I use it 90% of my time (with a BT headset). The only time I take my phone instead of the tab is when I go out at night.
It also replaced my laptop almost completely .
I hardly touch the thing anymore.
The only time I touched my laptop last week was when I had to draft a long email. Other than that the tab does everything I need and does it well.

I couldn't agree with this more - my Tab follows me everywhere around the house, and is now my primary source of internet and multimedia when I'm not otherwise sat at my desk in front of a PC for work.

Alright im thinking of buying my wife a Iconia cause i hate to get her a iPad cause after going from iphone to my atrix i now belive iOS is crap. A few questions i got is 1. Does it have market support? 2. Does it have a unlocked bootloader 3. Is there root options or anything of that nature. Is there a better product out there for the money any insight will be greatly appreciated thank you
Yes to pretty much everything you just asked. All Honeycomb tabs right now are pretty unlocked and completely easy to root.

I haven't changed the rom on my a500, nor do I plan to but so far I love my tablet. The market works just fine although you may have to find alternatives for some Apps like Facebook. The annoying thing to me about the a500 is that sometimes the screen turns on by itself when not powered off and it kills the battery quickly. Also I don't like the short length of the charger cable. The use of a usb keyboard is great but I haven't tested out a mouse yet.
Like I said before, I love it (4.5 out of 5).

Full market support, full connectivity (SD, USB, HDMI), can be rooted as easily as downloading an app and clicking once with your pinky. For the money, there's not a tablet put that comes close. Transformer needs $150.00 docking station for connectivity, GTab has no connectivity, Thrive is as big and heavy as your house, xoom has no connectivity either.
They can be had for under $400.00!
Edit: more cooked ROMs than you can shake your d!k at!

Sorry, I was curious about your comment. I'm planning on borrowing my stepfather's Iconia to play around with it, which is why I'm on the Acer forum, but when you say that the Gtablet (which I own) has no connectivity, what are you referring to? Everything you have in parenthesis exists on the Gtab, well, HDMI via the $42 dock. We have standard USB and mini USB, a micro SD slot and as mentioned, HDMI from the dock...
just curious, thanks!
EDIT: Don't take this as indication that I think that the Gtab is superior in any way. In fact, I'll never recommend one to anybody due to the poor customer support.

I don't think you have to worry about accessing the market with any of the newer tablets. That would appear to have been a problem with the older ones. My first Android device was the Archos 5 IT(which is still going strong with my sister) and you had to do a market hack to access the real market on it. My brother's horrible Gentouch78(seriously made the A5IT seem wonderful) also has to be hacked to access the market which is something I've still not gotten around to doing. Hmmm, compared to those 2 tablets, I love the Iconia despite my wifi issues.
Market.google market. Amazon app store. Gameloft.nook app and books.
Do a web search you will find alot of alternative solutions to not only Google's market.but of course they are not all equal.

First off, it's against forum rules to ask for/post paid apps.
Secondly, can you seriously not do a Google search for it? It was rediculously easy to find.
Thirdly, PAY THE DEVELOPER THE $1.65!

Second, Here is the link I found, it's in something called the Android Market...not too sure what that is, but it's $1.65.
Third, it's $1.65. I know, hella expensive. I wish the internet had this thing, it would let you search for things on the internet... Does anyone know where I can Google this idea of a website to search for things on the interwebs???

Indeed it works. It's an extremely easy setup to change the PS3 controller's MAC address to point to the Xoom. It works quite well, but I do not see much use for it really. There aren't many major games that I would use it on. Possibly the Zenonia series, but I've been done with them for awhile now since I beat them so many times.
Word of advice though. It's a good idea if you have a spare PS3 controller that you don't ever use. Reason being: This setup changes your controller's MAC address, and it will need to be re-synced with the PS3 through the USB cable if you ever want to use it there again. Just a useful heads up if you are a frequent PS3 gamer as myself.
i have a ps3 controller and no ps3
use it connected with USB HOST connection and with fpse for playing resident evil - was fairly impressed with that - but wireless connection would be better obviously

Need to buy a notebook for studying, the tablet was just a waste of time.
Sending it back to Asus on an RMA. I'm one of the poor fools that had their tablet go into an endless loop when I tried to bring it back from sleep after the ICS update. When I get it back I'm going to ebay it and try another brand. Two RMAs within a 6 month period (one for a dead power button, now this) has convinced me to wait for the iPad 3. I'm sure it's just the luck of the draw but every Apple product I have ever purchased has worked perfectly - the build quality of the Transformer, at least in my case, has soured me on messing with Asus any more.
finally able to actually use the browser, and now i have chrome as a bonus.
honestly, i love it even more with a couple minor exceptions. still can't play high profile 720p mkvs, and none of my custom icon/shortcut apps are working properly.
You actually thought your transformer was going to replace a laptop? I find it ironic how there were all these people kicking & screaming like spoiled little brats wanting ICS. Now it seems that every post someone is complaining about ICS.
Is ICS prefect probably not, will it ever be? Hell no, what is perfect in this world.
I think there are a couple if big improvements. File Explorer is much improved. Also now there is a task manager widget built in that can be put on your desktop.
Now I still can't do a search on XDA with the stock browser.

No, not for a second, just thought it would be nice to have something different as my studying device, found out tablets are just toys to show high technology (my thought) and where their actually none usefull at all.

You actually thought your transformer was going to replace a laptop? I find it ironic how there were all these people kicking & screaming like spoiled little brats wanting ICS. Now it seems that every post someone is complaining about ICS.

I'm willing to bet that the majority of computer users could easily replace their desktop or laptop with a tablet. Unless you are using some specialized, high-end software, tablets can perform most tasks.
It's been a year since I've needed my laptop and I can use my tablets for both work and play.

Hello
Is it possible to connect usb 3G modem and make it work ??
I was picturing a bluetooth or wifi tethering of a mobile with a data connection to the nexus 7 as a possibility. Still not sure if i'm even getting one though.
People need to stop complaining about no 3g connectivity on devices the size of a tablet. Really? When are you going to sit down and use your tablet to browse the web in a public space that does not offer wifi? Nowadays we all have smartphones in case we need to quickly check an email, etc. The only time I would like to really have internet access would be if I go camping or go to a remote place. Lets be honest, how many times do you go camping a year? I know there are people who earn their living on the go and cannot perform without access to the web. The rest of us do not need this feature unless you are really addicted to the internet. Thanks for letting me share my opinion.

I'm not complaining. I like the Nexus 7 a lot and for sure i will buy one when it is available at amazon or any other store that ship internationally. For me i use the 3G a lot and wifi is not available in the places i spent most of the time in. I was asking if it possible to connect a 3g usb modem like the asus transformer

It was a general statement, do not take it personal. A lot of people are criticizing google for not including 3g connectivity.
You're better off tethering from your smartphone.

not everyone lives in a developed country like you. some of us live outside of the US if you don't already know that. in some countries wifi is not as ubiquitous as in the US. i for one spend a lot of time travelling on a car where i am not the one driving. i love to browse the web using my smartphone on a trip. i'd love to do the same thing with tablet (nexus 7) without having to tether from my smartphone and drain the phone's battery. but that's just my opinion and thanks for letting me share it.
I've been searching for a way to have a 3g connectivity as well and until now I've found 3 solutions:
1- Tether internet from your phone
2- buy one Huawei E5830
3- buy a 3g dongle, an usb to micro usb adapter and compile the drivers for android (I've no clue how to do it or if it's even possible on the nexus 7)
Regards

I was also wondering about this so I emailed google, here is their reply:
"Thanks for contacting Google with your question.
Unfortunately I can't confirm that your OTG cable will work with your device, however I would definitely suggest that if you have one to give it a try."
Er thanks google!

Option 3 should instead be a mifi device so no need for extra expense of a cable

So, would this be the same question as asking "given that my phone and data plan allow tethering, can I tether my phone to this tablet and use the data connection to browse on my tablet?"
I plan to use this tablet while i'm at work for reading while i'm on my lunch break. I already do this on my phone (use Pulse to catch up on all the science and tech news) but would really like to be able to just tether my phone to the tablet and use the tablet for easier reading (and no, I don't have wifi connection at work, and I eat my lunch in the break room...no use wasting gas going down the street to McDonalds which also eats up my lunch time. I cherish every precious second lol).
EDIT: Can't believe I forgot this. I always give out detailed info, lol. Anyway, my current phone is the T-Mobile G2x running Android 2.3.4. Not sure if that would make any difference, but I prefer to give out too much info than not enough
I suggest you check out Foxfi in the Google play store. Its a free workaround to turn your Android device into a WiFi hotspot. The app is free, and you don't have to pay your provider for a hotspot plan. It will just be using the phone data you're already paying for. You also don't have to be rooted. When you have Foxfi activated, you can connect anything that can run off a wireless connection to it like your laptop and most likely the Nexus 7. I don't have a Nexus 7 yet so I can't confirm this completely, but I'm able to get Foxfi to work for other Android tablets. If you're on Sprint, sprint has blocked Foxfi from the play store, so just Google Foxfi and download from their website. Also, Foxfi doesn't play completely nice with all devices, so you may need to use it with bluetooth tethering with specific phones. All the instructions and disclamers are in the app description. Definitely check it out though. My wife and I love it...
why stop complaining

well, I think that ppl should continue complaining about missing 3G connectivity. 3G/4G connectivity should be state of the art as it has been in the past two years since the 7" Galaxy Tab was introduced. 7" is the best compromise in mobility and comfortable display size as well as a compromise regarding communication capabilities and tablet (life)style. I personally use an original 7" Galaxy Tab, privately and for business, and I love(!) being able to use it as a phone (w/ BT haedset) and device for internet access whenever and wherever I might be (even when camping, in the subway on a bus or in the mountains). There's no full WiFi coverage here in Austria and, honestly, I don't hink it's anywhere else. It's just such an advantage NOT to need a second (or third device e.g. TomTom or Garmin) device for connectivity, navigation or communication that I don't wanna miss it. Due to that it also bothers me (OT, as this is discussed in another thread) not to have a camera. As I've got only one device (and am very happy with that "configuration") I often use the camera for taking snapshots and sharing them online (after editing on the tablet) or deciphering QR codes etc.
In the beginning I was thrilled by the announcement of the Nexus 7 and it's incredible specs but honestly, I think there are too many no-go's for a 2012 7"-tab and I'll most probably choose Huawei's MediaPad as "legitimate successor" for my GT. it might be slower and more outdated but in my point of view way more "sophisticated".
thanks for letting me share my opinion..
now back to M.Noury's question. as it's possible to use 3G dongles with almost every "cheap" tablet that's e.g. offered on CECT-shop I'd definitely give it a try.
cheers
Tom
Anyone tried any 3g dongles?
tried with a zte MF112 and a huawei E535. Stick mount sees the card reader portions of the sticks and the status lighs start to flash but thats about it, not found any way of making use of them
