I am debloating my phone using Root Explorer and I'm looking to remove a few more apps but I cannot distinguish by name which ones they are in /system. Anyone know the name of the apks of the 'Email' and 'IM' apps as well as the 'Data Usage' widget apk?
There are two email programs on the phone to start, one is the corporate email, which is just email.apk, the other is the 'regular' email app which is socialhub.apk.
I would recommend not removing anything to do with IM, Talk, or basically any Google services, some of them are required for basic phone operations, and removing them caused me alot of trouble when I first started messing with the 'insides' of this phone and didn't know what I was doing.
I don't know what 'Data Usage' is called, but it is one of the Verizon apps; I think it may be part of 'My Verizon' app.
Above all that, if you are still on a Rom with .odex files, I would recommend flashing a deodexed Rom first (there are many available that are already plenty debloated, Nuckin and EC07 clean are both good starting points), and then if you feel more debloating is necessary, go from there.
I think you're right about the data widget being a part of myverizon.apk. And yes, I've already removed email.apk (corporate email) so you're right there also.
As for deodexed ROMS, I've used every custom ROM ever created for this phone and run into issues with gps not locking when doing so. Therefore, I stick with stock DL17. Even stock EC03 and EC07 give me gps issues.

Yes and no. When you remove it you will get a constant/repeating FC error. When that happens just pull the battery (the FC repeats so fast, that there is no other way to turn the phone off) and reboot and everything should be fine.
At least that was my experience when I removed it using TiB.
Btw, yes I've tried the gps fix. It doesn't do anything.

I noticed that the drm service (omadrmserviceconfig to be exact) is automatically turned on at booting on Froyo just like it did on Eclair.
Has anyone figured out if they fixed the battery draining issue for DRM in Froyo?

I wouldn't uninstall it. it turned out to be the root of some crazy problems I was having. But I do kill the process pretty much every time I boot.

It looks like the DRM service is draining the battery in Froyo like in Eclair.
I'm getting better battery life after disabling the service.
I'm surprised that nobody brought this up in a separate thread.
EDIT: I guess the thread mentioned above by decalex IS about this exact issue... sorry, missed that.
I've also heard from someone that deleting those apk's related to DRM will cause problemsin Froyo,
so I think it's better off just preventing the service from starting.
So I tried using the Startup Cleaner 2.0 app from the Market to disable the DRM service.
At first it seems to be working well, but after a while the omadrmserviceconfig starts up again.
Deleted the Startup Cleaner 2.0 app as soon as I found that out.
For the moment, I'm just disabling the DRM service manually (Settings -> Applications -> Running Services)
every time I do a reboot.
Anyone have any suggestion on automatically preventing the DRM service from starting?
BTW, thanks for your replies guys.

I'm on 2.1 still but I've been using startup auditor free from the market to stop this process at startup. It only allows you to block 5 apps with the free version but it has been working for me ever since I installed it.
I used to disable the DRM service every time I rebooted but eventually I stopped because I got sick of doing it and my battery performance did not seem to take a hit. I am leaving it enabled on Froyo as well and get good battery life. Maybe the DRM bug only effects some phones.

This seems to be the case. There was no noticeable decrease in battery performance on my phone in DI18 and Froyo.
(I've posted this reply before on a similar thread, but I thought I'd share my 2 cents with you here...)
You're not the only one running into this issue.
I ended up rooting my Epic to get rid of all the sprint bloatware and what-not. Everything seemed to be going smooth from the stock standpoint. I removed Samsung Media hub first. Rebooted the phone and noticed nothing bad. Played around with the setup like that for a few days with no problems.
I next got rid of both the DRM service .apk's that were still running even after I got rid of the media hub... and then the problems started. For the first couple days I noticed DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED battery life and EXTRAORDINARY performance so I imagined what I did was a good thing: WRONG! A few days later, I noticed that if I assigned a sound to a notification or a ringtone *from the SD card*, that it would not work. I couldn't play sounds anymore and instead whenever I went to adjust the volume with said notes/tones selected, the Sound_service would crash.
However, I'm the only person I knew before now who has reported this issue so I'm sure there's not a lot of hubob to fix it. Every Epic is built different. Same parts or not. It's a mass-manufactured phone and each one will have its own quirks. There's my 2 cents.

I've noticed the freezing in the built-in apps, but when I use third party apps to mix and crossfade tracks (PartyMixer) or just play music and videos (MixZing), they don't freeze.
It still makes me wonder though, why a system service that's not running doesn't crash the system, but uninstalling it does. Why should it make a difference if the service isn't being accessed? Stupid...
Whatever. I've just been disabling it on every reboot. Batt life is a little better, but still batt. life is *max* when I uninstalled all DRM crap.

I think DRM = Digital Rights Management. It is some kind of security service that is tied to the Market and anything Media related (on the Epic). You should get Titanium or Bloat Freezer from the Market and just freeze it. Don't delete or uninstall it.

I was able to fix the app by doing the following (seems the trust store got screwed up with the new release):
Grab all the certs from the bank of america cert chain (I used openssl, you could probably use something else):
openssl s_client -connect www.bankofamerica.com:443 -showcerts
Grab each of the trust certs (3 total) and put them in files ending in .crt
IE: cert1.crt, cert2.crt, cert3.crt (you could also create a pkcs12 out of 'em if you are inclined to do so).
This is likely the problem with other apps noted in this thread.
Place the files into internal storage download directory. Then go to Settings -> Location & Security -> Creential storage -> Install from internal phone storage.
Use: Certificate Manager and you should see your 3 available certs. Add them and then reboot the phone.
----
After the above procedure, I was able to log in using the BofA app.
Maybe same would work with other banking apps as well.

Did you read the rest of that thread?
It didn't work for anybody else as far as I saw when I read through a different thread with the same content yesterday, and someone had a post about the certs and why this didn't work.
Also, this was right below what you copied and pasted from there:
"this didnt work for me for some reason, but when i did a brute force approach of getting all verisign certs, I was all set.
I just tried this on my phone and got both Bank of America and American Express apps to work again.
I ended up exporting all Verisign and GT certificates in .crt format using my Firefox browser, copying them to my Dropbox account (emailing them should be fine too) and installing them one by one on the phone. You need to reboot your phone after installing the certificates...
You can also figure out which certificates you need by clicking on the padlock or company name in the browser's URL bar "

Ah thank you. I copied the gsp.config over, lets see if it works....
EDIT: Nope, a no go on the weather ticker. I can't even open it.
Are you on a stock ROM or one of the manymodded ROMs? the only reason it wouldn't open would be if someone deleted the app or if your ticker is forever "locked"which I have seen before....
Sent from my SCH-I400 using xda premium
I'm using Nuckins ROM. I don't think the ticker is locked, because I can still open my Text messages via the ticker bar. Just the weather thingymabobber won't come up, and the only way I can refresh it is by manually going into the weather ticker settings and clicking Refresh. It doesn't even seem to refresh automatically every 3 hours, like it is set to do.
I'm not sure if Nuckin's ROM has deleted the app or not, but if it has how can I get it back? ALSO... Before this ROM I was using THIS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203597 ROM by pastorbennett and the weather ticker OPENED but wasn't updating with it.
I know at one point on an older flash I was using TI and deleted some essential apps for the entire ticker section without knowing it. They're have very vague names. Reflashing would definitely fix the issue, if that's something you're willing to do.
Reflashing what? I've already experimented with 2 different ROMS. First time I had EC03/pastorbennetts ROM and this time I have EC07/Nuckin's ROM.... problems with both and the weather ticker. However, slightly different problems. With EC03 I could open the weatherbug app by clicking on the weather icon, but I couldn't refresh it not even manually. This time, with EC07 I can refresh it manually but that's about it. I can't open the Weatherbug app and I don't think it's refreshing on its own either. (Although it could be, I'm just having a hard time telling since I can't open the APP and see what time it updated.)
Plus, I've reflashed both of those more than once with the same issue.
EDIT: Unless you mean to reflash stock, then flash the ROM?
EDIT2: I think I've already reflashed stop after this anyway....
EDIT3: Well, I tried to manually go into my applications and open Weatherbug and it's giving a Force Close Error. >.< I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it, same issue.
Best advice I could give is to go into <2e> then open CwM (red seems to work nicely) wipe cache wipe data factory reset then reflash the EC07_clean! This ROM fixed most problems for me and its a simple quick flash. Then you can update to whatever ROM you've been wanting to use. The entire ticker-stuffs has worked flawlessly for me on the EC07 clean so I recommend that. It was a problem I was having too since rooting my i400.
Okay so now that my phone is unbricked, haha... I'm having my lovely WB ticker problem again. Except this time, the program opens when I click the ticker BUT I can't refresh it manually with the refresh icon. Any idea why or how it can be fixed? lol
Funny, I just started having the problem where the ticker icon doesn't open the app.

If you really want to be secure, you can use an app that backs up your contacts to SD card (plenty non rooted ones on the Market) and then do a factory reset.
You can also just remove your email account, there is an option under "Accounts and Sync" located in Settings.
I don't think they will be looking at your email though, but I understand your privacy.

Not to my knowledge their isnt. You will probibly have to go into Settings>Privacy>Factory Reset and that will wipe your phone back to original but you will lose your apps and MMS. There are ways to back those up as stated ^^^^ but as far as you email and contacts. those are backed up through Gmail. Also from what ive noticed you cant just delete your gmail account off your phone.... Well at least mine wont let me. you can unsync it but then can easily check the box if they wanted too. Good Luck

This is way off topic but i noticed in your sig marcussant that Sprint updating isnt working? is that why my phone says error when tring to update my PRL?
PS. sorry to OP for going off topic
as far as I can tell, the issue with simply removing the google account is that one can't do that unless there's also another google account linked to the phone. in my case, contacts, email, market, etc. are all linked to one account, so the phone won't allow me to delete it. I would imagine creating a replacement account would work, but I can't be bothered. the simple fix I found was to change my gmail password so that the gmail app can no longer sync. now my inbox is empty on the Epic and that's really all I wanted.
There is an app in the android market called app protector plus. It allows you to lock any app you desire. It requires the person to use a pin or pattern password to gain access. It will set you back $1.50 but is well worth it.

But if it's just linked to the phone lock that won't work for him. You have to give them the password when you give them the phone so they can work on it.
I brought my phone in for gps issues back with ec05 and all they did was a factory reset.
Make sure you tell them you don't want it reset! That's is sprints goto plan with a phone is to reset it and go from there.
i'd really think of throughing cwm on quick, making a nandroid, odin to stock ec05, let it update to ei22 see if the issue is still there, (I'm sure it will be) then bring it to them. When they can't fix it you can quickly reroot it and restore your backup.
If you can't or just won't back it up fully try "my backup" in the market and backup what you can. Trust me, if you hand them that phone they will reset it first thing they try.
This app is separate from the phone lock pattern. It only locks the applications you set to lock out.

And since your running stock, don't worry about it, sprint already knows everything you do on your phone, e-mail, data, you name it, through CarrierIQ. Your data speeds are slow, and your gps doesn't work because sprint is so busy using it to look through your phone and see where you are.

I've actually done all this...I was rooted and running ROMs for months. There wasn't any real data speed improvement and battery life was lackluster with most of the ROMs, so I flashed back around a month ago in order to be able to bring the phone into Sprint. I've just been dragging my feet on it. Also, the GB I'm running is from the flashed update made available here, not the OTA.

Next time freeze the apps instead of deleting them if you don't know what it is you are doing. It will save you a lot of trouble. And the small amount of space you can create deleting apps isn't worth the trouble.
