Google and Motorola and AT&T have partnered to bring quick and latest updates to the Atrix for 18 months past release date! That means we'll be getting all os updates between now Sept. 2012!
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
In 18 months this phone is going to hopelessly old and outdated, no matter what software the release.
And I think that statement refereed to new phones.
There's another thread talking about this already. The answer is that it's not guaranteed. This only applies to NEW devices being released. Since the Atrix was release a couple of months back, this doesn't apply.
In 18 months it will be running the same version as brand new devices released during that time.

NOT TRUE! Watch it again, he said "..all new phones..". I would assume that means from today on out. They also used the words "hardware has to allow the update". So speculate all you want but dont post incorrect statements like they are fact.
Yeah I started my post, had to run and didn't know there was a similar post before I hit submit.
New and capable...atrix fits that bill.

No. The Atrix doesn't. Is it capable? Probably, but it's definitely not new i.e. new and capable vs. new OR capable.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/google-clarifies-18-month-android-upgrade-program-details-far-f/
Here's an updated Engadget article. If you notice they specifically mention that this applies to new devices only. There's no guarantee ICS for the Atrix, unless Moto comes out and says it. Anyway, more clarification on this subject would be great.

Theres no reason to worry if we get it or not. If we do then great. But why are we worrying about this when we havnt even gotten gingerbread. I'll be happy with a dual core friendly OS. By the time ICS is ready we will all be upgrading or upgraded already.

I'd be willing to bet 2.3 hits early to mid June. Not known fact but given the quickness they've already released updates for the Atrix, they really have little reason to hold out on this.

Would you be referring to 2.3 Gingerbread or ICS? Although google never gave ICS an official number (AFAIK), for all we know it'll be 2.3.X. If your referring to Gingerbread, that would make sense, in theory, but as Moto got Honeycomb early, for all we know they could have gotten ICS before Google oficially announced it and they could be putting the final touches on it right now. But that is all hopeful speculation.
More likely than not we'll get ICS around July to August.
Just my 2 cents.

I bet I can have 2 kids with the same woman before we get 2 updates to the core android os.
God I hate all the naysayers always trying to be negitive. There is a very good chance that this will apply to us.
I think Atrix does fit the bill. When the SGS2 arrives on ATT ...that would be a "new" release. Does that mean GS2's hardware is that much newer than the Atrix? If the SGS2 gets these updates...I'm sure the Atrix will too...

I wouldn't get too excited. They don't even know how they are going to accomplish this yet. It's nice to see an effort from carriers and Google, but this is just something they threw together to present at I/O. There are no details.

I need to amend what I said earlier. I have done a bit more research and have come to find ICS slated for Q4 so about then we should get ICS (October maybe? A birthday preasent for me? ). We *may* see GB in th July/August mark.

Atrix hardware will clearly support it. There will be newer phones released in the next 6 months...and pretty sure the hardware won't be better than the Atrix. How many dual cores are on the market now? Moto set the bar with Atrix...upcoming phones are trying to match it or make it look "better" by overlooking their chips

I hope Gingerbread is actually released one day with source and that it will be possible to make the alterations such as removing CIQ that were done with Froyo.
Time will tell.
Its coming, samsung/sprint will not just drop all the $$ they did, and then not put out a relase
This Epic post as brought to you via Tapatalk
We will get it. The new Conquer has it and it is basically an Epic. I think they want to resolve the reboot issue that has plagued new Gingerbread releases from the start. Then they can wash their hands of the Epic and not worry about any more maintenance releases.

Not tried the leaks but it seems like the only real remaining issues are the reboots and the GPS. Can't understand why the issues exist for what's now legacy hardware, but once they fix them we will get it officially. I'm not concerned about that.

I don't blame Sammy one bit, I blame Sprint.
I could be totally wrong, but my personal opinion is if the Epic had been on say Verizon this update would have been long since finished.
Just my IMO.
I want an Epic2 so bad right now, I think the last rdf pushed me over the line I'm affraid to say...
I wish the epic2 had a keyboard. I'm probably going to hold off on getting any new phones until the next good android with a slide out keyboard. in the meantime I really wish they would put out source to our Dev's who seem to have a much better handle on debugging and let us get our cyanogen on. Hell with a good cyanogen 7 rom I probably wouldnt get a new phone for another 2-3 years.
Agreed, I mean I have to face the facts, Ill have this phone for at least 1 more year, and I'm sure longer, since Ill probably wait till the next "thing" comes out after I'm eligable for an upgrade.

I agree here. The International version has reportedly received timely updates. I don't know if they were referring to 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 or an incremental bug fix upgrade but supposedly they don't have this issue. I can't resist anymore. I went to the Sprint store and the Manager is going to hold one for me until I get there on launch day. Maybe having 2 active phones is excessive but I can't wait until my upgrade comes. Also, I am not ready to get rid of my Epic. I still love this phone.

Verizon??? The company with the last Galaxy S phone to get updated? The single carrier not to have any SIGN of the gingerbread update ever coming out for their Galaxy S phone? The carrier that believes that the Droid Charge is a suitable replacement for THE GS2? Sprint is probably the best carrier to bet on for upgrades to non "Droid" phones...

Like the title says, many devices are starting to get ICS, while this Google I/O Tab 10.1 is still stuck at 3.1. Will we ever get 3.2 or even ICS.
Cant believe they just abandoned this thing.
Might move to the transformer and never come back.

But you can flash any custom rom that is meant for the wifi only version if the tab and it will work fine...even the touchwiz ones

Sure, but if you're only going to use official ROMs, no need to be on XDA. XDA is for folks who use custom ROMs; we honestly don't care what the official firmwares do (except when we need the proprietary drivers for the camera.... ahem...).
You were at Google IO and are complaining about waiting for official updates? People there were rooting the tabs during sessions and the roms came quickly after that. It was free and little was said from them about supporting it during or after the event.
I would abandon mine for a quad core Sammy with the Wacom digitizer in the Note but until then I'll just keep flashing.

All we need is ONE version of ICS to get released, and we are all set.
It's still on par to get released sometime in the 3rd quarter, and last time I checked we're still I'm the 3rd quarter...

Phones don't suddenly stop working if you don't get some future update...
Also, it saves you money to keep it and nobody has canceled anything yet. We have an official statement saying Q3 for the Atrix's ICS update. We then have lots of speculation based on many things regarding it. So let's at least try to stick with Motorola here until they've actually not delivered on their promise.
I'm hoping there will be a new Nexus phone around the end of this year when I am finally able to upgrade. Otherwise, SGS3.

Exactly right. I've never understood this "ZOMG, no updates, must change phone now!!1!11!! eleventy !!1!11!!" logic from supposedly intelligent people. If your phone is very old, sure, I can see upgrading, but a phone that's not even two years old and has what's currently the most prolific version of Android available (Gingerbread)? A phone that, in many ways, still kicks the crap out of most (not all, but most) phones currently in the market? All because it doesn't have a version of Android that, based on what I've seen, has more than a few significant issues on many devices, issues that have been largely resolved with Jellybean (shades of every-other-Windows-release-is-crap syndrome!)? Unbelievable.
I have a better question: what will there be left to talk/worry about once Moto hits us with ICS? JB?

Just make better ROMs and Mods, and keep Atrix growing like the HTC HD2
That gs3 is a beast.. 720p 1.5ghz and 2gb ram. As I recall it lacks HDMI out but I might be wrong. My mom's got one of those after I realized it has an hd screen far and away surpassing the gs2.. plus it's got a.. I'll say lively community

I hate to be the one to say this, but you know when you go back to the root Atrix 4G section, there's a button on the right hand side that says "Search this forum", and if you select "Show posts" and type in "ZTE" and then press "Enter", you'll get around 4 pages of discussion on this topic?
As for which phone to get, a Nexus, I guess. At least if they make one with an SLCD and external storage/32GB internal... I don't really like the lower life-expectancy of AMOLED screens, and I need at least 25GB of data storage space.

The official Motorola Android Update page has been updated and it lists the VZW Xoom's Jelly Bean update as Q4 2012. It claims it'll be an upgrade to "Android 4.1.1" but I highly doubt that. I guarantee it'll be 4.1.2/JZO54K.
Owning a Verizon Xoom and a Verizon Galaxy Nexus is so frustrating from an update standpoint. Even though updates come directly from Google, Verizon's testing and approval requirement takes forever. We know Verizon had been testing the JRO03H ROM (the same 4.1.1 ROM that the WiFi-only model got) as far back as early August. Obviously they couldn't get it approved before 4.1.2 came out, so I'm sure now they're testing 4.1.2 instead. Regardless, assuming Verizon can't find anything to ***** about with the update, we should have it soon.
Once the update rolls out, I'll update the first post here with a link to the OTA file so we can all flash it manually and not have to wait.

I don't like any of the custom ROMs available for the Xoom. They are all full of customization and features that I don't need or want. Plus I get squeamish about custom kernels written by people who have little to no documentation on the hardware. The stock ROM is simple, clean, and stable. As a daily driver, it's perfect for me. Less is more.
