Can some please pose vids of snes emu running dk3, sfa3, Mario kart, metroid killer instinct
Cps2hd running sfa2/3 and marvel vs capcom.
PLEASE! Just want to see the speed
I no longer have my other phone to record video, but I've run the SNES emulator, and I can say it's definitely full speed. Honestly, with the specs of the Nexus One, there's no way the emulation would skip a beat.
Unfortunately, onscreen controls have not been.. perfected yet for the N1. :/

How are the games playing out without multitouch & hardware buttons?
i picked up nesoid and snesoid, but i am at a loss for ROM installs.
1. I have no idea what the file type is that is recognized by these 2 programs
2. I made a ROMs folder on my card, but whenever i try to switch to that folder using the 'load ROM' option, it says the folder i created doesn't exist. does this mean i have to dump everything to the cards root folder? why won't it switch to the right folder?
3. I can find ROM sites through google, but again, referring to my first point, I don't know what file type I should be putting on the phone, or where.
I have all of yongzh's emulators, and all of them run excellent. The SNES and GBA ones are the toughest of the consoles, and have a bit of audio slowdown. But otherwise, they are all perfect.
As for the key controls, depends on the console. There are a few keys that are usable, even if they are software keys. You can map console keys to the Search, Back, Volume Up, Volume Down, and Trackball Press buttons. Consoles with few buttons, like the SMS, NES, and GBC, run without problems. Consoles with more buttons have more trouble, culminating with the SNES, which has to leave some buttons unmapped. Still, they are all very playable, and I play FFVI on the SNES emulator with no problems and a grin on my face. ^_^
Hopefully multitouch development will render this problem moot.
They are a lot easier to play control wise on my G1 but they play beautifully graphics wise on the Nexus, like Ashtear said it's just a matter of the developers implementing multitouch now.
still doesn't tell me how to address my issues.
file type?
where put it?
never mind. got it.
nesoid reads .nes files.
snesoid reads .smc files
so...i got it going. however, seems like, at least on the nesoid, i can't simultaneously use the direction pad and a button makes for difficult gameplay, since so many things require being able to move/shoot or move/jump :/

yeah, in answer to this question, it blows. mario kart you can pick whether to go, or to steer, not both.
ok someone try cps2hd please with street fighter alpha 2
unfortunately, as the soft buttons are on the same capacitive screen, they can't be touched as the screen is being touched. The most fun I've been able to have is playing gradius on snesoid using flip screen mode, the trackball fo d-pad and vol up and down for a and b. it's not great.
The Developer of GameBoid should have his Nexus One by now, he said when he got he would work on multi-touch.
anyone tried the cps2 emu now?
can't you use the trackball as the d-pad?
WiiController
If you have a Wii controller laying around you can use a free app called "WiiController" instead of the on screen controls.
Makes gaming on my N1 a dream...
does cps2hd support the wiimote?
The only real way to play emulators on the Nexus one you have to:
1) play in landscape
2) put the virtual d-pad and buttons at diagonally opposite corners
This gets around the 15mm axis fusing problem the Nexus One has, but it's still not perfect. You can do running jumps in Super Mario World, for instance, but you're moreso fat fingering one response to hit two buttons rather than having 3 separate inputs so it's very unreliable.
I have SuperGNES and Snesoid, and I'd recommend the former because if you try a running jump in Snesoid it releases the y button when you release b. To have this make sense, if you're on Yoshi and you do a running jump, he sticks his tongue out when you let go of the jump because the Y button gets 'pressed' again. Far as I can tell, this doesn't happen on SuperGNES.
Just my experience. I wouldn't count on Froyo fixing it.
anyone try cps2hd yet?
Hi all,
I'm a happy HyperDroid 1.5 user. I use DPI=192, and besides the obvious bitmap scaling issues in a few games (see here for some examples), I have worse issues in a number of games that I suspect use OpenGL.
Many 3D/OpenGL games work fine (Monopoly, Carrom3D, NFS Shift, Antigen), but some seem to be unable to render textures correctly, leaving the screen either completely white, or washed out.
Examples are (all of these are unplayable):
- Blow up (menu OK, game background white, some colored blocks appear)
- Papa Stacker (menu OK, game background white, blocks are simply colored squares)
- Fruit Pirate (background white, the fruit objects simply shaded)
- Shoot U (screen all white)
- Space Physics (screen all white)
I have tried resetting DPI to 240, with no apparent change.
Is this a familar issue? If so, is there a known cause and/or fix?

Switch to my config, inside startup.txt, do the res @ 240 and inside build.pro, setup DPI to 240 as well.. it WILL work because I had exactly the same problem..

Hi all im new to the forum and have a few questions about rooting my xperia play and wondered if some of you in the know could help?...
im interested in using gingerbreak v1.20 to do the root, i have read the tutorial and understand most of it and from what i have read on the forums other XP users have had varied success.
my questions are...
1. my phone is on a vodaphone contract and im not sure if its sim locked (to that specific network) and does this effect the root?
2. my phone had some kind of update downloaded to its software from vodaphone about 1 week ago gingerbread 2.3.2 build number 3.0.A.2.184 other people with this version root ok?
3. so just to clarify i was wondering if that update ive had has hindered my chances of the rooting also if my phone being locked to a specific network (e.g vodaphone) is a problem?
4. last but not least, if my phone fails to reboot after the rooting process, how hard is it to put it back to original version? (like do i need more software to fix the failure or can i just remove the battery wait 30secs and itll be back to normal)?
i know these may seem very basic questions to u veteran rooters, but id like to get involved i just wanna have more knowledge myself before i jump in, and would appreciate your feedback, loving my xperia play and i want to improve it and not brick it
cheers in advance
I am with tmobile and also received the ota update before I rooted.
SIM lock doesn't effect root.
I can tell you that the update won't effect running Gingerbreak at all.
You shouldn't have any worries using Gingerbreak as is.
It is purely an apk and will either successfully root your device or will not.
This is the easiest method of rooting i've ever used.
I was an android n00b when I got my hero & had to go through the method of creating a gold card & reverting to an older build & flashing flashrec!
To be honest, now my play is rooted in probably won't even bother using custom roms in the future.
I did all that with my hero and am happy with the plays UI.
I just wanted root to free up more space.
I'd also recommend researching setinstalllocation2 on here.
Doing this natively installs everything to sd and is worth the time.
cheers for the speedy reply DeadlyDazza, yeah id like to remove some of the stock rubbish to free up some space i was also hoping to do a small overclock, is this possible with a basic root? using the android overclocking apps?
im still nervous about the reboot and it not coming back on :S
@DeadlyDazza did you use gingerbreak on an empty/formatted sd card like described in the tutorial or does it also work with a sd full of installed apps? ( i really dont want to delete all my apps and data)
cheers covux
I have a fair bit of installing custom Roms on Android phones and i can honestly say this -
Unless you are rooting the phone in order to help develop custom roms and tweaks there really is no point in rooting it at the current moment.
Gingerbread is excellent at managing apps and the Xperia Play is designed so that games run independently from your homescreen.
"Trimming the fat" will offer almost zero benefit at the moment.
My advice is to wait a while, let the experts put together some custom Roms and gain access to the Kernel, allowing us to overclock.
Until then, i do not see a reason to root at all.
Unless you just, like me, wants to get rid of bloatware and ads in various apps and other benefits with root access
+1 on liking the XP UI and don't want to flash and mod this phone as I did with my HTC desire hd
If you just want that, root it now and keep your locked bootloader and enjoy the XP as it is
Regards Dousan...
Rooting does have many benefits, which mine was to free up more space on a device that, although is designed for gamers, seems to fall very short of.
Also to use root enabled apps such as cache mate.
Apart from the space issues, which have now been resolved by rooting & setinstalllocation2, I'm more than happy with my Xperia Play.
Will I be saying the same in 6 months? Probably not, I'll probably be wanting a fresher feel.
But that depends on how much support SE give the Play (my last device was the Hero & HTC was very slow with their support).
In answer to the question about running Gingerbreak with blank sd.
I had a spare 8gig that I formatted & used.
I didn't want to risk losing any data & couldn't be bothered to back up the 14gig on my card.
Although I have heard a few people say that running Gingerbreak is completely safe & won't erase any data.
Didn't erase anything on my sdcard when I rooted my XP, would still recommend a backup before using gingerbreak I was just lazy and went ahead without doing a backup. Did one today...
Regards Dousan...
@DeadlyDazza, @Dousan thanks for the info, i think i will also use a spare blank sd.

How exactly?
Whenever I navigate home away from a running game (such as to check a text) my XP shuts down the game.

I read in one of the reviews/specs for the phone that the homescreen and gaming operate independently meaning that when you play games, the homescreen sits in another part of memory or works in another processing thread or something.
The point being made was that whatever app you have open in the homescreen, won't make your games stutter or lag when you are playing them.
Maybe an expert can clarify this.
As for your problem, i can say that something is wrong with your setup for your games to be unloaded out of memory and shutdown when you navigate to the homescreen.
I would imagine you have an appkiller that is setup to close all running apps when you navigate to the homescreen.
I can't stress the importance of not using app killers with the gingerbread o/s. They are not needed, they will not improve performance of the phone, they will not make you battery last longer.
In fact, app killers will make your battery last SHORTER on gingerbread, since you will be using alot more processing power to load and unload them.
I don't use any app-killers.
Do you navigate to your homescreen with the back button, the home button or holding the home button and selecting a new icon?
Ok I have just performed 3 tests.
1) Emulator test - had tiger genesis running playing sonic 2. Hit the home button and navigated instantly to home screen. Tiger genesis happily sits in the notification bar. Navigating back to tiger genesis sees it exactly as before I left it.
2) Playstation pocket game crash bandicoot - loaded the game and hit the hom
e key. Same as above. The game sits in the notification bar and returns to the exact state you left it in when you return back to it.
3) Xperia play game Backstab - loaded the game and hit the home key. The game did not sit in they notification bar, but reselecting the game from the xperia play menu put the game onscreen at the exact position I left it from.
I can not re-create your situation where navigating to the homescreen makes the game unload from memory.
I made his post on my xperia play btw and performed each test while making this post. My browser doesn' t even unload from memory.

Usually just by tapping the home button. I only hold home for hotswitching & only navigate back to quit.

So does it only happen with a certain game? All games?
What about apps?
I find it hard to believe that hitting the home key unloads anything from memory unless you have changed some major settings.
Using Xperia Play games.
If I go to home when playing or paused the game unloads.
Not changed any settings at all.

Ok try this and tell me what happens.
- Slide the phone open
- Load Bruce Lee
- Get into an actual fight
- Hit the home key
- Slide the phone down
- Slide the phone up
- Load Bruce Lee
After doing this, my game has paused, but is exactly where i left it. The game did not unload, and therefore did not reload. It was exactly as i left it.
If yours does not do the same, and you havn't changed any settings or are running any app killers, then i suggest you make sure you have the latest revision of firmware and try again.
Bruce Lee stays in memory ok.
Star Battalion & Dungeon Defenders quit as soon as you hit home.

I can confirm that Star Battalion stays in memory after i hit the home screen on my phone.
It shows identical behaviour as Bruce Lee.
When you hit home, and reload the game, the game has paused itself and when you unpause, the game is exaclty as when you left it.
Can't confirm Dungeon Defenders behavious since i do not own it.
If you continue experiencing problems, i would suggest you have faulty memory and request a handset replacement.
Hello could someone please tell me the best PSX emulator for the Xperia Play and give detailed instructions on setting it up so that it runs smoothly? I have tried one, FPse, but the sound does not work properly. psx4droid doesn't work at all [the latest version 3.0.6,] it just keeps asking me to force close when I try to load a rom. Please give the name of the emulator and the version and how to set it up for the Xperia Play.
the best emulator so far is FPSe, check on the Apps & Themes section, there is a sticky with all playable roms.
FPse.
Mine works perfect. No sound or framerate choppiness at all.
How did you set up FPse ? Mine has poor sound, it doesn't seem to be playing all the sound only some parts.
Solved the sound issues. So in FPse i went into "system" and unchecked Mdec Acceleration, Gte Acceleration and HLE mode. Now I hear all the audio though at some points the audio slows down a bit.

I have -
Country - USA (i live in the UK though but i d/l USA games. This might make a difference to smoothness as the timing of the games is 50 mhz or 60 mhz and could account for some choppy sound)
Mdec - On
Gte - On
Fast Booting - On
HLE - Off
Boost Mode - Off
No Sound - Off
Spu Sync - Off
Framelimiter - On
Frameskip - None
Screen Filtering - Off
Screensize - Full Screen
Fast Overlay - Off
Screen Orientation - Landscape (turning off auto in theory could speed emulation up)
Print fps - Off
Invert colors - Off
Some games didnt work very well. Tony Hawks 2 had very glitchy graphical errors (or might of been THPS 1, cant remember), and Colin Mcrae 2 grinded to a halt.
Here is what i have tried though -
Time Crisis (touch screen as light gun, dam awesome)
Demolition Derby
Rampage Universal Tour
Point Blank (touch screen as light gun, dam awesome)
Strider 2
Die Hard Trilogy
All of them run flawlessly. No graphical glitched. Now sound stuttering. (and i mean none at all, not even a tiny hiccup).
I have rooted my phone, taken away lots of bloatware. Maybe this helps, maybe not.
N64 emulator sound skips for me alot. fpse none though.
Hey man mine is rooted also, you said you took off bloatware, could you go into detail? I want to take off stuff but I do not want to "brick" the phone because I don't know how I would get it back working.
Check out this thread for removing bloatware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046699
Man I don't think it's actually possible to get this damn emulator playing the sound properly, it keeps slowing down messing up the sounds. sucks man.
Sorry to bump an old thread..

No you don't need to be rooted.
If you're looking to use FPSe, here's how to get playing your games:
1.) Buy and install FPSe.
2.) Open up the app and it will ask you to load a BIOS. Google is your one and only friend when searching for the PSX BIOS.
3.) After that, you can load your game. So rip your own .iso from games you own. Or again, Google is your friend for this.
4.) Then you can load the game and stay playing.
You might have to change a few settings to get the game and emulator performing better, that's basically trial and error.

For instance what games are you trying to play? Have you tried using software repair and sometimes games can bug sometimes when moved to microsd
Let me know what you're trying to play as I haven't had many problems myself running games such as Titanfall Assault, Albion Online, RSCRevolution, Real Racing 3 etc etc
