With DL17 what? Another next obvious question: if you are on 2.2. (btw ec03 or ec07) why do you have dl17 anything?

[Q] I Rooted 2.2 Froyo on my HTC evo, WiFi Tether apps not working

i purchased the phone with 2.1, didnt root it... did the OTA udate to froyo 2.2.... on august 27th i read that the root for OTA stock froyo was created on the 26th... performed the root for 2.2 successfully... however... none of the versions of the WiFi tether app for root users are working... once i start tethering, no devices can pick up the signal n if it does i get a messege on my laptop saying that there is no internet access... please help... if its a quick fix please PM me cause im always busy n i barely check the forum.... thank you in advance
Because it doesn't work, sprint did something special for it not to work, I forget what it is
you try this one?
I had the same issue. I typed out the fix on another thread. Basically you have to use the ruu to go back to 2.1 then find the rooted 2.2 stock img with recovery and apply that from the updated 2.2 root guide. This will fix your problems and work in any of the roms
afterward.

[Q] Netfilter Kernal + OTA updates w/ Root

Alright guys, a few more rookie questions from this kid and I'll stop bothering the piss out of you
First off, I've recently rooted, and I have a few questions. I'm running a stock rom, and I rooted using the one click root but other than that, I haven't done anything major to my phone because I'm sort of lost in the process on a few things.
So, number one, I keep reading about the new update, I think it was DI18 or something to that effect? What I'm curious to know is, am I going to get these updates OTA with root, and, if so, will it remove root or am I fine as long as I have a stock rom? I just need to know if I need to avoid updating the phone OTA or not worry about it.
Also, I wanted to know how to get a netfiltered enabled kernel. i've been trying to use Wireless-Tether and I don't get any errors, just no UL or DL numbers and it doesn't do anything to my computer.
I posted a few threads ago that I am completely new to Android and such and have been running WinMo for the last 4 or 5 years. I'm trying to get used to all of this and after running with my HTC Raphael for the last year and a half I'm finally upgrading and this is a whole new world.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to everyone in the community! I really appreciate all of it. Oh, and for the record, I've looked around for a few hours on the net trying to figure out these things but I can't seem to find any answers. It seems like all of this is common knowledge for everyone else, but I've been running with Android for less than 2 weeks now. Thanks all.
Dig Life!

I seem to be having the same problem you are with wireless tethering. So if you figure out a fix please let me know.
We don't need a special kernel for wireless tether. Wirelss tether for android pre15 works fine for me. Ota updates will remove root, but so far it seems our same root method is fine with 2.2.1 updates (dk28) .

Isn't it true though that some custom kernels don't support tethering? For example, I run Andromeda DI18 and when I try to tether it says its not supported by my kernel.
Well, not sure. The only ones I have run are mix up and fluff. Both worked for me.

GingerBreak

anyone had a chance to look at this and try it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
I've heard it works but I have no need to try it
It appears that a few Droid X owners have successfully used this exploit, according to some of the responses in the link you provided. I'll be interested to see if this will work on the final Ginberbread OTA (keeping fingers crossed)!
I just tried it and it works. No problems arose.
That's definitely good news if the OTA comes out and it's got important tweaks that .588 doesn't have.

If wireless tether works for you then go ahead and use it, Verizon can only track the tbh hack. Some people have not been able tto get it to work

So that hack should be removed post haste or what?
Trust me it works fine on my droid x and i been looking to root for a while and had no luck, but this works!!

As long as you don't use it there will not be any problems
Just SBF'd to .340 and used the official update to .588, GingerBreak worked fine except I'm having issues getting Titanium Backup to recognize it has root. I get the prompt to allow it, but the app still says it doesn't have it. Other root apps, like adfree and autokiller memory work just fine. Hmf.
Scratch that. Just went back into TB, updated busybox and it's right as rain. Two thumbs up!
Works great for my DX, however, I need to un-root it and I've tried several ways from other forums and I am not having any luck.
Does anyone know the procedure to un-root for GingerBreak?
Edit: I don't have Gingerbread installed either, I'm just running 2.2.1 - I don't know if this makes a difference when trying to un-root this. If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it. I've been scouring trying to find a solution and I've had no luck yet. I've tried rooting then unrooting when the one-click program and that isn't helping me either. Any suggestions??
I don't know if this can be answered but it doesn't hurt to ask. How come the ota cannot be rooted but the P3droid version of GB can be rooted? If its the same thing then what is the difference on why it cant be rooted?
Just going to guess here (this is speculation not fact) but I would assume that p3 being as skilled as he is was able to reopen the exploits used to root that motor/verizon closed in the ota.

yea, what chbennet said sounds about right.
it just has to be rooted before it's put onto the phone. once on the phone, it cant be done.

Wireless Tether and Official Gingerbread, does it work?

I'm running 2.2 Fission because Wireless Tether for Root Users still works (at least version 2.08-pre1 ***EXPERIMENTAL*** still does). I tried the GB leaks and various roms before coming back to 2.2 Fission because tether didn't work. Has anyone updated to 2.3 and had their tether work after rooting again?
Solution: The only thing I've found working is using the CM7 Rom and Barnacle.
I use ver. 2.0.5-pre14.apk and it works fine.
You've taken the official update that dropped yesterday and rooted? Not on a previous leak right?

I updated my Droid2 with yesterdays official verizon update Gingerbread 2.3.3 and wish I hadn't.
Wireless Tether now says Unable to start tethering. Is your device 'rooted'?
Still looking for some clarification on this as well. I know the new update can be rooted but my girlfriend currently uses EasyTether and I know that will be broken with the official, stock unrooted update. I'd like to see if there's a wired or wifi tether that is known to work on stock rooted software. I believe newer versions of Wifi Tether were tweaked to work on the Droid X with similar restrictions?
Try using ver 3.0

Are you using the official tether or a rooted free one? I use barnacle wifi tether and it's worked on every ROM I've used. Just confirmed it works on the OTA GB with CM7 from the latest nightly.
Dumb Question
Sorry if this is such a newb question.
My DROID2 is rooted, but this morning I updated with the official Verizon Gingerbread update. Now my Wireless Tether doesn't work with my Ipad anymore.
Do I need to re-root and then download a new wireless tether?
Thanks,

Yes, you need to re-root. The below post has instructions and the file, it's a one click root for Droid 3 but it works on our phone. I just used it today.

Which tethers working for you? Barnacle is no longer working properly on my Droid 2, and others get directed to the Verizon site.

Can you be specific? What is not working about barnacle? Sometimes I have had to enable then disable wifi before using it because there can be an error where the wifi manager interferes. I just booted it up and it's working.

I read thru the solution you linked to and it seems to be for Droid 3 with Windows.
Is there a solution for just plain old Droid 2 (not global) and using a 2011 Macbook?
Doesn't seem the question has been answered definitively, and the thread is derailing into a how to obtain root. Yes, I'm refering to tethering like with wireless tether for root users, not mobile hotspot addon to your plan. I couldn't get tethering to work with the leaked, rooted versions of GB, as they seemed to have patched unauthorized tethering on those versions. I'm wondering if this is still true on the ota, or official, GB.

The droid 3 one click root works for almost any motorola phone, including the unreleased bionic.
As for the platform, can't help you with a mac =(. Next time you're better off with a PC of some kind. Cheaper too.
Deciding to just throw caution into the wind, I Titanium Backup'd my apps, made a backup through Clockwork Mod, then wiped data and cache, then rebooted into stock recovery, wiped data and cache there, then rebooted holding the up button on the keyboard to get the bootloader, then SBF'd, then OTA'd the GB, then rooted using
http://www.psouza4.com/droid3/#root
Then installed
wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk
from this site
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
and got it to connect and transmit data, but got the verizon redirect everytime.
So I rebooted the phone, and bam it worked. Didn't change any frequency channel, just a reboot. It may be noted that my laptop couldn't connect to AndroidTether, but as soon as I changed the SSID to what I had it on my 2.2 Froyo Rom, it hooked up right away. However I wasn't able to recreate this success and after several hours of beating my head against the wall, I gave up and just went back to Fission 2.2 and stopped. Couple days later I SBF'd, retook the OTA, flashed CM7 and Barnacle seems to work.
Try barnacle tether, it's free and on the market (for those getting redirected)
EDIT: Confirmed with my laptop just now. Barnacle works great, does not redirect to any site at all.
I would try CM7, especially if you just got the OTA update. It's been getting rave reviews and is amazing on battery life. Droidforums has all the info.

No and please do a bit more reading with reference to the EL30 update. You're on a custom rom, the upgrade will fail to install by design. Allowing it to fail the install will prevent the nagging update notices.
There is a Q&A sub forum for questions.
If your not EL30 when you update you will loose the hotspot hack. You need to flash the update EL30 hotspot hack. As of now it works only on 3g. There is a pre rooted deodex EL30 rom. You would have to remove the bloatware yourself.
The mods need to be updated to EL30. So no extended menu. Scroll status ect.

As soon as you Odin to stock to try and get the update your hotspot is gone anyway.

You will lose it if you update to EL30. But there is already a port, although 4G isn't working:

That's what I thought. I did go ahead and let it install/fail and do a battery pull. I'm finally happy with the rom and kernal I have and will wait a bit before upgrading to something else. Thanks all for the helpful tips. And for those who told me to read...i did and just wanted to reconfirm with those that are WAY more knowledgeable than I. Mods feels free to close thread.
