Is there any solution to this? I've heard it is a software issue, that they were going to fix in the Mango update...
I've updated my phone to the latest firmware, but I still have those issues..
Same here. The color banding is still present even on Mango.
Colour banding on Mango is only evident for apps, throughout the os we have use of 32-bit colour palette. It's up to the developer to use it. Some do, some don't.
The image quality looks really terrible.
The contacts, gallery, on the Zune, everywhere.
But before NoDo everything was fine.

Hi everyone,
I would be thankful for any help concerning the following issue: the camera on my Blackstone started behaving strangely, a few ROM flashes ago. It produces very low quality photos (see attachments). Besides, immediately after taking the photo, when the preview is displayed, the photo (or its preview) has a pronounced greenish tint. That tint is not part of the actual photo, it only appears during preview. I tried all sorts of tweaks, from Montecristoff's Tweak HD, all sorts of camera settings. Nothing worked, the same low quality, the same greenish tint. I even tried a bunch of unrelated, cooked, ROMs, with no result. The photos appear as if taken with a primeval 640x480 webcam. The same applies to videos, they are as crappy as anything and the framerate is absolutely awful.
I must point out that a while ago the camera was working flawlessly (check out the last photo in the attachements, with the guy dressed like Pamela Anderson in Baywatch, now that was quality !)
For reference: I'm using USPL to flash the ROMs, I tried it under Dutty's latest 6.5 ROMs, latest EnergyROM, now I'm with the latest Topix, the behaviour is the same.
It is normal I guess, blackstone is capturing in the dark with very poor quality, and I have greenish tint (in dark photos only) at preview as well. If its anormal, then I am asking for help too
Rom: topix 3.1.2
Check ISO setting,
I forgot my ISO on 100 and images were just as you describe even the daylight photos.
Put it on Auto and try again. Also try to keep it stable as much as possible.
Hope this helps
When I browse my gallery which shows my picasa albums, and select a photo, it will show it fullscreen but then it won't actually load the higher resolution version. This happens for only certain photos.
Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so how did you fix it?
Thanks!
Try 'Multi Touch Gallery' from the Market
Wait for 2.2, known issue that's being worked on.
Android 2.1 introduced the new 3d gallery but at the cost of color depth, they had to decrease the color depth from 24 bit to 16 bit.... the issue is known to google and it will be fixed in the next update...

Is there confirmation on that fix ?
Hi everyone, this is my first post, I'm not sure if it's been posted yet. I'm a photographer and I do not use the camera on my HD2 because I just import my photos to the phone so I can display samples of my work to potential clients. The sharpness of my photos when displayed on the device was the main driving point for me purchasing this phone. One thing I noticed however, since flashing my photo to Windows Phone 7, my pictures are not sharp at all anymore. I just loaded a picture on to my friend's WinMo 6.5 HD2, and there is a drastic difference. I've seen posts about the camera taking blurry pictures, but I haven't seen any that just indicated general blurriness on the screen. Is there a fix for this or will I have to give up my WP7?
That's odd, my transferred pix are excellent, maybe you should reload WP7? Not much help I'm sorry but it doesn't take long to reinstall...
what res are the pictures?
I had the same problem but it seemed to only happen with photos that I transferred to the phone. I never found a fix, though I do not think it is a resolution problem with WP7. The issue might exist in the file transfer itself; perhaps a Zune issue? Anyway, I never found a solution so I'm back on 6.5.
Try this:
In the Zune software, go to
Settings > Phone > Pictures and Video
and set "Image Quality" to "Original"
I tried the settings in Zune and those settings were already selected. The resolution is 3744 x 5616, but it doesn't matter the photo size, they all still aren't crisp as they were before.
try changing them to 1024x1024, maybe wp7 is lowering them automatically because of how large they are
even the ones i had at 950 are blurry, no matter what photo I load into it...same result.
**Update**
Since my last post, I have flashed back to 6.5, loaded some photos on. Image resolution is far superior. Loaded WP7 back on, [a different ROM], and still photos are still not a sharp. Is it possible that the photos do not render as well in WP7 as they did in 6.5?
strange, i use both zune for pc and windows phone connector for mac to transfer my 12mp photos from my cannon450d and they are reasonably sharp for a screen with limited pixels.
Even my photos from facebook look reasonably good (not much difference on the small screen to be honest)
Yeah for me, whether it's from my Canon 5D Mark II, or my 50D, same problem. At this point, I just won't load any photos on the device! It sucks because my main reason for purchasing this phone was photos, and also that ability to put different ROMS on it.

Email a photo to yourself, and save it on the phone. See it works that way.
It may be that the stock wp7 picture viewer doesn't display them as sharp. Maybe you can find another photo viewing app in app store and see if that makes any difference.
Hey All,
I have experienced an unusal bug on my device after NoDo.
Pictures are showing what appears to be banding.
More info here:
http://wmpoweruser.com/has-the-htc-update-caused-some-windows-phones-to-go-16-bit/
Would you please let me know if anyone else experiences this?
I don't think it is due to NoDo. Our super AMOLED screens are rumored to be not true 32-bit but rather a suspected 16-bit. Before my NoDo update, the HTC hub suffered from banding too.
This is nothing new for SAMOLED screens. They are inherently like it.
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/11/17/the-problem-with-super-amoled-screens-nasty-color-banding/
It's due to Microsoft's optimizations for a better performance with the interface. Anyway there are some items that are 24-bit since 7004 to current NoDo 7392:
In pictures hub: pictures at fullscreen
In Zune hub: videos at fullscreen (YouTube and others are third party apps that are restricted to 16-bit)
Anyway if AMOLED's were not true 24-bit displays it would be easy to emulate it with dithering, remember most of LCD's are actually 16-bit or even 8-bit and the 24-bit color is obtained by dithering techniques. My laptop's dithering is easily perceptible at certain view angles with some colors (a fast moving set of 45ยบ lines).
i have this issue too. i didn't pay attention to this, so i didn't notice it just after the nodo update, but now, i did some tests (wmbench) and i can clearly see color banding. whell, i'm really dissapointed in microsoft. this is really bad. will mango fix this 100%?
Is this bug causing lockscreen wallpapers to show incorrectly? My lockscreen wallpaper looks awfull when I lock the screen anywhere except in the Picture, Marketplace, and Music + Video apps.
Whenever I lock/unlock the screen while I'm in the Picture, Marketplace, and Music + Video apps, the wallpaper looks great...
activating 32 bits color would definitely slow down the device, especially the start screen.
Mango fixes this completely (at least the beta build does). I've had the problem ever since 7004. The screen is really beautifull now!
I love my omnia 7 but I have noticed if someone rings me and I have their picture on my phone it shows up blurry on the ringing screen
I used a picture this evening which was stored on my phone on someones contact (took with camera) and it still shows blurry
anyone any idea's have to solve this ?? I know its only cosmetic but its damn annoying
i have this problem too. my contacts have pictures from windows live and facebook account and they allways show up blurry, when taking a call.
Are you sure the facebook photos show up blurry too? The main problem here is because of Gmail, which uses a pathetic resolution for the contacts (96x96?) and therefore, when you have GMail sync enabled, all the photos are replaced with lousy low-res versions, immaterial of whether you uploaded a hi-res version in the first place.
This has been discussed on several threads in GMail support, *WITHOUT* a solution:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=166e27ae27e71c7a&hl=en
Are you sure your WL and FB contacts are not showing their GMail pics? (I think WP7 defaults to facebook when available).
If GMail is not your problem, you might want to just do some removal/addition of the FB/WL accounts to see if it by chance fixes the problem.
i don't use gmail, so the issue is caused by something else.
I have noticed that images from facebook are displayed at decent (sharp) quality but if I allocate my own custom photos from the phone or taken by the phone camera, they appear blurry if a Google Contacts account is used.
If you use the Windows Live option, the image appears a lot nicer. In fact, I only did this test after reading this post and i'm going to deviate from using Google Contact and instead move them to Windows Live! Pictures are very nice.
Also, this affects the tiles if you pin the contact to the home screen.

I previously had a LG Optimus 7 and this issue was there too--so unlike the Wiki states, this doesn't look to be an Omnia 7-only problem.
Anyway, I'll consider moving my contacts to Windows Live and see if that makes a difference.
EDIT: I recently updated to Mango--the pictures were still blurry. I re-added the contact pictures from photo albums (still saving them as Google contacts) and now the pictures are sharp! So it looks the this problem was fixed in Mango?

I have seen that even if you choose a photo you shot from your Omnia, because of the google sync, it gets downscaled. I have heard that people have succeeded by disabling the photo sync on google (don't recall how), but it did not work for me.
BTW, have you updated to Mango beta or the RTM? And, is it worth the effort (assuming it's not too easy to apply the official update after this upgrade).
Thanks!

Yes you're totally right, Google Sync downscaled it. Damn.
I'm not sure the difference between the Mango beta and the RTM (I bought my Omnia unlocked and unbranded). I followed Duck's instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203948
Personally, I didn't have to do the firmware flash so it was very painless. In fact, it was no harder than running "update.bat" then updating the phone threw Zune. Considering almost no effort it's definitely worth it. Mango is faster, IE9 is much better, some of the additional features are nice (some multitasking, alphabet app-menu, etc).
I'd say, if you don't need to flash the firmware it's totally worth it (only took me 10 minutes). If you have to flash, I might reconsider (I have a lot of game saves, etc. that would be annoying to lose).
