Omnia 7 16bit bug after NoDo - Omnia 7 General

Hey All,
I have experienced an unusal bug on my device after NoDo.
Pictures are showing what appears to be banding.
More info here:
http://wmpoweruser.com/has-the-htc-update-caused-some-windows-phones-to-go-16-bit/
Would you please let me know if anyone else experiences this?

I don't think it is due to NoDo. Our super AMOLED screens are rumored to be not true 32-bit but rather a suspected 16-bit. Before my NoDo update, the HTC hub suffered from banding too.

This is nothing new for SAMOLED screens. They are inherently like it.
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/11/17/the-problem-with-super-amoled-screens-nasty-color-banding/

It's due to Microsoft's optimizations for a better performance with the interface. Anyway there are some items that are 24-bit since 7004 to current NoDo 7392:
In pictures hub: pictures at fullscreen
In Zune hub: videos at fullscreen (YouTube and others are third party apps that are restricted to 16-bit)
Anyway if AMOLED's were not true 24-bit displays it would be easy to emulate it with dithering, remember most of LCD's are actually 16-bit or even 8-bit and the 24-bit color is obtained by dithering techniques. My laptop's dithering is easily perceptible at certain view angles with some colors (a fast moving set of 45ยบ lines).

i have this issue too. i didn't pay attention to this, so i didn't notice it just after the nodo update, but now, i did some tests (wmbench) and i can clearly see color banding. whell, i'm really dissapointed in microsoft. this is really bad. will mango fix this 100%?

Is this bug causing lockscreen wallpapers to show incorrectly? My lockscreen wallpaper looks awfull when I lock the screen anywhere except in the Picture, Marketplace, and Music + Video apps.
Whenever I lock/unlock the screen while I'm in the Picture, Marketplace, and Music + Video apps, the wallpaper looks great...

activating 32 bits color would definitely slow down the device, especially the start screen.

Mango fixes this completely (at least the beta build does). I've had the problem ever since 7004. The screen is really beautifull now!

Gallery not loading higher res pictures?

When I browse my gallery which shows my picasa albums, and select a photo, it will show it fullscreen but then it won't actually load the higher resolution version. This happens for only certain photos.
Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so how did you fix it?
Thanks!
Try 'Multi Touch Gallery' from the Market
Wait for 2.2, known issue that's being worked on.
Android 2.1 introduced the new 3d gallery but at the cost of color depth, they had to decrease the color depth from 24 bit to 16 bit.... the issue is known to google and it will be fixed in the next update...

Is there confirmation on that fix ?

[Q] Wallpaper - ugly banding in gradients

I've been searching, and have seen lots of threads about similar problems with the Evo and it's fairly low-color screen, but I was under the impression that the Droid X has a 24bit color screen so this shouldn't be an issue.
Anyway, I've got some wallpapers (cropped and resized for the Droix X from the originals at Ultralinx)
They look fantastic on the computer. They're the right dimensions. Tried saving as JPG and 24 bit PNG, but the outcome is the same. When I copy them to the phone and set them as wallpaper, the gradients don't look smooth; there is color banding all over the place.
I've got screenshots and originals up on the web, but can't link to them until my account is approved by a mod.
EDIT: Added attachments instead, but the forum super-compressing the images doesn't help their clarity at all.
Hey,
i've got the same problem.
That's not funny at all, I really don't know how to save it, that it looks like on my desktop pc!

Sorry to be off topic but I cant help but stare at your notification bar. What theme is it?
It's my own notificationbar.
Have to search the files first
It doesn't seem to be the screen. I dropped those images into my dropbox, and opened them in whatever viewer dropbox opened by default. The image was smooth as I zoomed in, until I zoomed in far enough to see a moire pattern. I also opened it in Astra's built in viewer; again there was no banding. However, when I set the image to be my wallpaper, I see the same banding you are seeing.
Bad news is, I don't know what the problem is; good news is it doesn't seem to be a screen limitation.
Thanks so far!
But what's the problem than?
I really have no idea :/
Ah ha! Google turned up this app: "Wallpaper Set and Save" (Sorry, can't post a link because I'm new, apparently. I attached an image of the QR code instead.)
It says it hasn't been updated for 2.x, but it worked fine on my droid x (running the stock rom with launcher pro.) Using it to set the exact same wallpaper, I now see no banding (although I did in the preview screen.) It's worth a try, although I'd still like to know what is causing this issue (since it obviously isn't a hardware issue.)
I attached a screen capture so you can see for yourself.
Edit: The forum's image compression adds some artifacts; it looks even smoother on my screen capture. Even here it's a big improvement over the others though!
Its probably the gallery app that is re-compressing the wallpaper and creating the bands

Color banding

Is there any solution to this? I've heard it is a software issue, that they were going to fix in the Mango update...
I've updated my phone to the latest firmware, but I still have those issues..
Same here. The color banding is still present even on Mango.
Colour banding on Mango is only evident for apps, throughout the os we have use of 32-bit colour palette. It's up to the developer to use it. Some do, some don't.
The image quality looks really terrible.
The contacts, gallery, on the Zune, everywhere.
But before NoDo everything was fine.

Video in Second Screen?

I'm wondering if there are any ideas on how to utilize the second screen for video playback in addition to the primary.
In the age of notched displays, the corner camera cutout suddenly seems in vogue. With the second screen taken into account, the V20 ends up with a 1:1.9 display which is pixel perfect for cinema 2K full envelope video (1440x2720).
I recall hearing about bugs in various AOSP implementations on the V20 that resulted in this effect; however, it'd be great to have the option as part of a stock ROM, or at least deliberate and controllable in AOSP.
Any thoughts or takers?

This would be absolutely be sweet if somehow implenmented/done. Even gif usage would be cool like by signature or even all screen scrolls.

Wallpaper Aliasing and Compression. How to stop this?

I've been taking some 3840x2160 screenshots on my PC and transferring them to my phone uncompressed. They look really good when i look at them on screen through the gallery: Nice detail, sharp lines etc.
The images are taken in portrait so that when I download them onto my phone, I can rotate them 90 degrees so they fit the screen properly.
The problem is when I go to set the image as a wallpaper, the image becomes compressed ever so slightly. The once smooth lines are now noticeably jagged, even though there seems to be no stretching or scaling of the image. I am able to zoom in to the image to the exact same scale in the gallery and everything seems fine.
To me, there must some kind of process that is converting the image to a lower resolution or compressing the image in some way. My question is how do I stop it so the wallpaper looks nice and sharp.
Anyone know what is going on here who can tell me how I can prevent this?
+1
You've answered this yourself.
Your image is 2160p
The screen is 1440p
Or 1080p if like me you've realised that's m that it's virtually impossible to tell the difference and it's a negligible visual benefit for a significant battery hit.
So resize the image based on the screen you want to use or the phone will do it for you.
Depending on the launcher you're using you it may actually have a size limit and resolution so there should be they to take into account too.
Start by finding out what resolution you're using then get an image for it off the same resolution

I did some additional research into the issue.
The oneplus 8 pro is 3168x1440. It is perfectly capable of displaying a 3840x2160 image with no significant loss of quality. I was able to zoom the image in the photo gallery to cover the entire display (as a wallpaper would) and found the image still looked crisp as it should, yet setting it as a wallpaper caused quality loss despite scaling the same. Clearly the issue was to do with the wallpaper scaling process in android (what the exact issue is i am not sure).
Nevertheless, i downloaded an app from the playstore that was able to fix the issue. The app is called Image 2 Wallpaper on the playstore.
