I have tried to Google this topic, but I have not found anything. I purchased my tablet to replace my old laptop. That beening said, is there a way to root phones from a tablet? I know that after rooting some phones they have a terminal mode but I was just curious if I could use that to root phone on a tablet ( I guess it would be like using abd commands) Thanks for any help!

AFAIK you have to have the drivers installed on your PC for your specific phone. Again AFAIK I haven't seen those drivers for HC as of yet.
You may very well get another answer, but I haven't seen it as of yet. (not to say there won't be in the future).

I suppose it would depend on the phone...if all you need is, for example, the GingerBreak.apk file to root then sure you can use your tablet, just download it from the web and transfer it to your phone. Of course, that wouldn't make much sense because you could just download the file straight to your phone too
But as KJY2010 mentioned, the drivers to use plug in your phone for anything other than SD card transfer are not programmed to work on a tablet. So no, you could not do a more advanced root from your tablet.
...why do you need a tablet to root a phone? I rooted my LG P500h without anything but that phone itself and the installed microsd.
I have an Evo 3D so I can't just gingerbreak it..... that's why I was asking. Seems like something would work seeing how tablets are growing. Guess I'm just a head of the curve.

Yeah lightyears ahead of the curve
I remember when the shady phone shops had hacked Nokia somethingorothers that they plugged other phones into to unlock them.
If you install a terminal app (connectbot has great local terminal support), connect phone via usb (with debugging turned on), you can use the tablet for adb access. Fastboot is not available AFAIK, but a fully functioning adb shell client is built in, at least it is in Honeyvillain, can't vouch for stock though.

I have a keyboard dock for the TF. I received it yesterday. It is in perfect working order and condition and has the latest update already applied. The price is $140.00 if no one is interested or contacts me by 6/6/11 I will just send it back to Newegg. or sell it on Craigslist. I returned the TF to Target and got a refund. I am sure it has a lot of potential but I could not even get it to sync on PC and after 4 hours of trying to get adb to work I gave up. I have rooted a lot of devices and have never had that much trouble just getting adb to work. I really did not want it if I could not root it. If anyone is interested just pm me.

well, i guess it's too late now, but if you can't get adb to work, it's probably an issue with adb, less so the tf. (do you have the latest adb, and asus sync installed, also usb debugging?) if you can't even sync the tf, i'm gonna hazzard to say you don't have asus sync installed.
but anyway, more pertinent to your post, i don't think you're allowed to sell in these here forums.

I had Asus sync installed right from the get go as well as all of the drivers etc Also USB debugging was enabled.Adb is working and has worked with all of my devices(right now G2x and Vibrant)including Nexus One and yes Usb debugging was enabled.I spent over 7 hours trying every conceivable way and it would not even sync with Asus sync nor would it connect with Adb. I am sure this is a great device or will be with updates but I just lost my fascination for it after being unable to even get adb up and running for it. I researched this forum and even downloaded drivers more than twice and still no go. If my mentioning that I have a keyboard I am sending back which is in perfect working condition upsets you or this forum than i will just send it back and get my refund. Thought I would just offer it since they are so difficult to obtain.

That is why I returned it and am returning the keyboard. I have installed adb and rooted numerous devices(Vibrant- G2X-MT4G-G2-Nexus One) with no difficulties for whatever reason this was just a nightmare.
For your ASUS sync download, I assume you got a copy of the most recent installer from ASUS? They did an update not that long ago....

I have used adb and rooted every other device I have owned. Presently I have a G2x and the samsung Vibrant. They both are setup for adb and are rooted. I have no idea why the unit would not or could not be setup to adb. For what my usage would have been it was not worth the time(over 7 hours continuously just on trying to get adb installed) This is a very nice device . I have tried the Xoom and the Acer Iconia and I truly believe the TF is the best of the lot By the way I have installed adb on the xoom and the Acer Iconia with no problem what so ever. Perhaps sometime in the future I will try an Asus again.I would recommend it to friends. I believe the unit I received was defective and did not want to go the route of shipping and receiving etc.
I connected my Transformer to my macbook and it worked right away. I didn't have to install anything though I did have enable usb debugging.

Had it been that easy for me I would still have the device. I did have USB debugging enabled and tried everything I could think of. At the end whenever I would try to reinstall drivers it would recognize it as a HTC desire(Have never had a Desire). Have no idea whats up with that. OH well maybe further down the line.
Too late?

Troubleshooting:
In the event you complete the steps above but your computer either will not recogonize the Transformer in Windows as a device, or ADB will not see it please try the following to see if this will fix it for you. You only need to try these if the above steps aren't working for you, but most people, they work fine.
Try uninstalling the ASUS Sync software, and reloading it. - with the tablet unplugged.
After reinstalling the ASUS Sync software, restart your PC
Make sure your Transformer tablet is in USB Debugging Mode, and connect the USB Cable
You should see a Win7 prompt that says installing drivers. If you do not, try connecting to a different USB port, I've had to do this once on an older PC of mine.
In ADB be sure to kill server and start server and then see if you can see the device
Now, if you are still not seeing it installing drivers, or its not showing up as a device on My Computer, or ADB is still not seeing it, try download and install these ASUS Windows USB Drivers, these may do the trick : http://hotfile.com/dl/118226479/2f89b99/ASUS_Android_USB_drivers_for_Windows.zip.html
I was having the same issue until i tryed the steps above. I could see the device like a HDD but ASUS sync and adb would not work. I reinstalled the software, drivers, plugged / unplugged, debugging on/off, rebooted and nothing worked until I did the exact steps above. Now Asus sync and adb work. Root time. Too bad you took yours back already...
I had hte toughest time getting the adb driver installed for the TF on my computer, where my EVO took mere minutes. I had to try multiple ports and completely remove and reinstall HTC sync to get the adb driver to finally show up and install. I'm on Windows 7 x64.
could be something simple that you overlooked. a lot of times i could have save myself some trouble and frustration if i just look over my basics first.

I want to be able to plug a standard usb webcam "type" device into my A500.
I bought off a usb microscope off Ebay. It is recognized under windows xp - 7 as a usb hid device. It did not even come with a driver disk, since everything recognized it automagically. I tried it last night under 3 different linux distro's and they detected it with no issue.
Does anyone know of a way? It would be so much easier to carry the tablet with me, vs a laptop, not to mention much better battery life so I can be in the field longer without a recharge.
I think the A500 needs root for it to go into host mode. Do you have it rooted? I don't think I have heard of any webcam device working on Android with a simple plug and play, but who knows.

Oh yeah I'm rooted, running a custom rom. I'm not scared to get my hands dirty either if someone knows of a solution
Hello, I'm looking also to find a solution for a webcam. But no lock so far.
Once I tried one on a older tablet running 1.6 and it worked but as it had the drivers build in loaded but I had to use a special camera apk.
So I think we need to have two things (maybe this is obvious for you)
1) the correct drivers loaded (we need to find them)
2) The correct app that let us choose the usb camera as I think they enumerate starting as 0... Or can create one
But to me the hardest part is finding the correct drivers.
Could you share the a link to that ebay microscope ? I might get one of the same so we can play with the same thing.
Thx
I'va had my KF since Jan of this year. I love it, I have it rooted, I used burrito root and I have the market installed. Never had a problem. Today I tried to transfer a file (ebook) from PC to KF. I plugged it into the computer and it made that sound like its supposed to when you plug anything external into a pc. However, the box never popped up with the options to transfer/delete, etc... I have never tried this before, I'm wondering if that part broke during the rooting process?
Any advice would be great!
you need to configure the windows driver to recognize your KF.

So my old Nexus 7's screen was shattered, it still turns on, I know bec the music was still playing.
Any way to transfer the files from a shattered-screen N7 to the new N7?
Got some recent image files I hadn't backed up, which will take a while to reproduce. I use ES file explorer.

If the screen is still mostly readable - but the digitizer doesn't work - use a OTG cable and a USB mouse.
adb pull /sdcard/ will copy everything from the SD card to your PC if you want to go that route.
You should be able to install apps to the cracked-up tablet by using the web interface of the Google Play market.
good luck

Nope it's shattered, flickers and lights up but completely illegible.
I'll try connecting it to a PC, my apps and settings are mostly synced to the replacement already, but it would be great to be able to transfer files.
Google/Asus/Android should really allow direct file transfer access via USB, WiFi, NFC, etc for upgrading/replacing devices which are both registered to the same Google account.
I understand this could pose security risks but so could everything else.
If I can transfer files direct from my WiFi camera to my N7, shouldn't I be able to transfer files from one N7 to the other? I guess I could prob set this up via ftp if the screen was working....

Is the tablet rooted? Is adb enabled?
If you can get an adb shell running (from a PC) you could manually pack things up using archiving tools (zip, tar, whatever) and transfer the archives using either "adb pull" or via command-line ftp. Sort of depends on what tools the ROM busybox/toolbox supports.
If it isn't rooted you are probably limited to copying the /sdcard, although there are obscure things that could be tried (e.g. see if you can get a mouse, keyboard, and PC connected via adb simultaneously by hooking the N7 to a USB hub with an OTG cable) - you can pull "screen shots" from the device using the SDK "ddms" tool. Pain in the rear, but you could ?? maybe "see" what was on the screen that way.
good luck

It's not rooted, but USB debugging is enabled.
If I could input my pattern to get past the unlock screen, I could pull the files via USB from a PC, but apparently that won't work when the screen is locked.
I tried that adb SD card pull but I get no adb devices recognized, again I think bec the screen is locked out.
Any other ideas?
I'm beginning to think it's not worth it, but I still would like to wipe the device.
I think I can wipe it using the avg antivirus theft protection remotely, at least I have that setup. Still not sure if this will work if screen is locked. I'd think it would, else what's the point?

Ahh crap - adb security on 4.2.2 and a pattern lock on a broken screen.
You are right - that leaves almost nothing left to try.
Seems like what is needed is some kind of ssh server app that doesn't need any GUI configuration - that would at least allow an unprivileged shell from a different computer on your LAN. (But unfortunately it seems like most ssh server apps require some fooling around in the GUI to set them up after installation). Those lost tablet/phone apps can be pushed from the Google Play market using a web browser and will run on install - you need something like that.
Not sure it such a thing exists, though. Sorry.

Do you have an otg cable? You could try using a mouse to unlock the screen blindly.... remembering that when you plug in the mouse it is centered on the screen. Or use a keyboard if you have a pin lock code. You should check and see if avg can remotely change the password. If so with an otg cable and some luck you just might crack it

Thanks for the responses guys. The files I was mourning the most were abt 40 photo's I'd spent time tweaking and editing, I found most of the raw originals on my camera (after going thru 400 or so) and will just try to redo the edits..
Some stuff will be lost, now I know to upload everything important to drive, photo bucket, PC, etc.
I'll do the avg wipe and post how it works out, being careful not to wipe my current nexus which I should have waited before installing avg on.

Wow, using the mouse to unlock is a great idea. Thanks for that.
The tablet was rooted and put into debug mode initially, but there have been OS updates since then so maybe it isn't going to work.
Having never used adb, I connected the Nexus 7 via USB. It showed up on the PC as Nexus 7, but there are no files. I ran "adb.exe devices" and it said there were no devices. Does that mean its not in debug mode, or might I be doing something else wrong. (should it have seen other USB devices, like mouse and keyboard?)
I haven't tried the mouse to unlock yet. I need to practice the pattern with my new Nexus.
E_C
You need to install pdanet drivers from sdk platform tools or one of the many toolkits for nexus 7.
If you have the auto detect drivers its being detected as a media device and adb wont detect.
Hope that helps,as well I think if you connect in fastboot you wouldnt have to worry about the screen lock.
I just purchased a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado and it has the refresh interior. This includes a 14.1" android tablet as the radio.
This device is running Android 10. I have enabled developer settings, but can't seem to get any devices to pick it up in adb mode.
I've tried with my phone (wireless) and with my computer (wired).
I'm trying to side load some applications to it.
Can some one help me in this forum?
Thanks in advance

Hey, this is kind of a stupid question but.....along similar kinda thought, when I connect my phone via USB to my car, is there a way I could see and change the stock parameters in the sound system to something more like my liking. I use wavelet with my phone and when I plug in with USB in the car to drive even the car is effected. Without the wavelet it doesn't sound the same. I'm wanting to see if I can somehow do that so I don't gotta plug my phone in with wavelet. Cause sometimes wavelet acts funny.

Also note I have firefox and airscreen(airplay mirroring) working in the GM emulator so if only ADB worked we could be having so much fun.
