[Q] Basic Questions - rooting, sbf, custom roms, etc - Droid X General

Recently purchased a used Droid X - previously using an HTC incredible, both on Verizon. So, I have experience with rooting, custom ROMs, etc.
I have minimal experience with Motorola phones, however have been reading a lot and educationg myself, including stickies in this forum and elsewhere. I have been trying to answer my own questions by reading and not getting where I want so I decided to ask some direct questions.
According to the phone
System Version: 4.5.605.MB810.Verizon.en.US
Baseband version: BP_C_01.09.13P
There's also Kernel and Bulid information, not sure if it's relevant
Android 2.3.3
So, my end goal is to be running MIUI Rom on this phone - I have used it on my incredible for a while.
According to forum post on MIUI.US - forums.miui.us/showthread.php?8863-ROM-MIUI.us-DefX-1.10.21, I'm supposed to:
Installation Instructions:
1) SBF to .602 unless you're already on MIUI 1.10.7
2) Flash Rom
3) Wipe Cache
4) Re-enable root permissions in the superuser app.
5) Do not restore backups made before version 1.10.7.
So, I understand what SBF is - from what I'm understanding, I have 605 (a gingerbread ROM) - presumably a verizon stock ROM. So, in multiple places I read I have to SBF down to froyo to root the phone, then I can get to where I can flash a ROM. So, first question:
A. Is this true based on the ROM I have now? If so, which ROM? - is 602 the one referred to in a sticky where I can flash a ROM that is already gingerbread and rooted? Knowing which ROM if any to SBF to is probably the most confusing part from everything I've read.
I think once I understand that, I would know which sticky's instructions to follow and get on my way.
I think that covers it.

You can stay on .605.
There is a thread on rooting in the Droid X General forum, there is no need to downgrade.
Then install Droid 2 Bootstrapper and install MIUI.

EDIT: Looked up MIUI for you.
Per the http://rootzwiki.com/topic/1613-rom81911miuius-official-miui4dx-1819/

NOTES:
You MUST be on CyanogenMod 7 or .340 Froyo to flash this rom!
Remember to wipe before flash!
Make sure to take your camera settings off of widescreen. If you want the MIUI Web Browser from .29, Its in the market, "Miren Browser".
I am aware that there are some bugs, if Airplane bugs resumes in 1.8.19 I will make sure to look into it more this week. MUST still use froyo kernel, GB is not ready yet.

So you have to SBF back to .340
I found this guide to be extremely easy to follow http://androidforums.com/droid-x-al...ad-602-sbf-root-process-updated-9-9-11-a.html
Simply use the .340 file from http://sites.google.com/site/1kdsdroidx/home
Once you have completed this root your device, Petes Root Tools or Z4root.
Install the bootstrap, would suggest using the Droid X2 Strap
Follow the MIUI instructions.
---Ignore the previous post here----
To root on a GingerRom use Petes Root Tool. Its REALLLLLY easy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258599
Then from there you need the Clockworks Recovery Mod for a Droid X2 (not the Droid X).
You can either get the bootstrap from market or free online. The market is just donating to the cause.
From there use the recovery to load your choice in roms according to the instructions. This is usually a Wipe/Reset, Install from Zip and Reboot.
If you wanted to SBF or need to from a failed install, bootloop, etc then there are several guides to get you fixed up. Such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020203

Just fyi, the old miui is 340 the new releases are on the gingerbread kernel. I didn't read the whole post but you can run miui from 605 as I am, as I write this post.

Question about updating to 2.3.340

I've read some Android Forums but I can't seem to get my answers...
I need help updating to 2.3.340
I'm new to rooting and deoxeding my phone so I apologize If I have alot of questions....
I am currently on 2.3.15 , rooted and deoxed. My phone keeps prompting me to updating to 2.3.340.
Questions:
1. Should/Can I allow the update to take place automatically?
2. Will I lose my root access and will my phone not be deoxed?
3. Do I need to revert my phone back to stock then update automatically?
4. Is there a link on how to update to 2.3.340 when you have a rooted phone?
Any help is appreciated, thanks!
I'm also curious. I'm on the 2.2OTA-Rooted and my phone wants me to update.
1. Should/Can I allow the update to take place automatically? NO!!! not while it is as you have it now.
3. Do I need to revert my phone back to stock then update automatically? YES and be sure to uninstall any program related to rooting your phone before reverting to stock.
Kapi187.. Hope you don't mind if I add some questions to your thread... It seems our questions are running along the same lines.
I too have been reading quite a bit about the upgrading process and am trying to figure out a few things.. Likewise, some of them may sound "noobish" but please bare with me...
My understanding is that the 2.3.34 update is available OTA (I am currently running 2.3.15 as well).. Is it necessary to revert to a stock sbf (what does sbf stand for?)?
A breakdown of my current setup:
system version 2.3.15
Android version 2.2
Running JRummy V1.0 Rom
Odexed
rooted (obviously)
clockwork recovery installed (also obvious)
image available from pre-rom condition
How should I go about updating to 2.3.34? Is it necessary/ is there a purpose? What are the advantages to doing so?
I have a friend with a Nexus One and he doesn't need to update any system version so we have been discussing back and forth trying to understand the droid x/verizon system.
All help is greatly appreciated... And hopefully this will help others.
Not at all p3p... ask as many questions as you can... helps me out too..
I too would like to know what .Sbf and the other one stand for... lol I can't remember what it was...
So after we revert back to Stock.. (any link as to where to find the stock file?) Update automatically... then we follow the same procedures to re-root the phone?

What I would do is SBF using the full .320 file and then do the .340 system only SBF and you will be on the most current version. Then download z4root its a one click root app which will give you root obviously. Then customize your phone to your liking.

Um - if you are running 2.3.15 I would not recommend doing the sbf with the .320 file. I am just trying to be helpful -not a butt.
I would use the full sbf released for 2.3.15 which can be found at...
http://rootzwiki.com/index.php/Main-Page/Droid-X-Full-2.2-SBF.html
I just posted the guide I used to sbf here for another member...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901934
Here is my understanding of your situation. You are getting prompted for the update. I THINK that even if you said yes and tried to run it - that you would just end up with an error - because the update checks your system to see if all the proper files are there and if they are not it will not run. I think.
So I think the best thing to do is sbf then take the update. You will loose root. and you will not be de-odexed. You will have to reroot. But like the other member said - get z4root (link in the other thread with the sbf instructions) and run it after you do the over the air.
I make no guarantees. Just sharing to the best of my knowledge.

Flashing the .320 full SBF then the sys only .340 SBF would be the same as the .15 SBF to OTA. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

SBF stands for SmartBroker Data File, but that doesn't matter, it's simply a backup file. It's not necessary to upgrade to .340 unless you use custom ROMs, because anything made for .320/.340 isn't compatible with .15. The Nexus One doesn't have a system version because it's pure android; the android version is the system version. Other phones have a separate system version because the carriers feel the need to bog the phone down with bloatware and their custom launchers.
SBF files can be found here, and make sure you make a backup immediately after you're re-rooted, so you can just restore it to accept the next OTA.

Excellent information! So when utilizing my own backup (or the SBFs presented above), do I need to uninstall clockwork or root before going after the OTA? I am figuring the OTA isn't looking for that information but want to avoid the infamous brick situation at all costs.
No, you can leave everything installed. An SBF is similar to the factory reset disc that comes with computers; it formats everything and then installs the OS on a clean slate. An OTA won't check for root, but it does check for the bloatware. If any of it is missing/renamed, it won't install the update.

TOTAL N00B: Where do I start?

I have the SCH-I400 (hardware version i400.0.6) , still with stock software:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: S:i400.0.6V.DL17
Kernel version: 2.6.29
Build number: SCH-I400.DL17
I would like to upgrade it to Android 2.2 (or higher) with minimal risk of bricking it.
Where do I start?
Are there special tools that I need?
Is there a difference between "firmware" and "ROM"?
Which is the latest stable firmware/ROM that you can recommend?
Is it possible to try a particular firmware/ROM without replacing the current firmware/ROM?
What do I need to do to save the current stock firmware/ROM so that I can restore it later (if I ever want to).
I am basically clueless at this point, so any tip or link would be very much appreciated.
Thank You!

That's what I did before posting my question but the best I could find was this HOWTO for Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10.
My understanding is that instructions that are good for one brand/model are not necessarily good for another. I couldn't find such a HOWTO for the Samsung Continuum SCH-I400 and I really don't want to brick my phone just to find out that I missed or misunderstood a step. Can you help?
For example, I found in this thread a reference to something called odin:
Is this the recommended way to flash the Samsung Continuum SCH-I400?
Is v1.85 the latest & greatest?
Is it possible to try a particular version without flashing it? (I have almost 8GB of free SD space)
Do I have to root the device before attempting any firmware trial or flash?
Just look in the development section
Literally all of your questions have been answered throughout the forum..
1. you'll want to download odin (or heimdall if you're on mac/linux)
2. firmware is the version your phone is running, and a ROM is a custom OS. for example, you're firmware is 2.1-update1. however, you are using the stock ROM. for the samsung continuum, as far as i know there is only one other ROM on 2.1-update1 (which is the firmware) and that's the debinged/debloated DL17 ROM (which is the custom OS).
3. just go through the development system and look through the ROM's and look at the comments to see if there are any bugs. currently the latest firmware is 2.2 but i don't know if there are any bugs.
4. not quite sure what you mean by that
5. what you're talking about is a nandroid backup. to do a nandroid backup you have to get clockwork recovery. just check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057072

He is talking about running a ROM off his SD card. That's probably the one unanswered question. From what I know, not you can't.
You have a LOT of reading and research to do before you're ready to do any of this stuff. Read through the Android Development sub-forum.... Then read it again... if anything is confusing, read it again. You can SERIOUSLY mess up your phone if you don't know what you're doing... Once you understand it all, then try it out.
My advice would be to first do research on the terminology. Once you know what words like flash, rom, odin, cwm, cwm cyan vs. yellow, recovery, and what things like a tar.md5, and update.zip, mean and do, it will be a lot easier to understand what you are reading. Google is your friend. Most of what I've learned has come from there. Also, peruse different forums. I understand that this one can get a little techincal for a noob. I still have to scratch my head about half of the time and think about what I'm reading before it makes sense. It will come, slowly. Just save yourself a lot of headache, and read read read, and if you have ANY doubts, find the answer BEFORE you start the process.
This video helps a lot with cwm, and flashing via odin

Start by googling root and cintinuum and look for addictivetips tutorial and then look for how to install clockwork mod recovery (this was the difficult part imo) should also be at addictivetips. By time your done you should at least be familliar with programs involved and asking troublshoot Q's instead of general "how do I" Q's......

TUT
There is a great tutorial on getting to 2.2.2 in the EC07 clean thread in development.
The quickest method ive use so far (i am newbie 2 rootin etc) is download the tool to root 'superoneclick' then youl have to search for the correct flash tool for your device, then download cwm recovery to backup/restore and install your 'mod rom'. Theres some very good roms about on this site,im only on a x1o mini pro came with 2.1 and s.e refused to release any futher updates 4 this model!but its now running either 2.3.9 or 2.3.5 quite smoothly ..made up ,so u should be able to find and try later than 2.3 and choose which rom you prefer.

well you dont have to start by rooting your phone... rooted roms flashed by odin work on stock 2.1 thats how i did it... i used superoneclick only once, on ec07 stock. havent had to since, cause i flashed roms with odin/cwm that are rooted and deodexed.

[Q] Noob trying to root. I need help!!

I'm currently running the System Version 4.5.602 on my DX. Never rooted before!!
My question is, where can I go to find out how to root my phone? Any links for the version I'm running? Or will I have to downgrade my version first? If so, where can I find out how to do that.
Much Thanks!!
a little help.
Look under pete's motorola root tools thread on this forum. everything u need is in there.....hope it helps.
Droidmodderx is a good one too
TappaTappaTappa
Google searching does wonders. Unless its something specific to this forum that I'm looking for, I usually google all my problems. Just add "droid x" to the end of your search so you know its for your phone.
As said before, Pete's Motorola tools is a good one.
On a side note...if you ever mess something up on your phone and need to SBF, MAKE SURE you have the .602 sbf file. I used to have 602 on my droidX and i ran an SBF for another version and none of my backup/restores prior to the SBF would work.
z4root also works.
You can also download it from the market (or from a google search)
edit... z4root may not work with a fresh .602 sbf (previously I sbf'ed to the previous release.. rooted then updated and that kept root)
Looks like pete's motorolla root tools is the best option right now

quick question, help needed...

I was just given a rooted Droid X.
currently it is running MIUI 1.9.9, it is running BP_C_01.09.13P baseband and 2.6.32.9-g55626e1w30471 as the kernel.
I'm brand spanking new to this device, and there is a ton of information regarding different updates issued for it. I've searched but I cant seem to find a clear answer...
can I flash any Droid x rom on this device as it is right now?
is there any need to .sbf to something first?
I've read some contradicting information and would rather as than soft brick it.
thanks in advance.
It appears you are on 340 which is the froyo kernel. Most roms have moved to the gingerbread kernel (602 or higher)
Depending on what rom you want to flash you will need to sbf to 602 and optionally take the ota to 605 and then reroot. Use the d2 bootstrapper to get into cwm and then flashed away.
There are plenty of guides with more details about this.

[Q] Flashing steps question.

I have rooted the Droid X, got bootstrapper running and can get to CWM. I want to flash [ROM] Steel Droid X: 3.0 : Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread, but that OP mentions
"I used the following SBF before flashing my ROM. This is the same SBF I have been using for the longest time. Actual link to the SBF will NOT be posted, per forum rules. VRZ_MB810_2.3.34_1FF_01.zip - 255.7 MB"
What I want to know is if this step is required? From my research the SBF file is used to return the phone to stock state. Is that really a required step before flashing a custom rom?
Thanks for all the help, I'm a Galaxy S 4G guy trying to pimp my girlfriends phone out. So my apologies if this is a super simple question but all the reading I have done hasn't confirmed whether this is a required step in the process.
Since this rom uses the Froyo kernel, you do have to follow the step and SBF.
Due to our locked bootloader we can't flash from kernel to kernel via ClockworkMod Recovery, so we use the SBF files.
