thanks,i think the phone is on 02 & im vodafone & i dont fancy going down the road of rooting just yet,so u think the unlock app on android market should help me out without rooting ?

Rooting is so easy on this phone. Looks like a great price as well

hi,ive been an apple fan for years ive had all the iphones, but ive got a experia play at the moment & fancy a change, always done jailbreak on my iphones & i take it rooting is similar method on android phones,is it worth rooting & what exactly will i benefit from doing it ?still looking for a positive answer for the unlock cause i need my voda sim to work in this phone ?

It's definitely worth it, because:
- You're be able to use more great apps like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer or Droidwall, AdFree etc.
- More customization abilities in themes and menues
- Many developers did a great job on fixing some issues like gtalk, battery life improvement, added call record features, no ascending ringtone, speed improvements etc.
It takes some time to get used to it, but it is definitely a great experience for sure. Take a look at the custom roms topics in the original android development or android development sections.

Is rooting for me??

Hi
I do not know much about the complex world of Android. By not knowing much about it, I cannot even say much about things I want to have because I do not even know what is possible to have with these ROM's...
So maybe I should do the opposite- Explain what I want to do with my phone and maybe you nice people can recommend me of a course of action.
So....
I would like to try that whole under/over clocking thing- I understand that it is the best thing to do in terms of improving battery life. It won't kill my cam right?
I'd like to have Hebrew fonts.
I'm an ex-iphone user so is there a parallel cydia for android? a place you can get all the apps for free?
That is about it...
Thanks
No apps for free here! We support our development community!
I'd recommend stock!

Well yes, some have experienced a better battery life by rooting and installing a custom kernel (as well as a kernel manager like setCPU or JuiceDefender). Note that rooting means voiding your warranty (it is not really that bad )
Apps... well there is no such place to get free apps, by default most android apps are less than 5 bucks (with the exception of a few specialty apps) so it is better to pay for them and encourage devs to produce more (or better versions).

I found this searching around. Not sure if it still works, but see post # 12 on this thread!
Hebrew Fonts For EVO
You do need to be the root user of your device before you can apply.
Hope all goes well!
List of things only possible on root:
Wifi tether for free
Themes
With certain custom roms or kernals you get better battery life
Improved performance
Full backup of settings and apps with titanium backup.
Or complete backup of your whole rom and data (nandroid backup)
I would say go for it especially since your already familiar with cydia. A marketplace such as cydia is not needed on android because google will allow root only apps in the their own market place.

EDIT: o ya, you can always unroot if you have any problems too, just do it right.

I switched in June from the iPhone to the EVO. I recommend rooting to everyone, just about. It's easy to reverse and almost impossible to brick your phone. Not to mention, xda offers a lot of support.
Not sure about the Hebrew fonts. Search around some more.
As for pirating apps, it's easy enough. I don't think anyone around here will tell you how. That's not because we hate piracy, but because we want to support the developers.
The Marketplace has a good thing going and doesn't share the faults of the App Store. The price of apps (which are in large part free) in the Marketplace is much more competitive than that of the App Store, and the sales/give aways are much more frequent, too.
Not to mention, unlike the App Store, each app in the Marketplace allows you to return apps within 24 hours if you don't like it.

what Pushed you to Root your SII ?

for me coming from an iphone and an ipad , i couldnt care less about rooting as i had alot more freedom than what i was used to even after jailbreak
But after a couple of weeks decided to root my device for 2 reasons , 1st was Samsung Kies cant imagine my self ever having to use it again what an awfull software , the second was Chain3d and the ability to play tegra games
I'd like to hear what the other users have to say , may be even help me explore more into the world of rooting
Chain fire , CWM , Ad Blocker , Root access and also that i can flash CM9 (ICS) as soon as it is available
I haven't rooted it yet. Waiting for ICS. Chainfire 3D sounds tempting, but I already have PS2, PS3 and PSP, so not much time for mobile gaming.
SetCPU and App Quarantine
My rebel spirit.
Titanium Backup and need for IPsec VPN.
roms and the fun of it
ICS when it comes too....the port is looking really good once they get over that speed bump with audio
ROM Flashing Disorder . there i said it

I held off for a good few months... but then I fancied playing with a vanilla AOSP ROM. Now I've flashed about 12 kernels and countless ROMs.. Always come back to stock though, keep root for titanium.
mainly because it was so easy to do but the ability to use set cpu and custom roms makes it more fun too.
Still not got round to rooting my desire hd as it seems a lot of messing about
Tweaked kernels and rom customization, like removing unneeded system apps.
The fact that i bought it.
I rooted mainly to do the following:
Remove bloatware plus apps I don't use with TBackup
Customise the interface plus tweak CPU And services for extra battery.
A few decent apps require root access to function and because I like playing with the latest roms, titanium backup is something I just couldn't do without

I'm some one who always want's to dig deep, dive into the system, bring it completely under my control and then do things the maker of the device didn't intend me be doing
Long story short, like do all that's possible and a bit more, tinker with the system.
To delete the damn Samsung bloatware!
A whole new world of possibilities are exposed when you root your SGSII, i rooted mine within hours of getting it and then flashed a custom ROM.
People who don't root their phone are basically missing out.
Errrrr why wouldn't you root the sgs 2. For starters I changed the dpi as 240 is childlike imho. And yes, I can't help but flash
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Well I rooted it and the first thing I did was unlock it. But, as with any Android device, you have to root (I feel). I'm on a miui build atm and just love how customizable the 'themes' are on it. I don't even use many root programs, just Twitter Facebook and a browser mainly, but its nice knowing I have root if I ever need it. An of course when a stable build of ICS comes out I'm going to try that.

New To Android (Galaxy S3)

Well, I have been an iphone user for the last few years and finally made the switch. I customize everything, so I'm use to using Cydia and Winterboard. I have no idea if there is anything comparable.
So, my question is... As a beginner on this platform, where do I even start looking besides here to find out what I can do with rooting my phone, creating themes, or custom apps and tweaks.
Like I said, I'm very new too this, and have no idea where to look. I've tried searching, but some of the terms i'm not familiar with yet. The nice thing that I can see right now, is the reason's I jailbroke my iphone, the S3 does already, or I have figured out an easy alternative.
Any help in the right direction would be great! So far, I'm really glad I got rid of the iphone

XDA is probably the best source, but there are certainly plenty of other xda-like sites out there. RootzWiki is probably the biggest, but it seems like a handful of new ones pop up every day.
On top of that, I'd say try the obvious... google it! If you google something like "what can i do with my rooted android phone" you'll find a lot of good suggestions (articles by tech sites, as well as forum threads from people who have asked the same questions as you). Keep in mind though, Android advances pretty fast, and all phones are a little different so not everything you find may be relevant anymore. Example: You may find something that says screenshots are a good reason to root... but that's a standard feature now in ICS, and Samsung phones could do it all along. So just keep that in mind... some things you may find may be out of date.
Hey welcome to android. I too made the switch over a year ago and that's when I became a member here. I spent the better part of that sifting through all this site has to offer. I started with the captivate when the rooms for it were at their prime and I have upgraded to the s3. I don't know all there is to know about this stuff but I have not wrecked my phones yet. So with all that said I would recommend getting yourself familiar by reading the stickies. They some very nice tutorials. Also if your not sure about something qna section is good. Once you get the hang of all this you will see exactly why android is true open source. Jailbreaking for me got boring but rooting and flashing roms is always interesting. This site also has very friendly developers that love doing this stuff so that's also a huge help. Last but not least don't be afraid to ask. It may mean the difference between an awesome phone and nice looking paper weight from Korea

The great thing about Android is because you can do anything on it right out of the box compared to you having to jailbreak an iphone. Id suggest just going through different apps and what not in the app store and see what catches your eye
Honestly, I would recommend that you spend some serious time getting to know android and understanding all of the capabilities of your phone before you even consider rooting it (not to mention flashing a new ROM.
I am a long time Android user that has rooted and flashed many ROM's over the years, but the S3 is so good out of the box (imho) that I personally have no need or desire to even root it at this point. That may change in the future, but that's where I stand right now.
I guess my advice would be ... don't be in a huge hurry to start making massive changes to the device until you understand what you have. No need to risk killing that shiny new toy (yet).

Welcome,
Another source to check out is YouTube.
You can finds videos on
How to Root, How to use Odin, How to Flash, How to use apps like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, etc..
Also I made a reference guide in the S2 forum when I had it that explain some of the lingo around here.
Study it

Welcome. I think maybe figure out what you'd like to do that you haven't figured out yet and search on xda or even Google. Its possible you may not need to root to achieve it. I root only to restore app plus its data from one android phone to the next. Without root it only restores app so for example with games it won't restore where I left of in the other device.

What do i need to do?

Hello guys !
I will receive my new tablet Nexus 7 in the following days. I don't have any knowledge on Android (I've an iPhone 4 jailbreaked + many tweaks etc ...) so that's totally new for me, and i need some help.
I'll use that tablet for studing, gaming , surfing etc ...
The fact is that i want to have totally access to my tablet (like iFile on iPhone) , the SSH, install tweaks , some cracked apps , install themes and have a really fast tablet (where i can oc if in need).
I probably think that i'll root it , but i don't know the differences and the benefits between the root, unlock , ,and all these ROMs/kernels etc... (i'm french so i don't understand all on these operation, and i don't want to brick my tablet =/ )
So i'd like to know what do you recommend to me ? Do i just need to root the tablet and that's all ? To unlock ? Or try to install another rom to respond better to my demand ?
Also , do any update will erase my "root" as the same as the iPhone jailbreak ?
Thank you very much
Don't do anything for the first week or so except read XDA.
This is not Apple, you can already install an SSH client (e.g. ConnectBot) many useful apps, even apps that are not from the Google Play store (if you allow "Unknown Sources") and the N7 is fast enough that you don't need to overclock it.
So just enjoy and learn.

I recommend you pay for your apps and support the developers. And unlike iOS devices, you don't need to root to do any of that. (Freedom!)
like what the others said, take your time, get used to Android. once you do, and feel that it lacks in some areas that root can solve easily (e.g. plugging in a USB thumb drive to expand the tiny 8 GB storage), then go ahead and root it!
Get used to android first. Get could comfortable with it. Then do lots of reading. And after you learn how to root and unlock the bootloader then watch some videos on YouTube. DroidModderX is a good source I think. After that you should root and unlock it

Thank's all for your reply !!
The fact is that i don't want to waste my time on installing, formating , reinstalling lots of things. I've take the time to read, and seen many tweaks and good applications that i'll can't use if my tablet is not rooted, so i wondered what was the best option for me. I like to change the OS and find usefuls things that the stock OS can't do. Ex: There's no Micro/SD port card ,so i will probably need to root the tablet and buy a cable!
So i think that i'll just root my tablet with the nexus root toolkit just to see if it works good and if i don't need anything else.
And maybe later i'll try to install another rom. I don't know what kind of benefits i could draw from it , but i'll try

[Q] Pros & Cons of Rooting

Can somebody tell me about the pros & cons of rooting?
I am gonna root my Nexus 4.
Pros :
Full control over device
Opens a door into a huuuuuuuge library of mods.
Cons :
If you don't know what you're doing you **** up your device.
Read read read if you are unsure, ask questions, that's the only con. The perks to rooting and unlocking the bootloader are too numerous not to. I know its not much of an answer, and I mean absolutely no disrespect, but why get a phone designed by Google to basically allow complete control to the user if you weren't going to utilize that?
Tinkering at first is intimidating out of fear of damaging something, but with a lot of direction following and a little faith in yourself, trust me you won't regret it.:good:
Pros: Here are some of the pros that i personally have: More control and customization, adblockers, audio mods that give you beats or Sony audio, ROMs are updated everyday by patches or commits, root apps like TI backup for backing apps, some awesome mod features that aren't found else where, you can change boot animations, there are a handful of ROMs to try, and these are what I can think of right now. Oh and you get the newest android version first than others. If you're on stock on a nexus, you'll get the newest android version first than nexus users on other ROMs because the source code is usually released a month later, but even then when the code is opened (released) we will still get the newest android version since all of our sources are open sourced. Make sense?
Cons: None really. Only things that I can think of are flashing the wrong thing or doing something that you weren't supposed to. In that case your phone becomes paper weight. But if you know how to read and follow instructions, you're set to go.

Hi All!!
First of all, thank you for your valuable suggestions.
I would like to ask two more things:-
1. Best ROM for nexus 4 (in terms of performance, battery life, visual effects etc.)
2. Is it possible to reverse the rooting means to unroot the phone??

1. You have to decide which is the best in your own by trying them out. Everyone has a different opinion. Kernels is what you need for performance, battery life and such. Roms offer customizations and might contribute to some power saving.
